the thing about nahida is that while she is very obviously purposefully depicted as childlike in image & childhood in general is an extremely important symbol of hers. she's Very notably Not literally a child

#sorry this is just like a fandom pet peeve of mine to see her infantilized #because it just feels like. Like okay her whole thing was how her agency was taken away from her because people automatically assumed #that her lack of knowledge meant they could assume near proprietary control over her entire life #and this being a one on one allegory for how children & childhood in general is treated #the loss of autonomy under the guise of protection being such an insidious form of abuse #so with nahida specifically treating her as a child even though she looks like one feels. this is a very random thought i had inside of the shower but...

what if instead of leaving with paimon and nahida after fighting scaramouche, we actually go to check if he's ok?

you did it... you finally defeated him... after so long since you last saw him...

you watch as nahida takes away the electro gnosis inside of scaramouche's new form, as he is begging her to give it back to him, with a defeated look in his face.

she takes the electro gnosis in her hands, while scaramouche slipped from his god form and hit straight into the ground.

"we did it! we defeated the balladeer!" paimon squealed, floating in excitement.

"we should go now, they are waiting for us." nahida said, walking away from the destroyed mechanic.

you couldn't help but feel bad, yes, he did so many bad things in his life, but his past hit a core in your heart, it was just so heartbreaking to know he was betrayed three times. By a child, by his friend, and, the worst of them all, by his own mother.

"i'll stay here for a little while longer, i want to analyze this body a little longer." you tell the both of them.

"alright!! just be safe!!" paimon said, leaving with nahida through the front door.

when they left, you let out a long sigh, not only of exhaustion, but also of happiness. you wish your sibling was here to see the amount of things you have done in teyvat. you're sure they would be proud of you.

while you walk around the arena, you see a string of hair coming out of a grey brick, specifically, a stray of indigo hair.

you walk faster and see the exhausted body of the balladeer, passed out on the cold, hard floor. you kneel down and observe his body, bringing your hand down to brush his hair out of his face, but before you could even reach his face, his hand grabbed your wrist, giving it a tight squeeze.

"and just what do you think you are doing, mortal?" he asked you, looking at you with defeated eyes, but not failing to give you his dead, cold eyes, which always give you a chill down your spine.

"umm...trying to...help you?" you say to him, giving him a little laugh, even though it wasn't funny. he looks at you, with a blank look in his face.

"look, you already did it, okay? you already saved sumeru, so why don't you go and join the talking pixie radio and buer, huh?" he told you, looking the other way. you gave a sigh and sit right next to him, releasing your wrist from his grasp.

"you know...i'm not the hero everyone makes me out to be...there are things that i wish to not tell anyone, and i don't do all of these favors for nothing, they always wanted me to do something for them, and i only wanted one thing...to find my sibling, but it's as if everyone chooses to ignore me, even when i sacrifice my life to do them one favor, they never give me anything back, they just give me a "hey thanks for saving our nation, we will give you an important title and good luck!" and another thing that i have also learned is to not trust people with "high authority" because then, they will dump all of their work on you..." you sigh "i know more then anyone that it's a difficult situation, but you aren't alone, i hope you know that." you say to him, looking deep into his pupils.

you two sit in silence for a few moments, before he spoke again.

"well, as much as i hate your guts, i understand you a bit, a lot actually...archons are not to be trusted, no one related to the gods are to be trusted, they just want to use for their own personal gain and just dump you like you're a piece of garbage." he says to you, with an understanding look on his face.

you never thought of the gods as someone untrustworthy, but looking back at it now, they never did anything for you, so what is there to lose? your reputation as someone who is easily used? you had enough of it, treated as someone else's maid.

"kunikuzushi?"

"hm?"

"i'm assuming you don't work for the fatui anymore, so...do you want to work together?"

his eyes widened for a split second, but quickly returns to normal.

"for your first statement, yes, i don't work for the fatui anymore, and, actually, i would love to work with you." he tells you, with a little smile in his face.

you giggle in excitement, and wrap your arms around his neck, and, unconsciously, you give him a kiss on his lips, which his eyes widened. you quickly separate from him, your face as red as a tomato.

"i'm so sorry!! i don't know why i just did that, i'll just hmph-" he quickly shuts you up with another kiss on your lips, but this time, it lastes longer, and it was more passionate.

"i don't understand why you are suddently apologizing for something i enjoyed." he tells you with a smirk on his face.

"um...w-well then, you don't mind if we did that again, right?" you ask him, stuttering a bit, he didn't give you an answer, simply bringing you back to reconnect your lips once again.

so yk how there's like a huge age discourse in genshin over the ages of characters?

hyv doesn't confirm ages besides like vague estimates so it's pretty much up to players' imaginations

personally i tend to abide by a set of guidelines for estimating a character's age, which is basically like a little test to help me determine whether a character seems like a child to me or not.

disclaimer: this is just how i see things and i am not claiming people should follow this. as hyv doesn't confirm things, i usually leave it up to my handy little guidelines to help me personally determine whether i see a character as a child, teen, or an adult.

Does the character look like a child?

This is where most discourse seems to come from since the hoyoverse art style kinda makes it feel a little vague sometimes. I was kinda staring at how short some female hsr models actually were, like I was switching rapidly between Clara and Pela wondering if Clara was just a really tall child or if Pela is just a very short adult, which do exist contrary to belief of certain people.

Sometimes there ARE obvious tells like how Bailu and Nahida and other child models look compared to adult models like Jing Yuan and Alhaitham and etc.

If the answer is yes, add 1 point. If unclear, no point. If "kinda", add half a point.

2. Does the character sound like a child?

This is meant to cover both the voice and the dialogue. Sometimes you don't really hear a character's voice in certain medias like visual novels that don't have voice acting.

Like compare how Klee and Hook talk vs how Zhongli and Jing Yuan talk. Klee messes up saying words sometimes and uses simple vocabulary while Zhongli dumps essays worth of dialogue whenever you talk to him.

If the answer is yes, add 1 point. If no or unclear, no point. If "kinda", half a point.

3. Does the character behave like a child?

This one may be harder to tell because people have VERY different standards for what makes childish behavior but there are still tells like: general experience, maturity, how they handle conflict, etc.

If the answer is yes, add 1 point. If no or unclear, no point. If "kinda", half a point.

4. Does the character get treated like a child?

Again, kind of ambiguous but there are some obvious examples like how Bailu has to be monitored constantly because she keeps running off to do stuff or how Klee gets "solitary confinement" often.

If the answer is yes, add 1 point. If no or unclear, no point. If "kinda", half a point.

5. Does the character have a job or a certain status?

Typically adults are the ones with jobs but thanks to anime writing, even children can have jobs sometimes, but I find that these children tend to be outliers. The only place it'd be normal for a child to have a job, I feel, is the Xianzhou due to Vidyadhara lore. But even then, Bailu is still treated like a child despite her supposed long lifespan because she looks and behaves like a child.

You get the idea of how to score this.

6. Does the lore have any indicator for their age?

This is basically just "Is there canon material that says they are a certain age range"

if yes, you should probably adhere to that first then as it has the highest level of importance here compared to the other questions. There are some cases where you might need to use the other factors though like how Nahida is 500 yet looks like a child, talks like a child, and acts like one.

So yeah, these are how I tell between adult, teen, or child.

If you guys want, I can rate a specific character on whether I see them as an adult or a child.

Having one point say yes doesn't necessarily dictate what a character's age is since we have different special cases for specific characters. However if multiple things point to a certain age range then you might have to consider that.
