Where The Buffalo Gunman Is Now
By Riley Uremovic,Syracuse University Class of 2023
June 21, 2022
Tumblr media
Very recently, as seen all over the news, a shooting occurred at a supermarket, Tops Friendly Market, in Buffalo, New York. The gunman was a teenage boy who shot 13 people and killed 10 using a semiautomatic Bushmaster rifle, a type of assault rifle. Most of those shot were Black and the consequences of this horrific event deemed it one of the “deadliest racist massacres in recent American History” [1].
Motives certainly stemmed from the gunman’s white supremacist background. Later on, it was found that there was even a Black racial slur on the barrel of the weapon. Gendron supported an ideology called replacement theory which led him to commit these unspeakable acts. This replacement theory is a conspiracy theory which states that people who are not white are being brought to the United States and other Western countries of the like to replace white voters and change political outcomes. Those believing in the theory also think that nonwhites will ultimately lead to the eradication of whites [2]. Before the shooting occurred, Gendron had posted about his belief in replacement theory over a chat application called Discord. A manifesto was also posted after the shooting expressing these sorts of views.
If the theory is not enough support to his motives, the gunman also travelled over 200 miles to get to the supermarket and livestreamed it to express that he had a plan in place. He chose this supermarket in the eastern side of Buffalo solely because of the large population of Black residents [3].
The gunman, identified as an 18-year-old named Payton S. Gendron, is from Gendron of Conklin, small town in southern New York. As of a few days ago, Gendron was charged with federal hate crimes along with weapons violations, to which he has pleaded “not guilty” to. His exact charges are as follows: “10 counts of hate crime resulting in death, three counts of hate crime involving bodily injury, 10 counts of use of a firearm to commit murder during and in relation to a violent crime, and three counts of use and discharge of a firearm during a violent crime, according to a criminal complaint” [6]. He was also charged with many state charges such as domestic terrorism motivated by hate and 10 counts of first-degree murder [3].
It is possible for Gendron to also get the death penalty, since 3 of his federal charges have the potential to endorse that. However, currently there is a halt on federal executions. The Biden administration put a stop to federal executions because of the Attorney General Merrick Garland, Attorney General since March of 2021. Garland believed that a review of the practice of federal capital punishment was needed before it continued to function. This was because former President Donald Trump ordered capital punishment for more than 12 people after 17 years of no federal execution. The halt was issued in July 2021, so federal executions have been halted for almost a year [4]. As of now, it is up to the Justice Department to decide if they would like to lift the prohibition of capital punishment and order the execution of Gendron. Garland, the one who initially pushed for this halt on federal execution, did not rule out the chance of capital punishment: “The Justice Department has a series of procedures it follows,” he said during a news conference in Buffalo. He added that the families of victims and survivors of the shooting, some of whom he visited on his trip to the city, ‘would be consulted’” [3].
Even more disturbing information about the shooting and the shooter have come to light since the devastating day. The gunman, as already known, had planned the shooting, and was attempting to kill as many Black people as possible. Gendron had even allegedly apologized to a white man in the supermarket during the shooting [5]. Gendron visited the specific supermarket the day before the shooting, but also had also visited on March 8 with a receipt for a candy bar and some sketches to prove it: “He then ‘created two sketches of the interior layout’ of the supermarket and counted the number of Black people inside and outside the store” [3].
Continuing, in addition to the hateful rant posted on Discord before the shooting, it has also been found out that on Discord Gendron wrote several private posts which became public right before the attack. These private posts were blatantly racist and explained about what he was going to do in Buffalo.
Recently, an affidavit along with a criminal complaint was filed only supporting these presumed motives [7]. F.B.I. agent Christopher J. Dlugokinski, in these files, said the gunman’s motive was “to prevent Black people from replacing white people and eliminating the white race, and to inspire others to commit similar attacks” [3]. These types of beliefs mirror the replacement theory of which Gendron has been believed to be a supporter of.
Not only that, but when the FBI searched his house, in his room they found a note apologizing to his family for “this attack” and that he was compelled to violence “because he cares ‘for the future of the white race’” [5].
Clearly, since the shooting, there has been a great deal of evidence that only further illustrates Gendron’s guilt. The U.S. Marshal now has custody of Gendron and he had been set to be arraigned for new federal charges in a U.S. district court in Buffalo this past Thursday morning the 16th [5]. As of now, people await the fate of Gendron. The F.B.I. currently is still investigating the case to find out if anyone else was involved in order to administer justice, but also prevent something as terrible from happening.
Since 2022 began, there have been 267 mass shootings [5]. On a grander scale, the state of New York has taken measures since the shooting in Buffalo along with the shooting in Uvalde, Texas to change gun policies. New laws have been passed further restricting gun ownership, like making the minimum age to buy a semiautomatic rifle in New York 21. The main point here, as stated by the Justice Department, is to fight against white supremacy. The shooting in Buffalo was not a single act, as Gendron intended to inspire others and there are others like him who may commit similar, appalling acts [3].

Coastal taipan
Coastal taipan
The coastal taipan (Oxyuranus scutellatus), or common taipan, is a species of large, highly venomous snake of the family Elapidae. It is native to the coastal regions of northern and eastern Australia and the island of New Guinea. According to most toxicological studies, this species is the third-most venomous land snake in the world based on its murine LD50.
Physical description
A coastal taipan. Coastal taipans are large snakes. It is the largest venomous snake in Australia. Adult specimens of this species typically attains sexual maturity around 1.2 m (3.9 ft) in total length (body + tail). More mature specimens can grow to between 1.5 and 2.0 m (4.9 and 6.6 ft). Other taipans, including the inland taipan, attain broadly similar sizes although they tend to be slightly smaller in average size. A specimen of an average 2 m (6.6 ft) total length weighs around 3 kg (6.6 lb). According to the Queensland Museum, the longest recorded total length for the coastal taipan was a specimen that was 2.9 m (9.5 ft) and weighed 6.5 kg (14 lb). However, though exceptionally rare, much larger specimens are widely believed to exist, including specimens of as much as 3.3 m (11 ft). The taipan is exceeded in length among venomous snakes only by the Asiatic king cobra, African black mamba and genus Lachesis (bushmasters) of the American neotropics. The head of this species is long and narrow like that of the African black mamba (but without the "coffin" shape). In fact, in several aspects of morphology, ecology and behaviour, the coastal taipan is strongly convergent with the black mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis). It has an angular brow and is lighter coloured on the face. The body is slender and colouration can vary. They are often uniformly light olive or reddish-brown in colour, but some specimens may be dark gray to black. The colouration is lighter on the sides of the body, and the ventral side (the belly) is usually a creamy-white to a pale light yellow in colour, and is often marked with orange or pink flecks. Individuals undergo a seasonal change in colour, becoming darker in winter and fading in summer. The eyes are large, round, and are light brown or even hazel in colour with large pupils. Dorsal scales at mid-body number 21–23, ventrals 220–250, subcaudals 45–80; the subcaudals are divided, and the anal plate is single, temporals 2+3 (3+4).
Distribution and habitat
Coastal taipans occur only in Australia and the island of New Guinea, which comprises two Indonesian provinces on the west side of the island and the nation of Papua New Guinea on the east side of the island. Found in northern and eastern Australia, the coastal taipan snake, despite its name, can live in habitats hundreds of kilometres away from the nearest beach. There range extends from north-western Western Australia, the Northern Territory, across Cape York Peninsula and down eastern Queensland into northern New South Wales (as far south as Grafton). However, the coastal taipan is not found in regions where the maximum winter temperature is below 20 °C (68 °F). The second subspecies (Oxyuranus scutellatus canni) is found throughout the island of New Guinea, with higher concentrations of the snake being found in the nation of Papua New Guinea. Coastal taipans can be found in a variety of different habitats. They can be found in warm, wetter temperate to tropical coastal regions, in monsoon forests, wet and dry sclerophyll forests and woodlands, and in natural and artificial grassy areas, including grazing paddocks, and disused rubbish tips. In Queensland, they have adapted well to sugarcane fields, where they thrive on the rodent population in the fields. In Far North Queensland in the Cape York Peninsula, they are usually found in open woodland areas. Thickets of introduced lantana are also favoured habitat. The coastal taipan shelters in abandoned animal burrows, hollow logs and in piles of vegetation and litter.
Behavior and diet
The coastal taipan is primarily diurnal, being mostly active in the early to mid-morning period, although it may become nocturnal in hot weather conditions. When hunting, it appears to actively scan for prey using its well-developed eyesight, and is often seen traveling with its head raised slightly above ground level. Once prey is detected, the snake ‘freezes’ before hurling itself forward and issuing several quick bites. The prey is released and allowed to stagger away. This strategy minimizes the snake’s chance of being harmed in retaliation, particularly by rats, which can inflict lethal damage with their long incisors and claws. It is not a confrontational snake and will seek to escape any threat. When cornered, though, it can become very aggressive and may strike repeatedly. The coastal taipan feeds solely on warm-blooded animals such as mammals and birds and their diet consists entirely of rats, mice, bandicoots and various species of birds.
Venom
This snake is the world's third-most venomous snake. The SC LD50 value of this species is 0.106 mg/kg, according to Australian Venom and Toxin database, and 0.12 mg/kg, according to Engelmann and Obst (1981). The average venom yield per bite is 120 mg, with a maximum record of 400 mg. Its venom contains primarily taicatoxin, a highly potent neurotoxin affecting the nervous system and the blood’s ability to clot. Bite victims may experience headache, nausea/vomiting, collapse, convulsions, paralysis, internal bleeding, myolysis (destruction of muscle tissue), and kidney damage. In case of severe envenomation, death can occur as early as 30 minutes after being bitten, but the average is around 2.5 hours. The time between a bite and death depends on various factors such as the nature of the bite and the constitution of the victim. Untreated bites have a mortality rate of 100% as the coastal taipan always delivers a fatal dose of venom, and medical professionals recommend that victims seek immediate medical attention even for apparently minor bites. Before the introduction of specific antivenom by the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories in 1956, nearly all bites were fatal.

Racially Motivated’ – Buffalo Shooting Leaves 10 Victims Killed And 3 Injured
By Maeve Morley, State University of New York at Geneseo, Class of 2022
May 19, 2022
Tumblr media
On Saturday, May 14th, 18-year-old Payton S. Gendron entered a Tops Supermarket in Masten Park on Buffalo’s East Side and opened fire [1]. 10 people were killed and 3 injured in his wake [1]. Almost all of his victims were Black, in which his attack “methodical” and “racial motivated” [1].
Mr. Gendron of Conklin had driven more than 200 miles to launch his planned attack which was livestreamed by a camera attached to his helmet. Upon his arrest, “a manifesto believed to have been posted online by [him] emerged, riddled with racist, anti-immigrant views that claimed white Americans were at risk of being replaced by people of color” [1].
Mr. Gendron’s “savagery and planning were evident” [1]. Decked out in body armor and an assault weapon, the attacker shot 11 Black people; 2 of them were white [1]. In the manifesto, currently in review by law enforcement, Mr. Gendron “wrote that he had selected the area because it held the largest percentage of Black residents near his home in the state’s Southern Tier, a predominantly white region that borders Pennsylvania” [1]. The Erie County sheriff, John Garcia said “It was a straight up racially motivated hate crime” [1]. Buffalo Native, Gov. Kathy Hochul said it was an “act of barbarism” and an “execution of innocent human beings” [1]. “It strikes us in our very hearts to know that there is such evil that lurks out there” Hochul said [1].
In his manifesto, Mr. Gendron “wrote he had been ‘passively preparing’ for the Buffalo attack for several years, purchasing ammunition and gear, while infrequently practicing shooting” [1]. He had “outlined a careful plan to kill as many Black people as possible, complete with the type of gun he would use, a timeline, and where he would eat beforehand” [1].
An arraignment was held for Mr. Gendron on Saturday evening. He “pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, a charge that could lead to life imprisonment without parole” [1]. On Wednesday, New York Attorney General Letitia James announced that “her office will be launching an investigation into the social media channels used by the Buffalo shooting suspect to ‘plan, promote, and stream’ his attack’” [2]. One of these social media platforms include Discord [2]. Gov. Hochul said she “issued a referral to James to investigate [these] social platforms” [2]. “The referral will allow James to ‘subpoena witnesses and compel the production of documents’ in an effort to investigate matters of public safety” [2]. “Social media platforms must take responsibility and be held accountable for favoring engagement over public safety” Hochul said [2].
President Joe Biden visited Buffalo on Tuesday. On his visit, he “told reporters that he would redouble his efforts ‘to convince Congress’ to enact new gun control measure” [3]. “We’ve done it before” he said, “referring to the 1994 assault weapons ban that slowed their spread before it lapsed in 2004” [3]. Mr. Gendron had legally obtained his weapon – an AR-15 style rifle – from a New York guns store, “despite being hospitalized last year for making a murder-suicide threat” [3]. He “had been briefly hospitalized last spring after a teacher reported to school administrators that he’d written about wanting to carry out a shooting” [3]. However, “since he was not involuntarily committed to an institution, his name was not added to any gun prohibition, or red flag list” [3]. Sheriff John Garcia said “In a case like this the gun dealer was able to sell these weapons to this individual because there were no red flags that came up” [3]. Robert Donald, the owner of Vintage Firearms “had sold Gendron a Bushmaster rifle” [3]. “He didn’t stand out” Mr. Donald told the New York Times, “because if he did, I would’ve never sold him the gun” [3].
