Pokemon Designs I don’t like. Part 2.
Before I begin, I forgot to mention one particular Pokemon design in the dishonorable mentions from Gen 1.
Dugtrio.
Often criticized for being a very lazy design, and it might be true, they are just three angry Digglets stuck together, but nobody knows what its actual body looks like, maybe they’re three heads sharing one body. Who knows? At least the Alola form gives it variety. Besides, if I give Magneton a pass, I’ll feel like a hypocrite if I didn’t do the same for Dugtrio, don’t you think?
Now on to the list.
Gen 2.
Just like the previous gen, there are some Pokemon designs that I’m not a fan of, so I just ignore them, but there are others that are just so bad that I simply can’t stop criticizing them.
1. Meganium.
If I ever played Gold and Silver, my starter pokemon would definitely be Chikorita, but for some reason its final evolution clashes with me. Chikorita and Bayleaf’s designs were going in one direction, and then suddenly Meganium. What happened to the leaf on their heads? Why were they replaced with antennae? I was expecting something like a Tropius, but this one is kind of a let down to me. I like the colors, but I guess those antennae just “bug” me too much.
7/10.
2. Lanturn.
There’s something about Lanturn’s design that always bothered me. Chinchou is one of the cutest Pokemon I’ve ever seen, but it turns into this? It looses its cuteness and now it just looks silly, like an anime version of Flounder from The Little Mermaid.
Just saying that the cutesy Chinchou could’ve evolve into something cooler.
4/10.
3. Togetic.
Bart Simpson became a fairy Pokemon!
I’m not the biggest Togepi fan, specially since the anime portrays it as a useless baby Pokemon carried around by a character I always hated (Sorry Poke shippers), but I never expected it to turn into this hard boiled egg with wings. Did Togepi’s egg shell just merge with it’s skin and suddenly got wings? It just looks really silly to me.
2/10.
4. Sunflora.
It’s a fat Sun flower, with ugly feet. Do I need to say more? Sunflora is kind of a lazy design for Pokemon standards, I just think they could’ve done a better job here, a little more creative. If a Digimon is a better looking sunflower monster, then you're doing something wrong.
1/10.
5. Wobbufett.
Interesting idea, lame execution. I understand that its brain is in its tail and that the rest of the body is a decoy, but Wobbufett’s creation revolves around a Japanese comedian, it’s just a bad pun turn into a blue punching bag Pokemon. And he’s just so annoying in the anime, its more of a stupid gag than an actual living creature.
6/10.
6. Girafarig.
Girafarig always rubs me the wrong way, from it’s color scheme to its second brain on that creepy looking tail. I like the idea of a Giraffe Pokemon but Girafarig is just... Short. Giraffes are the tallest animals in the world and there is a lot that you can do with its design, but this little abomination just hurts my brain in more than one way.
5/10.
7. Gligar.
It just bothers me. The design is cool and its a creative idea, but why is it pink? And why is its tongue sticking out? It looks like a Sonic the Hedgehog villain made out of bubblegum.
8/10.
8. And finally, Smeargle.
“You gotta smear, men smear”.
I just hate Smeargle’s design, its supposed to be the artist Pokemon, but I don’t want it near my team. I think its some kind of Beagle, but it looks more like a sheep to me, this weird lion sheep chimera thing with its tail covered in who knows what is just too much for me.
3/10.
Those are all the Pokemon from Gen 2 I have a problem with regarding their designs. Any Pokemon I left out?
