Misc thoughts regarding the conversation around healthcare and abuse:
1) I think it’s important to have the conversation. We’ve not been having proper conversations about it for far too long, and I believe that this is an important conversation to have. I went into the healthcare sector with the intention of incremental work and disability activism within the field. And conversations and discussions of the way disabled people have been hurt by the establishment also help me with my activism, because it lets me know what areas are in dire need to be changed.
2) Admittedly, at times, it can be very stressful to read these posts. On this site, a lot of people post whatever is on their mind, often with very little editing. Often without intending their words to reach further than their circle of mutuals. So oftentimes you’re reading people’s semi-vents along with their genuine complaints with the establishment. I don’t blame anyone for this; it’s hard work to put together a proper list of demands and complaints and to come up with theory and new ideas on how to better treat disabled patients. And many blogs are a private space for people to vent about something which did hurt them gravely. But I won’t lie and say that I wasn’t stressed out.
2a) I should also make it clear that I don’t blame a bunch of bloggers at all for this. This is largely the work of my own bad brains and scrupulosity, honestly.
3) I’ll admit that I face unique difficulties in this field, being ND. I recalled a couple of times where I tried to be firm with patients, but because I’d always had trouble with controlling my volume and tone due to autism reasons, I might have ended up speaking louder and stricter than I intended. To my knowledge, the patients weren’t gravely hurt by it, and I did try hard to be mindful of tone and volume while on clinicals. But this might be another reason why the field doesn’t have very many disabled people working in it. Other than the fact that courses are tiring and rough to get through, there’s also the fact that, in particular, mentally ill healthcare workers are more susceptible to burnout because of how much self-discipline is needed to manage our symptoms + deliver adequate care.
3a) Still not an excuse for abuse to be perpetuated by anyone, mind. But it’s a point I didn’t see many people bring up, and I feel like it’s important to be discussed too.
4) I feel like using ‘the girl who was mean to you in high school’ for framing isn’t the best? Like, I get what people mean. I was legitimately shocked when I heard how certain nurses on tiktok behaved because they really did display some terrible behaviour akin to bullying done by highschoolers. But also, I think it’s also important that people remember that most bullies don’t regard themselves as bullies. They see themselves as regular people and the harm they cause certain people is justified because of xyz reasons. This type of thinking isn’t just reserved for the Regina Georges of the world, because everyone can be susceptible to it if they aren’t careful. Even people who were bullied.
