just saw someone calling out CR for blocking someone who had been harassing them for weeks to make a post about Palestine.
how is that our business + outrage who they block for harassing them?
what kind of parasocial relationship is it that everyone’s fave creators HAVE to take a strong stance publicly on their creator page?
i didnt see this kind of push for every single creator/person to denounce a country during the beginning of the effective genocide of Ukranians.
CR has nothing to do with the conflict and frankly it’s OK not to have a strong public opinion! What happened to “I’m not well enough informed about X and so I’m going to stay out of a discussion?” I’d much rather they not engage than force them to make a statement because we believe we’re owed.
We don’t know them. And frankly, humans aren’t equipped to handle dealing with every of Earth’s tragedies (or the online fallout for any possible stance they could take)

For nearly two decades at the Grand Canyon, tourists, employees, and children on tours passed by three paint buckets stored in the National Park's museum collection building, unaware that they were being exposed to radiation.
Although federal officials learned last year that the 5-gallon containers were brimming with uranium ore, then removed the radioactive specimens, the park's safety director alleges nothing was done to warn park workers or the public that they might have been exposed to unsafe levels of radiation.
In a rogue email sent to all Park Service employees on Feb. 4, Elston "Swede" Stephenson — the safety, health and wellness manager — described the alleged cover-up as "a top management failure" and warned of possible health consequences.
"If you were in the Museum Collections Building (2C) between the year 2000 and June 18, 2018, you were 'exposed' to uranium by OSHA's definition," Stephenson wrote. "The radiation readings, at first blush, exceeds (sic) the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's safe limits. … Identifying who was exposed, and your exposure level, gets tricky and is our next important task."
In a Feb. 11 email to Acting Interior Secretary David Bernhardt and Deputy Inspector General Mary Kendall, Stephenson said he had repeatedly asked National Park executives to inform the public, only to get stonewalled.
"Respectfully, it was not only immoral not to let Our People know," he added, "but I could not longer risk my (health and safety) certification by letting this go any longer."
According to Stephenson, the uranium specimens had been in a basement at park headquarters for decades and were moved to the museum building when it opened, around 2000.
RELATED: Understanding radiation: 6 key things to know about public exposure
One of the buckets was so full that its lid would not close.
Stephenson said the containers were stored next to a taxidermy exhibit, where children on tours sometimes stopped for presentations, sitting next to uranium for 30 minutes or more. By his calculation, those children could have received radiation dosages in excess of federal safety standards within three seconds, and adults could have suffered dangerous exposure in less than a half-minute.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission measures radiation contamination in millisieverts per hour or per year. According to Stephenson, close exposures to the uranium buckets could have exposed adults to 400 times the health limit — and children to 4,000 times what is considered safe.
Emily Davis, a public affairs specialist at the Grand Canyon, said the Park Service is coordinating an investigation with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Arizona Department of Health Services.
Davis stressed that a recent review of the building in question uncovered only background radiation, which is natural in the area and is safe.
"There is no current risk to the park employees or public," Davis said. "The building is open. … The information I have is that the rocks were removed, and there's no danger."
Davis declined to address Stephenson's assertion that thousands of people may have been exposed to dangerous levels of radiation, or his allegation that the Park Service violated the law by not issuing a public warning.
"We do take our public and employee safety and allegations seriously," she said.
Clean-up with dish-washing gloves?
Reached by phone at the South Rim, Stephenson said his only concern is the safety of everyone who spent time in a danger zone, and he alerted them only after failing for eight months to get park officials to act.
"I've never seen anything like this in my life," he said.
Stephenson said the uranium threat was discovered in March 2018 by the teenage son of a park employee who happened to be a Geiger counter enthusiast, and brought a device to the museum collection room.
Workers immediately moved the buckets to another location in the building, he said, but nothing else was done.
A few months later, Stephenson said, he was assisting with a safety audit when employees told him about the uranium. As a former Army helicopter pilot who later worked as a safety manager in the Navy, Stephenson said he knew it was "bad mojo" and instantly called a National Parks specialist in Colorado.
Stephenson said specialists apparently had no Geiger counter, so they drove to Utah to pick up a Ludlum meter, which also measures radiation output.
The technicians reached the Grand Canyon several days after his call, on June 18. Lacking protective clothing, they purchased dish-washing and gardening gloves, then used a broken mop handle to lift the buckets into a truck, Stephenson said.
Those details are corroborated by photographs Stephenson included in a 45-page slideshow created to document the radiation exposure and alleged cover-up.
Stephenson said technicians concealed the radiation readings from him and dumped the ore into Orphan Mine, an old uranium dig that is considered a potential Superfund site below the Rim, about two miles from Grand Canyon Village.
Stephenson said he drove to Phoenix in November and filed a report with OSHA, which sent inspectors to the museum building in yellow protective suits.
Stephenson said they detected a low-level site within the building and traced it to the three buckets, which Park Service technicians had inexplicably returned to the building after dumping their contents.
"You could hear their meters going off," Stephenson said.
Davis, the Park Service spokeswoman, declined comment on those details.
A spokesman for OSHA confirmed an investigation is underway, but declined to provide any other information.
A 'secrecy pact'?
Stephenson, a military veteran who is certified as an occupational safety and health technician, was in a similar controversy during his time in the Navy. According to court records, he began calling for action to prevent falls after a series of accidents in 2016.
As complaints escalated, Stephenson was fired. He turned to the Office of Special Counsel, a federal agency that protects whistleblowers, and his termination was stayed. It is unclear how that case was resolved, but within months, Stephenson had a new job with the National Park Service.
Stephenson said the uranium exposure saga developed while he was pursuing a racial-discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity office. Stephenson is African-American.
He said high-level officials in the Park Service developed a "secrecy pact" to conceal radiation exposure data despite his insistence that a "Right to Know" law mandates public disclosure.
"My first interest is the safety of the workers and the people," he added.
Stephenson eventually obtained a report submitted by the Park Service's regional safety manager, confirming the area was "positive for radioactivity above background" and showing high levels near the taxidermy area.
The report indicated radiation levels at "13.9 mR/hr" where the buckets were stored, and "800 mR/hr" on contact with the ore. Just 5 feet from the buckets, there was a zero reading. The abbreviation, "mR" typically stands for milliroentgen, a measurement roughly equivalent to a millirem, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
The NRC says average radiation exposure in the United States from natural sources is 300 millirems per year at sea level, or 400 at high altitude.
The commission lists a maximum safe dosage for the public, beyond natural radiation, is no more than 2 millirems per hour, or 100 per year.
The report's recommendations did not call for public notification, but suggested guidelines for handling and storing geology samples in the future.
Stephenson calculated potential exposures over 1,400 times the NRC's safe level for children, and over 140 times the safe level for adults.
He said he pressed park superintendents to take action, submitted an Inspector General complaint, contacted the FBI, and wrote to every member of Congress.
In his letter to colleagues, Stephenson apologized for the untimely notice. He stressed that exposure may not be severe depending on how close individuals got to the source, how long they were exposed, what they were wearing, and other factors. He also emphasized that employees will not necessarily suffer health consequences, but should consider receiving a medical screening.
"Of particular concern are 1000s of children attending 'shows' in very close proximity to the uranium," he wrote. Those presentations lasted a half hour or more, he said, yet radiation dosages could have exceeded federal safety standards within seconds.
Stephenson said he's heard nothing from superiors at the Park Service since he sent the warning letter.
"They're in cover-up mode," he said. "I've been cut off from any kind of information."
(via Grand Canyon tourists exposed to radiation, safety manager says)
Since the news broke that three buckets of uranium ore sat in a Grand Canyon museum for years, alarm has been spreading about the radiation “cover-up.” But it’s tough to figure out exactly how dangerous the uranium truly was to visitors and staff.
The buckets had been sitting next to a taxidermy exhibit at the National Park Service’s Grand Canyon Museum Collection, a location where groups of schoolchildren stopped on tours, according to The Arizona Republic. After a visitor with a Geiger counter discovered them, they were moved to a hallway, and eventually their contents were dumped in an old uranium mine, whistleblower Elston “Swede” Stephenson told The Arizona Republic. Stephenson did not reply to a message on LinkedIn; the museum told The Verge to contact Emily Davis at the National Park Service, and Davis did not respond to emailed or phone inquiries.
Uranium ore is a naturally occurring rock with a high concentration of uranium, which gives off a mixture of different types of radiation. Uranium can also break down into other radioactive materials, like radium — and it can release the noble gas radon, which can cause lung cancer in large concentrations. That people, especially children, could have been unknowingly exposed to radiation is worrying, because radiation can damage DNA. “If that damage isn’t repaired correctly, then you potentially set the stage for cancer,” says Kathryn Higley, head of the School of Nuclear Science and Engineering at Oregon State University. The Republic reported that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration had opened an investigation into the situation.
There’s no reason buckets of ore should have been hanging around without anyone’s knowledge, and apparently without a radiation label on them, Higley says. “People should have been more mindful of them,” she says. But the question is whether three buckets of ore produced enough radiation — and if people were close enough to them for long enough — to suffer health consequences. The Arizona Republic’s story also cites a report by a National Park Service safety manager that said radioactivity was measured in the ore and “where the buckets were stored.” But the radiation dropped to zero five feet away. Based on that information, Higley says, “The likelihood of people receiving serious radiation exposures is extremely unlikely.”
The Verge spoke with Higley about uranium, cancer, and what uranium ore might be doing in a bucket.
This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.
Please tell me all your thoughts about the uranium ore in a bucket.
Without knowing exactly how it was stored, looking at some of the measurements that were taken, the radiation readings certainly are above what you’d consider the normal background. But the likelihood of people receiving serious radiation exposures is extremely unlikely. People work around uranium in the process of manufacturing fuel, for example. But also I’m looking here on the radiation levels taken by some park personnel, and it says five feet from the bucket is basically a zero reading.
So you see the dose rate drops off really, really quickly as you move away from the source. It’s a combination of dose rate and the length of time that they would’ve been exposed to it. And they’re not going to be hugging this thing and lugging it around for extended periods of time. I’m not seeing a health risk. I’m seeing people being sloppy and did some things that they really shouldn’t have done. And they’re probably going to get a nasty note from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, like “Why do you have this in a closet? What are you doing with it?”
How hazardous is uranium ore? Can it give you cancer?
It’s a complicated answer, because we know at a high enough dose that you have an increased risk of getting cancer, but in the low environmental ranges, there’s not a strong relationship between dose and emergence of cancer. We’ve looked at data from people that mined uranium in the past. They went down into the mines and just like coal mining, they would dig it out and ship it off for processing. There has been a relationship of those miners getting lung cancer, because they were inhaling some of the radioactive gas that was coming off. Also, a large number of them happened to be smokers at the time, too — so there was kind of a double whammy in terms of them getting cancer.
We know that prolonged exposure to one of the decay products of uranium or radon gas in high concentrations increases your chance of getting cancer. But three buckets of ore sitting in a basement or in a closet is a lot different than somebody going down into a mine and working for 30 years mining uranium ore. It’s not just the dose rate, but it’s the total dosage you get is what determines your risk.
Why is the ore less worrying than, say, if there had been three buckets of spent fuel?
It’s like having a little, tiny warm rock sitting in a bucket in your living room versus having a massive slug of molten metal in your living room. I mean, one is like, “Oh, yeah, okay. I can feel it. It’s a little warm.” And the other one’s like, “Holy crap, it’s going to destroy my house.”
“HOLY CRAP, IT’S GOING TO DESTROY MY HOUSE.”
With nuclear fuel, the uranium is fissioned. So it’s put into a reactor and it’s bombarded with neutrons and the elements actually split into pieces and the pieces, the fissioned products, are extremely radioactive. And so not only is that fuel, depending on how fresh it is, thermally really, really warm. But it is emitting a lot of radiation — way, way more than this ore would. Particularly if the fuel is reasonably fresh out of a reactor, for example. And so the radiation field around it would be extremely dangerous. And if you had a fuel rod, depending on the type of fuel, it’ll probably kill you if you stood by it for even a brief period of time. This ore will not do that. So that’s the difference — the concentration of radiation coming off of it.
Why would someone keep uranium ore around in a bucket?
There are some uranium sites around the Grand Canyon. There’s some mining activity. If they were teaching geologists, it could be to show “here’s what uranium ore looks like.” You could use it as a tool, to say here’s what kind of radiation count rates you’re going to see if you find this kind of grade ore. Or they may have brought it in if the museum was associated with a lab and they wanted to do an assay to see what the concentration of uranium was, because all the detector would do is give you a rough indication of the quality of the ore. There’s a lot of reasons why there might be ore in a bucket that somebody then forgot about and set in a closet.
“IT’S A LEGITIMATE TEACHING TOOL. IT REALLY IS.”
Ore in a drum was part of a teaching tool when I was getting my master’s and my doctorate in radiological health sciences. We wanted to understand how radon was produced and how you measured the activity concentrations of radon, and in order to do that, you need a source. The cheapest source is to get a 55 gallon drum and have some uranium ore in there and you let it decay and the drum is sealed and the radon can build up and you can actually pull off some of the radon and do measurements with it. It was in an area where they could control air flow. For that particular situation, you’re concerned about inhaling really high concentrations of radon gas. It’s a legitimate teaching tool. It really is.
What’s the route of exposure — is the concern being in very close proximity to it and touching it? Is the concern eating particles? Is the concern inhaling the gas, or dust?
It’s not something that in small quantities is going to kill you. You’d have a small increase of cancer risk. There’s natural uranium outcroppings all over the United States — for example, where the Navajo Nation is. A lot of the Navajo worked in the mines. Some of the rock that wasn’t good enough quality to ship off for processing could be used in building structures. They’ve had issues where families would build hogans out of rock that had elevated levels of uranium, and that would then result in elevated levels of radon in the homes. And so the EPA has been working with the Navajo Nation Environmental Protection Agency to actually identify homes and areas that have elevated uranium and radon concentrations and remediate homes and get them in safer building structures. But again, it’s a much larger quantity than three buckets sitting in a closet or in a back room.
What about the risk from radon gas? How long does the radon stick around?
Radon has roughly a three-day half life. It’ll diffuse out of the buckets into the room, but if the room is ventilated, then the concentration drops and it’s not really a large issue. If you have it in a room that has really crummy ventilation and then potentially you could have an elevated radon level that exists. And so again, that would be something that people would take a look at and say, “Okay, is this in a closed space where folks would be sitting for prolonged periods of time? What is their potential risk over the long-term from inhaling any radon that’s coming off of that?” It’d be an elevated risk of lung cancer, and again, it takes a pretty large dose to get to a level where we can actually see evidence of cancer causation in populations.
What sort of cleanup would make the museum 100 percent safe?
“TAKE THE BUCKETS OUT.”
Take the buckets out. Say one of the bucket’s lids didn’t close: take a survey and make sure you don’t have little particles of soil that have dropped out. You remove it from the museum, there’s no hazard there. You move it back to the natural environment, and there might be an elevated level in the environment. But again, unless you build your house on top of the ore body and you live there 100 percent of the time, you’re going to be fine walking around.

Some call him the Bill Gates of the crypto industry, but I personally think he is not just pushing forward our industry but transforming deeply rooted economic and social culture. He fills concert halls talking about the importance of decentralization and the freedom of money. He finds time to organize dinners for journalists, introducing them to the empire he built before briskly leaving for another meeting with his team. He is idolized by his colleagues, respected by his competitors, and radiates positive energy when you meet him.
In the 2019 bear market, he managed to keep Binance’s position as one of the leading crypto exchanges by launching its first initial exchange offering in January, developing its native blockchain Binance Chain, running a decentralized trading platform, launching a United States trading desk, and keeping it competitive with Binance’s futures trading platform — to cite just a few developments.
So, when the time came to make a choice for the winner of Cointelegraph’s first-ever Top 100 list, Changpeng Zhao’s selection was a unanimous decision among our editors.
I had the wonderful opportunity to spend an hour with CZ on the eve of Valentine’s Day — a holiday he would spend with his true love: his work — to talk a bit about himself and his plans (with the next major move being the launch of Binance Cloud, exclusive details on which will be revealed very soon).
[embedded content]
Keep everything simple and work hard
Upon learning that he was selected for the top spot on the list and being asked about his favorite accomplishments in 2019, he was characteristically humble: “Other than just putting together a really good team and then leading them forward, I personally didn’t really do that much. But the team did a lot of really hard work.”
2019 was certainly a year full of initiatives and product launches, all of which received CZ’s thorough participation. Within the next couple of years, though, he plans to build up a “more unneeded situation” for himself, so that nothing depends too much on him. After that, he shared, he can probably relax and spend more time traveling the world, breaking the limits of the mode “airport–hotel–back to airport–kind of gone.”
It is hard to believe he will one day do less than he does now, as he is such a maximalist when it comes to work. He is known, however, as being rather minimalistic in his personal life. No big houses, no yachts, not even a business suit. Neither did he celebrate the last new year, explaining that he stayed home because “it is just another day.”
“I’m not materialistic because it’s kind of hard to carry anything that’s physical. I like to keep mobile. I like to be able to live in a different city every month if I want to. And with a shared economy, it’s so much easier now. So we don’t need a car — you have Uber everywhere. You have Airbnb, so I don’t need to buy a house. I don’t feel the need to own a lot of stuff, to have a really complicated life. Just keep everything simple.”
When was the last time you did something for the first time?
“There’s got to be a few recently, actually [with enthusiasm] I can’t remember what they are, but there’s got to be a couple of first times [starts thinking deeply] recently. [long pause] I actually can’t remember that much, to be honest.”
I asked CZ whether he likes being famous and what the biggest challenge to being a person in the public eye is. If he had a choice, he promptly responded, he would prefer not to be famous. But Binance had to have a public face in order to raise money and continue to grow. It is also very important, according to CZ, to have a public face to establish trust with customers who entrust their funds to Binance’s custody. “I know we’re in an industry that technically we don’t need trust, but there’s still a lot of trust that’s needed in a lot of different places.”
CZ also revealed with a smile that he was forced to be a public face, as other members of the team did not want to go public.
“I was actually hoping there would be a better face, to be honest. I don’t think I’m a very good public speaker. There are also much better-looking people. But unfortunately, for Binance, it’s me. So Binance is kind of stuck with me for now.”
Keep calm and go all-in on Bitcoin
It was in 2013 that CZ began to learn about Bitcoin. He read the white paper and started going to thematic events. Later, at a small conference in Las Vegas, he met some of today’s giants of the industry: Charlie Lee, Matthew Roszak, Vitalik Buterin. There was also a representative of Ripple who taught CZ how to use it. In the process, he transferred some XRP to CZ. When they were done, CZ wanted to transfer the coins back, but heard in response, “You can keep it and you can use it to teach the next guy.” This sparked a wild crypto adventure.
CZ quickly became enthusiastic about the technology: “I thought that community was really nice. I had a really high confidence in Bitcoin succeeding, in cryptocurrency succeeding.”
In 2014, CZ sold his house to go all-in on Bitcoin. Within three months, BTC dropped from $600 to $200, losing him two-thirds of the value of his house for roughly two years before the price went up again. When asked whether he would advise someone to take such a risk, CZ responded more as a wiseman than a poker player: “For different people, that risk appetite and risk situation is different. I would not recommend people who are struggling to pay off mortgages on their house and who need a guaranteed income from their investments to pay off some loan, to sell their house and go all-in on crypto, because crypto is highly volatile.”
You seem such a calm person. Do you meditate, or were you born like this?
“I don’t meditate that much. I tried it. I find it a little bit boring, to be honest. I don’t need it. I’m already very calm. I have a low heart rate. My resting heart rate is like 50-something. In Binance, I’ve never shouted. I’ve never yelled at anybody. I’ve never sort of become really sort of agitated. I’m always a very calm person.”
Not only did he sell the house, he also quit his job. Within two weeks, he managed to find a new one at blockchain.info, where he stayed for five months before joining OKCoin as chief technical officer. There, he spent no more than a year. It was 2017, the year of Binance’s foundation.
Along the way, CZ contributed to a considerable number of startups, many of which failed. He has a tip that helps him stay optimistic, a parable he once heard from someone: “If you walk to the bottom of a valley, what do you do? And the answer is pretty simple: You just keep walking as long as you keep walking. Then you eventually get out of the valley.”
Keep coding and get an MBA
CZ majored in computer science at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. But the last time he was coding something, he said, was a couple of years ago. He has never coded for Binance — all its code is written by others — but he was writing scripts for himself. Now, he admits to not having any time to sit down and stare at a computer screen uninterrupted. It is simply not his current life situation. He called his time very segmented, as he gets interrupted very often.
“I tell other people that now I have a memory of a goldfish, like I can’t remember anything longer than seven seconds.”
When asked for advice to the next generation of founders on whether it is better to get a degree in computer science or a master’s degree in business administration, CZ rejects the premise of the question and says to go for both. His view is that, in this sector and at this capacity, you are forced to deal with everything: technology, business models, business development, deal negotiations, marketing, customer service, compliance, legal, accounting, finance, HR. And guess what? CZ doesn’t consider himself an expert in any of these areas. With my objection to CZ’s claims of being a poor public speaker quickly dismissed earlier, I decided that contesting him at this point would be futile.
Keep being number one and go forward
The first interview with CZ I took part in dates back to 2018. Back then, he told us that Binance tries very hard not to be number one, “because being number one creates other problems sometimes, especially with regulators.” In 2020, I asked whether CZ still agrees with that, or if he’d finally given up on trying not to stand out too much.
CZ admitted that two years ago, the market was riddled with regulatory uncertainty, while today’s situation is much better. “I think today it’s OK to push forward, get the market share, and you will not be the lonely one at the top who all the regulators come for.” He also added that there is more fierce competition on the market today, so it’s become harder for small players to build themselves up.
“But we are still at the early stages. We want to see more exchanges, because right now, all over the world, if you can see more exchanges, we can see more people coming into crypto.”
CZ seems very satisfied with his professional career: “I feel I’m really lucky to have the chance to be doing what we’re doing, which is to increase access to crypto, increase the freedom of money for people around the world. That is something I’m really energetic about doing. And I just feel lucky to be in a position to be able to do that.”
If you could clone yourself, what would you like that clone to do?
“I would love the clone to do other work [laughing]. I’d make a lot of clones to do a lot of work. We can do like ten different interviews at the same time.”
Keep cool, we are living in a simulation
Binance’s current focus on developing the freedom of money is intended to give people funding power to do more research on biotech, space exploration (this field, CZ leaves to Elon Musk) and AI — all of which, according to CZ, will help our species advance significantly. For example, CZ thinks, the Coronavirus issue could be solved once funding on research is sped up.
CZ definitely wants the existing world to get better, but at the same time, he is a big believer of simulation theory. It means that we are living in an artificial, digital simulation that is conceived or orchestrated by a more sophisticated intelligence. It also means, according to CZ, that in 100 or 500 years, the advancement of technology will make the simulation we are living in controllable.
“I believe it’s 99,99999 % we’re living in a simulation. So mathematically it is basically 100 percent.”
“If you look at that Nintendo Super Mario, we can simulate the guy moving forward, moving backwards. The tricky part is I don’t know what kind of simulation we are yet. We see it being simulated by a higher being, a different dimension — or are we just sitting, sleeping there, dreaming similarly about ourselves or our own kind.”
Even though we do not know in which simulation we are living, CZ explained, it does not mean we do not have to take it seriously. On the contrary, even if it’s a full simulation, everything in the simulation still matters. “There’s a Coronavirus that matters, there’s a flooding in places, climate change, all of those things are challenges that are thrown on our way. And we should try our best to help where we can.”
Another positive aspect of believing in simulation is that it helps dealing with difficult situations and stress, it kind of gives you a lighter view on things. “Sometimes you say, ‘Well, you know, it’s just a simulation, it’s just a game.’ My role here is just to do the best I can. So I just keep putting one foot in front of the other and keep marching forward. So it makes life a lot easier, actually.”
Rapid fire questions for CZ
Sea or mountains?
I’d probably choose mountains, but I do like ocean sports as well.
Beer or wine?
Beer.
McDonald’s or Burger King?
Burger King, because at least some of them accept Bitcoin and Binance coin.
Black or yellow?
Black.
Snowboarding or work?
I really enjoy snowboarding, but you can’t snowboard all the time. You can do a couple of days a year, it’s good enough.
Simulation or reality?
Definitely, simulation. There is no reality.

coco’s college story
I just need to vent and get things off my chest. this is going to be quite long, and I’m going to add more to this, but we’re starting a new segment on this blog called #coco’s college story. I’m going to get personal and real and you don’t have to read, but I just need to write it all out. feel free to come talk if you feel inclined to. and since this will be long, I’ll put it under the cut. lets hope everything is spelled right...
college really sucks sometimes. I’m really stressed out from it and I have no idea what to do or what I am doing.
I’m going to start at the beginning, or try to at least. which, brings me to grade 11. I think this is really where it started. everyone was starting to take the ACT/SAT (American standardized tests required for most college admittance) and I hadn’t even begun to think where I truly wanted to go for college. yet some kids in my class had already started applying wtf. all I thought I knew was that a. I wanted to go out of state and b. I wanted to go far from home and c. I wanted to be a doctor.
summer of 2016 (summer after I finished 11th grade) I was in Virginia visiting my best friend Autumn (she plays a huge role in this). Autumn is 6 months older than me and would be at this time starting her first semester at GMU in the fall of 2016. so she asked me where I wanted to go to school. my reply? “haha that’s a great question!!! I have no fucking clue.” (literally word for word) and she was like “apply to GMU!!!” and I was like, “dude, Noah fence but you’re going there to be a hISTORY major and I literally slept thru that class for all of middle and high school. nah fam” and she’s like “yeah, but they have a great science program and then you can go to Hopkins after.” so I was like ok maybe. so I did what everyone does best: listed my pros and cons
pros:
going to school w/ bff since age 3
1,025 miles from home and from my mother*
good science program so I can be a dr??
location wise: gr8 bc autumn’s fam lived 2hrs north and my stepsister (who I’m close with) lived 2hrs NE and its a 2hr plane ride home to florida
cons:
is hella expensive**
1,025 miles from home
current number of people I know going to this school: 1 (and pls note: I hate doing things alone even tho I love to be alone. idk how to explain this but like like I enjoy being alone but I don’t like being alone. I know some of y’all understand this?)
leaving friends I have in florida
tbh, the pros outweighed the cons and I applied to GMU and I was accepted. (I applied to other schools and got accepted to one and denied at another because they closed the program I was applying for but I can assure u had they not, I would’ve gotten accepted)anyway, I took my ACT in October of 2016 and got accepted to gmu in December of 2016. I think that’s really when the stress started kicking in, because while I was happy to be accepted to my dream school, I had a lot of emotions I wasn’t ready for and then later on experienced them.
2017 started off decently. I went into the second semester of senior year knowing I was accepted and 100% planning on going to my dream school, ready for a new future, ready to leave Florida, excited about going to Italy that march with my class etc…
but it also brought hard times because I ended my friendship with one of my best friends in the whole world: olivia. we were inseparable and had been for 8 years and knew each other for 13 years. it was seriously really hard, especially because not only was I close to her, I was close with her mom, little brother, big sister, niece and nephews. it really sucked.
and, I had the daunting task of telling my mother I was going to Virginia for college.
now, as some of you may know, my relationship with my mother is very strained. and whenever I refer to my “parents” on Tumblr, I’m talking about my dad and stepmom, because I always refer to my mom (as mother) separately. and add to the fact, my mother flipped out on autumn’s mom a few years ago and told them to never speak to me again. so, since I was 12 years old, my mom has had no idea I’ve kept in touch with autumn and still has no idea I go to school with autumn. (my dad and stepmom love her family and her and see no problem with them same as me and she’s my best friend and my mother has issues we will not be addressing rn) anyway, so I didn’t tell my mother I got accepted to GMU until April of 2017. (mind you, I found out mid-december and my dad found out when I got the email because I made Claudia stop the car before we headed to a Christmas party lol) and so I told my mom in April that I was going to GMU and she asked me if autumn went there and I lied right thru my teeth and told her I had no fucking clue because we weren’t friends, remember? and that was one big thing that really started the stressing because a. I didn’t have olivia there as my bff to help me thru the stressful time, and b. I so badly wanted my mother to be happy for me but I knew deep down she really wasn’t because she also flipped out a bit and was like “wtf ur going to college? u leave in august?” and I was like yeah, what did you expect me to do?” and honestly, she was angry about it, but I was an adult, its my life and she had no say in where or whether or not I was going to college.
so, fast forward to college. idk how chronological this will be so we’re just going to list some stressors I’ve had with college.
it’s 1,025 miles away from home
I grew up in a town in Florida, in the same neighborhood I was brought home from the hospital in (I almost said same house, but I moved down the street long story…) I went to a preschool from ages 2-4 and then started elementary and middle school ages 5-13 at one school and then half of my eight grade class went to my high school. and I was there for four years. these people were family. out of the 7 people who went to high school with me, 4 I knew since kindergarten, one I knew since fifth grade and the other since sixth and the last one was me. and I made two friends (chelsey and Claudia) in ninth grade who are my sisters. I love them both so much. I would talk thru fire for them (and autumn, Robyn and belle ofc but we’re talking about my friends at home) anyway, I grew up there. Florida is my home. I like small places. I lived in a kinda small city in my two bedroom condo with my parents and doggo and I had neighbors who I’d known most of my life. my whole family was in Florida basically, minus my aunt (dad’s sister who we visit in NY or she’d visit us).
I was leaving my friends
I went from seeing Claudia every day in school, and once every two weeks during the summer or a few times a week because of our movie dates lol, and chelsey who graduated the year before me and lived an hour away from me at home, made it a point to still come to my school to see me and sleep over at my house, and then during the summer she came over once a week and stayed over. I saw them all the time. we’re three peas in a pod. I saw them a lot. and I only have 5 really close friends. friends I would walk thru fire for, and trust with my life. mentioned above: Claudia, chelsey, autumn, Robyn and belle. and we all have different relationships. autumn moved away when I was 11 and I coped with that in middle school (another dark time in my life) and I learned to live with that. Robyn and belle I met over Tumblr, so I’d never entertained the prospect of seeing them regularly. (tho Robyn and I have kinda made a pact of visiting each other during the summer and thus every other summer I get to see belle when Its my turn to visit Canada) but chelsey and claudia? I saw them a lot, and I hadn’t had to cope with a friend, who I saw a lot and was inseparable with, be away from me for a huge long period of time in a long time (age 11). and to add to the fact, both chelsey and Claude go to school at home and they became close with my family too so like idk it all just kinda fell apart
I get really homesick/leaving my parents and dog
this one wasn’t as bad solely because, I left home august 2nd. I was traveling by myself most of this month. I saw my parents at the end of the month when they held me move in for college. then, I got a surprise visit from them and my doggo in September because they drove up to my sister’s house 2 hrs from my school to escape the hurricane that was to hit Florida (bless, my house was fine). then I saw them again in October, because my sister got married!!! and thanksgiving I saw them again, November, because ofc its thanksgiving ill see them, even though it flew by. and now here, its December and I’m going home for a month. so I’ll see them thru January. and then lbr, because my dad works in Maryland a lot, he’s probably gong to be up north most of 2018 too and he vowed to visit me when he could because he’s a mush and misses his kid even if he denies it. also, the homesickness; I don’t like being away from people/be by myself in a house for an extended period of time, but I kinda built up my tolerance because my dad travels a lot and I have speration anxiety from it (he travelled all my life and I was left with my mother for a lot of it so stress but I built up a tolerance for it when I was like 15 and my homesickness started getting better from then on out) and like I did really well when I spent 8 days in Italy without my parents etc which I only had 1 tiny little freak out and Claudia helped me thru it and was proud at the fact that I only had one like 2 days in to the trip and was fine after that.
my life plan
holy f u c k. ever hear the saying like “you plan and god laughs”? well, holy fuck, it can’t be more true. I don’t care what god or thing you believe in, its fucking true. I’m a planner. not a detailed one, but its a rough outline, I have a plan of my life, roughly outlined; its got a few bullet points mainly looking like this:
my life:
go to college out of state
make money
be a doctor in the nicu
be a mom/foster/adopt kids
own lotsa pets
have enough money to build my own house
were going to focus on the “be a doctor” point. because this is where everything got fucked.
since I was five years old, five. I wanted to be a doctor. since that age, I narrowed down the specifics and specialty etc. I picked out what school I wanted to go to for medical school and whatnot. I’ve wanted to be a doctor since I was five fucking years old.
college has since changed that plan...
about a month into school this semester, I changed my major of–––biology degree> medical school> be a doctor to uh, now I’m currently in the pre-nursing (BsN) program at my college (and I’m minoring in photography, but that I knew about and hasn’t changed). I remember this day very clearly when I decided. it was a Monday. idk the date, but it was Monday and I was sitting in the JC (the main campus building) with autumn eating food and I was like “I’m having a crisis and I want to change my major to nursing” and so then I called my dad and told him I was going to do it. thankfully my while family was very supportive (minus my mother I have not talked to her since September[?]***)
so that happened, and threw me for a loop.
college is just extremely different in general.
I really don’t even know how else to categorize this. so here are just random things.
professors are weird. all of them. no matter their age: which this ranges too because I have some that are like two coughs away from dying and others who are literally only like 5 years older than me… fucking weird.
your syllabus is your fucking roadmap. don’t fucking lose it.
nothing ever gets graded at a decent time. I literally got two papers back without grades on them and they aren’t online either but the prof said that they’re recorded in the gradebook he has so like????
I grew up going to private christian schools since I was 2… which means no cussing in class and wearing a uniform and your parents drive you to school, we don’t have busses.
college: no dress code. I wore pj’s (with jack skellington on them) to class and Christmas and halloween printed leggings and hoodies with just a bra underneath and fucking whatever the hell I wanted to class, strapless/sleeveless dresses, whatever. my professors cusses in classes/lectures. I was taken back by this at first. but thoroughly loved the chillness and laid-backness that classes had tho because I could say whatever I wanted (vulgarity wise). and I now blame my worsening swearing habit on college because I’m not in christian private school or nannying 3x a week anymore so I haven’t needed to curb my language… walking…everywhere… I live on campus in a dorm without a car (autumn has one but we really only use it to run errands on Fridays) and damn that was a shock. because while yes, I lived in a smallish city and there was a Walmart and dollar store close to my house to walk to if I was bored, I didnt really walk much, we drove a lot. because my school was 15 miles away. and like idk nothing wasn’t super close. and now here that I live on campus, my whole life is here. I eat sleep and breathe campus, so I walk everywhere. to all my classes, to get food, well thats basically it because thats all college leaves you time for…
college is stressful.
and finally, here are more things that I wasn’t expecting.
I didn’t realize it was going to be this difficult. Im currently taking 6 classes (16 credits altogether) and out of those 6 classes, I’m currently passing 2 I think? college is fucking hard. it didn’t help that I had a few major major major anxiety attacks and literally disassociated with everything for a week, two different times, plus I got sick with a nasty ass cold, and like idk, just it sucked. I moved 1,025 miles from home and then homesickness an that reality of “I’m living a thousand miles from home by myself” hit me. and I literally know no one here except autumn who I see once a week on Fridays. (because we both have off) and like it killed me. I left my only home I’ve ever known. I moved my whole life here. and I had a shocking realization that yeah, I’m going to Florida during breaks and whatnot, but I left Florida August 2, 2017 and I knew it was for good. I packed up my whole room last summer and knew that when I got on the plane, I wasn’t going to ever be coming back home home for good. I left my keys on the kitchen counter and said goodbye to my room. and yes, its still my room, but it’s been a guest room for the past few months and its not my room anymore. I did move out. and so that hit me too.
and I’m alone here. I had a mental breakdown one day when I was texting chelsey and Claudia and all I really wanted was a hug from them but they’re a thousand miles away and couldn’t give me one, so I was stuck crying in the middle of our campus chick-fil-a. and so I texted autumn at 9am on a Thursday and she came in her pj’s and walked across campus to give me a hug so I could hug her, cry on her shoulder and breathe a little easier.
and while I know this decision to move states away and leave everything I’ve ever known was hard, I know it was the right decision and the best decision I ever made, and the scariest.
I know that because if I went to school at home, I would Never have ended up moving out. I know I needed to experience college dorm life, and living by myself more, and being independent. I know for my health––mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally––it was for the better. mentally: I am able to escape my mother being here where she can’t visit me or I won’t run into her here. physically: I walk everywhere and I’m attempting to eat healthier etc… spiritually: I’ve had a rough time with my faith, but I’m a christian and like autumn helps me a lot with this in strengthening my faith etc etc, (I’m more spiritual than religious) and emotionally: I’ve been able to heal and accept who I am, and I came out as bi to my friends, currently 4/5 of them and all of you guys. its a new zone here and I can live and be free and be me. I don’t have to worry about the people I knew from high school judging me because I’m bi and we went to a christian school etc. I’m who I am here and my decision to move here has helped me grow.
and also, yeah, I’m stressing currently about my future, but I’m going to take it a day at a time. I’m failing classes right now, but I’ve realized thats because I haven’t been on my A-game. I went thru a major life change, I’ve had a bit of family health issues, I’ve had to deal with a lot of issues and stress surrounding my mother and my relationship with her since starting college, and like a lot more, and so I have decided that while I had a mental breakdown about not making it into the nursing program, I’m going to take it slowly. fuck doing this all “fast and in four years and yada yada”. Its only been one semester, this is a whole new ballgame for me. college is so different from high school. so, I’m going to be better next semester, focus more on my passions, maybe take summer classes, and not pressure myself to be in the nursing program in my 3rd year, take my time. there’s no rush.
notes:
*– mother and I have a very strained relationship due to her years of mental abuse (and very little but still prevalent physical abuse) towards me. I’ve been trying to get out from under her thumb since I was 10. moved in with my dad when I was 12 but since he travelled for work a lot, I stayed with mother etc until I was about 15 when I stayed with friends or by myself. and so being away from her like this has only brought peace and less fights because I don’t have to see her or talk to her
**– college out of state tuition is hella fucking expensive, but thankfully, my granddad had set aside money for his grandkids (there’s only 2 of us, me and my cousin Kiersten who is out of college now) and has put us thru school (private school) our whole lives. we have been blessed so very graciously with being able to go to any school we chose debt free because our grandpa has it covered no questions asked and truly its the best thing ever because while I grew up not worrying about tuition, I still grew up with a tight family income because mom had a fixed income and then when I moved in with dad, he worked for himself, so he has seasonal work… some months its great, other months were scrounging for the last few dollars to put food on the table…
***–since moving to college and being out from under my mother’s thumb, I’ve been talking with my parents (again remind u this means dad and stepmom) about me needing to learn to heal and forgive and just live my life and I can’t do that if I keep having my mother call or text me or expect me to visit her etc… I’m an adult. I’m going home this Christmas to tell her that if she wants to be my mother in the long run, she needs to play by my rules, and this is now going to happen my way. I need to cut contact with her for however long. and she’s not to reach out to me. I need to be the one to do it because if she pushes it, our relationship is so strained right now because of her actions, if she attempts anymore, she’s going to lose me forever as her daughter and deep down, we both don’t want that. so I need space and need to learn how to forgive her. and she needs to get help and learn to be a better person herself. she needs to do a lot of things I’m not going to get into here but yeah, basically.
so that’s it. this was really long and I’m sorry about that. if y’all feel inclined to talk to me about any of this, feel free to do so. I needed to talk through this. I’m probably going to talk about #coco’s college story a bit as my life goes on. I will keep everyone updated. college is stressful, and crazy, and scary and wild and fun and terrifying and a lot of emotions mixed in one

Keep Calm and Work Hard: The Story of Binance’s CEO From A to CZ
Keep Calm and Work Hard: The Story of Binance’s CEO From A to CZ:

Hey r/Entrepreneur, I don't know how long this will be, just kinda writing from the hip (as I always do).Anyway, I've received comments on my posts saying that my advice would be much more useful if I actually shared my experiences. So I'm going to do that in this thread.I'll start at 18, just before I graduated high school.Chapter 1 - Before Starting A BusinessI was a pretty regular teenager. Clocked about 10k hours in WoW, despite being an introvert I had a social life (mostly just hanging out and drinking beer and partaking in the devil's lettuce), and no real ambition to become an entrepreneur. Just kind of living my life without any idea what I wanted to do or make of myself. One day while I was driving to school with my dad, we got stopped because he had a warrant out for his arrest. Some stupid things he did in his past caught up with him. He spent the better part of a year in jail, got extradited to a state 2,500 miles away and I was kind of left without stability. My parents have been divorced since I was 10, but my dad still provided for my mom, she didn't hold down a job well since she was sick. So I moved back with my mom and I had no job. The economy was garbage and I felt like I wasn't going to be considered for a position anywhere so I just wallowed and felt sorry for myself (like some people I've seen here). My brother in law worked for a game development company and actually got me a job in Las Vegas as a QA Tester making $9/hr (with overtime...a lot of it). This gig lasted a few months until the company shut down, unexpectedly. It was a great experience. I got to work for Lou Castle, the founder of Westwood and the brain behind the Command & Conquer series. So I moved back to Oregon with my mom. She was 3 months behind rent, no job and barely anything to eat. So I got desperate. I always liked the idea of "serving my country", so I joined the Marine Corps. My recruiter called me and said "Hey, I've got a spot that just opened up and you can ship in 2 weeks. You'll be in the reserves as a heavy equipment operator". I thought that wasn't too bad. So I took it. After all, since so many people wanted in at the time, the wait time was 9 months for everybody else.Chapter 2 - Our First Client, And BIG MistakeBefore I left, I filed for the paperwork to start a business, my dad needed help getting on his feet because he literally had nothing. While I was away at basic training, he found a business who wanted a website. What was a $500 website turned into a nice relationship making nearly 6-figures a year just from that 1 client. We basically maintained their website and managed roughly $1,000,000 in total ad spend. However, we made the mistake of not getting more clients, we got comfy because we didn't have that kind of money in a while. So in a few years when the Hebrew couple that owned the company sold to move back to Israel, the new owners gave us the boot (we were only responsible for every single customer they received, but hey, what ever). This left us with about 8k in the bank, didn't pay their last invoice of 9k and left us with about a 2.5k Adwords bill and no income. So we got to marketing ourselves and managed to break even when I had about $300 left in the bank to take care of my family and my business. I was so desperate and stressed out all the time. I almost called it quits right here.Chapter 3 - GrowingWe got ourselves a coach who helped us with strategies to market our business, sell our services and scale up. He's the best $2k a month I've ever spent, and I still pay him all these years later for his advice because he's grown as much as we have and his insights are priceless. He taught us about 'systems'. See, up to this point, we had NO systems at all. Everything was just a mess. So it made things very difficult. So we learned how to make marketing and sales systems. We learned how to make a fulfillment system. We got a few clients under our belt to pay our bills then we hired an appointment setter to call all the leads we've been generating. Since we're B2B and our market is brick and mortar businesses, we scraped our leads from the internet. So we developed a great foot in the door product that gave us the ability to get the attention of literally any decision maker. Then we developed the email and phone call marketing strategies to sell this small "trust trigger" product that gave us the opportunity to gain the trust of the decision maker and position ourselves as the trusted experts in the field. Selling our monthly services was easy after that because we could provide trust and value up front without asking for a the decision maker to take a huge risk on us. (This strategy is a post all on its own, I'll probably write it up some day.)So we hustled hard for a few years and built a base of over 200 customers (not all became monthly clients and some didn't stay long).Chapter 4 - Present Day and The FutureRight now, we're grossing 6-figures and still growing. We've become experts ad email marketing and phone call marketing. We have a team of appointment setters who get us in front of decision makers every week to sell our trust triggers (now we have several). Now that we have a lead gen system, a lead conversion system and a fulfillment system, the name of the game is optimization and scaling.Things feel kind of repetitive right now. I've come to learn that no matter what stage you're in, you always feel a lack of confidence. Once you make a milestone, the next is just as hard to achieve. So in a way, I still feel the same about 8 years later as I did at day 1. The only difference is that I can pay my bills. We're looking at being in the 7-figure ball field in the next few years, as long as we keep working harder than everyone else and continue to do great work for our clients.Things get more complicated and more difficult the more you grow. Once you start hiring people, there's a whole new set of challenges to face. Something that's very stressful to me is know that other families rely on ME to eat. THAT'S hard sometimes.Chapter 5 - Bonus For Those Who Have Read This FarIf you have a phone and laptop, you can start a business helping others. I don't know anything about selling products on Amazon or Shopify or Affiliate Marketing. But I DO know B2B marketing like the back of my hand, especially marketing to small businesses. In the beginning, we were only sending out 500 emails a week, that's 100 contacts receiving an email each day--Monday thru Friday. You can do this, too. You want to call everybody who opens their email to present your trust trigger offer.Create a trust trigger of your own. A trust trigger is a standalone product or service you can sell for $47 - $497 but is worth 10x the price you're asking. Call it a "beta" program. You just launched xyz and you're looking for beta testers to get feedback.Your goal with the trust trigger isn't to make money, it's to get REFERRALS. Yes, I get a little money, but that's just a buy-in to weed out the tire kickers. What I'm really after is referrals. If you get just 1 client from hard work and get 3 referrals from there, you start to grow exponentially. Sales become almost friction-less when a peer introduces you. What do you sell your referrals? A trust trigger! Get more referrals! 1 client turns into 3 referrals which can potentially turn into 9 which can turn into 27 and so on.Every client of yours who has purchased your trust trigger will already know you, trust you and like you. Selling your core offering to them becomes easy. In fact, I make the upsell to my monthly services as part of the trust trigger fulfillment process. So when I'm working with them to deliver my trust trigger product, I'm setting them up to sell a core offering before we're finished with the trust trigger (which is a monthly marketing package at about $497 a month). The whole process, ideally, takes 10 days from start to finish for ME.Here's the flow:Outbound marketing -> Inbound Response -> Qualifying Call with Decision Maker - > Set Up Meeting -> Technical Sign Off MeetingOutbound marketing is where you send emails, call potential customers.Inbound response is where a prospect raises their hand and says they're interested.Qualifying call is where you speak with the decision maker for 15-20 minutes and present your trust trigger off and close a sale.Set Up Meeting is a 30-60 minute meeting where you educate about a problem, push that pain point to set them up for a future sale. You want to get what ever details you need at this meeting to make your trust trigger product or service for them.Technical Sign Off Meeting is another 30-60 meeting a week later where you show them the completed product and get their sign off. Do a quick review of the problem from the last meeting and present your solution and close a sale.

Contribute to this quantity whatever financial savings you have, as well as how much time this would certainly last. The void in between revenue on impairment and also outgo would certainly be the quantity of earnings that you may intend to counter with a personal LTD plan. WHY THE NEED FOR DISABILITY INSURANCE BENEFITS? Exactly what are the probabilities?: (2005) in the following hr 194 individuals will certainly be wounded in automobile mishaps, 57 houses will certainly ignite, 230 individuals will certainly pass away, and also 1,027 will certainly end up being impaired. Right here are the newest handicap patterns that worry you. While the number of individuals with security has actually additionally enhanced, the majority of Americans still have a special needs earnings security space. Ø This is startling when you think about in a year’s time, opportunities are just one in 1,200 of you will certainly require your fire insurance policy– typically thought about a need for home owners– however one in 8 (8) of you will certainly be unwell, damaged or eliminated. Ø With Americans currently living much longer, age has and also will certainly proceed to have an extensive influence on impairments. Ø In enhancement, the typical retired life age is removaling up, as well as even more individuals are most likely to function part-time after retired life, therefore boosting the threat of an impairment later on in their life. They stood for simply 4.5 percent of all wedded females. Today, there are regarding 39 million wedded females functioning outside the residence (standing for 60 percent of all wedded ladies), and also 17 million of them have youngsters under age 6. Ø With even more ladies functioning and also households counting on 2 revenues, the demand for handicap defense has actually ended up being higher, particularly because ladies are two times as most likely to endure a disabling health problem compared to guys. “One who fears failure limits his activities. Failure is only the opportunity to more intelligently begin again.” ~ Henry Ford
A view from the Leadville 100 course.
This summer, I embarked on an attempt to complete the Grand Slam of Ultra Running: 1) Western States 100, 2) Vermont 100, 3) Leadville 100, and 4) Wasatch 100.
I made it 40 miles into Leadville 100, and my journey along the Grand Slam ended.
I’ve been asked this a lot recently: “What happened at Leadville 100?”
The simple answer is that I DNF’d–or “did not finish,” or “did nothing fatal.”
But, I know those that ask me this question are looking for more than the obvious. As endurance athletes, we sometimes sugar coat these types of outcomes. In my case, I’ve explained that my result was a medical DNF. That said, it’s still a DNF.
I’m ok with that outcome for now. I own my result, and make no excuses.
So what happened?
The answer to that begins with Western States and Vermont 100, for a complete understanding of the summer as a whole.
Western States was a mental and physical battle to say the least. The toasty weather conditions and very recent loss of my coach Steve Pye played a factor. But, we managed to get to the glorious high school track before the cut off.
That’s the cake.
Running mountain 100’s has a way of exposing the limiters of our bodies and minds, as I learned–repeatedly–in the past few months and years.  Running in the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning exposes the soul to the core.
A few weeks after WS100, I toed the line at VT100 for my fifth consecutive attempt at a finish. Every finish after the Western States finish was really icing on the cake.  I still feel that way about this attempt of the Grand Slam, as I barely made it to the starting line at WS this year–mostly because of how challenging I found WS to be this year. It was the longest battle of my life–or so I thought. (You can read about the Western States story here.)
1 mile left to got at VT100, with my pacer & crew (and very good friend!) Eric.
Round 2
At Vermont 100, the first 50 miles went well and I felt solid until just past the half way aid station. At some point not long after, my GI system slowly seemed to get possessed with a monster wanting to stop my progress.
I fought this monster and used every tool I had in my toolbox to fix it.  But it fought back just a little bit harder, and I puked for the entire second half of the race. I battled deeper than I ever wanted to for a 500 mile buckle finish.
My pacer and crew Eric Schrading was on point as always. Although, I could see in Eric’s eyes a few moments along the way he knew I was deep in the hurt locker, and finishing was not going to be pretty–or maybe not happen at all.
Uncertainty was creeping in, and we punched its ugly head for hours upon hours.
I was running with uncertainty. Could I keep moving with no calories or hydration for such a long duration? I’ll spare you the details but “Pukefest 2017” has a nice ring to it.
I made uncertainty my partner during this time, and after a while, we became friends. We would finish or I would be taken away in an ambulance.
I had come too far to let the mountains wring the quit out of my body and mind. We finished in the early morning hours in the sunlight. I’ve run this race in under 20 hours in the past. Yet, this time it took me a little over 25 hours. That puts the scope of the “Pukefest” into perspective.
Taking a little dirt nap along the trail during VT100.
Round 3
After Vermont, it was time for Leadville 100, with a starting line at 10,152 feet above sea level or 2 miles high. Talk about unknowns! I had no idea how the altitude would affect me, as I’d never spent any duration at that high of an elevation.
This sign sums up how we felt about Leadville: “We ❤ Leadville. Great Living @ 10,200′.  Maria is pretty much convinced this town is home.
Not long after the start of Leadville 100, somewhere around 2 or 3 miles in, I looked at my HR. It was high, much more so than normal–by 30 beats.
It’s just the altitude, I thought.  It will settle down.
But it didn’t. So I slowed down my pace even more–almost walking to force my HR to drop. That did not work. So, I walked a bit, and even with walking, my pulse was 10bpm above where I’d normally run a marathon.
I thought to myself: This isn’t sustainable. What do I need? What do I have?
I reviewed my hydration and fueling.  They were in check–but I was dealing with a new experience, and there wasn’t much else I could do. I was living with uncertainty again.
Stay controlled and go slower than I think I can.
Then, a little headache creeped its way into my temple. The gradual, minor pain progressed into a constant, thumping pain. Then, I began to feel as if I had too many beers.
The dizziness crept in next, and my mobile dexterity started to get out of whack.  I had to be extra cautious to avoid falling, as I found myself stumbling on even clear sections of single track.
When I came through the first crew aid station, around 13 miles into the race, I did not let Maria know how I was feeling just yet. I was hoping the symptoms would pass. Sometimes during endurance events, you feel bad for a bit and then you feel better. I was hoping the headache and dizziness was just a temporary situation.
At the next crew aid station, around 27 miles into the race, I stopped and sat down. This time, I told my crew, which included Maria, my parents, and our friend Alexa, how I was feeling.  As I recall, they said my physical and mental state was okay, and encouraged me to keep moving along.
Maria shows off the options at mile 27.
View from the Mile 27 crew station.
I found myself leaving the crew aid station reluctantly. Not long after, I found myself unwinding progressively. I was having more and more difficulty with easy tasks.  My eyes felt like they were rolling; they were unfocused and blurry. My head continued to thump, louder and harder still.
Simply walking was becoming more difficult.
Get to the next crew aid station and we can reevaluate, I thought.
Time went slowly, and then even slower still. My speech slurred. Fellow runners asked: “Are you okay?”
I was conscious and understood what was going on, but could not control how I felt or my movements. I couldn’t focus. My vision blurred, my limbs didn’t work. My head pounded.
My. Head. Pounded.
Finally, I reached the Twin Lakes crew handler aid station at mile 40. I was 7.5 hours into the race.
I saw Maria first. She said, “You look good!”
I gave her a doubtful look. “We need to have a discussion.”
Twin Lakes Aid Station.
Maria led me to where the rest of the crew was and I sat down, hoping things would come into focus – and I don’t just mean my vision.
I told my crew something was not right. While Maria sat with me, and ran through a series of questions to check the basics, my mother and Alexa went to grab a medic, who could evaluate my situation. We all knew what was happening was very likely altitude sickness. What we didn’t know was whether that was a show stopper or not.
The medical staff performed some tests to diagnose my symptoms, most of which were similar to the types of tests police officers might give someone who they suspect of drunk driving.
He asked me to walk a straight line, heel to toe.
Fail.
He asked me to touch my nose and then touch his finger.
Fail.
He asked me about the duration of my headache and the blurred vision.
Fail.
After the tests and the questions, he recommended that I withdraw from the race.
Fail. Fail. Fail.
I had yet to climb up Hope Pass, which is the highest point of the race, and that meant that the chances of my symptoms improving were near next to zero. The chances of my symptoms worsening were almost 100%.  He explained that altitude sickness can cause brain swelling, along with many other long term issues or even possible death.
In my heart, I knew my race and attempt at the Grand Slam were over. If nothing else, I was done from not being able to focus my vision. I can deal with headache and would grind through the miles, but I needed to be able to see to get this done.
So, we made the decision to withdraw and pull from the race. The Grand Slam journey was over.
I’m sharing this experience not because I want sympathy. I’m sharing this story because I want everyone reading this to know that sometimes shit goes wrong. And, you have to acknowledge when that “wrong” is worth battling – or not.
I DNF’d. I’m  not happy about it. But, I know it was the right call.
I like doing things that take me into uncertainty. To me, that is living. I wasn’t certain I could finish Leadville on this day. And, I didn’t. But, I will go back and make Leadville 100 right some day. I need to do that for myself. I accept the failure of 2017, and thanks to what I have learned, I will begin more intelligently when the day comes to return and finish what I started.
Congratulations to all 2017 Grand Slammers!  See you in the mountains, on a trail someday soon.
Thanks to all who supported and helped along this journey.

Getting Referrals Is Easier Than You Expect
When I teach people how to ask for referrals, this is the push back I usually get:
“I don’t want to make my client feel uncomfortable by putting them on the spot.”
“I don’t want to look needy or unsuccessful.”
These are two of the million reasons why people aren’t confident asking for referrals and introductions. Look, I get it! I totally understand. I was there. I am still there everyday. I, too, need and ask for referrals.
Here are two important points to keep in mind:
1.   Having the right approach will help alleviate your concerns, fears, and that unpleasant feeling of awkwardness.
2.   Are you willing to get comfortable and confident? If not, then you can stop reading now. Heck, you might even consider other work.
It’s been awhile since I was taught the V.I.P.S. Method for asking for referrals. It works, and I will explain it to you now. So here goes…
The first part is the “V”
V = Value Discussion
How to ask for referrals
Without a doubt, in my years spent coaching people on how to ask for referrals, the Value Discussion is the most important strategy that you can learn. It’s really pretty simple. First, let your new clients (and even prospects) know that candid, ongoing communication is important to you and the health of your overall working relationship with them and pretty much every time you meet, you’re going to check in with them to make sure everything is okay; that they continue to see the value in working with you.
Second, continually encourage your clients to express frustrations and anything that’s not working 100% for them. And also encourage them to tell you the value they get and/or how you continue to earn their business.
Here are some examples to give you some ideas about how you might ask for referrals:
You: “Justin, we’ve met a few times over the last couple of weeks. We’ve talked over the phone. You’ve been very gracious answering all the questions I’ve had for you. I’m wondering if you could tell me what parts of the process you were most valuable to you?”
Justin: “That’s a good question. Let me see. Couple things I guess. First, I like the way you asked me some deep questions to get me thinking about my financial future. Second, I thought you explained things really well. I feel like I have a much better handle on my money situation now.”
You: “Great! One of your concerns coming into this process was having enough money for retirement, as well as for your children’s education. How do you feel about those issues now?”
Justin: “Actually, I feel pretty good about it now. Obviously, I’m going to have to stick to the plan we’ve laid out. But I’m much less worried about it. It feels good. Thanks!”
The second part is the “I”
I = Treat Your Request with Importance
When you’re deciding how to ask for referrals, you always want to feel confident. You want to treat the request with importance for two reasons:
1.   You believe the work you do is important
 a.   You believe in the work you do. You know you bring value to individuals, families, and businesses.
 b.   You want to come from a place of confidence, not neediness. If you treat the request with importance, you’re prospects, clients, and centers of influence will respond in kind.
2.   You don’t want to be apologetic or needy
 a.   Again, treat your request with the importance it deserves.
b.   Make sure you have enough time and don’t forget to ask for referrals. Nothing to script here, just make sure you use an agenda for your meetings. Put the words “value check-in” or “discuss value” on the agenda. This will trigger the discussion of value and possible discussion of referrals.
c.    If you met through a referral, remind the client of that.
d.   Move into the request with the words, “I have an important question to ask you.”
Here’s an example (following the discussion of value):
You: “Well, Jim, that’s great. I’m glad you’re seeing the value in the work we’re doing. You know, were it not for Al suggesting we meet, we wouldn’t have done this important work. Guess we both owe him some thanks.”
Jim: “I’ve already thanked him.”
You: “Good. With that in mind, I have an important question to ask you.”
Jim: “Shoot.”
Now you are about to ask me, is it really as simple as that? Yes! It really is. Treating your request with importance is a simple thing and very important. How you deliver this request will determine how they receive it and how they respond. Don’t overlook this quick, but important, step.
The third part is the “P”
P = Permission to Brainstorm or Explore
What makes a request for referrals feel pushy is assuming your prospect or client is ready and open to the conversation. This is why we make sure it’s okay to pursue this collaborative “brainstorm, no pressure” discussion.
I often get the question, “Aren’t you giving them the opportunity to say “no?” Of course I am! What kind of muttonhead are you? The absolute last thing I want to do is pursue a conversation they don’t want to have. Listen carefully and determine their perspective to see if you can re-frame any incorrect assumptions. If they don’t want to do this, then neither do you. Period.
Keep in mind research indicates that simply the request alone for introductions can plant a very powerful seed, producing introductions later in your relationship with your client.
The last part is the “S”
S = Suggest Names and Categories
Come prepared to ask for referrals
When you ask for referrals, come prepared and let your client know you’ve come prepared. This will give you more confidence and produce better results.
There are a number of areas in which to brainstorm. Here are some very short scripts that hit the different areas. Each begins at the same point, i.e., permission to “brainstorm” or “explore” or “think about” or “put our heads together.”
Specific Names
”Thanks, Al. You mentioned your sister and brother-in-law last week. Let’s start with him. Do you think they should at least know about what I do? Can we craft a way for you to introduce me to them that will feel comfortable for all concerned?”
Categories of Names
“Thanks, Justin. I know you’re very active in your industry association. In fact, I think you said you were on the board of directors. Let’s start there. Who do you think might spend a few minutes with me, just because you asked them to?”
Trigger Categories
“Thanks, Fred. I have a few categories of what we call ‘life events’ that often trigger people who should know about the work we do.” Now you suggest some categories of life events and/or money-in- motion events that might help them identify one or more people who should at the very least be aware of what you offer.
Ideal Client Profile
“Thanks, Al. Here’s a profile of the type of people I’ve learned I serve the best. People a lot like you, actually. You’ll see the first characteristic is people who know the value of professional advice. I don’t expect you to know all the details of someone’s financial situation, but you probably have a sense. That’s good enough for this purpose.”
Your “Hit List”
Some people call this a “target list” or “prompting list.” Your hit list can come from different sources. It could be a list of successful people you identify in your community/city. It could be a list of business owners and executives in and around your client’s office building or industrial park. Or, it could be a list of your client’s neighbors. The hit list is usually employed:
1. As the starting point for this discussion; just to get the pump primed 2. If your client can’t think of specific people 3. After you’ve gotten some names and still have some time 4. As the relationship has grown, you’ve asked and gotten some referrals, and the client thinks they’re tapped out of people they can refer to you
You can have fun with this list, first asking your client, “If you were me, whom would you NOT want to talk to?”
“Bob, thanks for this referral to Mary. And thanks for telling me a little bit about her. Before I go, I wanted to show you a list of some folks I am planning on calling. I thought that if you knew any of them, you might be willing to provide an electronic handshake for me. Just send them an email introduction and cc me so I can sensitively follow up. Can we look at this for a second?”
Referrals to Centers of Influence (COIs)
Not only do your clients know people who should be aware of—and benefit from—your important work, they also know potential centers of influence, e.g., CPAs, attorneys, religious leaders, community leaders, HR directors, and all the kinds of people who make good COIs for you. Just as with referrals to their friends, family, and colleagues, clients can refer you to useful COIs.
“Bob, in addition to discussing who I might be able to serve with the work I do, I was hoping you might be willing to introduce me to your CPA. It’s always good for me to know your other advisors and there’s a chance Eddie and I might be able to help each other in some professional ways. Are you open that?
Referrals to Opportunities to Speak for Groups
Many of your prospects and clients are members of business groups, clubs, and other organizations that bring in value-oriented speakers. This is often a very easy introduction for your clients to make.
“Bob, here’s an idea. I know you have that professional study group you meet with every month. I was thinking we might do a little lunch and learn about them. We could spend about an hour going over a checklist of important financial bases one should cover to minimize financial risk and maximize the opportunities. Do you think the group would be open to something like this? I could even provide the sandwiches if you like.
I know that this is a soft approach. That being said, it is a very proactive approach that can create curiosity on their part, leading to the names you really need.
Closing the Circle
I am aware that some people will tell you, “You shouldn’t ask for referrals.” That’s hogwash! The key is doing it the right way and having the right strategies and appropriate language at your fingertips.
This article is just the tip of the iceberg on how to ask for referrals, so if you want more, just reach out and we can discuss it further.
