I love autumnal smells- unsurprisingly given that fruits, spiced flowers, baked goods and forests are among my favorite scents! Some scents I love that I'm reaching for these days, partly to get myself in the mood...

Do you have any Pinterest boards, brands, or prompts you follow to find the good stuff? I’m trying to supplement my wardrobe and I love your taste. Figured an ask would work to let the people know too!

So I started this blog in the 2010's and a lot of the blogs and creators I found inspo from are now defunct. One that is still around is LookBook.nu, a site where people post their OOTDs and you can search by style or color.

Next, if anyone is trying to narrow down their style I would recommend going to Google images and looking up different styles of neckline, sleeves, skirts, pants, and shoes. That way you can learn the styles you are drawn to so when you are looking for clothing online you can type something like "bishop sleeve blouse" into google and find exactly what you're looking for.

These days I also get a lot of ideas from TikTok. Just search tags like "Alt fashion" "goth outfits" and whatnot. There are a lot of great creators that make content for how to develop your vibe. I can do a post on some of the ones I like at some point.

As far as brands that I think people who enjoy this blog might also like, I've broken it down into a few categories.

The truth is I shop a lot at pretty typical places you might find at the mall like Old Navy (they've actually been putting out some interesting stuff this year), Target, Fashion Nova, Forever 21, and online Shein (unfortunately). It's not about where you shop its about the items themselves and what you pair them with.

And like I mentioned already the best option for me lately has been Tik Tok because you can easily search tons of content for things like "ethereal aesthetic" and they break it down on how to achieve that look. I love perfume and there are a lot of creators that make videos on really specific vibes for "how to smell like a forest witch" and whatnot. It's really fun to go down those rabbit holes and you'll learn about different brands and aesthetics.

Vampire perfume recs?

For 3 pieces of vampire media:

Jane Gaskell's The Shiny Narrow Grin -- Prada Candy! ("[...] caramel accord with warm benzoin resin inside a cloud of white musk.") But mostly I think the heroine probably smells like hairspray and soap.

Simon Raven's Doctors Wear Scarlet -- Penhaligon Hammam Bouquet (lavender, rose, sandalwood) or Tom Ford Tobacco Oud. (Again. I just really love and really hate Tobacco Oud.)

The Lost Boys (1987)-- in honor of Star, Coty Wild Musk Patchouli Blend or something else extremely musk-y, I know that girl smells very good but I also know that she also smells like hairspray. For a modern perfume, Nemat International's amber oil. Honorary mention of Sixteen92's wonderful Death By Stereo!.

So many of my fave vampire-y perfumes are indies :

BPAL Penny Dreadful ("Soft perfume evocative of noir heroines over rich red grave loam")

BPAL Othello ("Arabian musk with two roses and a bevy of Middle Eastern and Indian spices")

Sixteen92 Pyromancy ("Green cardamom, fireplace embers, agarwood, smoked tea, white tobacco, hearth smoke")

Whisper Sisters 1984 ("clove bud, sweet clove, vanilla bourbon, tonka bean, burnt sugar, aged red cedar, dark musk, myrrh")

Whisper Sisters Detroit ("smoky incense, spicy musk, cannabis, patchouli, Egyptian musk, clove" -- Mira, you specifically need to check out Whisper Sisters' scents because they rule.)

But my bulletproof vampire perfumes are the canonical BPAL Only Lovers Left Alive perfumes, which frankly I ended up loving a lot more than the actual movie. I own Ian ("shaggy leather, sweet rum absolute, and patchouli") and Adam ("black leather, pale sandalwood, ambergris accord, and the memory of a long-lost Victorian fougère. His internal life seems to be reflected in his lair, so his perfume also possesses the scent of the wood of his guitars, the rosin from his violin bow, the musty wool of neglected Oriental carpets, the plastic, metal, and magnetic tape of his reel-to-reel, the dust that permeates everything.") and to my regret they're both so good. IIRC they were both either gifts from @allthestoriescantbelies or she introduced me to them so they have a lot of really affectionate feeling attached to them on top of good smells + cute guys.

mate was talking about perfumes so here are my faves with some important notes:

 I don’t have much natural body odour even when I’m super sweaty (ty asian genes), my skin is naturally dry and I live in a hot dry Australian coastal climate (most perfumes will smell stronger the more moist the environment is), my body chemistry eats perfume (reduces longevity and also knocks perfumes down to their base notes within like a minute of wear) and rejects citrus (turns it sour) specifically. These perfumes will probably be too strong for many people even if we do share the same taste in scents, but if you’re looking for something with a little oomph, here you go.

Jazz Club by Maison Margiela - warm sweet tobacco, like an unlit cigar. My daily go-to, inoffensive enough to wear in the office, yet still sexy and edible.

Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford - it’s tobacco! it’s vanilla! it’s not nearly so complex as to warrant the price but it sure smells great!

Another Oud by Juliette Has A Gun - it’s oud! I don’t know how to explain this if you’ve never smelled oud perfume before, but it’s oud + sweet sexy skin musk.

Not A Perfume by Juliette Has A Gun - it’s ambroxan! which to me means Sleepy Boy Smell. For those of you who are really horny!

Midnight Marquee by Solstice Scents - darrrkkkk leather, musk, gasoline and vanilla. “Gasoline?!” I hear you thinking, but it works incredibly well in such a potently sugary perfume, giving it a slight metallic edge. LOVE it.

Shadow Show by Sixteen92 - I bought this and Midnight Marquee together while looking for gasoline scents. MM definitely hits that note better, but Shadow Show still has a nice machine oil scent combined with popcorn! Very unexpected, but so sweet and lovely and atmospheric.

Obsession for Men by Calvin Klein - I bought this because it is the #1 perfume that tigers are attracted to, even over female tiger musk. It smells exactly like what you would expect a businessman in the 80s to have smelled like. Huge punch in the nose of spicy amber and vanilla. Are you seeing a trend yet

Vanillary by Lush - it’s vanilla! it has a touch of tonka and jasmine, but it’s mostly vanilla like cake batter vanilla not anything fancy. Love it for girly days!

Fantasy by Britney Spears - PAVLOVA IN A BOTTLE. It’s super cute and works very well layered with other scents. This and Vanillary together are my fave for hyperfemme days!

Roaring Radcliff by Penhaligon’s - suuuuper sweet gingerbread tobacco honey perfume, unfortunately it’s very bland in Australian weather and smelled much more complex in London where I fell in love with it in the first place :( Similar to Tobacco Vanille which is no doubt why I liked it so much!

Lord George by Penhaligon’s - guess what it’s more vanilla. Stronger on the woody amber side this time though, a slightly more masc vibe but not to the degree of Obsession For Men lol.

how do you feel about perfume or cologne? do you personally wear it or do you prefer not to?

I like it in subtle quantities! I would like to be able to smell you if we are close enough to hug ideally.

I don't wear it every day, but I have a small collection that I spray on from time to time. I have a bottle of Prada Candy Gloss (no the regular candy! Gloss has a grapfruit note that I like a lot) for when I want to smell really obnoxious and sweet. When I want something a little more subtle and masc, I use Bad Reputation or The Vanishing Hitchhiker from Sixteen92.

arcana wildcraft’s You lie in all my many thoughts, like Light: The scent of succor from a cup of black English tea with warm bread, blood oranges, tangerines, clementines, ripe apricots, and a glowing sunrise. 

this was a GWP freebie many moons ago. probably in 2017? and i don’t think it’s ever been rereleased, which is a shame, because it’s one of my favorite perfumes and i feel bad talking about something that’s next to impossible to get.

this perfume is a lovely warm weather scent. lots of citrus with smooth black tea, backed by subtle fluffy bread. it smells both simple and complicated at the same time, which is the zone i think arcana does their best work in. it has good longevity and a decent throw, though it being mostly citrus means it shouldn’t offend anyone. except for cats. sorry to coconut, my own cat, who hates citrus.

i’ve called this perfume the summer version of sixteen92′s Sarah Good (though beware s92 these days, they’ve been not filling orders) if that helps give an idea what it smells like. they both share the bread and citrus, though sarah good has mild smoke and maple leaves and you lie in all my many thoughts has tea. the bread note also feels similar to arcana’s Pumpkins Crave Bread, though it’s more subtle here. it’s mostly tea and citrus.
