hey so, no idea if youre the right person to ask about this but you got any tips for horror comic paneling? you dont need to give tips on like how to make panels spooky just how do you think a comic's paneling could go wrong without being bad. like there being no box for a panel but the drawing inside still being there. sorry if this isnt coherent
ok im not a big horror person (spooky!) but i know EXACTLY what you mean and im giving you My Wife in the Wood to read as homework. the horror is shown more thru artstyle changes and typography, but there's still some great examples of horror thru composition
Tumblr media
(notice how the text goes from small and straight to bolder, letters of different sizes, goes all over the place)
this post i made might also help-- horror thru colors, shadows, breaking conventions- i think in general horror is a lot thru breaking conventions
Tumblr media
kinda reminds me of Blood on the Tracks, which has relatively simple composition but still manages to make everything unsettling thru shadows especially (notice the butterflies on top of the panels themselves too- gives a dreamlike feeling but since its a spooky moment the dreamlike makes it UNSETTLING)
Tumblr media
also you should read I Am A Hero, more specifically chapter 11, which is the only time i was reading a comic and was actually too scared to turn the page (if you read it online make sure to see only one page at a time for the Full Effect), if a comic makes me scared to turn the page then it has SUCCEEDED
Tumblr media
another little one about typography but i rly like how in omori the font changes for some spooky moments... goes from this
Tumblr media
to this
Tumblr media
which i believe omocat said the second one was them drawing with their non-dominant hand... so smart... so spooky... yeah
anyway tldr: i think it's all about breaking conventions. if you have your whole comic be small square panels and SUDDENLY you put a full page panel then it's gonna catch the eye, its gonna be freaky, that kind of stuff
