warm on a cold night | kim mingyu
Tumblr media
pairing: non-idol!mingyu (svt) x female!reader
notes: college au! fluff, pet names, the great wall of mingyu, fake dating for convenience? maybe questionable relationships (aka mingyu what are we), a bit of angst— nothing too serious, alcohol consumption, a clingy and touchy mingyu. loosely based on the song warm on a cold night by HONNE
word count: 3.6k (a bit of a long one, sorry!)
summary: there was no denying that mingyu looked like he was carved out from the gods, that's why he keeps getting asked out.
yet every poor person's attempt of asking him out is often met with rejection. the reason? you two are *supposedly* dating (on the dl), he would say. the truth? you two aren’t.

"kim mingyu, can you please enlighten me why the girls that i just passed by from the engineering department literally gave me the nastiest side eye?" you raised a brow at mingyu who was crouched over at the student lounges by the engineering department. you set the coffee and cake at the nearby empty table.
upon hearing your voice, mingyu looked like a child on christmas morning as soon as he saw you.
“baby!” mingyu came running, tackling you with a huge hug, abandoning the plates he had been working on. “i missed you!” he said, almost excruciatingly loud, turning a few heads over your way.
“yah,” you smacked the back of his head, causing him to groan and let go of the hug almost immediately. “i told you to quit calling me that!”
“you don’t like being called honey nor sweetheart either,” mingyu mumbled, rubbing the back of his head.
“it’s because my parents call me that,” you replied, getting sidetracked. “but that’s not the point—“
“would you rather i call you kitten, instead?” he asked in a suggestive tone, wriggling his eyebrows.
“why you—“ you were ready to let out a string of curses, a hand also ready to smack the living daylights out of him, before mingyu grabbed you from behind and wrapped both his arms around you— one to press over your mouth and one to stop your hand from hitting him.
“kitten, let’s not get violent.” mingyu said, trying to calm you down.
“yn, are you being held hostage by your own boyfriend?” jihoon asked in amusement as he passed by you two.
you pulled away mingyu’s hand that was pressed against your lips, “yes, but he’s not my boyfriend.”
mingyu, who still stood there behind you, rested his chin on top of your head and continued to wrap his arms around you.
“not according to the people from the music department,” jihoon replied with a smirk. “and this,” he gestured to the position that you two are in “is not helping.”
“uji, what are you doing in the engineering department anyway?” mingyu asked, “are you here to see me because you miss me?” he teased.
“no, because why would i even do that," jihoon looked disgusted upon hearing mingyu's comment, making mingyu pout. "besides, unlike some people, i don’t have to run from one end of the campus to the other just to see someone,” jihoon replied, the comment more so directed at you.
“i did not run on my way here,” you rolled your eyes, feeling defensive all of a sudden. “and i’m here because this 6 ft tall baby won’t stop blowing upmy phone, saying he wanted coffee.”
“and yet you’re here,” jihoon said in a teasing tone, enough to make you charge at him— you could’ve though, if wasn’t for mingyu who’s still latched to you.
“and my baby’s here with iced americano,” he said, letting go of you and grabbing the coffee instead. “and cake?” his eyes almost sparkled upon seeing the familiar takeout box from his favourite dessert place aka cheollie and jeonghan’s cafe. “oh, you truly love me.” mingyu chuckled softly.
you snorted. “yeah, right.” it’s always complicated with you two. you never knew where things crossed and you assumed neither did mingyu.
“okay, it seems like i’m intruding,” jihoon mumbled “i need to go, i have to meet vernon by the library soon— have fun you two.” jihoon said with a smile. “oh, and do not forget, we’re all meeting at seungcheol’s café on saturday. the man gets sulky whenever we don’t go all out on his birthday,” he added before he left you two alone.
“wait, i’ll come with you, uji!” you said to jihoon before turning to mingyu who was already pouting. “i need to go, gyu. good luck on your plates!” you smiled at him and gently tapped his cheek.
“you’re not staying with me?” mingyu was getting sulky “but you just got here.” he whined.
“i only came here because you kept calling my phone, you’re lucky i didn’t block your number.” you said, half-joking— on the latter part, of course!
“you’d never do it anyway.” mingyu said with a smug smile.
“only because you’ll tell my mom and i will never hear the end of it.” you sighed. “i swear she loves you more than me.”
"it's because she has taste," mingyu stuck his tongue out at you, making you roll your eyes "unlike her daughter who will purposely leave me alone to fend for myself."
"you are so dramatic, i swear to god," you grumbled loud enough for mingyu to hear. being the menace that he is, he threw a balled-up straw wrapper at you. "okay, i'm going, bye." you said in one breath and ran to catch up with jihoon, not even bothering to look back.
"without even a kiss or anything?!" mingyu yelled obnoxiously, urging you to run faster.
jihoon caught glimpse of you and stopped so you can catch up, and catch your breath. "you okay?" jihoon asked in amusement.
you nodded. "yeah, let's go. don't want to keep nonie waiting," you said in between breaths. "mingyu better bring me food later because he pulled me from having a main character moment from the cafe." you huffed.
"are you sure you and mingyu are just friends?" jihoon asked with a raised brow.
"uji, just because you wound up dating your best friend, that doesn't mean the rest of us would have to do it too," you said teasingly. it wasn't a joke per se. "except for jeonghan, because you know, he hates being one-upped."
jihoon rolled his eyes, but it was evident he was turning red. "we won't tease you— if that's why you are so secretive about it." jihoon commented "although, i have to be honest, you two are more clingier than me and my partner."
"that's because you detest any form of physical affection," you pointed out.
"might i remind you that you also used to hate that too," jihoon proclaimed "until mingyu practically latched on to you like glue."
you ignored jihoon’s comment, mostly because he was right, but you’re not willing to admit that just yet. "it wasn't like he made me uncomfortable or anything— and i did say yes to the whole ‘if anyone asks, can i tell them that we’re dating’ thing, since it was bothering him" you rambled "he just said people wouldn't take his rejections seriously so he had to show people that he wasn't interested."
"so, what, is this a complicated way of projecting that you two are fake dating?"
"i guess so," you sighed. "i mean, i guess it's working because no one really bothered him anymore,”
"and you're okay with that?" jihoon asked.
"i mean, i get the occasional side eye from people, which i, too, return because i hate losing" you joked, "and if it keeps mingyu happy, then..."
"ya!" jihoon flicked you on the forehead, making you yelp, "we've all been friends for ages and i know your secret feelings for mingyu, so i know this is secretly killing you."
"wow," you were trying to act appalled, when jihoon was exactly right. "i do not have secret feelings for mingyu.”
“repeat it five more times, it might come true,” jihoon teased. “i see the way you look at him,” he points out as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“i look at him the same way i look at you guys,” you replied as you and jihoon entered the library, spotting vernon slouching at one of the chairs— bored out of his mind.
“you look at us like we’re stupid,” jihoon rolled his eyes.
“exactly.” you beamed at him.
“yn,” vernon looked surprised upon seeing you with jihoon. “i thought you were with mingyu.”
“why would you think that?” you asked him with a raised brow.
“because he wouldn’t stop moaning about how much you kept ignoring his calls earlier,” vernon replied. “and i thought you finally gave in.”
“now, why on earth would you assume that i would give in.” you crossed your arms, slightly annoyed of the idea that is your current legacy— the girl who will always give in for kim mingyu.
“because it’s mingyu,” vernon smirked “you would’ve done anything for him.”
Tumblr media
seungcheol and jeonghan’s quaint café was already alive as soon as you got there. it was said to be an intimate get together but you didn’t expect the amount of people who gathered for seungcheol’s party.
“yn!” vernon waved at you as soon he saw you emit from the doors. “were you alone? did you drive?”
“i came here straight from work,” you explained “i was told that mingyu’s planning to get wasted so i brought my car, in case any of you needs a ride.”
vernon raised his brow. “any of us? or just mingyu?”
“yah!” you flicked his forehead in response, making vernon yelp. “you’ve been spending way too much time with uji.”
“but it’s true,” you heard vernon mumble to himself.
“i was also told that it was an intimate get together” you said as you scanned the place filled with a good mix of familiar and unfamiliar faces.
“yeah, but knowing cheol, he probably wouldn’t pass up an opportunity to celebrate his day with the people he knew,” vernon commented as you two made your way towards the crowd, aiming to find the table where the rest of your friends are hopefully staying.
"happy birthday, cheollie!" you beamed at seungcheol, who just finished checking up on soonyoung and seungkwan. you gave a big wave to soonie and kwannie, making a mental note to properly say hi later.
you handed him the perfectly wrapped present that you may or may not have spent ages on wrapping— you had to mentally put yourself on a pinterest lockdown. “it’s from me and gyu,” you smiled at him.
“thanks, yn,” seungcheol smiles. “you know, you didn’t have to get me anything though.” his smile falters and you did have a sense on where this is going. “you could’ve just greeted me at 12 am in the group chat, didn’t leave me on read.” cheol sulks.
you rolled your eyes at the most incredulous take you heard from your friend. “choi seungcheol, i swear to god— you are the only person i know that bullies people into greeting them happy birthday as soon as the clocks hit midnight.”
“it’s a special day!” seungcheol pouts.
“whatever,” you dismissed him jokingly, earning you a dramatic huff from cheol. “where’s joshua? i haven’t seen him in ages,” you asked, peering around the room.
“why are you looking for another man when your boyfriend’s here?” mingyu suddenly pops out of nowhere, handing you a drink. seungcheol went to make rounds again, checking up on his guests. meanwhile vernon joined soonyoung and seungkwan’s table— which was only a couple of steps away from you two.
“gyu, it’s literally just us here.” you rolled your eyes at him as you gladly accepted the cola. “i don’t think we need to keep acting here,”
“kitten, there’s people here that don’t know that.”
“exactly,” you pointed out. “there’s no reason for us to start acting like a couple if the people here don’t even care if we’re ‘seeing’ each other.”
“but i do,” mingyu mumbled— closer to a whisper. he feared that if he said it to your face— or if you heard it, you’d think differently of him.
but you did hear it. you weren’t sure if it was the mixed chatter that’s messing up your hearing, or if you were just hearing things that you wanted to hear. nonetheless, it had you flustered.
you cleared your throat. “i’ll be back, gyu. i wanna check the food platter,” you said quietly before leaving.
gyu gave a tight nod, which it didn’t go unnoticed by the rest of the guys.
upon checking what cheol’s birthday spread, you felt a small tap on your shoulder. “pst!”
you were immediately filled with surprise and joy when you saw joshua standing behind you, smiling, and his arms spread out waiting for a hug.
“shua!” you almost shrieked, tackling him in a hug. “i missed you!”
joshua let out a small laugh. “i missed you too, ynnie.”
you quickly let go of the hug, remembering the text he sent you a few days ago and gave him a playful smack in the arm. “you know, you’re truly sick in the head for texting me that after you asked me for a favour.”
“i was just congratulating you for overcoming your pride and finally accepting the fact that you love mingyu,” joshua teased, nudging you playfully. “must you forget that i follow you on your private twitter?”
“literally shut the fuck up, shua,” you grumbled.
“wow,” joshua sighs, appalled “you kiss mingyu with that mouth?!”
“you annoying brat—“ you were about to smack him before joshua caught your hand, laughing at how flustered you were becoming.
across the room, mingyu was watching you and joshua. how playful you were around joshua. it’s not like he’s jealous or anything— because he’s not. or rather, he has no right to be.
seungkwan picked up on gyu’s slight change of behaviour and where his line of vision was projecting. “you know they’re just really close friends right?” seungkwan comments, trying to ease the conversation.
“hm?” mingyu pretended to not know what seungkwan was pertaining to.
of course, it didn’t work. it’s seungkwan we’re talking about here. he knows when things can get messy really fast and he knows when to stop it. the pointed look that seungkwan gave was also a telling sign that mingyu shouldn’t even bother to lie.
mingyu sighed before taking big gulps of his beer. “she’s allowed to like whomever,” mingyu finally says. “even if it’s my best friend, i’ll still support her.”
“oh, i cannot do this,” vernon muttered under his breath, leaving the table as soon as the words left mingyu’s mouth.
soonyoung was quietly listening to mingyu and seungkwan’s conversation. it was the quietest he has been all night, well, partly because he had already drank a bottle of soju. soonie was afraid that if he said something, it would incriminate you and your feelings for mingyu— and he’d rather not face your wrath.
“well, have you two talked about whatever happens if either of you wanted to date someone else?” seungkwan asked.
the question lingered around mingyu— it never crossed his mind. he had always assumed that you would always be there for him, which was extremely selfish considering you weren’t his to begin with.
mingyu’s silence was enough for seungkwan. he knew where mingyu’s feelings settled. quite, frankly, seungkwan knew where your feelings for mingyu too. but seungkwan knew better than to meddle, especially with unresolved feelings that involved two idiots.
mingyu watched you give joshua a small bag— a present, probably. joshua gave you a grateful smile and a big hug after, making you giggle at something he said. shua seemed happy around you and you were happy around him.
that hurt more than mingyu wanted to admit.
“yn,” joshua whispered as you were busy picking food. “how much are you willing to bet that mingyu’s jealous right now?” he asked upon catching a glimpse of mingyu, who was on his 3rd bottle of beer now and was watching them intently.
you snorted, not bothering to look at joshua. “at whom? is he eyeing on someone i didn’t know about?”
“why,” a twinkle formed in joshua’s eyes “are you jealous?”
“psh,” you didn’t even bother to look at him. joshua will read you right away. “why would i be? i’m not his girlfriend.”
“oh my god,” joshua laughed almost annoyingly that you’d rather take back the limited edition copy of the book that he asked you to get him— a favour for being a good friend, apparently. you knew damn well joshua was going to give that to someone else. “you are! oh, how cute.” he gushed.
“i am not,” you groaned, lying straight through your teeth.
“you should go back,” joshua laughs “as much as i have enjoyed seeing how you two really felt about each other, i don’t want to be the cause of whatever’s stopping you two from it.” with joshua’s ominous words and a small goodbye, he left.
“yn,” seungcheol suddenly crept behind you. “check up on, gyu. he’s drinking too much for someone who hasn’t eaten anything.”
“where did you even—“ your heart was racing, still startled at cheol.
“don’t ask questions and just go,” cheol said, pushing you towards mingyu.
you found mingyu absolutely buzzed beside seungkwan. mingyu rested his head on top of seungkwan’s shoulder, his eyes staring directly at you. seungkwan, on the other hand, was looking at you with pleading eyes— asking as if to save him from this misery.
“yah, kim mingyu,” you grabbed mingyu’s hand and attempted to pull him up from his chair “kwannie’s getting tired. leave him alone.”
“no, he’s not.” mingyu sulked. oh, he’s definitely drunk. “i don’t hear him complaining.”
“because seungkwannie’s too nice to say anything,” you replied, shooting seungkwan an apologetic smile. “get up, mingyu. let’s grab something for you to eat and maybe some water.”
“i don’t want to,” he moaned. mingyu straightened up his position and leaned his head back against the wall. “why are you here anyway? where’s joshua?” he asked, eyes closed.
seungkwan and soonyoung could sense tension between you and mingyu. the last thing they wanted was to witness what was about to unfold. “hyung,” seungkwan grabbed soonyoung’s arm. “let’s go grab something to drink.”
soonie, though nearly drunk, understood the situation and nodded.
as soon as the two left, you stood closer to mingyu, towering against him. “mingyu,” you patted his cheek softly, attempting to make him look at you. “c’mon.”
mingyu groaned, squeezing his eyes shut. it was ridiculous, you had no idea why he was acting like this. well, you had a hunch— joshua’s comment coming into mind— but it was ridiculous right? right?
mingyu eventually met your eyes— a bit red, probably from exhaustion. “where’s shua?” mingyu asked quietly.
you raised an eyebrow at him. “why? is there something you wanted to tell him?” you asked, sitting next to him.
mingyu turned his head against you, wondering why there’s a small smirk forming in your face.
“no,” mingyu huffed. “you looked like you were having tons of fun with him.”
“yeah, i was.” you replied casually, willing to play the game— willing to find out whether joshua’s hunch about mingyu being jealous was actually true. “joshua’s your friend, you know.”
“i know,” mingyu huffed, as if you were rubbing it to him. “so why are you here?” mingyu asked, sounding annoyed. almost.
“why? do you not want me here?”
“i do, but—“ mingyu ran a hand over his face out of frustration. come to think of it, he was slowly coming into his senses. wondering why he was acting like this. “you know what, you’re free to do whatever you want.”
“of course, i am.” you casually agreed.
“then why—“
you cut mingyu off and asked “gyu, why do you think i’m here?”
mingyu bit the inside of his cheeks before answering “to take care of me?”
“partly, yeah,” you laughed. “and it’s because i like spending time with you.”
mingyu’s sulky behaviour instantly dissipates, a large grin suddenly taking over his face. “you like spending time with me?” he asks, almost excitedly.
“there’s a lot of things i like about you, mingyu.” you answered, almost easily— not even knowing where this newfound confidence came from. “why do you think i keep doing things for you?”
“i thought you were just being overtly loyal to being my best friend,” he answered with a pout.
“gyu, i don’t think i could ever agree to do the things you asked me to if it were someone else.”
“you mean if joshua asked you to be his pretend girlfriend, you’d say no?” mingyu asked with a quirk brow.
“where is this jealousy from joshua coming from?!” you practically yelled, smacking his arm. “that’s your best friend, you brat.”
“yeah? so?” mingyu crossed his arms “he’s a nice guy— a gentleman, sweet. i wouldn’t be surprised if you liked him.”
“oh my god,” you groaned “kim mingyu, you are dense as fuck.”
“yah, why are you calling me stupid?” mingyu turns his body to fully face you.
“because i’ve been trying to tell you that i like you, stupid.” you said, irritated.
“you like me?” mingyu’s face lights up.
“yes, you weirdo.”
“if you like me then why are you calling me ‘weirdo’?!” mingyu pouts.
“because you’re weird! never had i seen someone react like this, even after they were told that someone likes them.”
“but you like meee,” mingyu practically sings. “i like you too, ynnie.” he said snuggling closer to you, resting his head on top of yours.
“oh, i know” you replied, unbothered by the look that mingyu gave you. “i knew the moment that shua hugged me and gave me his attention, i knew you were jealous.”
“you knew that i was jealous and you still didn’t do anything about it?”
“please,” you snorted “i was trying to prove the theory. i am, first and foremost, a research girly after all.”
“and what theory is that?” mingyu asked,
“that i was certain about my feelings about you,” you replied. “and that i just had to make sure you were too.”
“you did all that when i could’ve just kissed you?”mingyu baffles “you had me seeing red.”
“uh, not with beer-breath you’re not.” you said, crossing your arms. mingyu suddenly stands up, prompting you to ask “where are you going?”
“to ask cheol if he has any spare toiletries in his office,” mingyu answers in a hurry, making you laugh.

"hannie," you pouted at jeonghan who was busy with inventory. you met jeonghan at the quaint cafe that he and seungcheol own. jeonghan was terrorizing seungcheol a couple of hours ago before seungcheol got annoyed and had him do inventory instead.
jeonghan knew where this was going and he knew he'll probably give in to whatever favour you had in store because that's what good friends do. "what?"
"promise you won't get mad at me?" you asked with beaming eyes.
"did you lose your key to your place again?!" jeonghan had to change the locks of your door about a couple of times now and each time you get locked out, you'd have to crash with one of them— mostly jeonghan's place, though. "honestly, yn, at this point you just have to live with one of us."
"no," you drawled as you sat on one of the boxes in the storage room. "i mean, i'm having them changed now to passcode locks instead." you said with a sheepish smile.
all jeonghan could do was shake his head. "okay, do you need a place to crash for the meanwhile then?" he asked with a raised brow.
"actually, i'm here for a different thing, hannie." you said with the softest tone that you could muster— one that had jeonghan cross his arms out of sheer intrigue and the one that made you almost physically recoil. you were never one to act cute.
"yes, i'm listening," jeonghan was teasing and if you weren't so desperate you would've slapped the daylights out of him.
"so, you know how i was at my parents' place for dinner the other night?" you started off. you couldn't even look him in the eye, you were trying to calm yourself down by playing with your fingernails.
"yes, i had to pick you up that day because you were afraid of taking the subway," jeonghan said, arms still crossed.
"well, the thing is," you let out a nervous laugh, "i told my parents that we're—" you were cut off by the door swinging open.
"you two better not be making out back here," seungcheol said as soon as he entered the storage room, hands pressed against his eyes.
"you're fucking annoying, cheol," you threw a piece of trashed bubble wrap at him.
"well, what on earth could you two be doing back here?" he said with a teasing look. "unless–"
not willing to hear his comment further, "is there something you need, cheollie?" you asked with a forced smile.
"no, but there's someone looking for you by the register." cheol said, crossing his arms.
“who?” you asked.
cheol shrugged. “beats me, he looks like he’s around our age though. could it be one of the guys you had a blind date with?”
you were about to head to the floor when jeonghan pulled you aside.
“do you want me to come with you?” jeonghan asked. from the corner of his eye, jeonghan could see cheol fighting off a smirk.
“i think i’ll be fine,” you smiled at him. “thanks, hannie.”
while you were out to seek whoever was looking for you, seungcheol nudged jeonghan playfully. "do you want me to come with you?" seungcheol mocked jeonghan's tone, teasing him.
"shut up, cheol." jeonghan grumbled, annoyed.
"dude, it's so obvious that you like her." cheol laughed "i don't get why you just can't ask her out."
"because," jeonghan sighed "it'll just be weird and awkward and i don't want to lose her."
"so you're fine with all of this?" cheol nodded in your direction. "even when there are random guys popping out of nowhere?"
"hey, it's not like she can do anything about it!" jeonghan pointed out defensively "besides, she can see whoever she want."
"yeah, whatever." cheol grumbled, unconvinced. jeonghan and seungcheol eventually headed out to the floor, only to find you talking to a guy who seemed persistent on not leaving you alone.
"i told you, peter," you sighed in frustration "i'm sure you're nice and all, but there wasn't any spark, like at all."
"but—"
"but nothing! i'm sure your mom would understand why the date didn't work out." you said, crossing your arms. you were getting frustrated.
"is it because i talked too much?"
"well—" you were cut off when jeonghan suddenly appeared beside you, placing a firm hand on your waist. jeonghan would always observe first before he intervened.
peter’s eyes flickered to where jeonghan’s hand was and immediately got the message.
"actually, it’s because i’m seeing someone else.” you answered a little too gleefully. everything is falling into place, it seems. jeonghan, on the other hand, was feeling a bit
peter, dumbfounded by the fact that you were already seeing someone after just 2 weeks of being set up on a blind date with him, apologized and left quickly.
as soon as peter was out of sight, you gave jeonghan a small hug. "thanks, hannie," you mumbled.
"it's no problem," jeonghan chuckled. "what was it that you wanted to say earlier?" he asked, referring to the conversation you two had before seungcheol barged into the storage room.
"oh, well, it's actually pretty convenient that you said that to peter because..." you trailed off.
"because?" jeonghan was looking at you intently, curiosity dancing in his eyes.
"it's funny, actually." you let out a strained laugh. you felt like your heart was going to explode. “promise you won’t judge?”
"i promise. besides, how bad can it be?" he was amused at how awkward you’ve gotten. “unless it has something to do with what you said earlier about us dating—“ by this time, you were avoiding your eyes. “no way!” jeonghan exclaimed. “did you tell your mom that we’re dating?”
"hannie!” you smacked his arm “you promised!”
“okay, okay,” he grinned. “but why me?” he asked, wiggling his eyebrows.
you gave him a pointed look. “i don’t like what you’re insinuating, yoon jeonghan.”
“i’m just curious.” he raised his arms in defence. “i’m absolutely not saying that this has anything to do when we were in high school.”
“oh god, not this again.” you moaned. “for the last time, it was just a tiny crush, yoon jeonghan!”
“if it was a tiny crush then why did you look so excited after we kissed.”
“seriously, jeonghan, we were 15!” you groaned. “it was the teenage hormones!”
“and?” jeonghan gave you a blank stare “you still walked away with my first kiss!”
“it was spin the bottle!” you argued “and that was my first kiss too, dumbass!”
“that still doesn’t change the fact that you kissed me in high school.”
“hannie, it’s been more than a decade, please let it go.” you groaned, embarrassed. “it’s not like you reciprocated my feelings back then.” you thought.
“fine,” jeonghan caved in “but if this is your way of saying that you still have feelings for me, then there will be consequences.”
you rolled your eyes at his parting comment. only yoon jeonghan can make such comments enough to make you feel dizzy.
the day you invited jeonghan for a proper dinner, as per your mom’s request, you had no idea that there will be intense reactions.
“now what’s this dinner i keep hearing about you and jeonghan,” minghao asked as he watched you carefully pack the art materials that hao has been wishing to borrow.
“my mom invited him for dinner, for formalities apparently,” you replied putting air quotes on the word ‘formalities’.
your mom had forced you to invite your ‘boyfriend’ for a proper dinner in the upcoming weekend. you were opposed to it at first because it was weird. they already know jeonghan, they’ve had meals together. you two have been friends since you were children.
apparently, this is a big deal for your mom. she had always been rooting for you and jeonghan to become a couple ever since you were teenagers. however, she lost hope when she found out that jeonghan had been dating around and you were constantly met with failed relationships. hence, she took matters into her own hands and started setting you up in blind dates. suffice to say, your mom has been unsuccessful.
“so it’s true?” hao asked with a teasing smirk. you looked at him expectantly, waiting for him to continue. “that you two are dating?”
“it’s only been 2 days, how—“ you were more impressed by the fact that hao already knew about the dinner.
“is it true then?” he pressed on.
“the dinner? yeah,” you answered innocently, earning you a playful smack with a pillow— courtesy of hao.
“you damn well know what i mean,” hao said, giving you another smack with a pillow. “did jeonghan finally admit his eternal love for you?”
“hao, do you actually think—“
“yes.” hao answered, not even letting you finish. “i do know this because i’ve seen him flirt with you relentlessly, even when we’re around.”
“hao, must you forget that he would act like that around anything that has a pulse.” you replied. “plus, i don’t think nagging people into wearing a jacket so they won’t get cold is considered flirting.”
“babe, he nagged you into bringing a jacket because he wanted to spend more time with you while we were at around the campfire.” minghao pointed out.
“okay, but he also said that to mingyu!” you reasoned.
“that’s because mingyu’s an idiot.” hao deadpanned, making you gasp.
“hao!”
“what? i love mingyu with all might heart, but seriously. the man never dresses according to the weather.” he mumbled. “and you’re not going to steer the topic away!”
you huffed, crossing your arms. “we’re not actually dating, hao.”
“mhm,” minghao hummed, obviously not convinced. “so, what prompted all of this to happen then?”
“i needed to get mom off my back! the blind dates were starting to get ridiculous.” you said, exasperated.
“so you told her that you and jeonghan are dating?” you nodded. “and now jeonghan is your fake boyfriend?” again, you nodded. “okay, then why did you ask him when you could’ve asked me?” minghao pressed on.
“hao, is this your way of professing your undying love for me?” you teased, playfully batting your eyelashes at him.
minghao smacked you with a pillow in return. “i sincerely wish that you can hear the words you’re saying,” hao deadpanned. “so, aside from me, does anyone know you’re fake dating then?”
“well, on my end, it’s just you, hao.” you said, passing him the tote bag full of art supplies. “unless jeonghan says anything but i totally doubt it.”
the day of the dreaded dinner came and of course, hao was the first to pester you by texting: "good luck on ur dinner babe! lmk if there's a proposal by the end of the night >:)"
you rolled your eyes at the text and replied with a middle-finger emoji, diverting your attention back to your mom who seemed like she won a million dollars.
both of your parents were sitting across you and jeonghan, so you can see the flashy smile she has directly. jeonghan was playing with your free hand underneath the table. it’s not like he was nervous about the dinner, but holding your hand was enough to put him at ease.
"you know, i had an inkling that you two would eventually get together" your mom said with a smirk.
“how so?” jeonghan asked with a teasing smile, as if to torture you even more. sitting next to him gave you the privilege to slap him on the thigh, letting go from his grip. jeonghan gave a muted yelp, indicating the pain, before holding your hand again.
“oh you know,” your mom trailed off, as if to build suspense, making you die a little bit more. “i’ve always seen the way you two would look at each other, the playful bickers, how you treat each other,” your mom nodded to your dad, who was looking at your mom with adoring eyes. “we’ve been there.”
“did you hear that?” jeonghan leaned closer to your ear “that’s going to be us, one day.” making you squirm from your seat.
“hannie!” you pushed his face far from you “quit it.” you hissed under your breath, suddenly feeling embarrassed.
“oh, i’m just so happy that you two are together now.” your mom sighed happily. “you two look happier around each other.”
“we do, don’t we?” jeonghan agreed with a soft smile, enough to make you feel like none of this was an act. in fact, a small part of you wanted to believe that this is not all an act for your mom.

jun was always curious as to how you've managed to just sit there and laugh at chan’s comment when you're in the same room as seungcheol, let alone show up at seungcheol and jeonghan’s quaint cafe.
he knew better than to pry you for questions, of course, but knowing how deep your relationship ran with cheol, it was astounding to see you light on your feet.
“junnie,” you nudged jun who was sitting right next to you, evidently staring at you. “is there something wrong?” you asked quietly, careful not to attract any attention. most of the attention were on seungkwan and chan anyway as they were busy bantering about a prolonged birthday gift.
jun snapped out of his thoughts and shook his head no, a sheepish smile forming in face. “sorry, i didn’t mean to stare.” he apologized, scratching the back of his head.
“it’s all good,” you laughed softly. “sorry, i must’ve been talking a lot, huh? it’s just—” you sighed “it’s been a while since i saw you guys.”
“no, no,” jun was quick to dispute whatever it is that you were thinking. “it’s nothing, ynnie. don’t worry about it.” he smiled. “it’s just nice having you here.”
“it’s nice being here too,” you said half-heartedly, while stealing a quick glance at cheol, who was already looking at you from across the room.
Tumblr media
a couple of days before you showed up at the café, you received a text from soonyoung, asking forcing you to attend this exclusive get-together.
the heads up was nice and it was sweet that they miss you because you miss them too— you were all friends first, of course.
“haohao,” you called your friend who was busy cooking in your kitchen. minghao was the only friend from the group who still hung out with you regularly— mainly because you two don’t live that far from each other.
“yeah?” he called back.
you walked towards the kitchen, leaning against the pillar. “were you ever going to tell me about it?” you pointed out, still looking at the message in your screen.
“tell you what?” hao asked, confused.
“the hang out.”
“what hang out?” hao knew exactly what you were talking about though. he was just trying to be… careful. right, careful.
“c’mon, hao,” you crossed your arms. you weren’t mad though, you knew exactly why they were doing this— why they’re trying so hard. it’s hard enough to get everyone gather at the same day, however, it’s even harder to have your friends— two of which used to date— to be at the same place. “it’s fine, you know.”
“well,” hao turned off the stove, carefully plating your food. “do you wanna go?”
“i mean, it’s been a while since i saw the boys together,” you mumbled, playing with your nails. “and besides, i miss them.”
“them?” hao smirked, as if he knew damn well that you were pertaining to someone else.
“shut up, minghao.” you grumbled, taking a seat at the table, the smell of hao’s delicious masterpiece filling up your nostrils. “thank you for the food.”
hao hummed in response, watching you as you eat your food with a pout, making him smile.
silence enveloped the rest of the meal. it wasn’t until you were washing the dishes when hao suddenly asked “you know, no one really figured out why you two broke up.” you almost dropped the plate you were holding upon hearing the question. “all i remember was cheol wanted to drink to death one day. if it wasn’t for shua and jeonghan that made him pull from his senses, i honestly don’t know what would’ve happened.”
“we were too young. too passionate, too—” you answered, trying to think of an answer that made sense because frankly, you didn’t know why either. “hao, we were each other’s world.” your voice drifts off.
minghao just listened intently to you. he could never really relate to what was said, because what you and cheol had was something different. it was never just young love, it was something more.
Tumblr media
“cheollie, what if—” you groaned “what if i just drop out.” you said, closing your laptop in frustration. seungcheol laughed, making you glare at him. “you dare laugh? at my frustration?”
“i’m sorry, babe, but you’re just too cute.” he smiles, pinching your cheeks. “i’m also sorry because you can’t drop out.”
“and why not?” you quirked a brow at him.
“because your dad will have me delivered on a silver platter if he finds out i encouraged his daughter to drop out,” cheol replied making you laugh “and besides, dating a well-known curator is on the list of my life-long dreams.”
you rolled your eyes at the cheesy comment, fighting off a smile. “a list?” you asked, to which cheol nodded. “what else is on that list?”
cheol bit the insides of his cheeks, suddenly feeling flustered.
“wow,” you laughed “choi seungcheol, are you embarrassed?”
“yah! i told you i hate it when you call me that,” seungcheol pouts, crossing his arms.
“you’re being a baby.”
“that’s fine because i am your baby,” he grins, making you snort laughing. one of seungcheol’s dreams was to make you laugh till the rest of your lives. that was enough for cheol.
Tumblr media
“ynnie,” chan hands you the third round of shots. “i heard you’re holding another— uh…” chan looked around, trying to remember the word.
“exhibition, chan.” jeonghan finished with a laugh. “you need to slow down, we’re only three rounds in.”
“hehe,” chan giggles “sorry.”
“it’s okay, chan,” you laughed before taking the shot. “but yeah, it’s going to be my first time exhibiting my own work.”
“that’s so cool, ynnie,” seokmin smiles adoringly at you. “we’re so proud of you.”
“thanks, you guys,” you replied shyly. “i— uh, it really means a lot.”
“of course,” jun nudged you playfully “we’re always here to cheer you on, you know.”
a collective mutter of agreements filled the coffee shop during its after-hours— a long string of support followed one after the other. from the group of muttered agreements, one voice seemed to stand out from others. one voice that meant so much to you. one that you longed to hear for so long.
seungcheol. he was looking at you with those adoring eyes, the ones that filled you so much comfort whenever you looked at them. there was a small smile forming in his lips— god, those lips. words cannot describe how much you miss those lips. it hurt that even after 3 years of your break up, you still long for him. but at least he was happy, right?
Tumblr media
a couple of days before the planned hangout, the boys were gathered at heaven’s cloud coffee roasters— the coffee shop that seungcheol and jeonghan proudly own.
“so are we all meeting here then?” joshua asked, taking a sip of his iced americano.
“fine by me,” jeonghan shrugged “i just need to put a notice that we’re closing early that day.”
seungcheol hummed in agreement, the voices slowly drowning out. he was busy looking at your instagram art page. again.
whenever there was a fighting itch that he missed you, he would find his way to your instagram account. you still followed each other on your personal accounts, but you weren’t really active there. you had an art account where you post nearly every day. it wasn’t just drawings and paintings that were on that account, you also posted your letters there too. for seungcheol, that account was more personal as it encapsulated everything that was needed to know about you.
upon quietly scrolling through your account, he found a letter that you posted a couple of days ago, one that hit close to home.
“the last time i fell in love— i was twenty. i was probably too young to be thinking about love, but still, it was a force that shaped my entire perception of love.
at twenty-seven, i still have yet to feel it again. and if the multiverse is real, i hope a version of me finds someone who would still move mountains for her— to be loved as much as she loves.
because i learned the hard way that some people are meant to find love, yet they aren’t meant to keep it.”
joshua caught a glimpse of what seungcheol was looking at when he sat next to him. he was one of the few people who knew where cheol’s feelings lied with you. joshua’s one of the few people who also knew about your feelings with cheol, especially involving that art account that you practically dedicated to seungcheol.
joshua was not a betting person, but if he were, he knew that seungcheol had no idea that that art account of yours only existed because of seungcheol.
“are you looking at her account again?” joshua asked cheol quietly while the other guys were talking about what to eat and drink on the upcoming hangout.
“psh, what?” cheol instantly exited the page, putting a false face of appall “of course not.”
joshua rolled his eyes, knowing damn well that his friend was lying straight through his face. “whatever, cheol.”
knowing there’s no point in lying, especially towards joshua, seungcheol lets out a deep sigh. “i miss her, that’s all.”
joshua hummed, choosing to stay quiet. joshua knew about your true feelings for cheol when he, minghao, and seungkwan were in your apartment that one rainy night. you had invited them for dinner and to catch up because you haven’t talked in so long. drinks were involved so one thing led to the other, next thing joshua knew, you were still moping about your break-up with cheol.
“god, i miss yn,” soonyoung groaned out of the blue. soonie’s comment was enough attention for the boys to look at him, some of them with widened eyes.
“what?” soonie asks, almost innocently. “it’s been awhile since we were all hanging out together, i’ve always loved having her around.”
“soonyoung,” jeonghan warns him quietly, practically holding himself back from gesturing to seungcheol.
“cheol, hyung, you’ve moved on right?” soonyoung asks carelessly, making vernon— who was sitting quietly in the corner— practically choke on his drink. “you wouldn’t mind if invite ynnie right?”
jeonghan and joshua both looked at seungcheol the same time, with pairs of eyes full of curiosity, watching what cheol’s about to say.
cheol cleared his throat, “yeah, it’s fine,”
soonyoung grins— a little too mischievous as seungkwan would note. “perfect, i’ll text her now,” soonie says as he tapped furiously on his phone.
it’s not like you and seungcheol have been avoiding each other, that’s not it at all! you two would always see each other at a friend’s birthday or an event where you two have common circles— you two would always smile at each other, say a quick hi, but that’s the extent of it. and even then, you two were always surrounded by other people too.
Tumblr media
“yn,” seungcheol practically seethes your name. “look at me.”
you hate it when you two fight, it only morphs you two into monsters.
“seungcheol,” you had to take a deep sigh before saying anything further as you’re trying to calm yourself down. “i’m tired. can we not do this right now?”
“no, yn, because you always do this.” seungcheol was getting frustrated too. he was always patient around you, but he is human after all. life is sometimes, though often, frustrating. “you always avoid the problem, even if it begs to be confronted.”
this got you heated because seungcheol was right, and it annoyed you that he was right. you don’t like confrontations. in fact, you hated them. for the entirety of your relationship, you could only count the number of times you initiated the apology.
“then what do you want me to do, cheol?” you asked, almost in a whisper. you closed your laptop, knowing well enough that you weren’t going to finish the report you needed for your internship.
“talk to me, yn.” cheol practically begged. “what’s going on?”
“i— i’m tired, cheol.” tears formed on the brims of your eyes.
“okay, we can take a break from studying,” cheol nodded, closing his laptop as well. you two had been practically living in the library for the past couple of weeks, trying to finish the your last semester head-strong.
“no, cheol, i meant—“ you couldn’t even bear to finish the sentence and even then, cheol knew what you were trying to say. “there’s never a day that we don’t fight and it’s—“
“frustrating?” seungcheol finishes for you, a small disbelief present in his tone.
“yeah,” you answered throwing your head back, trying not to cry but it doesn’t work. your tears kept betraying you.
he wanted to be mad because how on earth are you able to just throw a 4 year-long relationship with ease? but seungcheol cannot be mad— not at your frustration, not at you. because for this relationship to work, you two need to be invested in it.
it has been suffocating for you, it has been frustrating for cheol.
“okay,” cheol clears his throat, wiping his tears furiously. “let’s take a break then.”
“okay.” you whispered.
you two stayed in the library for another hour, bid each other a quiet goodbye and left on your separate ways— never to speak to each other again.
Tumblr media
as the night gets longer, more drinks have been consumed. it was starting to get rowdy too— soonyoung and seokmin being the cause of it all. they kept squeezing out drinking games that was enough to keep everyone feeling buzzed.
you, on the other hand, started to feel like the room was getting stuffy. so you excused yourself for a minute and sat at one of the patio chairs, nursing the alcoholic drink that you were given earlier.
you could hear the laughter emitting inside the café and you couldn’t help but at smile at how some things never really change.
you heard a faint sound of bells from the door, signalling that someone was coming.
“oh, i’m sorry, i didn’t—“ you whipped your head around and saw that cheol was standing there, a drink in his hand too. “i was just hoping to get some fresh air and—“
“cheol, it’s fine,” you reassured him, adding a small smile. “i know how drinking throughout that can be too much for you.” you nodded at your friends inside.
cheol lets out a small laugh, “yeah.” he leaned against the wall, enough to give you two some space from each other. a tiny part of cheol couldn’t help but feel happy that you still know that tidbit about him.
there was a blanket of silence that enveloped the two of you. it wasn’t awkward per se— but this was the first time you two were left alone in a while.
“so how are yo—“ “are you doing ok—“ you both said at the same time, making you laugh.
a soft smile appears on cheol’s face. it’s been a while since cheol saw you laugh— well anything that involved him, really.
“heaven’s cloud, huh?” you started off, admiring the exteriors of the café. “i’m glad you’ve finally reached your dreams, cheol.”
“i did promise you that i’ll run a coffee shop one day,” cheol said with a proud look on his face. heaven’s cloud is seungcheol’s pride and joy. all throughout his university years, he would find himself cooped inside the cafés near the university. it never occurred to him that taking care of people, by providing a warm cup of coffee and a place of comfort, was something he’d be doing.
cheol likes to think that it was you that led him here. he would always accompany you at coffee shops to study, would always buy you coffee and sweets. he did it so much that he would start doing the same thing to the guys. he would often buy them coffee unprompted, would feed them sweets.
they found it odd at first, because seungcheol was not the type to do all of that unless he was asked, but they’ve quickly learned to accept it because they saw how much it meant to cheol.
you were joking when you suggested that cheol should open up a café when he brought at least a dozen iced americanos to you and the rest of the guys one day. cheol remembered how he smirked at you and said, “wanna bet?”
so really, you led cheol here. cheol knew that you would never believe him if he said that, but it’s true. you hold so much influence in his life that it kills him that you’re not actively in his life anymore.
“i’m proud of you, cheol.” you said softly, tucking a stray hair behind your ear— suddenly not knowing what to do. “i hope you never forget that.”
"i know," cheol replied in a whisper. "i'm proud of you too, you know. always.”
"thanks, cheol."
Tumblr media
“why do i have to give it to her?” cheol grumbled while he was fixing his hair, checking for any hair that’s out of place.
“you say that and yet you’re acting like this is the first time yn is going to see you,” jeonghan teased with a smirk as he watched seungcheol check his hair every 5 seconds at the reflection of his car window.
joshua and seungkwan laughed quietly at jeonghan’s comment, causing seungcheol to glare at them— which only makes them laugh even more.
seungcheol chose to ignore jeonghan’s sly comment. “where are they anyway?” he asked, checking his phone for the time. 10:07 am. The exhibition has started, cheol thought.
kwannie, cheol, shua, and hannie were waiting outside the gallery for the rest of the guys to arrive. hao was already inside helping you with your exhibit— as cheol assumed— along with vernon, who was kind enough to offer his help.
“jun texted that they had to pick up the cake and that they’ll just meet us inside,” seungkwan said out loud. “apparently, mingyu overslept.”
“that sounds about right,” jihoon commented as he, wonwoo, and soonyoung walked towards where cheol and the rest of the guys were waiting.
“here,” soonyoung handed cheol the bouquet of pink carnations that cheol specifically asked. “since you were so adamant about the kind of flowers and the colour.”
“oh, we’ve already decided that cheol’s going to hand yn the flowers.” shua smirked.
“i’m surprised you actually went,” wonu pointed out, knowing there is still some odd tension between you and cheol.
“uh yeah, she texted me about it.” cheol cleared his throat “she actually invited me here.”
the way cheol said it so casually, the way the words just escaped his mouth like silk— it was enough for the guys to stop in their tracks and look at cheol like he grew two heads.
“no fucking way,” jihoon comments out of astonishment, breaking the ice.
Tumblr media
“oh my god, you guys actually came?” you were greeted with a bunch of warm smiles from the boys, each of them giving you a hug. “i thought you guys were busy?”
“are you kidding? we would never miss this for the world,” seungkwan commented as he gave you a tight hug. “besides, that was just soonie hyung’s elaborate plan of surprise.”
“well, consider me surprised.” you laughed as soonie gave you a tight squeeze. “feel free to roam around, there’s refreshments by the right corner.”
you have just hugged every one of them until you reached cheol— who was a sight for sore eyes. after being broken up for about 3 years now, it still baffles you that his presence alone makes your heart flutter.
you don’t even know why you invited him personally— you haven’t talked that much since the hangout at his café. actually, that’s a lie. you knew damn well why you invited him. a part of him lives within you— may it be in your artworks or your writing.
seungcheol was hesitant— he didn’t know whether he should hug you or not. he literally stopped in the middle of his tracks, his arms almost at mid-air. it was painstakingly obvious too— vernon, who was busy ushering people and caught wind of the situation, couldn’t hide his grimace.
you heard seungkwan’s panicked voice, forcing the others to go with him and leave you two alone. they were dying from curiosity, but even the strong-willed jeonghan could not stomach the awkwardness in the air.
as soon as the guys left, cheol had the courage to finally to say something. anything. “yn,” he cleared his throat “these are for you.” cheol said, handing you the bouquet of pink carnations shyly.
“oh, these are gorgeous,” you sighed happily “thank you, cheol.”
“of course, anything for you,” cheol said a little too eagerly. he cleared his throat, trying to mask his excitement. “it’s from all of us, really.”
“oh?” cheol raised his eyebrow at your confused tone. his eyes followed yours and saw that you were reading the card that came with the flowers— which flustered you immediately upon reading the note.
for the entire time that cheol was holding that bouquet of flowers, not once did he notice the card that was practically sticking out like a sore thumb.
“uh— can i read it?” cheol asked, immediately walking closer to you. you were about to pull the card so he can read it on his own but he was already mere inches away from you, peering over your shoulder.
this was the first time in 3 years that you two were this close to each other. his perfume immediately filling your nostrils, taking you back from how your relationship used to be. your heart was practically pounding. it also didn’t help the fact that he was still wearing the same perfume that you got him during your 2nd anniversary.
“yn,
life had so much colour when i looked into your eyes. it’s a strange thing, but that’s just how it is when you love someone.
yours forever, c.”
the typewritten note was staring back at cheol as if it crawled from the box of things he kept in his office and in to the bouquet. seungcheol wasn’t going to deny that he wrote that note to you— because he did. it’s just, the note wasn’t meant to be included in the bouquet.
he wrote that note a year ago— still in the process of trying to move on from your break up, even though it’s been two years. he was so close to mailing you that note along with a birthday gift last year. he only stopped himself because one, that would be weird and two, he would look desperate. cheol knows he is, but he wouldn’t admit that.
the guys like to believe that he never really got over you, which was obvious, because look at what happened. this also begs the question as to who saw the note in his office and who was the culprit to blame.
“cheol—“
“yn, i think we need to talk.”
Tumblr media
you two started strolling around the gallery, not knowing where to go or how to start.
you stopped in the farthest corner of the gallery, near the fire exit. far from everyone, you both assumed. “cheol, the note—“
“i didn’t write it,” cheol immediately answers. his comment disappointed you as a part of you still longed for the idea that he still loved you.
cheol saw how your face faltered upon hearing his comment which panicked him. “i mean i did write it but not recently— i wrote it over a year ago. i was hung up on you, i still am i think, i just i don’t even know—“
“cheol, breathe,” you said grabbing his hands, rubbing small circles with your thumb. “it’s okay.”
you led him to one of the benches in the gallery, just so he can collect himself and so that you can calm yourself down as well.
a couple of minutes after cheol had eventually calmed down and has had a few minutes to take a breather, you asked “is everything okay? i’ve never seen you ramble like this.”
“yn,” cheol sighed, embarrassed at his erratic behaviour “i’m sorry.”
“for what?”
“well for rambling, first off,” cheol lets out an embarrassed laugh “but i’m sorry for everything.”
you were confused. “cheol, i don’t think you have anything to apologize for. you didn’t do anything.”
“exactly, i didn’t do anything,” cheol was frustrated. “i should’ve fought for you, for us. i should’ve done something, anything—“
“cheol, i’m so confused.” you were about to cry from frustration “what are you trying to say?”
“yn,” cheol takes a huge breath “why did you invite me here?”
“what do you mean?”
“here, in one of the most important days of your life, in your career.” cheol almost pleads for an answer “why am i here, ynnie?”
“because…”
“because?”
“because you’re important, cheol. you will always be a part of my life. a piece of you lives within my artwork, my writing.” tears were starting to fall from your eyes “you’re in everything that i do, cheol.” you let out a small laugh, slightly embarrassed. cheol started wiping the tears from your face. “you’re here because i want you to be here.”
“what ever happened to us, yn?” cheol asked, looking at you straight in the eyes.
“it wasn’t our time, cheol— i remember us fighting a lot.” you sighed “i loved you, i still do, but we were hurting each other a lot.”
cheol hummed, because he remembered the same thing. he wished it was different, but even he knew that you two would’ve ruined each other.
“do you think it’s our time now?” cheol asked, looking at the artworks on the wall.
“maybe,” you replied softly, a small smile playing on your lips.

hao scoffs at the screen when the main lead from the movie that you two are watching meets for the first time, at the most ridiculous instance. the meet cute being: the guy practically throws himself to save the girl from a moving vehicle.
hao believes that is not cute.
his reaction caused you to look up at him with a glint in your eyes, ready to annoy your boyfriend even more.
“where is the hostility coming from, lovey?” you asked, sitting straight.
hao sighs, “i know that look.”
“what look?” you blinked innocently at him, knowing full well you’re going to pick on his hatred for romantic clichés.
minghao mutters a long string of words as he pulls you back in his chest, wrapping his arms around you.
you let out a chuckle, you knew what he was trying do. it’s cute, that your haohao would do anything to disassociate himself from romantic clichés, but the man was the most romantic person you’ve ever known. he was your romantic cliché.
“baby,” he practically whines “can we watch something else?”
“what do you mean? you promised you’d watch this with me,” you said as jennifer lopez’s the wedding planner played on the screen.
“you don’t even like this movie,” hao reasons out. “i don’t even know why you’re willing to sit through this.”
“it was included in the list of films that has the best meet cutes,” you said reading off your phone.
“are you still on that?” he dreads, you felt his chin rest on the top of your head.
“it’s because what we had was a meet cute!” you insisted. “don’t you remember?”
“oh, i remember alright,” hao mutters into your head.
Tumblr media
it was a rainy friday afternoon, the sound of children were slowly starting to dissipate as the day goes longer.
“ms. ln,” min tugs on your skirt as you watched the rain pour harder than what was anticipated in the weather forecast. “do you have an umbrella?” her eyes practically sparkled as soon as the words left her mouth.
“why sweetie? do you need one?” you asked her, crouching down. “i don’t have one with me, but i can text miss lee if she has an extra one in her classroom that you can borrow.”
she shook her head no, her pigtails swinging along, making you smile. “my uncle is picking me up and i want to know if you’re getting home safely.” she says with a smile. liu xiaomin has always been looking out for her peers and it was no wonder that her warm-hearted nature reaches you. she is a bundle of sunshine and you're lucky enough to have her in your class.
“that’s so sweet of you min," you replied with a soft smile "but i think i'll just wait for the rain to stop."
"what if it doesn’t miss?” she asked with a pout.
“then i’ll just find a way to enjoy the rain,” you said, patting her head. or you can call a cab, but that doesn’t sound as romantic as enjoying the rain.
“okay,” she sighs, sitting at the front steps of the school. “i hope uncle haoi gets here soon.”
you glanced at your watch, it was 10 minutes past dismissal. although min’s uncle is not extremely late, she has been waiting for quite some time now. and with the non-stop pouring rain? it was bound that traffic is up on the horizons.
“do you want me to wait with you, min?” you asked her, feeling bad that she’s the only student left waiting for her ride. xiaomin nods eagerly as she scoots to the side, signalling you to sit next to her.
you two were quietly watching the rain hit the pavement when min asks suddenly, “miss ln, do you have a boyfriend?”
you practically choke on your spit at her question. how does a five-year old even know about that? “sweetie, how do you know about that?”
“i’m five years old, miss, i’m not a baby,” she said with a huff, making you laugh.
“of course,” you tried your best to rationalize, giving her a smile. “but no, i don’t have one.”
“oh, you should meet my uncle haoi then,” she smiles, satisfied with your answer.
you raised an eyebrow at her sudden interest. “and why’s that?”
“i keep hearing my mom tell uncle haoi to get a girlfriend.”
“okay…” you trailed off— you don’t really know how to respond. you barely know this uncle haoi that she keeps bringing up because you’ve only met min’s parents— both of whom usually take turns in picking and dropping her off.
“i think uncle haoi will like you because you’re pretty and you’re very kind and you like painting and you like painting your nails and you like clouds…”
as min went on an endless ramble about how her uncle haoi would like you immediately, you received a text from min’s mom, saying that min’s uncle will be a couple more minutes late.
you tried to suppress a sigh, knowing that you were going to stay a little longer. maybe it was the friday rush, but you were hoping to get home earlier so you can crash on your sofa, catch up on your shows, and be completely static for hours on end.
“miss ln?” min calls your name as you’ve spaced out for a bit. “i think that’s uncle haoi’s car,” min says as you two stared at the black suv that pulled up in front of the school.
“okay, sweetie, let’s just wait till your uncle introduces himself and picks you up personally from me, okay?”
min was more than happy to do so. “uncle haoi!” min calls his name as she waves her hand, practically jumping in excitement.
one look at min’s uncle and you knew exactly who he is. you’ve recognized that tall build that’s approaching you, especially with an umbrella in hand— umbrella man finally has a name.
‘uncle haoi’ looks to be in the same case as you. as soon as his eyes landed on you, he recognized who exactly you were— the girl in the rain.
min makes a run for it and greets her uncle with a hug, making sure to stay under the umbrella. this makes hao melt a bit, lowering his guard down. his features soften at the sweet gesture of his niece.
“it’s you again,” hao mutters as he reaches you, noticing the familiar glint in your eyes.
“uncle haoi, i presume?”
“xu minghao,” hao clarifies curtly, “or just hao.”
“well, okay, hao,” you forced a smile. “here are min’s things.” you said as you handed him her things.
hao puts on min’s backpack and picks his niece up, settling her in his left arm as min clings onto him with a smile on her face.
“miss ln, did you bring your umbrella?” min asks as she whips her head to face you.
hao looks at you for an answer, he had an inkling of what your answer is going to be.
you gave her a forced smile, avoiding eye contact with minghao— his piercing stare was practically boring a hole in your skin. “i’ll just call for a cab, sweetie, don't worry about me."
"uncle haoi," min pouts at her uncle.
"yes, honey?" hao's expression softens upon hearing the soft call from his niece.
"can miss ln come with us?" her eyes practically twinkled as she gave hao the cutest puppy dog eyes she could muster.
hao was caught off-guard, this was the first time min expressed this kind of closeness towards her teachers.
the truth was, you were min's favourite teacher— or in this case, substitute teacher. you were only filling in for the last three months of the school year due to a teacher's personal emergency. but within the short amount of time you had with the students, they found a surprising pull towards you— a bond so tight that even surprised yourself.
unbeknownst to everyone, including min herself, min was playing matchmaker. since uncle haoi and miss ln were her favourites, it would only make sense to combine them together. right?
"um," hao turns to you, but you had an unreadable expression on your face. "i can drop you off at your place, if you want? it'll save you time, and the faire."
"thank you, but it's fine, you two go on ahead." you said, trying your best not to sound dismissive. hao, however, picked up on your tone and gave you a curt nod. "maybe next time, okay?"
"you promise, miss ln?" min asked with a pout. you gave her a nod, making her smile again— satisfied with your answer. "okay, bye miss ln!!" min enthusiastically waved goodbye.
you watched hao skillfully settle min onto her car seat as he tried his best not to get her soaked from the rain. you were about to order yourself a cab when hao approached you with an undiscernible look on his face.
"yes, mr. xu?" you looked up from your phone and blinked at him innocently.
with no other words, hao hands you his umbrella— the exact same way he did the first time he met you.
you just stared at his hand that was firmly grasping the handle of the umbrella as the rain poured down on him, effectively soaking his hair and the white cardigan he was wearing.
"just take it,” was all he said as he forced the umbrella on your hand and ran back to his car.
Tumblr media
“okay, but that was not the first time we’ve met, lovey,” you said as you looked up from his chest. the movie was now forgotten.
“i know, but that was the first time jiejie teased me about you,” hao practically grumbles upon memory, his cheeks were turning red.
your eyes sparkled as soon as the words left his mouth. “how did i not know about this?” you practically squealed at the information.
“oh shut it, yn,” hao playfully puts his hand over your mouth, prompting you to bite it. “ya!”
“well, i’m waiting, lovey,” you practically sang.
Tumblr media
“why are you soaking wet, hao?” minghao’s older sister asks as soon as hao and min entered the house "did you forget to bring an umbrella? today of all days? is minnie okay?"
hao sighs at the instantaneous nagging of his older sister. "min's fine. she didn't get wet, don't worry about it." xiaomin makes a run towards her mom, giving her a giant hug as soon as her shoes were off.
"okay," his sister sighs and hugs her daughter back, kissing the top of her head, before min runs to her playpen. "so why are you?"
"remember the girl i told you about before?" hao starts off, removing the soaked cardigan he was wearing. "the one from the heaven’s cloud café?"
"the one you practically bullied into accepting your umbrella because it was raining and she was just casually walking under the pouring rain?"
"yes..." hao frowned at his sister's overtly detailed description. "well, i met her again, jiejie. today. at minnie's school."
it took hao's sister a minute before she realized what minghao was implying. "you mean it was yn?!" a pleasant look of surprise takes over her face.
"that’s her name?" hao wonders out loud “you know, jiejie, minnie was surprisingly fond of her.”
“really?” hao’s sister almost looks relieved upon hearing hao say those words “she always had that charm, it’s no wonder that her students are enamoured by her.”
“you knew her?”
“yeah, university,” she smiles at hao.
“how come you’ve never mentioned her?” hao asks with a frown.
this piques her interest. “well, i haven’t talked to her in years since she moved away.” she says, watching her brother’s steady reaction “i only found out she’s back when word got out that min’s class were getting a sub. yn made sure to personally let the parents know about what’s going to happen.”
hao just hummed, taking all of the information in. hao’s sister uses this to her advantage. “you sure do ask a lot of questions about her.”
minghao scoffs at his sister’s implication. “i’m just making sure that minnie’s in good hands,” hao replies almost defensively.
“oh, she’s in great hands,” hao’s sister smirks “why, do you think yn’s pretty?”
“stop trying to play matchmaker, jiejie!” hao throws a pillow at his sister “it’s rubbing off on minnie!”
hao’s sister laughs “what do you mean?! i did not teach my daughter that!”
“well, she must have seen it somewhere! she asked me the if i thought ‘miss ln was pretty,’” hao pointed out, frustrated.
“uncle haoi?” minnie calls from the backseat.
“yes, honey?” he looks at the rearview mirror to check on his niece.
“do you think miss ln is pretty?” min asked innocently, making hao choke on his own spit.
“well,” hao’s sister grins “what did you say?”
hao’s silence and the fact that his face was turning red was enough of an answer for his jiejie.
Tumblr media
“aw, lovey, you had a crush on me from the start?” you beamed at him, adjusting your position from the couch. you were still practically glued to his side, tucked under his arms, but now you were just looking at him— chin resting on his chest.
hao playfully scoffed at your implication “baby, i think it was the other way around.” his answer prompts you to smack his chest lightly. “i was always wondering why you kept taking my umbrellas.”
you gasped, appalled. “you wish, xu minghao!”
“i did,” hao smiles at you. “you know whenever it rained, i always wished that for some reason you would forget your umbrella— which i knew you would, i’ve come to learn that after the first 2 weeks of dating you.”
“i have like four umbrellas from you,” you muttered shyly. hao laughs at your timid confession, softly caressing your cheeks.
“i know, i kept buying new ones,” he replied with a soft smile. “and since i knew you were eventually going to forget to bring one with you, i started offering you a drive home.”
“aha! so that was your tactic of wooing me then,” you squinted your eyes at him.
“uh, no?!” hao was almost offended, making you laugh. “it was the lilies, remember?”
Tumblr media
“uncle haoi,” min calls for her uncle’s name excitedly “look what i’m giving miss ln!”
hao looks back at the driver’s seat to find min waving a pink ‘happy birthday’ card. he smiles at his niece’s sweet gesture.
ever since hao’s jiejie started working back in the office, he’s been frequently dropping off and picking up his niece. his work schedule conveniently fits min’s school schedule so this means more encounters with yn.
it’s funny, hao thinks. he’s somehow formed an indescribable bond with you. the fifth time that hao was actively aware that you forgot your umbrella (again), he insisted that he can drive you home.
“what kind of teacher am i if my students knew that i willingly went inside a stranger’s car?!” you argued.
“the kind of teacher that accepts help from those who are willing to give it,” hao argues back. this was your what— fifth meeting? it was refreshing for hao to see this side of you. “and i’m not a stranger! you know my jiejie.”
“yes, but i don’t know you,” you crossed your arms, childishly.
this makes hao crack a smile. this was the first time you saw hao smile— or rather, the first time hao smiled because of you.
“xu minghao,” hao extends his hand “you can call me haohao.”
hao checks the time on his car’s dashboard, it was still quite early since they beat the morning traffic. “should we buy flowers to go with that card, minnie?” he asks his niece who nodded excitedly.
Tumblr media
“okay, why did you get me lilies though?” you asked him.
“heaven’s cloud café,” hao answered simply. “you were carrying a bouquet of white lilies.”
“and you presumed i just liked them?” you were teasing, of course. you liked white lilies. after receiving the bouquet of white lilies from hao for the first time, you’ve come to love them. you even kept some of the dried lilies on a frame— something to remember by.
“well, i made sure that i asked the right source.”
“still don’t know how you’ve managed to know him.” you grumbled “i feel betrayed.”
“i keep telling you that i met them during our university days!” hao laughs.
“how come he’s never mentioned you?!”
“jun never mentioned you either!”
Tumblr media
“what about that one,” you asked jun, pointing at the red velvet cake “oh no, but that bear-shaped tiramisu looks adorable.” you pouted as you continued to browse the dessert section of the café.
“yn, seriously, just pick one,” jun groans as he watched you struggle. “wonwoo’s going to bite our head off.”
“i heard that,” a deep voice appears behind you two.
“i heard that” you mocked your friend, earning a smack in the head from wonu. “ya! i’m telling!”
jun laughs at you two. you, jun, and wonu grew up together. for three people who spent most of their lives intertwined, it’s amazing how you three are not still sick of each other.
you three even made a pact to have a mandatory weekly meeting. if one person can’t make it, they have to pay for the next meeting. since you’re all stingy, you three have done your own ways of going through hell and back just so you couldn’t miss a meeting.
“just pick the red velvet, ynnie,” jun says without even looking up at you, totally engrossed on his phone. “ynnie, you still like lilies, right?”
“yeah…” you said, watching jun type furiously on his phone. “who are you texting?”
“no one,” jun says not-so-innocently. “so what are we doing today aside from giving our hard-earned money towards cheol & han?” jun’s sentiment makes you three laugh.
“you know i keep hearing good reviews from this place from my co-workers,” you said as you eyed the chocolate cake.
“seriously! have these two never heard of a friends and family discount?” jun wails even more, obviously not done.
“what’s all this yapping about?” someone emerges from the backroom, carrying a fresh case of cupcakes.
“jeonghannie!” jun greets him with a smile. “if we buy three slices of cakes, do we get the next one free?”
“no, you get it for an additional 20% of the price,” jeonghan says making you laugh. jeonghan spots you— a new, yet oddly, familiar face. “you must be yn!”
“hi hi, yes!” you smiled at him. you’ve only heard jeonghan through stories from your friends— wonu and junnie. as a matter of fact, you’ve yet to meet their gigantic friend group. “i’ve heard lovely things about your place!”
jeonghan smiles, pleased. “and because of that your entire order will be on the house today!” he beams, before he turns to wonu and jun “you two have to pay full price.”
“that’s not fair, we’ve been friends for years!” jun whines, making jeonghan laugh.
“oh, it’s fine, i’ll be happy to pay— no worries!” you say with a kind smile.
“okay, fine all of your orders are on the house,” jeonghan rolls his eyes playfully. “only because you’re sweet and hao just can’t get enough of you.”
you were about to say something when jun places his hand over your mouth. “thank you so much jeonghannie! i’ll make sure to put in a good word to my co-workers!” jun says in one breath, pushing you towards one of the empty booths.
“junnie,” you eyed him warily “what was jeonghan talking about?” you asked with your arms crossed.
“well, it’s a long story actually…” jun trailed off, scratching the back of his head.
“how does he know about minghao?”
jun was about to answer when wonu interrupts him as soon as he finished ordering for the rest of you. “we’re all friends, yn,” wonu starts off “it’s quite impossible for our circles not to cross.”
“okay, but that doesn’t explain what’s going on,” you said, confused. “and how come i’ve never heard of hao when i know literally everyone else.”
“yes, you do!” jun counters “it’s just sometimes we’re used to calling him his korean name.”
“he’s myungho?” you were flabbergasted, somehow the dots never aligned. “god, that man has so many names,” you muttered to yourself “then how—“
“university days,” wonu answers for you “you went to a different school, you even met hao’s sister.”
“you even moved out of town,” jun added, practically resting their case. besides, it’s not like you always kept tabs on who their friends were. however, the latter part of jeonghan’s sentence got you intrigued.
“okay…” you were unconvinced “but what about the other thing that jeonghan said?”
this makes jun smirk, using it to his advantage. “about what you being sweet?” jun asks innocently, making wonwoo laugh.
“wen junhui!” you smacked his arm playfully “i’m being serious here!”
“i’m serious too! i’m not too sure about you being sweet though,” jun says teasingly, making you roll your eyes at him “hao, however…”
wonu watches your reaction, he noticed your attention perked up— eyes practically dancing in anticipation. “aw, our little yn has a crush,” wonu says with a teasing smile.
“psh, me? having a crush? what am i, 5?” you were getting defensive, which means they were correct with their assumptions.
Tumblr media
“aha, so you did have a crush on me!” hao exclaimed, pulling you closer to him— as if you could get any closer.
“yes,” you muttered through your teeth “however, you liked me first! you kept bringing me coffee every time you dropped off min at school.”
hao didn’t want to argue so he nodded, smiling softly at you. “yeah, i sure did.” his comment makes you melt into a puddle. one year of dating and he still manages to make your heart burst. “and i think if i had the chance to do it again, i wouldn’t change a thing.”
“you’d still give me your umbrella?”
“i’d still give you my umbrella,” hao murmurs before giving you a kiss on the lips.

if there's one thing people should know about you— it's that to never call you if there's an emergency. you’ve always gotten shit on for having your phone on do not disturb.
“what if you got stabbed?!” seungkwan dramatically yelled behind you, making you roll your eyes.
“well, did i?” you asked stopping dead in your tracks to face him, crossing your arms.
“no,” seungkwan answered “but what if you were?!” oh this is never going to end.
“i already told you i was going out for air.” you replied, turning your back against him and kept on walking. somehow, the walk back to your accommodation seemed like it went on forever. “if you knew me better, you should know to never call me.”
“i tried texting and you still didn’t answer!”seungkwan was getting frustrated. “seriously, what’s the point of having a phone if no one can contact you!”
“seungkwan, this conversation is going nowhere.”
“it’s because you’re too stubborn!” seungkwan pointed out. “see? you’re not even listening to me!”
“my ears are starting to bleed, seungkwan,” now you were getting annoyed. it’s always like this with you two— you and seungkwan bicker like there’s no tomorrow, driving each other mad. yet, you two can’t keep away from each other.
you quickened your pace, not in the mood to argue. you knew you were at fault.
“you know i was worried, love.” fuck. of course, seungkwan would drop that pet name. he knew how to get you— annoying and cheesy as it may sound— and it was enough to make you stop walking. “i didn’t mean to upset you.”
“i’m sorry,” you sighed. “i was being a brat—”
“yeah, you were.” seungkwan agreed, not even let you finish. you let out an appalled huff, crossing your arms.
seungkwan laughed, reaching out to uncross your arms and pulling you closer to him. “you know you’re lucky you’re cute or else this behaviour will never work on me.”
“whatever,” you mumbled. “it’s because you love me.” you were practically chewing your words. it was times like these when you often question if you two are destined for something more. two childhood friends on a weekend vacation— alone. doing couple activities. acting like one. it really makes you wonder.
“yeah,” seungkwan hummed softly, wrapping an arm around your shoulder. “i know.”
Tumblr media
seungkwan went off on a long rant about wanting to spend the weekend with you out of town. mind you, he proposed this plan over the phone at 1 am on a random tuesday. he even scolded you for not picking up sooner.
“why didn’t you pick up the first time?”
“kwannie, you better be dying if you dared to call me at 1 am.” you grumbled.
“i love you, but i’m calling anyone but you if i were dying.” he said on the other line.
“okay, well it’s good to know you’re still alive. i’m hanging up.” you said with your eyes closed, ready to fall back to sleep.
“do you have plans next weekend?”
it was your birthday next weekend. not that it was a big deal, but you didn’t really like celebrating your birthday. seungkwan knew that— at least you hoped he did. “no,” you said quietly.
“do you want to go out of town?”
you agreed, not thinking much about it as it’s been a while since you went on a trip— let alone, with seungkwan. plus, it’ll be nice to actually have fun.
it raised some eyebrows, for sure, especially from mingyu.
“you’re actually going?” mingyu asked while he was busy chopping up some onions. he was preparing dinner for jun and wonu— who crashed his dorm. you and chan found out and decided to crash there as well.
“and why not?” you raised an eyebrow at mingyu, crossing your arms. it’s not like this is the first you and seungkwan have gone on a trip by yourselves.
“because,” mingyu avoided your gaze. he knew something and since it’s you we’re talking about, he would rather be eaten alive than admit whatever he’s thinking to you. “it’s weird.”
“why would it be weird?” you asked with furrowed brows. “it’s seungkwannie.”
“exactly.” mingyu exclaimed, proceeding to turn around and look for something in the cupboards.
“yah!” something clicked in your head. “do you know something that i don’t?”
“i’m not going to tell you until you admit it yourse— yah ynnie!” mingyu yelped from where he was standing after you pinched his ear. “fine, fine!”
“well, i’m waiting kim mingyu.” you crossed your arms in anticipation.
mingyu muttered a long string of curses— some of them about you being worse than his girlfriend, which only prompted you to pinch his arm. you liked his girlfriend.
“it’s just—“ mingyu was racking his brain for the right words to say. “does it ever bother you that kwan is doing all of this just for you?”
“what do you mean?” now, you’re genuinely confused. gyu’s never the type to instigate things like these. “he’s always been like that, gyu.”
gyu hummed— pursing his lips into a thin line. “you know what? you’re right, ynnie.” mingyu proceeded to cook dinner for all of you, choosing to move on from the topic. “let’s drop it.”
this only piqued your curiosity. there’s no way kim mingyu can just drop it. “no, you have to tell me, gyu.”
“tell you what?” chan pranced inside the kitchen, carrying the empty glasses and putting them in the sink.
“i don’t even know, ichan.” you sighed. “because mingyu won’t tell me.”
“i’m probably assuming things,” mingyu said dismissively, not eager to expand on the topic any further.
chan stared at you two with furrowed brows. obviously, this is confusing for him as there’s not even enough context to build up on. “uhh?”
“mingyu’s being weird,” you sighed “he’s suspicious of kwan’s actions, as if kwan has been nothing but sweet our entire lives.”
“seungkwan? sweet?” ichan laughed at your, what he assumed, incredulous take.
“see?!” mingyu pointed out animatedly, making you scoff at him.
“ynnie, i think what mingyu’s trying to say is that—“ chan paused, looking for the right words to break his thoughts in.
mingyu, loosing a mental battle between speaking about it or not, chooses to interrupt chan’s thoughts. “he likes you, yn.”
“uh—“ you felt frozen in your place. you were waiting for them to explain further, anything that can clear this up. “like as friends right?”
mingyu let out an obnoxious laugh that prompted you to throw a piece of crumpled up kitchen towel at him.
“why are you being so loud?” jun asks as he and wonwoo prances inside the kitchen, both confused by mingyu’s outburst.
“hyung,” chan turns to jun “what do you think about yn and kwan?”
jun furrowed his brows, confused. “what do you mean?”
“like about yn and seungkwan being—“ mingyu tried to explain but wonu cut him off.
“together?” wonu continued, his tone unsure. mingyu and chan nodded. “are you not?” wonu then turns to you, confused.
“what do you mean?!” you could feel your cheeks burning at wonwoo’s implication. “of course not! what led you guys to that idea?”
“oh you want to do this now?” mingyu asks tauntingly. “because i will do it.”
“shut up, mingyu,” you grumbled, obviously flustered.
“you have to excuse mingyu,” jun walks closer to you, giving you a side-hug. “he had a tiny fight with his girlfriend earlier that’s why he’s being an asshole.”
“eh, don’t care about him,” you said loud enough for mingyu to hear and yell ‘hey!’ with a pout. “what about you junnie?”
“personally?” you nodded “i think some people say that they’re friends to justify the actions that prove they’re more than just that.”
you were about to reply when your phone buzzed from the kitchen counter. eyes automatically wandered to your phone, with seungkwan’s contact name filling the phone.
“he calls you love?” chan asks as he read the text that seungkwan sent you, fondness in chan’s tone. no one was really surprised that it has gotten to the point that seungkwan calls you adorable pet names but for some reason this one did. “how have i never heard him call you that, yn?”
“oh, uh,” you let out a strained, embarrassed laugh “he only calls me that when we’re alone.”
“cute,” wonu smiles, making you even more flustered.
you attempted to dodge the situation by texting seungkwan back, saying that he can crash gyu’s dorm too. “can you save him a plate, gyu? seungkwan’s dropping by in a bit.” you said in a small voice. as soon as the words left your mouth, you realized that whatever you just said will not help your situation at all.
“this is why people assume there’s something more going on with you two,” jun laughs.
Tumblr media
“if you believe it, sure,” seungkwan says on the other line. he texted you asking if you were awake a couple of days before your supposed trip. you always had your phone on do not disturb as soon as the clock strikes midnight.
seungkwan, the loving menace that he is, kept pressing the notify anyway button on your thread. hence, the random video call at midnight.
this has been a frequent occurrence in your life. seungkwan has been clingier lately. although he’s always been close to you, kwan’s demeanour around you has changed.
“mhm,” all you could do was hum in response. at this point, you forgot what you were even arguing about. it was probably something petty like not knowing a pop culture reference.
“mhm?! ynnie are you sleeping already?” seungkwan asks on the other end of the call, looking over at your dark screen. he could barely see you in the frame— in fact, he’s firm that you’re not even in the screen at all. all he could see was the bedroom window from your dorm— bright lights from the neighbouring building illuminating the screen.
“hmm?” your eyes were getting droopy. you don’t even remember what happened the rest of the call, assuming that you probably fell asleep while mumbling sweet nothings to kwan.
seungkwan chuckled when the line went quiet and he heard your soft snores. it has always been like this. he would call you before bed and you would often fall asleep during your calls. if anybody asked him, it was his favourite part of his day.
“good night, my love.” he says softly, about to end the call.
“love you,” you mumbled in your sleep, surprising seungkwan. he wasn’t sure if you saying that deep in your sleep means something but that didn’t stop him from having a huge smile on his face.
“love you too, my ynnie.” he whispers, ending the call.
Tumblr media
you, jun, and seokmin met up at heaven’s cloud coffee roasters one thursday evening. “ynnie?”
“hm?”
“i texted you last night, you didn’t see?” seokmin asked with a pout.
you shook your head, ashamed. you probably opened the text when you were half-awake and forgot about it completely.
“oh, you know how she would always have her phone on do not disturb,” jun vouched for you, in which you offered him an apologetic smile. “she probably opened it and forgot about it.”
you checked your inbox to see seokmin’s message. you checked the time stamp and saw that he texted you while you were on a call with seungkwan— you two were hosting a netflix party, watching the glory together. “i’m sorry, seok,” you pouted.
“ah, it’s alright.” seokmin smiles at you, pinching your cheeks. he was asking if you had plans this weekend— which is your birthday weekend and your weekend trip with seungkwan. “so, do you have plans this weekend?”
“oh, um, seungkwan and i are going out—“
“you and seungkwan are dating?!” seokmin yells, almost making you spit out your drink.
“seokmin, no!” you practically pleaded, a look of embarrassment present on your face. “what i meant was seungkwan and i made plans this weekend— we’re going on a trip.”
“oh— oh,” there’s a knowing glint in seok’s face, a teasing smirk that already painted a thousand scenarios running through his head. “okay, okay. no worries.”
jun was holding back a laugh. he could sense the frustration emitting off you but he could also see where seokmin’s conclusions were drawn from.
“seok, it’s not what you think—“ you sighed, pinching the bridge of your nose.
and as if the universe is playing a cruel joke on you, seungkwan arrives at the café with a huge smile on his face upon seeing you three. as soon as kwan’s eyes met yours, his smile softens a bit more. this didn’t go unnoticed by seokmin.
“it’s okay, ynnie,” seokmin smiles at you genuinely. “what you and kwan have is the purest form of love.”
Tumblr media
“you’ve been awfully quiet, yn,” seungkwan comments as he glances at you from the driver’s seat.
“just couldn’t sleep last night, kwannie,” you mumbled, looking out the window to avoid eye contact.
“you can take a nap, we’re still an hour away from our destination,” he said looking at the estimated arrival time from the navigation system.
“it’s fine,” you said quietly “don’t worry about me.”
seungkwan hummed, unconvinced but chose to drop it. it was a 3-day weekend and seungkwan cannot afford to spend the entire trip full of arguments.
the truth is, ever since seokmin unleashed that line about you, kwan, and love— you began to overthink it.
it’s not like the whole thing is foreign to you, but since other people are pointing it out so blatantly— it did stir up questions that you were beginning to be confused with. hence, sleepless nights.
“yn,” seungkwan calls your name, one hand in the steering wheel while the other hand reaches for yours, intertwining his fingers against yours. “are you sure you’re okay?”
this did not help your situation at all. seungkwan would do this all the time, but now, it’s like your insides are causing a stir.
“mhm,” was all you’ve managed to say. you felt your heart practically leaping out of your chest.
he was determined to hold back with picking petty fights with you this weekend. and seungkwan knew not to pry, so he rubbed small motions on the back your hand— hoping to ease out whatever’s bugging you.
you tried to hide the deep breath you took when seungkwan used his endearing charm to ease your nerves. with your free hand, you sent a quick text to seokmin, something along the lines of feeling overwhelmed and yet warm and but also intoxicated and boo seungkwan.
will you ever survive this trip?
Tumblr media
the answer was no, you can’t survive this trip. upon arriving to your accommodation, you went straight to your room— making up some lame excuse that you’re tired.
seungkwan has been exceptionally patient about the whole thing, which surprised you. not that it was news, but he has already gone out of his way to be exceptionally understanding even if you think that you’re being rude most of the time.
so here you were, cooped up in one of the rooms of your air bnb, acting like a 13 year-old hiding from their middle-school crush.
“this is ridiculous,” you muttered to yourself as you stared at the empty ceiling.
you were lying on your bed, listening to soft tunes with your eyes closed, when you heard a soft knock on your door. “ynnie, i’m coming in,” you heard seungkwan say on the other side of the door.
he found you lying down on your back, completely straight. you didn’t even look at him nor bothered to open your eyes. your position was so rigid, it made seungkwan burst out of laughter.
you heard a shutter click before opening your eyes and turning to look at him, kwan was smiling so wide with his phone out.
“ya,” you glared at his smiling figure “what are you doing?”
“you look like vernon,” seungkwan laughed and sat beside you to show the picture he just took. your sleeping position was… questionable. you look dead.
“seungkwannie,” you whined as you sat up straight and tried to snatch seungkwan’s phone to delete the photo. seungkwan’s reflexes, however, were unmatched compared to yours. he was quick to shove the phone far from you.
“what?” seungkwan was laughing at your childish antics.
pouting, you placed your chin on his shoulder. “delete it.”
seungkwan turned his head to face you, his face mere inches away from yours. his eyes briefly flickered to your lips, almost taunting him.
you caught a glimpse of seungkwan’s gaze— you knew he looked at your lips, which only confused you even more.
snapping back to reality, you cleared your throat and moved far from seungkwan. he was briefly startled but regained his composure once he saw you stand up.
“are you feeling okay now?” he asked. you nodded timidly. you were not.
seungkwan’s patience was testing its new bounds. he has never been this patient around anyone.
time seemed to be passing by quickly. day 1 of your 3 day weekend was almost coming to an end. you and seungkwan spent the day walking around the town, basically doing whatever you want— café hopping, book shopping, eating, and pottery painting.
name it, seungkwan made it happen— which only made you overthink even more. what’s the real deal between you and kwan?
that’s why when day 2 rolled around, you were now actively avoiding him and this didn’t go by unnoticed by kwan.
by the time it got dark and you weren’t back from your walk, not answering his texts and calls, his patience had come to an end.
you had your phone on do not disturb the entire time you went for fresh air alone. this only made seungkwan worry even more. you were walking around an unfamiliar town, alone.
so now here we are, seungkwan telling you off for not replying to his texts and not answering his calls.
"what if you got stabbed?!" seungkwan dramatically yelled behind you, making you roll your eyes.
"well, did i?" you asked stopping dead in your tracks to face him, crossing your arms. this is you, trying to act like seungkwan's unwavering care for you did not affect you and totally cleared things off for you.
"no," seungkwan answered "but what if you were?!"
"i already told you i was going out for air" you replied, turning your back against him and kept on walking. somehow, the walk back to your accommodation seemed like it went on forever. "if you knew me better, you should know to never call me."
"i tried texting and you still didn't answer!" seungkwan was getting frustrated. his patience for you could only last for so long. it didn't also help the fact that you were avoiding him all day. "seriously, what's the point of having a phone if no one can contact you!"
"seungkwan, this conversation is going nowhere."
"it's because you're too stubborn!" seungkwan pointed out. "see? you're not even listening to me!"
"my ears are starting to bleed, seungkwan," now you were getting annoyed. now this, this is what's relatively normal in your relationship. it's always like this with you two - you and seungkwan bicker like there's no tomorrow, driving each other mad.
you quickened your pace, not in the mood to argue. you knew you were at fault.
“yeah, i know” seungkwan hummed softly, wrapping an arm around your shoulder. “now, c'mon. i've got a surprise waiting for you back in our place.”
Tumblr media
“i’m sorry, ynnie,” chan said while giving you an apologetic smile, wiping the tears falling down your face “we know you don’t like making a big fuss about your birthdays.”
“but we can’t help it!” seok whined giving you the tightest hug, making you laugh in between tears “how are we not supposed to celebrate your special day?”
turns out, the surprise that seungkwan was talking about was the rest of the guys— who travelled all the way here to surprise you for your birthday.
“oh our sweet, little yn” jun coos as he gives you his present and a hug. they were having a field day with the amount of presents that they kept giving you. apparently, it was hard to choose one specific gift so they got you everything you ever wanted.
it’s taking every bit of you to stop yourself from saying that you’ve already had everything you can only dream of.
once the guys found themselves having their own little world— eating takeout and drinking — seungkwan pulls you aside, asking for you two to have a bit of an alone time with each other.
you both sat on the front porch steps, no space between each other, taking in the quietness of this town with the blanket of stars hovered above you.
“how are you doing, love?” seungkwan asks as he takes your hand, interlacing his fingers against yours.
if this was any other day, you would be overwhelmed by how touchy seungkwan was being. however, given the surprise intimate party that was thrown, you were more than relieved to hold his hand since you’ve always found comfort in seungkwan anyway.
“bit overwhelmed,” you laughed “ but thankful. knowing that you all made an effort to do this means a lot.”
your birthdays have always been a sensitive subject. not that there was trauma associated with it, but your family had never made it a big deal. hence, you carried that ever since.
“i know you don’t like celebrating your birthdays,” seungkwan said “but i don’t think i can just let the day pass knowing that you, being here and coming in to my life, had been the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me.”
“kwan—“
“and please don’t get mad at them, i just wanted to make today extra special.” seungkwan practically pleads.
“i’m not mad, kwan” you said softly, squeezing his hand slightly to let him know that you’re serious. seungkwan sighs in relief.
silence fell as you two sat there underneath the stars, fingers intertwined. you took this moment to pursue the question that’s been bothering you the past few days. granted, it might make things a bit awkward but birthdays are about milestones, right? maybe being courageous is something that you want to embody as you celebrate being a year older.
“kwan?”
“yes, love?”
“why did you do all of this?” you asked.
“because it’s your birthday,” seungkwan laughs softly, as if you thought that all his efforts stems from something else. “and because you deserve everything good in this world, yn.”
“okay,” you hummed, not entirely convinced by his answer. so you’ve decided to step it up a notch. “do you like me, seungkwan?”
seungkwan was caught off-guard. who wouldn’t be?! the words slipped off your tongue so easily that he stared at you for a minute, looking for any tells that may indicate that you’re fucking around. but you weren’t. seungkwan saw that you were genuinely curious.
“of course, i like you, yn,” seungkwan answers “i mean i know i tease you a lot but that’s why we’re friends, right?”
friends, of course. “ah, right.” you replied, trying your best to show that you’re not forcing a smile. maybe you really were just overthinking things— boo seungkwan does not like you in that way.
seungkwan, however, noticed the change in your demeanour. he also noticed how you were trying to loosen your hand against his. “you don’t seem satisfied,” seungkwan points out lowly.
“hm?”
“were you expecting a different answer, yn?” he asks.
“nope.” you replied, staring directly at the empty streets and avoiding eye contact.
“are you sure?”
“yep.”
“then look at me, yn,” seungkwan says, prompting you to look at him.
he was fighting back a smile which annoyed you for some reason. “what is it, seungkwan?”
“do you like me, yn?” he asks, eyes sparkling as if to tease you even more.
the thing is, seungkwan already likes you. yes, more than a friend. yes, in that kind of way. however, he knew your stance on that whole friends to lovers trope.
you were wondering about mingyu and his girlfriend— how he knew that she was more than a friend. mingyu once answered, “i always knew.”
his answer didn’t help you, only made things confusing for you actually.
you once run by it through kwan, he was caught off-guard, of course. “i don’t know actually,” he tells you.
“right?!” you were surprisingly giddy. seungkwan has never seen this look on you when it came to this topic.
“i believe it’s all happenstance. i think people come into your life to serve a purpose. they can be your ray of your sunshine that easily brightens up your life…” you rambled off “or they can be your hope, you know, something that can easily be your driving force to tackle life or teach you have hope.”
“or they can just simply come into your life to teach you love and how to love.” seungkwan tells you.
you smile at his answer. when you two are not playfully bickering, he can be the sweetest person that you know. “so which is it?”
“i’ll let you know if ever find out,” seungkwan replies with a smile. he already knew the answer, he’s just waiting for you to figure out the answer yourself.
birthdays are about milestones right? courage. this year you’re going to learn about courage.
taking a deep breath, you answered “yes.”
“i’m sorry, what?” kwan practically chokes on his spit.
“boo seungkwan, i like you.”
“really?” he grins. “so which is it?” this time he leans in, his face inches away from you.
“what do you mean?” you asked quietly, the proximity of your faces was starting to drive you nuts.
“did you finally figure out how you knew i meant more as a friend to you?” closer. he kept leaning in closer.
as soon as he asked the question, he pursed his lips together, prompting you to look at it.
“mhm.” you hummed. when did his lips get so red? has it always been this red?
“and?” he smiles, tucking a stray piece of hair behind your ear.
“phone calls,” you whispered, your lips mere inches away from his. “i don’t mind answering your phone despite putting it on do not disturb.”
“i knew it,” seungkwan whispers back, lips touching lightly touching against yours. “because i’ve liked you before then.”
you pulled back a bit, “i thought you only liked me as a friend?”
“when did i say that?”
“uh, minutes ago?” you replied with a raised brow “are you trying to gaslight me?”
“no,” seungkwan laughed “but i was trying to wait and see if you were ever going to profess your undying love for me.”
you scoffed at his answer, making him laugh even more. he then cups your face gently, leaning in closely. you were back to where you two used to be— lips slightly touching each other.
“kwan?”
“hm?”
“are you going to kiss me?”
“i’ve always wanted to,” kwan says before pressing his lips against yours. “and now i don’t think i can stop myself from doing so,” he says as he pulls away briefly, but kisses you back again.
everything felt so light when it happened. his lips were soft, the way he cupped your face— gentle. it’s as if everything clicked, everything felt right.
boo seungkwan felt right.

"hi joshy, you okay?" you called from the other line. you had the phone pressed between your ear and your shoulder as you tried to sort out the papers that you still need to annotate.
you received a text from joshua asking if you were awake while you were trying to write your research paper. knowing that he probably just finished rehearsals, you’ve decided to call your boyfriend instead.
“what happened to baby?” joshua asked from the other line.
“what do you mean?” you asked, confused.
“i’m just joshy now to you?” you could feel the pout forming in his lips, making you roll your eyes and laugh at how childish your boyfriend is being.
“i fucking hate you,” you laughed as you took a hold of your phone, choosing to leave the papers for next morning.
“first it was joshy, now you hate me?” joshua whined jokingly “are you trying to break up with me?”
“did you just get back from practice?” you asked, choosing to drop whatever this banter you’ve managed to create.
“yeah,” joshua hummed softly. “they made us stay for an extra hour than they usually do, since the comeback date is almost in sight.”
“have you eaten yet?” you asked, already on your way to the kitchen to pack left over kimchi stew that your mom made while she was in your apartment earlier. maybe your mom knew you were going to give some to the boys— either way, you’re still thankful.
“no, but i’ll probably just sleep it off.” he mumbled from the other line. “‘m too tired to cook.”
“ya!” you yelled from the other line. “i’m already on my way to bring you food. just stay put!” the persistence in your tone was evident.
you were rushing to put everything in a tote bag so you can be on your way. you didn’t even bother to change out from your pyjamas and decided to just throw on a jacket instead.
“it’s already late, angel.” joshua laughed at how insistent you were. he knew early on that there’s no way of stopping you. “and what about your paper?”
“i’ll drive, don’t worry! i’ll be there in 15.” you said, already on your way to your car. “besides, i’m not in the mood to write it anymore, i’ll deal with it tomorrow.”
“angel, you have to be careful, okay?” you heard joshua say. “you’re not actually the best driver.” he was joking. kinda.
“at night,” you added but all you heard was an unconvinced hum from your boyfriend. “shuji!” you gasped.
“okay, drive carefully, angel! can’t use your phone while driving!” joshua stated, urging you to end the call before you can even respond.
you’ve learned to be careful around joshua—seeing that dating someone with a huge following will never be easy. so at times when he would need a pick me up, you’re willing to drop everything for him. much like what he does for you.
but you’ve learned to live with it, cope with it, and accept it. because you could never ask for someone better than your joshuji.
you sent a quick text to joshua, saying you’ve arrived. as soon as you reached his floor, he was already waiting in the hall for you— arms spread out, waiting for you to tackle him into a hug.
and you do. you’ll always give him the biggest hug— even if you’re carrying a heavy tote bag with a large container of stew. “i’ve missed you, shuji.” you sighed as your buried your face on the crook of his neck.
“where’s yn? i was promised food.” seungcheol peers into the hallway, popping out of nowhere. he saw the fairly large bag that you’re carrying and saw the stew inside. “kimchi jjigae! this is perfect!”
“you brat,” you squinted your eyes at him. “that’s for my boyfriend!”
“yn, there’s enough to feed more than 10 people here!” seungcheol groaned. “your boyfriend doesn’t even eat that much!”
“i packed that much because i knew if i only packed a small serving, joshua would still let the members have it even though he’s hungry.” you pointed out, giving joshua a side eye.
“it’s nice to know that you think of us when it comes to packing food,” cheol sarcastically said.
“okay, that’s enough,” joshua laughed. “let’s go inside, i’ll text the other members if they’re up for food.”
the dorm became lively again. the rest of the members came with glee in their eyes, even though they’re visibly tired. they welcomed you with warm hugs and overwhelming gratitude. it was times like these that you were grateful how far your friendship with them has taken you.
the members were gathered in the table, each having their own conversations. joshua was just watching them with a smile on his face, quietly observing them.
“okay, baby, you have to eat.” you said as you served him a bowl of stew a small portion of rice.
“you didn’t have to do any of this angel,” joshua said softly, looking up at you with kind eyes. he felt bad that you had to ditch writing your paper but he knew there was no way of stopping you from getting what you want.
“i know,” you said, caressing joshua’s face. “but i wanted to.” joshua looked up at you with a loving smile, leaning back as you stood behind his chair.
“i wish joshua gave me that look,” hoshi pouts before stuffing his mouth full of stew, making the group laugh.
joshua was still resting his head on your torso, eyes closed and definitely not eating.
“joshua hong, i practically ran over 2 red lights so i can bring you food. you have to eat.” you scolded him.
joshua groaned, not even bothering to do so. instead, he grabbed both your arms and wrapped them around him.
“ynnie, 2 red lights?” dk asked as if you’ve grown two heads “wah, i’m still surprised how you got your license.” dk joked making you stick your tongue out at him.
“hey, at least i’m not as bad as soonyoung!” you said in defence, pouting.
“yah! i’m not a bad driver!” hoshi argued.
“soonie, i saw how hard jihoon was holding on to the grab handles the one time i asked you to drive my car.”
joshua laughed at your counter argument, making you direct your attention back at him. “yah! do you want me to feed you, hong jisoo? i told you to eat and quit skipping your meals.”
“ooh, they’re mad now.” dino commented quietly “they called hyung by his korean name.” the group snickered, making you throw daggers at them.
“i don’t need to eat, angel,” joshua coos “just having you here by my side is enough to fill my appetite.”
joshua’s cheesy comment made the entire group groan in disgust, including you. he, on the other hand, found it hilarious. joshua knew how much they hate it when he spews out corny shit like that.
“i think i just lost my appetite,” seungkwan mumbled, dropping his utensils. a mutter of agreements passed around the table, urging them to clear the table faster.
in just a matter of a few minutes, you and joshua were left alone in the kitchen as the rest of the members gathered in the living room to give you two some space.
“i thought they’d never leave,” joshua sighed in content as he urged you to sit beside him, pulling your chair closer to him. “i missed you, angel.”
“did you have to make a cheesy comment like that?”
“if i didn’t, they will never leave us alone.” joshua pouts at your incredulous look. he knew you hated cheesy comments even before you two started dating. “the members love you a lot and i don’t have the energy to compete for your attention.”
joshua’s childish yet understandable comment makes you laugh. “joshua hong, when did you get so clingy?”
“why do you keep calling me by my full name?” joshua whined. “did i do something i wasn’t aware of? am i not worthy of being your baby?”
“no,” you laughed “but it’s adorable that you’re that serious over a pet name.”
“angel, we’ve been dating for over a year now. you know how serious i can be over things like these.” joshua pouts, making you pinch his cheeks.
“you’re cute,” you giggled.
“i know,” joshua gave you a toothy smile.
“now eat,” you deadpanned.

pairing: non-idol!joshua (svt) x gn!reader

word count: 1.5k
summary: a drunk and sulky joshua won't leave you alone until you tell him you love him back.
Tumblr media
“come get ur man pls” a text from seungkwan appeared on the top of your phone while you were scrolling absentmindedly on tiktok.
tonight was one of the rare nights that the boys had a relatively free weekend. it was the perfect chance for them to catch up and have a drink or two.
though you anticipated that the boys were going to get wasted, you didn’t expect joshua to be one of them.
joshua hong can usually hold his liquor well. joshua hong also knows when to stop drinking when he’s almost at his limit.
however, seungkwan’s unsolicited yet appreciated updates have disproven all things you thought you knew about joshua’s drinking habits.
“are you not having fun, jihoon?” you teased. it wasn’t long before jihoon decided to call you.
“i’m close to committing murder,” jihoon muttered from the other line “you have to come and help me here.”
“what about seungkwan?”
“he’s got his hands full from soonyoung alone,” jihoon stated. “please, i did not ask to babysit grown men.”
“you guys got this!” you wanted to laugh. “is josh—“
“he’s the worst one! i don’t even know what’s gotten into him, he’s so sulky all of a sudden” jihoon was frustrated “please, just come here and at least accompany joshua.”
“is that yn on the line?” you heard seungkwan from the other line “ynnie! please, if you truly love me, you’d come and save me from this misery.”
“you guys are not making a compelling case, you know.” you teased knowing well enough that jihoon and seungkwan were getting frustrated. “besides, i was quite firm that tonight is your night to bond as a group.”
“we’ve bonded for years! please,” seungkwan practically cried on the other line “oh god, soonyoung’s standing on the a table— hyung! get down from there!”
you can hear the chaos from their line and you feel bad that they had to endure all of this. “are you guys still at wonu’s?” you asked already putting your jacket on and grabbing your keys.
“yes! please hurry!”
by the time you got to the dorms, you were mentally preparing for the rowdiness that you could hear emitting from the other side of the door.
"ynnie!" soonyoung ran to the doors to greet you with a suffocating hug "are you finally here to confess your undying love for joshy?" he asked, sparkles practically dancing in his eyes.
"soonie, you're drunk." you tried to laugh it off, obviously flustered by the comment. "why don't you go see if wonu or vernon can grab you some water, yeah?"
soonyoung pouted but eventually obliged.
"yn!" seungkwan was practically in tears when he greeted you with a hug "i really thought you were going to let me fend off for myself."
"you know i actually thought about it," you teased. seungkwan, obviously who was not in the mood for fooling around, threw daggers at you. "now where's—"
"ynnie!" joshua’s entire face practically brightened when he saw you look for him. “oh wait, no, i forgot i’m mad.” he pouted as he crossed his arms.
you found joshua squished between jeonghan and mingyu in one of the couches. jun was sprawled all over the loveseat, clearly passed out, while minghao and chan sat on the floor. they all gave you kind smiles as you approached them closer.
“yn! come, sit beside me,” jeonghan offered with a lopsided smile. you can tell he was buzzed too.
“no, yn has to sit next to me!” joshua moped with a huff.
jeonghan put his arms in defeat. "i was suggesting that yn should sit in between us, but it's okay. yn can sit next to you and only you." he teased, prompting joshua to glare at him.
"i think i'll just stand" you stated awkwardly, grabbing the can of coke that jihoon politely offered. seungcheol, who was standing right next to you let out a teasing laugh. "what are you laughing at?" you raised an eyebrow at him.
"it's just cute how you and shua keep dancing around each other's feelings, obviously ignoring the fact that you two like each other," he grinned.
you elbowed him in the rib, making him groan and mumble a string of profanities.
"what? but it's true! i know we were drinking that day, but i will never forget the most lovesick giggle i heard from you when shua congratulated you over phone," cheol teased in a hushed tone. curse cheol's memory.
"choi seungcheol, speak another word and i will break your nose." you grumbled, which only made cheol laugh even more.
"what are you two whispering about?" hao asked you and cheol while he quietly observed joshua's change in demeanour, which didn't go unnoticed.
"oh, you know, how i love love," cheol said in a teasing tone. "and watching people i love fall in love," he sighed.
you rolled your eyes and took a sip of the coke, of hoping that cheol drops the topic soon. your eyes briefly scanned joshua's face though, he still had his arms crossed, pouting like there was no tomorrow.
minghao, who instantly picked up cheol's cryptic statement, couldn't help but laugh. mingyu, who was quietly sipping his beer, was fighting off a smile too. fuck, am i that obvious?
gyu cleared off his throat, "does anyone want more samgyupsal?" he asked, ready to head towards the kitchen.
"yeah, we can help." minghao said, grabbing chan by the arm, confused by everything. "c'mon chan, let's see what's in their fridge."
"you can take my seat, ynnie," mingyu grinned as he pinched your cheeks passing by, prompting you to slap his hand. "so cute, our shua and ynnie."
it wasn't long before the rest of the guys followed gyu to the kitchen, leaving you and joshua alone on the couch— as well as a sleeping jun.
this was definitely a sight for sore eyes. when joshua drinks, he can usually handle his alcohol quite well. he also doesn’t really get blackout drunk. so all this? a pouty, sulky, practically red, and wasted joshua was something you’ve never encountered.
"joshua," you nudged him softly "can you please tell me why you're mad?"
"i thought i was your joshuji?" he pointed out softly. he looked adorable and it was not doing your heart any good.
"okay, my joshuji," you laughed "can you tell me why you're mad?"
"it's because you didn't say it back," he huffed.
you were genuinely confused. "say what back?" you asked before taking a sip from your drink.
"i love you," the way he stated it so easily and with nonchalance made you choke on your coke. "see? you're not saying it back."
"shuji, when did you even say that?" you asked in between coughs.
"earlier," he mumbled before slouching lower so he can rest his head on your shoulder. "when seungkwan called you."
"ynnie! how am i just finding out that you're not going to be here?!" seungkwan yelled over the phone. you can hear the chaos from the other line and from what you can tell, they're playing a drinking game.
"because i figured you guys needed to bond without me looming and babysitting each one of you," you answered as you scanned through your cupboards, looking for something to eat.
"but i miss you!" seungkwan cried. "how am i supposed to endure all of this when— i just took a shot! why is it my turn again?"
"okay, seungkwan love shot!" you heard joshua yell gleefully.
"kwannie, was that joshua?" you asked laughing.
"yeah, your boyfriend has been way too comfortable passing shots around." seungkwan grumbled then paused "hold on, i think—"
"ynnieee," joshua drawled out your name "love youuu."
"shua, can you pass the phone to seungkwan please?" you asked chuckling.
"yes? did you change your mind?" seungkwan's tone was full of hope.
"no, but can you keep tabs on joshua? it seems like he's going to drink more than he normally does."
"you can do that yourself, you know." you could just feel kwannie rolling his eyes. "he's not my boyfriend."
"he's not mine either!"
"he might as well be!" seungkwan pointed out "you two have been acting way too affectionate for a pair of friends."
"just watch him for me," you sighed "please, kwannie?"
"fine."
ah. that phone call.
"i was actually telling seungkwan to watch over you but i guess he got his hands full," you said softly to joshua.
"why?"
"what do you mean why?"
"why did you ask seungkwan to do that?"
"because i care about you?" you answered, though you weren't really sure why joshua was asking you this.
"okay," joshua sighed, nearly content with your answer. nearly.
his hand found yours though and clasped his fingers against yours. it's not like this is all new to you. you were quite used to joshua being clingy, more so when drunk.
"yn?" you hummed. "i love you" he mumbled softly.
"yeah, me too."
"why aren't you saying it back properly?" he sulked. god, not this again.
"i love you too, shuji," you said softly and that was true.
"really?" joshua asked as if you weren't sure, making you laugh.
"yeah."
"okay, because i really love you," he sighed, fully content this time. "in this life and in our next one."
Tumblr media
hello! it's been a while since i wrote anything remotely related to fanfics! so, i hope this is still fine. hehe.

-
life hasn’t been extremely kind to you. first week in your new job and it has already made your life a living hell.
“i mean it’s only been a week,” you said over the phone, trying to appease yourself that maybe it’s just a bad day “maybe it’s just something that i need to get used to.”
you literally just clocked off work when joshua sent you a message, asking how your day was. always like an angel, always in perfect timing.
work was starting to get frustrating and you considered quitting too, but talking to joshua made it bearable for you.
he would send you messages in the morning, would try calling you during your lunch breaks. and if he has time, he would try to visit your place or he would ask you to come over to his.
and when you replied to his text with a sole sad smiley face, he immediately called you.
never in your life would you have expected for shua to be so patient when it came to you, even more so to the people he deeply cared about.
“i don’t know, love,” there are noises on the other side of his line “you’ve been having trouble sleeping.”
“is that yn? tell yn i miss her!” you can hear jeonghan yell on the other line, making you laugh.
“no, tell her yourself!” joshua whines childishly on the other line “it’s my time to be on the phone with her.”
“it’s always your time on the phone with her!” jeonghan whines back. there were a couple of indiscernible words before you heard the phone being passed. “yn!” jeonghan manages to steal the phone from joshua “i miss you! you don’t visit us anymore.”
“had a tough week, bub.” you say softly “i’ll make sure to visit when i have time.”
“how come joshua always gets to see you?” you could feel that han was pouting. “even when we have meetings that run late…” he mutters the latter part but you caught it loud and clear.
“he’s always checking up on me, han,” you whispered all of a sudden, feeling shy. “i actually don’t know how he does it.”
“i know how,” jeonghan says in a teasing manner before you heard the phone being snatched again.
“lovey,” joshua coos “do you want me to call you as soon as you get home?”
“you’ve been really fond of that nickname, huh,” you teased shua, but you could feel yourself turning red.
“only because we’re each other’s lovey,” he murmurs over the phone. “but do you?”
“it’s okay, lovey,” you said, fighting back a smile as you entered the busy subway. “i’m on the train now, i’ll talk to you later.”
“okay, text me when you get home,” joshua says on the other line. “love you.”
you hummed and said “love you too” softly before hanging up.
the train ride home was enough to make you feel numb— maybe it was the exhaustion or maybe it was a bustling friday night. whatever it was, it’s enough for you to forget about the resentment you felt from your job.
with your airpods in, you endured the ride home listening to the curated playlist that you and joshua curated.
you were aware of how your music taste differed from each other— so when home by one direction played, you were a little startled. it’s almost as if you accidentally added the song on the queue.
a small smile was practically tattooed on your face when you saw that it was joshua who added the song to the playlist.
you must’ve done something good in your past life because you can’t possibly think of a reason for you to have joshua hong in this life.
Tumblr media
“love you?” jeonghan teases joshua, making him roll his eyes. “what’s the deal with you and yn again?”
“we’re friends, han,” joshua says as he walks over to the other side of jeonghan’s place to grab his water bottle that he left on the kitchen counter.
jeonghan has been friends with joshua for years— he knows when joshua’s trying to avoid something.
“yeah, i know,” jeonghan says following joshua “i mean i’m friends with yn too, but i don’t text nor call her every day.”
“maybe because you just suck at using your phone,” joshua teased han, hoping that his friend would drop the conversation.
“says the guy that barely responds the group chat and has over 500 unread messages?” jeonghan shots back, amused at shua’s insinuation. “face it, shua, ynnie is—“
“she’s special,” shua finishes. “everything just feels lighter around her, you know.”
“ahuh,” jeonghan agrees in a low hum, watching joshua’s expression turn bright as he receives a text update from you. jeonghan knew what joshua felt about you, he’s just unsure if his friend knew it himself. “i know.”
Tumblr media
you and joshua have been friends for a little while now— and your friendship with him had stood the test of time. it seemed like it was too good to be true, because he came to your life when everything felt hazy.
you moved to a new place all by yourself, not knowing anyone, trying not to cry as you dropped a piece of kimbap on the convenience store floor— then comes joshua, who happens to be at the very same convenience store and saw how you stared at the piece of kimbap on the floor for a while.
that night at the convenience store, what you needed was a friend or kimbap.
joshua, who was supposed to only buy a quick snack, unconsciously chose to sit and eat at the convenience store instead.
he sat a few chairs away from you, eating his ramen quietly while he watched you pick clean up the mess you made.
after you finished cleaning up— and quietly cursing the universe as today wasn’t going well— you sat back down, fighting back the tears from your eyes and continued to eat your lukewarm ramen.
joshua heard your quiet sniffles while you were eating. he didn’t want to be invasive and ask you if you were okay, but he could sense that you were having a rough day.
joshua has always had a knack when it comes to people— he would always get a sense of what they’re feeling.
he quietly slides you the extra kimbap that he bought for later and says, “i accidentally bought an extra one and i’ll probably forget about it in my fridge if i take it home.” a lie, of course.
as soon as your gaze reaches his, you bursted out crying— which definitely caught shua by surprise.
not knowing exactly what to do, he sat next to you and carefully patted your back every now and then.
“sorry,” you said in between tears, letting out an embarrassed laugh. “i don’t know what came over me.”
“hey, it’s okay,” joshua says comfortingly “you’re okay.”
you hurriedly wiped your tears with your hands, however, it seemed that your tears aren’t quite done yet.
“oh god, this is so embarrassing,” you said, tilting your head back— fanning yourself as you tried to stop yourself from crying. “it’s just a really rough day.”
“it’s okay, you’re safe here,” he gives you a reassuring smile “sometimes, we just really need to let it all out for everything to start making sense again.”
that night at the convenience store, what you needed was a friend or kimbap— the universe gave you both.
Tumblr media
as soon as you got off the train station, a familiar physique was leaning against one of the pillars— arms crossed with a bright smile plastered on their face.
“what are you doing here?” you asked, surprised to see him at the station. “weren’t you supposed to be on a date?”
“we see each other at the office everyday,” he scoffed, easily grabbing your tote bag and casually puts on his shoulder. he’s so used to doing it, it’s feasible at this point. “and it’s just with jeonghan. he can live without me, so i left.”
“so, are you saying that i can’t live without you?” you raised an eyebrow at him and he laughs, almost pleased that of your insinuation.
“maybeee,” he practically sings. “c’mon, do you wanna get something to eat?”
“i thought you and jeonghan already ate?” you asked him, linking your arm with his.
“we had snacks,” joshua answers “what do you want to do, love? do you want to eat out or should we just get take out and eat at yours?”
“my place?!” you gasped “i thought we were going to your apartment this time?”
“you have a comfier couch,” joshua mumbles as he pulls away from your linked arms, quietly slipping his fingers in between yours instead. you can’t deny that physical touch brings you comfort— rather, joshua brings you comfort.
“then why did you get that ugly ass white couch then?”
“it’s cute and you know it,” joshua pouts “plus it works well with my living room interior.”
“babe, it’s solid as a rock.”
“so if we ever move in together, you’d force me to throw it out?!”
you practically choked on his statement. “move in?! who said anything about moving in?”
“i think it’s bound to happen anyway,” joshua says casually. “didn’t we make a pact when we were 23?”
“i thought that was just the alcohol talking,” you said quietly, feeling shy all of a sudden.
“i meant every word i said,” joshua smiles at you— the kind that makes your heart beat a little faster, the kind that makes your insides melt. “but i’m also more than happy to yield, if you’re retracting your statement.”
“if we’re 30, and have not found any significant others, should we just get married?” you asked shua after finishing your second bottle of soju.
“i thought you don’t believe in marriages,” shua teases, resting his chin on his dominant hand. his eyes were sparkling in anticipation.
“i don’t,” you smiled at him “but if it’s with you, what’s the worst thing that could happen?”
“okay,” joshua says softly “as long as you’re okay with it, then i’m happy to spend the rest of my life with you.”
you smiled upon hearing what joshua said. “yeah, you’re not getting rid of me that easily, joshua hong.”
“great because i’ve already pictured the perfect proposal.”
Tumblr media
you and joshua were quietly eating dinner back at your place— sitting on the living room floor, backs pressed against the couch, with modern family playing in the background.
shua was watching you the whole time as you ate your tteokbokki with a mindless look on your face. he knew that you were checked out and he felt bad that nothing could lift up your spirits.
you were painfully exhausted that you can’t even enjoy your comfort food with your comfort show.
you caught joshua staring at you as you nibbled rice cake slowly. “what?”
“do you want to talk about it?” he asks you softly.
“talk about what?” you feigned innocence. to be fair, you weren’t in the mood to talk about work and the last thing you want was to pester shua with your work rants too.
“c’mon, yn,” he pats the space between you two, urging you to sit closer to him. “you know you can tell me anything, right?”
“mhm,” you hummed as you placed your chopsticks down and snuggled closer to shua— your head resting on the crook of his neck. “i’m just tired,” you say quietly.
“i know, my love,” he whispers, knowing that you weren’t just physically tired. shua knew that your new job was taking everything from you and you didn’t want to make it seem like it is. “i wish there’s something that i can do to make you feel better.”
you lifted your head to turn towards shua. “you’re already doing great, bub,” you said with a fond smile. “having you here with me is enough,” you hummed.
joshua returned the smile, pulling you closer to him— if it was even possible. you two sat in silence, tucked under shua’s embrace.
you’ve always found comfort within joshua hong. when people ask you what he is in your life, you would smile and tell them that he’s your comfort person.
“so, like the love of your life?” ichan asks with a confused look, not really understanding your answer.
“sure, something like that.”
“are you two dating then?” he asks as you two wait for your work computer to finish updating.
“nope.”
“but he’s always at your beck and call?” he clarifies and you nodded. “god, you two are confusing.” chan mutters, leaning back at the office chair.
you laughed. “babe, you’re just saying that because you haven’t met the person who makes you feel comfortable.”
chan playfully scoffs at your comment and says “well, i’m sorry if i haven’t met my soulmate at a convenience store.”
soulmates. maybe joshua hong is your soulmate.
“shuji,” you called his name softly, resting your chin on top of his shoulder.
“hm?” joshua hums as it prompts him to turn his head and look at you— the distance between your faces were unbearably close. “you know i hate that nickname right?”
“i know,” you answered, not moving from your position. “but you still let me call you that.” your chin planted on his shoulder as you practically bit every word that came out of your mouth.
joshua laughs because you’re right. he hates it when people call him that and yet, he doesn’t mind when you do it.
joshua’s attention was back to the tv, watching the modern family episode when mitch and cam got married.
you removed yourself from joshua’s embrace—propping your elbow on the table and resting your head against your hand. you couldn’t help but watch joshua— having him here next you was nothing new but you still can’t believe that someone like him would be so patient around you.
there’s definitely a sense of selfishness that boils inside you. you want joshua to stay in your life forever, but that’s not possible. especially if he finds a significant other.
“yn,” shua calls your name softly, eyes still glued at the tv. “is my face really that great to look at?” he asked teasingly. you scoffed, playfully rolling your eyes. “because ahjumma gave me extra fishcakes because of that.”
“and i thank you because of that,” you grinned.
joshua turns to you, mirroring your position as he props his elbow on the table and rests his head against his hand as well.
“what’s bothering you, my lovey?” shua asks as he tucks a stray piece of hair behind your ear.
“do you love me?” you asked joshua. a bold move on your part— but you only did it because he can either spin it as something strictly platonic or it can become something more.
he wasn’t even caught off-guard. instead, he smiles at your question— as if it was just a normal and casual thing to ask. “i do,” joshua answers because it’s true. “i think i love you a little too much.”
“how much?”
“like i would let you run the ac on full blast,” joshua mutters with a smile on his face, playing with the ends of your hair.
you let out a small gasp, “really?”
“really.”
“but you hate getting cold,” you pointed out.
“yeah, but you love the cold— like right now, it’s freezing here,” joshua laughs as he pulls the sleeves of his hoodie further.
“shit, i didn’t even notice—“ you were about to stand up to turn down the ac but shua pulls you back down.
“it’s okay,” he says softly, “c’mere." joshua pulls you closer to him, similar to the position you were in earlier. this time though, you're sitting between his legs— your back against his chest, his arms wrapped around you.
“shua, let me turn the ac down,” you said, trying to get up but he tightens his arms around you— briefly forgetting how big shua’s arms has gotten.
“no,” he whines childishly “just stay here with me,” he mumbles in your ear. “you’re very warm.”
“i think that’s why i feel hot all the time,” you said nestling in his arms.
“yeah,” joshua chuckles “but i also think you’re a very warm person, ynnie.”
“hm?”
“yeah, i mean you make every room brighter, ynnie. you make everything feel as if you’re the calm in this chaotic world. if i could keep you by my side at all times, i’d do it.”
you rolled your eyes playfully “now, you’re just making fun of me.”
“i’m not,” joshua rests his chin on the top of your head “why do you think jeonghan and seungkwannie kept asking for you?”
“i think it’s because i feed them,” you joked, making joshua snort.
“trust me yn, if i can keep you all to myself, i would.”
“so why don’t you?”

Tumblr media
“i never asked you to stay,” wonwoo muttered as you helped him clean up after the info session that your work had conducted for a group of students.
“this is ridiculous,” you sighed more so to yourself “there’s no way you could’ve done this by yourself.” you said while you held the blue recycling bin, gathering all of the leftover flyers and other papers that had writing on them. you also had a separate bin for the coffee lids and cup sleeves to put in the recycling as well.
“you could’ve just left,” wonwoo was watching you the entire time, making a mental note that you were serious about putting away your trash. “i know seokmin is waiting for you in the lobby.”
“it’s okay.” you replied, not even bothering to look him in the eye. instead, you gathered everything in a neat pile.
“you shouldn’t keep him waiting,” the words came out so harsh when he said it. even wonwoo was surprised, he wasn’t usually like this.
“he’ll be fine,” you said dismissively, not really in the mood to argue with him.
“yn,” wonwoo calls your name as if he hated doing it. “go.”
it took everything within you to stop yourself from yelling at him. “your anger will mean nothing,” seokmin’s words would ring in your ear. so you took a deep breath, dropped what you were doing and left without another word.
Tumblr media
“oh, seok, i was ready to pounce him.” you grumbled, stabbing the lettuce on your salad a little too aggressively.
"what, like sexually?" seokmin realized it was a bad joke. the way you were practically throwing daggers at him made it painfully obvious that you were not in the mood to kid around. "i'm sorry, yn, but you really need to lighten up."
"if there's anyone who needs to lighten up, it's him," you argued, munching on your greens. "in fact, maybe i should light him up."
"i still don't understand how you two got off on the wrong foot," seokmin points out, hoping a proper explanation will emit from you.
you shrugged because you didn’t know what to tell your friend. the first time you properly met wonwoo was at your workplace. you even thought he was cute— quiet, had the nicest smile. your other coworkers were even raving about how polite and kind he was.
imagine your surprise when the ‘polite’ cutie from the editorial floor practically threw daggers at you as soon as you stepped into the office with the cerulean blue folders. this threw off wonwoo as he did the preparation for the meeting.
“in my defence, i saved both our asses when i replaced the folders during that important meeting with the new york office,” you grumbled.
Tumblr media
unbeknownst to you, wonwoo kept a close track of your encounters. the first time wonwoo met you was through university.
you were the president of the school’s undergraduate publication journal and you were only in your second year. wonwoo was one of the new student recruits, he was a third year. he actually thought you were cute until you had assigned him to deal with international relations— wonwoo had applied for the editorial layout section. wonwoo was not happy.
you probably don’t remember him, wonwoo knew it. how could you? you were running around, trying to figure out the logistics, gather and have people review these submissions, edit and have it all printed before the next term starts. meanwhile, wonwoo was stuck somewhere, trying to solve things on his end. you only left notes on his work, you two barely met during meetings. you two had no direct contact.
once you were in your third year, you had to step down as president and become a casual editor instead. wonwoo became the publication journal’s president that year. you two still had no direct contact.
you unintentionally beat him for that librarian assistant position that wonwoo was gunning for as it'll boost his resume.
somehow, for wonwoo, you were always one step ahead of him and he doesn't like that one bit.
so the day you pranced into the office with your signature bright smile, wonwoo felt territorial over a place where he felt like he finally was one step ahead of you.
wonwoo didn't even like that seungcheol served you the last chocolate cake the day he stopped by at heaven's cloud cafe.
"how could you, cheol?" wonwoo huffed, his arms crossed, as cheol placed the iced americano and a slice of strawberry cake on wonwoo's table.
"it's just a slice, dude," seungcheol looked at him weirdly. "and you don't even like chocolate.”
“yeah, but i wanted a chocolate cake today.”
“jeon wonwoo, quit being weird and eat your cake,” jun comments as he appears behind seungcheol, dropping his things on the floor and sitting on the opposite of wonwoo.
while jun waits for his order to arrive, he worked on the monthly report that his boss has been pressuring him to do. as jun went on rambling about how much he hates his job, wonwoo is occupied with the idea of you. how you were always a step ahead of him.
from then, jeon wonwoo declared a one-sided competition against you.
Tumblr media
your idea of jeon wonwoo was simple— he was the cute guy from the editorial team who hates your guts. why? surely, you don’t know.
one rainy afternoon, seokmin made sure to tell you that he won’t be able to give you a ride home, so he gave you the spare umbrella that he had.
“please be kind, ynnie, and let someone stand under your umbrella if they don’t have theirs,” seok reminded you.
“you know damn well i’m always kind,” you huffed with a pout— in which seok just gave you a pointed look before he handed you an umbrella and your lunch.
it seemed that your words had come to haunt you because here you were, walking under the rain using seok’s tiny umbrella, passing by wonwoo who was waiting in front of the office building— probably waiting for the rain to stop as he had no umbrella.
“he’d be waiting all night,” you thought to yourself. you had a long internal battle whether you’d just ignore him but seok’s words were ringing in your ear.
taking a deep breath, you asked “do you want to share an umbrella?”
wonwoo’s startled eyes looked at you and your umbrella. “i’m calling a cab,” he answered. wonwoo wasn’t exactly lying, he’s been trying to get one but the rain has made it extremely difficult to find one.
“well, you’d be calling all night. cabs are extremely hard to find especially at times like these,” you answered. wonwoo hated that you were right. again, always one step ahead of him. “subways are still running, do you want to walk together?”
wonwoo stared at you for what felt like an eternity before you rolled your eyes and pulled him under your umbrella. “we’re walking, stop overthinking it.”
you two were walking quietly in the rain. you’ve been coworkers for almost a year now and you can’t remember the time you and wonwoo had a proper conversation— one that you two didn’t end up bickering about senseless things. you didn’t even know why you two were always butting heads when you two were always working closely together.
as you tried to squeeze the two of you under seok’s tiny umbrella, you noticed that his shoulder was practically soaking wet. of all the umbrellas that he’d give you, he had to choose the tiniest one he owned. this prompted you to hover the umbrella more on his side, allowing the rain to soak your exposed shoulder instead.
wonwoo noticed how you moved the umbrella towards him, making him raise an eyebrow. you were wonwoo’s greatest puzzle— he can’t guess your next move and what’s worse is that you’re always one step ahead of him. “what are you doing?” he asked with furrowed brows.
you looked up at him, suddenly aware of how tall he is. no wonder your arms were getting tired from holding that damn umbrella up. “what do you mean?” you asked, confused by his question.
wonwoo grabbed the umbrella from you— your hands touching for a brief moment. you ignored whatever was forming in the pit of your stomach. maybe you’re just hungry? wonwoo hovered the umbrella closer to you, fully aware of the fact that his shoulder was getting wet from the rain. “you’re getting soaked,” wonwoo replied curtly.
“so are you,” you pointed out as you held the umbrella and tried to move it closer to him. however, wonwoo resisted it.
“i’m fine,” he says.
“whatever you say,” you huffed “it’s not like you intended to have annoyingly broad shoulders anyway,” you grumbled more to yourself, hoping he didn’t hear it. however, wonwoo heard your frustration over his shoulders and he couldn’t fight off the smile on his face.
it was the first time he could openly admit to himself that you made him smile. it was also the first time you caught him smiling.
Tumblr media
“oh, how adorable,” mingyu grinned upon hearing the umbrella-sharing story from wonwoo. “and you said you weren’t one for office romances,” he teased earning a glare from wonwoo.
"because i'm not," wonwoo rolled his eyes "and i don't like her," he said almost defensively.
mingyu snorted "yeah, as if i haven't heard that line before." he said while setting up the living room for a movie night between him, wonu, jun, and chan. jun and ichan were running a little late as they were buying drinks.
"well, it's true," wonwoo crossed his arms "there's something about her that makes me feel like..." wonwoo trailed off, finding the right words to say.
"like?" mingyu sat on the couch, turning towards wonwoo— clearly invested.
"like... fuck, i don't know..."
mingyu lets out a dramatic gasp. "dude," he stares at wonwoo in complete awe. "you swore..."
"and?"
"you never swear unless you're completely frustrated," mingyu pointed out, a teasing look glimmering in his eyes. "you like yn, huh?!"
before wonwoo could even answer, mingyu's doorbell rang. saved by the bell, wonwoo thought.
"oh, this is not over, jeon wonwoo." mingyu said with a smirk, making wonwoo groan.
Tumblr media
"seok, quit looking at me like that," you whined as you hugged the pillow tighter, placing your chin on top of the pillow.
"what?" seok grinned "it's nice to know that your beef with your coworker is slowly coming to an end."
"he was probably thinking how ridiculous i sounded for mentioning his shoulders," you grumbled. "why did i even mention his shoulders?!" you groaned.
seokmin couldn't help but laugh at how adorable you were being. "oh my sweet, ynnie," he cooed, ruffling your hair.
"here you go, yn," vernon said as he handed you a pint of ice cream. you were hosting a sleepover with seok, vern, and kwan. you three were waiting for seungkwan to arrive with the rest of the snacks.
you initially thought that you'd have the ice cream later but vernon thought that you might need it sooner than later. "thanks, nonie," you smiled at him.
"for what it's worth ynnie, he finally smiled at what you said." vernon said before taking a bite of his ice cream.
"and now yn is acting up because she thought he was cute," seokmin said teasingly, making vernon laugh.

wonwoo believes that the universe is out to get him. he kept complaining that you were always one step ahead of him and now, the universe is starting to retaliate.
"take yn," his manager tells him, making wonwoo clutch tighter on his notebook.
"sir?" wonwoo must be hearing things. there's no way that his manager actually asked him to take yn, right?
"take yn ln," his manager stresses your name. "didn't you two work on the last summit?"
"yes, but sir—"
"then it's final," his manager dismisses wonwoo "you two did a wonderful job with the last summit, i'd like you two to work on this year's professional development sessions."
"you two make a wonderful team," was the final thing that his manager said. without another word, wonwoo left the office feeling defeated. how can wonwoo be one step ahead of you if the universe is making him walk alongside you?
Tumblr media
it was no surprise that wonwoo was everyone's office crush in the editorial department. people would often turn their heads whenever he walked by. this time was no exception.
the people on your floor knew the budding tension between you two. so when wonwoo was walking towards your desk with two coffees and a bag of dessert in hand, heads definitely turned and people were bound to talk.
"here," wonwoo hands you an iced americano and a bag of what you assumed was a slice of chocolate cake, catching you off-guard. your desk computer was showing the available job listings in the other departments. "are you thinking of transferring?" he asked as he leaned closer to your monitor— closer to you. his cologne was easily filling your nostrils. you hate that he smells good. how are you supposed to despise a man who smells good?! you thought. wow, the bar is literally on the floor.
"i'm keeping my options open," you answered as you crossed your arms, snapping yourself to reality. "it's not like you're making my life any easier here," you muttered the latter sentence, though you did hope that he heard it.
it's been a month since you and wonwoo started working on the company's professional development sessions. it's also been a month of torture. you've gotten frequent migraines that you started looking up if taking tylenol frequently will kill you. you didn't like the results.
wonwoo heard the latter sentence. while the month has been torture for you, wonwoo didn't mind your company at all. sure you were butting heads most of the time, but he noticed how much you were willing to compromise just to settle a conclusion between you two. wonwoo liked pushing your buttons. he found you cute even if you wanted to bite his head off.
"is this a peace offering?" you motioned to the coffee and the cake that was sitting on your desk.
"for what?" wonwoo smirked, playing coy. "you agreed to the after-session event, fair and square."
"bitch?!" you stared at him as if he's gone mad "if anything, you made it your life's mission to annoy me into agreeing that going to an escape room is what we need after overloading our brains from the sessions."
"yn ln, you know i can go to HR because you cursed at me, right?"
"jeon wonwoo, you know we're banned from that floor unless there's a serious allegation," you said, massaging your temples. "now humour me, what's with the coffee and cake?"
"oh, i stopped by at heaven's cloud café earlier and jeonghan practically insisted that you have these," wonwoo said casually, looking away.
you stared at him suspiciously, "thanks, i guess." you haven't spoken to jeonghan in a while since you've always been swamped with work. but maybe that's why you got free coffee and desserts?
before you could even ask wonwoo another question, he quickly left without even looking back at you. deciding to ignore it, you snapped a quick picture of the coffee and the cake, shooting jeonghan a quick text, "thanks for the coffee & cake, hannie! miss u! ♡"
Tumblr media
"jeon wonwoo, is there a reason why yn sent me a text earlier, thanking me for the coffee and cake that i didn't give her?" jeonghan asked wonwoo, who was busy typing away on his laptop. wonwoo stopped at jeonghan's place after work as their other friends will be dropping by later as well.
"i don't know what you're talking about," wonwoo mumbled, not looking at han in the eye.
jeonghan was having none of it. "i'm texting yn that you gave those things to her," he threatened, pulling out his phone.
knowing jeonghan is probably going to commit to it, wonwoo sighed and threw his hands in defeat. "fine."
“and so the plot thickens,” jeonghan smirked, crossing his arms. “so is there a reason why?"
"she was having a rough day," wonwoo explained, closing his laptop. that report will be dealt with tomorrow. "i felt bad."
jeonghan raised an eyebrow at him. "i thought you didn't like her?"
"i don't."
"funny, because that's an odd way of expressing how you dislike her," jeonghan said, making wonwoo roll his eyes.
“i can at least recognize all the work she’s been doing in planning the pd session,” wonwoo replied, defensive.
jeonghan smirked because he knew. he knew that wonwoo was walking on a thin line. in fact, jeonghan was 100% sure that his friend has gone soft for you. “okay, whatever you say.”

“ynnie!” seungcheol calls your name as he spots you, busy choosing what kind of juice you are going to buy. you decided to stop by at the grocery to grab a couple of things for the fridge.
you gave him a small wave, smiling. seungcheol, however, was eager to give you a hug. you, cheol, and han shared a couple of classes back when you three were in university. you were always supportive of their endeavours that’s why cheol & han always had a soft spot for you— they considered you like a little sister that they always had to take care of.
“how was the cake from earlier? you know i’ve been taking a lot of baking lessons recently,” cheol said with a proud smile.
“oh, it was great, cheol!” you said sincerely “i sent jeonghan a text earlier, saying thanks.”
“thanks for what?”
“for the cake…?” you trailed off, a bit off-guard by the confusion plastered on seungcheol’s face.
“why would you thank jeonghan?” seungcheol asked, even more confused.
“jeonghan wasn’t there?”
cheol shook his head no. “unless jeonghan told wonwoo, but i assumed wonwoo bought it for you. i was teasing him about it too, since he doesn’t like chocolate that much.”
“ah,” was all you could say as you felt your cheeks burning, surprised by cheol’s sudden information. is that why jeonghan hasn't replied to your text at all?
cheol suddenly felt like he just triggered a bomb. oh, he fucked up. as if on cue, his phone started ringing. mingyu was calling. "okay, i'm heading off, ynnie."
you just nodded and waved goodbye, feeling confused. it was a good thing that you won't be seeing wonwoo during the weekend otherwise you would've gone mad.
Tumblr media
heaven's cloud café was buzzing with people when you came in.
you spent a lot of time debating if you had to improvise how you would spend your sunday morning. you would usually stop by the heaven's cloud café and spend a good chunk of your time there— reading or chatting with jeonghan and seungcheol.
however, knowing that wonwoo might stop by at the cafe, it left you questioning if you wanted to derail your usual sunday routine.
and yet, your pride got the best of you. no matter how much you didn't want to see wonwoo, you weren't going to derail your sunday routine especially if it involved coffee.
although the café was usually busy on the weekends, today was unusually busy— you wondered if there was a special promotion taking place. jeonghan hasn't even acknowledged your presence yet as han is busy manning the till while also preparing the drinks. cheol is probably in the kitchen, preparing food.
you settled on the last empty table at the very back— dropping off your things, deciding to order a bit later once the line from the till calms down.
while you were busy scrolling on your phone, someone placed a tall glass of iced americano and a slice of strawberry cake on your table.
"you should try this, it's a house favourite," someone with a deep voice said. you looked up and saw jeon wonwoo with slightly messy hair, wearing your favourite black specs and a white button-up, smiling at you. fuck, he looks good. is hell officially frozen?
"are you perhaps a twin of jeon wonwoo?" you asked, completely boggled.
"yn, what the hell?" wonwoo laughs at your incredulous take, making you even more confused. why is this wonwoo variant laughing and smiling at you? most of all, why are they bringing you food when you haven't even ordered?! "what made you say that?"
you reached out your hand and poked his cheek, making him laugh. "are you really wonwoo from sector17 press?"
"yn, seriously, what makes you think that it's not me?"
"why are you so smiley all of a sudden," you cried, weirded out. "and why are you serving me food?"
"my, do you like it when i give you a hard time?" wonwoo said, teasingly "is that a kink of yours?"
"you're fucking weird, jeon wonwoo," you smacked his arm. "i've never met the weekend version of wonwoo and i don't think i like it," you cried quietly to yourself.
"cute," wonwoo says quietly, still smiling at you. "i'll talk to you later, okay? i'm helping cheol and han for the day and i feel like they'll beat my ass if they see me slacking off." wonwoo gently ruffled your hair and walked away, leaving you flabbergasted.
you felt that familiar feeling in the pit of your stomach. oh god, what the fuck just happened?
Tumblr media
the friday night that jeonghan found out that wonwoo used jeonghan’s good name to protect his image, was the same night that seungcheol bumped into you at the grocery store.
drinks were getting passed rather at a rapid speed. for them, this night was a gem among other nights. most of jeonghan’s friends were at his place, enjoying the night away.
“ya, wonwoo,” cheol suddenly calls wonwoo, who was barely drinking— as per cheol’s opinion. “i thought tonight was the night that you were going to get loose.”
wonwoo chuckled, “i’m pacing myself.”
jeonghan snorted. “cheol, you’re talking to the guy who still cannot admit his high school crush on our ynnie.”
this earned a couple of laughs from the group, mainly from mingyu and jun.
“yoon jeonghan, just because you’re in a happy relationship—” wonwoo threw a balled up napkin at him, obviously not knowing how to reply.
“oh, wons, that reminds me…” cheol started rubbing the back of his head “i told yn that it was you who gave her the food and not jeonghan.”
as soon as the words left cheol’s mouth, it’s as if wonwoo felt annoyingly sober. he downed the tall shot of bacardi that was supposed to be mingyu’s shot.
“i don’t get why you’re tiptoeing around your feelings for her,” mingyu pointed out, filling the shot glass again. “it’s not like there’s a company policy against dating your coworkers.”
“isn’t there?” joshua asked. wonwoo shook his head no. “lucky bastard.” shua muttered, taking mingyu’s shot.
“you guys, what’s the point of doing rounds when you’re taking the shots as you please?” mingyu whines.
“i thought you didn’t like yn?” jun asked wonwoo, taking a bite of the kimchi jeon. “or is that like a weird defence mechanism against your feelings?”
"oh please," mingyu rolled his eyes "wonwoo had a huge crush on yn ever since our uni days," he pointed out, prompting wonwoo to hit him.
"weren't you two in like a school publication together?" jeonghan asked, taking the shot from mingyu.
"oh, right! you had like a one-sided beef with yn," jun's eyes lit up briefly, then proceeded to smirk at wonwoo, "ya! is that how you show your affection?"
"obviously not," cheol grins "our wonwoo is the type to show his affection through actions, not words."
"what are the chances that they'd end up working under the same company though," joshua commented with a fond smile.
"and in the same department too," jeonghan added.
wonwoo groans, before taking a shot, "i hate all of you."
"you two have a deep history, have you two never talked?" joshua asked, now invested.
wonwoo shakes his head, "we only talk about work."
"if they talk about work," mingyu laughs, "all they do is argue."
"how do you know all of this, gyu?" cheol asked in disbelief, laughing, "you work at a different company."
"i work with seokmin," mingyu replied "and seok likes to tell stories about yn."
"ya, didn't we invite him tonight?" cheol suddenly remembers, looking at his phone to check his message thread with seok.
"he's probably with yn," wonwoo muttered before taking another shot. this gets attention from the rest of the group— a series of teasing smirks and playful looks being exchanged.
like a kid on christmas morning, a bright smile appears on mingyu's face. "won, are you perhaps jealous?" he teased, with the new-found information.
wonwoo scoffed but didn't answer the question. wonwoo swore he wasn't the jealous type. but for some reason, he can't get over the fact that his friend was closer to you.
wonwoo knew that there was nothing going on with you and seok.
however, seok was your person, wonwoo would always think. you felt happier around seok. if wonwoo didn't know any better, he would assume that you liked seok. maybe she does, wonwoo can't help but think.
"you know they're just friends, right?" mingyu reminded wonwoo.
wonwoo doesn't say anything. he was just waiting for his friends to butt into the conversation. wonwoo's eyes caught jeonghan's. jeonghan smiles, that mischievous smile of his, leaving wonwoo confused.
"won, do you wanna know who she likes?" jeonghan instigates, leaning forward.
wonwoo waits, does he really wanna know?
jeonghan smiles, then says "you."
Tumblr media
wonwoo didn't believe in signs— for him, every little decision a person makes is pulled by the desired outcome. however, you were his only exception.
"if ynnie stops by at the café on sunday, will you finally talk to her like civilized beings?" jeonghan's words rang loudly in wonwoo's ear.
"i don't believe in signs," wonwoo states simply.
"and you can't make an exception for yn?" jeonghan knew how to play the game. he's just waiting for wonwoo to swallow his pride and address his suppressed feelings.
"maybe." wonwoo answers, making jeonghan smile mischievously. and so, it begins, jeonghan thinks.
it was ridiculous— waiting for something to happen when he could've just started a conversation with you. but it's so hard when it's you. god, it's so hard for wonwoo when it's you because you make him feel things that he thought were only exaggerated by films.
wonwoo didn't know if jeonghan's revelation about you was a lie, but he'd be lying if he said that it didn't affect him— because it did. it felt like he was back in high school and he's not sure if that's something he liked.
jeonghan and seungcheol were very much aware of your routine. every now and then, you would visit the café every sunday— even during the morning rush. they were most definitely aware of what's waiting for you and wonwoo.
the two owners had tasked wonwoo to help with serving the orders as more people flooded the café. "make yourself useful while you wait for your girlfriend!" was all jeonghan said as he handed wonwoo an apron.
and so when you entered the café, wonwoo gathered all his strength to talk to you casually, even if it sent him through an overdrive.
Tumblr media
while you were walking towards the washroom, you bumped into jeonghan who was grinning at you. you knew that man long enough to know that he's hiding something when he's smiling like that.
"ya," you pulled jeonghan to the side. "what are you hiding?"
"what do you mean?" han answers, blinking at you innocently.
"why is wonwoo being nice and smiley," you asked him with a huff, crossing your arms. wonwoo being smiley was something you didn't know would affect you this bad. "he's being too cute for my liking," you muttered the latter part.
jeonghan laughs at your dilemma. "isn't that what you wanted?"
"what do you mean—" you were confused with jeonghan's comment until it dawned on you. you remembered the time you went out for drinks with jeonghan and seungkwan. "yoon jeonghan!" you slapped his arm, making him yelp but he was still laughing.
"what?" he looks at you, acting confused as he rubs his arm. "i'm being supportive here!"
"you promised me you wouldn't tell him," you pouted.
"oh please, he was jealous of seok, i had to throw him something."
"so you told wonwoo about the time i got drunk with you and professed my undying feelings for him instead?!"
"no," jeonghan replies. his eyes moved past yours, looking past your shoulders, and smiled. "but i think you already did." jeonghan says, patting your shoulder before he left.
Tumblr media
wonwoo was sitting across from you with a smile on his face. you've never seen this man smile at you this much, it was starting to freak you out.
"don't look at me like that," you grumbled, glaring at wonwoo.
"i can't help it," he looks at you almost tenderly. "you look adorable even when you're sulking like that."
you felt the familiar sensation in your stomach. how can jeon wonwoo just say things like these to you? does he not care about your well-being?! how you'd feel?
"that was a long time ago, by the way," you said in defence— as if the damage hadn't been done. wonwoo waits for you to continue your sentence. "you know, me having a crush on you," you continued, your tone getting quieter after each word.
"i'm sorry, what was that?" wonwoo leans closer, as if he didn't hear what you just said. you knew he was just teasing you as you noticed that he was trying to fight off a smirk.
"i don't like you, jeon wonwoo," you whispered, prompting wonwoo to only focus on your lips.
"that's too bad because," wonwoo paused briefly and leaned even more, "i like you."
his face was dangerously close to yours— wonwoo didn't care if half of his body was practically hovering over the table. he wanted to lean closer to you.
you felt frozen in your place. a part of you wanted to lean back and smack him, but there's also a part of you that just wanted to grab his stupid face and kiss it.
"ya!" jeonghan suddenly appeared beside your table "if you two are going to make out in my café, can you move to cheol's office? i'm planning to keep this place family-friendly," jeonghan snickered.
maybe you should just kiss wonwoo and smack jeonghan instead.
