TDB  Rewatch  A Katy  or a Gaga Episode 5x04
“I am badass (...)  I just... I happen to like sweet things, too.”
Now is the time I start feeling tempted to skip the next few episodes and continue with the New York arc but unfortunately the writers did not only spend too much time in Lima between prom and graduation, they also were cruel enough to add a perfect little story to each  some of these episodes, which I just cannot skip over *sigh*. Like introducing Adam Lambert as Starchild Gilbert. Everything about the New York arc from Kurts excitement about the new band, Starchilds audition, the band-naming, every Kurt-Santana interaction is so perfect.
Tumblr media
I get Kurt innitially not wanting Starchild for the band.  Elliot is much like Kurt, he’s not afraid to be unapologetically himself, he sews his own crazy costumes (I would have loved to see them bonding over sewing projects) but to Kurt it must be a little confusing, not only is he usually the one on the other side, being the crazy performer himself, but Starchild could actually upstage him.... and I absolutely get his wish to be mainstream and successful for a change. Being himself and continuously swimming against the current might make him special and unique, but it can also be a bit exhausting at times. Interestingly this is one of the few times, Rachel is actually supportive to him. Elliot is such a sweet guy and I love the friendship he and Kurt are going to have.
Tumblr media
To the Lima side I just have to say that I usually know these artists from the radio, I know hardly some of their life performances or music videos so I can’t say much to the costuming except that Blaine doesn’t seem very comfortable in his (why is there a horse tail??) Considering that the NDs ran around in replicas of Gaga and Katy costumes for an entire week just for the sole purpose of getting into the right mood in preparation for nationals, I wonder if Throat Explosion actually is the only show choir whose ‘budgets for costume, make-up and hair alone are astronomical’, lol.
This gives me Hedwig feels.
Tumblr media
The things that bug me the most are first: the fact that they spent so much time on the Sam-Penny relationship when this episode marks the last appearance of nurse Penny, anyway. And second: the fact that the writers can’t seem to think of another reason than cheating for breaking up a couple. Marley and Jake are very different and have far too oppositional interests to become a long-term couple, but 16/17 year old teenagers going at it like Bree/Jake just for the sole purpose of getting off - I don’t know....
Tumblr media
Kurt - Blaine Things:
“I’m a Katy Perry and I’m proud of it.”
Blaines little comforting gesture to Marley.
”I want... mainstream acceptance and success for once.... I’ve been doing this ‘weirdo, quirky, fabulous, outrageous, side-kick, best friend’ thing for a while now and it hasn’t gotten me very far. Making your own path is just so hard sometimes... “
The suit Kurt is sewing the lace on at the loft is the same he wore in the s3 valentines episode.
“And I look like Sigfried and Roy, and I stll did it.” I wonder if this were Darren’s actual thoughts about his costume... which gave me some Hedwig-flashbacks this time.
These band name suggestions are hilarious.
Blaine seems to confuse Roar with an audition for Tarzan, lol.
Other Things:
“We lost our biggest Gaga when Kurt graduated last year.”  as if they’d ever used Kurt as a secret weapon during competition....
“I’m sorry, would you mind just stepping outside for a moment while I bitch-slap some sense into my friend.
"Let me autocorrect that for you. I tried breaking into the zoo to get us five tigers. Plot twist – Lima doesn't have a zoo, why did we think it had?"
“We’re beating our heads up against the wall trying to come up with a name for our band that pleases the Queen.”

5x04
Recap guy voice: Jake and Marley have found true love so you know that’s gonna last!! Umm rude. Also no bc the writers don’t know how to have a relationship without cheating so bleh
I’ve said it before but my favorite parts of the show are when they’re just sitting around acting like fools and the dialogue hasn’t started yet. Blaine and Artie doing the little finger wave thing at the piano? Adorable
I’m glad Tina has some sense and knows Kurt was the biggest Gaga at that school
“Is there a third option?” Honestly this is so silly omg. But good silly honestly
Also ugh I’m sad that they didn’t have a full Gaga episode. Like she had half a dozen albums out at that point with like a million different styles of music she used. They could’ve done a whole ep. You don’t have to split Gaga with Kiss or Katy, trust
“Adam kicked me out of the Adam’s Apples when he heard I was engaged” aww there’s that boyfriend that’s so much sweeter and softer and more considerate than Blaine :)
“Finn wouldn’t want you sitting on the sidelines while life passes you by” isn’t that exactly what she has to tell him in like three episodes?
“What about you, babe?” Realistically I know Dani is the lesbian Adam but I still love her and she’s cute as long as we ignore the biphobia oops
Penny: And if this homemade dark mark doesn’t convince you...
TRUE JACKSON VP
Oh my god I remember someone describing Blaine in a red polo as a cupcake and then in this polo with the decorations he was “a cupcake with sprinkles” and he’s wearing it when Sam says “I like sweet things too” he’s talking about cupcake sprinkles Blaine
So that’s two episodes in a row where Kurt and Santana coordinate outfits. Could they be any cuter??
Sorry Kurt, I love you, but the Apocalypsticks is a phenomenal name
ADAM! The good Adam. I love him. He was criminally underused
“It’s a little Project Runway. Season six” oh Kurt your jabs give me life
I would literally die for Lady Gaga but AL’s version of Marry the Night is just like... perfect
This is why I wish Klaine didn’t get back together for a while. Bc how could Kurt not wanna jump on that???
I hate Bree but her in this caution tape outfit... I mean I’m only human
Oh my god Marley getting all excited over the Julie Andrews film tribute?? Someone tell me how on earth she could be anything but Kurt’s (and Blaine’s) child???
How can Marley afford to go to the movies and Breadstix every weekend anyway lmao. She broke
“Former teen stripper” honey don’t make me keep thinking about that...
Omg why does Marley look so starstruck when Sam says Penny will be attending the show?? She’s so cute
“...Lady Gaga?” “Who?!” I love Becky sometimes
I love Rachel’s more mature s4-5 wardrobe but this polka dot sweater... Honey. No.
Is Mr. Schuester pretending to teach? Awkward
“Let’s reenact a live birth on stage!” Sorry Unique that’s not for another four episodes
PENIS FLY TRAP how can anyone not love Unique omg
I fucking love the guys’ Gaga costumes but I would straight up trade my first born child to see Kurt in that white corset get up Ryder is wearing
And here’s my fave part of the show, where Mr. Schuester suspends Marley for not wearing a seashell bikini (:
“I can be whoever you want” omg why don’t more people ship Kelliott?? Short answer, they just like hating Blaine and don’t actually care about who meshes well with Kurt
“Lady Gaga is too dark for me” oh my god these people
Sorry but Wide Awake is literally like musical ambien. They sound great but at what cost???
I also lowkey ship Blaine and Jake. I mean look at those big moon eyes from Blaine when Jake is singing. I can’t
Omg Jake kissed Marley’s forehead. Cute. Why why why does what’s about to happen have to happen???
Areola 51 Santana oh my god I love you
I kind of love that Rachel takes a whole ass backseat in this episode. It’s about damn time
“Gaga and Katy push each other to try harder, to get better, to be bolder!” Remember when the legendary Bob the Drag Queen was like “Is Beyonce worried about Britney?” That’s Gaga about Katy lmao
All these costumes are amazing but Tina and Kitty especially... oh my god.
“That was BS. Before Sue”. Okay but Sue is right though. Dress code is a thing that exists lol
I don’t like this song and wtf is this jerky movement down the halls but ugh. Everyone looks so good. I can’t stay mad
And now the loincloths and leopard bras. This show really gets me
And another event (this time forming a band and performing together) that revolves around Kurt and he doesn’t get a single solo line in a song :)

Tdb rewatch: A Katy or a Gaga
German title: Katy oder Gaga
This is a fun episode even though I don’t understand the premise...I mean, I do understand it, but I don’t understand the choosing of these two as the example of hard and edgy and theatrical on the one hand and sweet and soft and natural on the other. But that doesn’t matter....I don’t understand Kurt’s definition of a band either, but it doesn’t keep me from enjoying the story (although...I mean, the guys who actual play the instruments are kind of a vital part for the band, and in Kurt’s band, no one except Dani plays an instrument and the guys who do just seem to materialize out of thin air when needed, just like at McKinley, but are not really in the band?)
Anyway, I really dislike Marley in this episode. The kids, on the other hand, now hate Jake. The thing is...being oneself and not changing for anyone is a commendable attitude, especially in a teenager, but if that means to not be able to compromise in a relationship or act for any kind of performance, it will mean a lot of difficulties in life. I mean, I think this exercise is rather smart for once, as  a performer, be it acting or dancing or music, must be able to play roles that are the complete opposite of oneself. Marley wants to be a singer/songwriter if I remember correctly, and she probably won’t have to do a lot of it, but as an exercise it can still be meaningful and also fun. And I get that her issues with Jake fall into her refusal to act the way the performance calls for, but she still spoils it for everyone else when she could just have refused to go on.
Jake...I hate that they made him cheat. They could have broken them up for a thousand other reasons - he could have not wanted to go on dates anymore with someone who never considers what he might want to do, she might not have wanted to feel pressured into having sex (though I think it is not unreasonable to want to have a conversation about it without being accused of only wanting her for sex). Whatever.
What else? I love Elliot, even though I don’t understand why he feels it is his life’s purpose to join a  Madonna cover band no one has ever heard of. I like that Rachel is, for once, there to be Kurt’s emotional support. I understand Kurt’s struggle even though he seems to have it once per season or so. And to be honest, if he wanted an easy path, he should not have made showbusiness his goal.

TDB Rewatch: A Katy or a Gaga
This is a nice episode - I think these mid-season 5 episodes kind of are forgotten in the mess that is everything else.  There’s not really anything low here, though not any extreme highs either.  We’re getting into a pleasant run of the season (I mean, I think the whole season is pleasant but yeah...)  and it’s nice to be back to generally enjoying the show again.
Thoughts:
The Katy and Gaga metaphor is so entirely weak and one-dimensional.  I mean, c’mon - they’re basically the same thing.  And it’s somewhat naive to think that Katy Perry isn’t dark and that Lady Gaga isn’t soft and romantic.  Not to mention that their music is basically the same kind of pop, so it’s all kind of a moot point anyway.  If you want musical contrast, let’s do Mozart vs Marilyn Manson.
Ryder - is there a third option?
The music in this episode, however, is used really nicely - and it’s refreshing not to have an episode jammed filled of music, let’s the plot lines hold more weight, tbh.  And while I’m not a fan of three out of the four songs in the episode, they were all done really well.
Being after the Quarterback, I can understand why -- but this episode really brings back the comedy of the show, and I really appreciate that.
Also - watch for people’s background moments in this one -- this episode is full of brilliant background moments.
So.... let’s start with Sam and Penny.  On the one hand - can we talk about the ickiness of a school faculty member and student openly flirting and even hooking up on grounds? I just... no.  Nope.  No.  On the other -- nothing about Chord Overstreet says pre-pubescent boy.  The plot line is so thin comparatively to everything else going on - it’s fine.  Besides, it’s basically dropped after this anyway.
Sam loving Nickelodeon shows though.
Oh yeah, I forgot this was when Becky started acting like an extreme bitch for a length of episodes.  I’m not sure what the point is.  I did like how Artie had to tell Kitty he didn’t sleep with Becky though.
You know what - I actually kind of like Marley’s story in this episode.  I’m glad there’s a conversation here about a woman not wanting to change for a man, and taking their time having sex.  I’m sorry it’s kind of buried because a) newbies story, b) going to be a cheating story, and c) a story that would have held more weight a few seasons earlier.
Meanwhile, I’m really annoyed that Bree’s entire existence is to tempt Jake.  Ug. and why more cheating.  Why?? And I really kind of hate that it’s framed because Jake’s sexually frustrated.
(I wouldn’t even mind the end of Jarley - except we’re going to take a detour through Ryder the next few episodes.  Blerg.  But I’ll reiterate, I like the message with Marley.)
Meanwhile - what if we do sparklers, but inside...
Also - Will remains being a dick - screw him and his attitude not to bring personal things into the choir room.  I mean - does he even remember the horror that was Rocky Horror??
Meanwhile also - the Gagas trying to be Katys was hilarious in their limited screen time.  Though - what’s up with Jenna’s acting?  She’s kind of overdoing the whole over-the-top thing.  Calm down dude.
Plot twist - Lima doesn’t have a zoo.  Why’d we think it did?
Blaine’s a little darling.  It’s a shame he gets very little to do between episode 1 and episode 6.  Boo.
Alright - bring on the New York.  I kinda love everything about this - Rachel being support of Kurt, fun Santana and Kurt hijinx, Kurt getting a fun and interesting plot line, Adam Lambert, I mean - while I don’t even mind the McKinley stuff, New York gets to be a whole lot of fun for most of this season.
Alright, yes, Adam Lambert - I have absolutely fallen in love with you.  Never enough Elliott.
It’s funny to me that during early season 5, they make it a point to acknowledge Klaine on the New York side, but never on the Lima side.  That’s... weird, right?? I appreciate it being on the NYC side though.
And, uh, yeah - solid episode.

TDB  Rewatch  A Katy or a Gaga  FicRec   Episode 5x04
this week’s rec starts with a scene that takes place before 5x04, telling about Kurt’s reaction to Adam kicking him out of the apples and his decision to start his own band. It’s A Cold Slap of Reality  by  @flamingmuse  Summary: Kurt walked stiffly out of the coffee shop and onto the busy city sidewalk, still not quite sure what had just happened or why...set between 5x02 and 5x04
Kurt’s reaction to Blaine’s Gaga outfit is the topic of @trufflemores’  Unveil  and Convictions , which also includes some talk about future carreer opportunities
and of nightbirdrises’  A Star Always Shines  Summary: Total fluff.
Mending Seams by @flowerfan2 is about the importance of honest communication  Summary: How can they be soulmates if they are so bad at communicating?  The one where Kurt threatens to steal Blaine's title as King of Deflection.
and the last but not least is One’s Impossible, Two is Dreary (aka, There are 10 kinds of people in this world: those who understand binary, and those who don’t.)  by Lokei  about a skype conversation between Kurt, Blaine, Unique and Marley about Katys and Gagas in general and about the importance to say no, sometimes.
Enjoy <3

TDB Rewatch: A Katy or a Gaga (5x04)
Tumblr media
Welcome to season 5! This week we’re doing A Katy or a Gaga!
Nationals is in four weeks and Mr. Schue just got the secret setlist of the New Directions' competition at Nationals. One of the show choirs, Throat Explosion, proves to be a threat, and so, Will gives the Glee Club an assignment: Katy Perryor Lady Gaga. The Katys will sing Gaga songs while the Gagas will sing Katy songs. Given the assignment, Sam is eager to use it to improve the chances of him and Pennygetting together, Marley struggles to become a Gaga and impress Jake and Sue and Bree have bad plans, involving the Glee Club. In New York, Kurt's Madonna Cover band is in development as one stunning performer, Elliott (portrayed by guest-star Adam Lambert), auditions, causing Kurt to become conflicted.
The episode was directed by Ian Brennan and co-written by Russel Friend and Garrett Lerner.
Sundays: Pretty much the kick off day for the week, and also where Meta Monday and First Listen Friday are distilled into.  So – do that rewatch, dust off that old meta, listen to that music again, then write about it and put it in the tags!
Tuesdays: Will remain the poll, the results will be on Saturdays as usual.
Thursdays: Will remain TBT – and I encourage you to post the gifsets, old interviews, memes, and fanfics – anything related to the episode.
Instead of doing a round up – tag with “tdb rewatch” “todaydreambelievers” or “spaceorphan18″ and I’ll reblog it here so everyone can take a look at it.  Also - have any prompts for fanfics related to the episode, or headcanon kickstarters? Feel free to tag me, too, and maybe we can get some good discussions going.  I hoping that by reblogging - it’ll start more conversations and/or get things moving a little more than things were in season 1.
As usual - don’t feel bound to my schedule - if you have something from season 1 you’d like to have out there, still tag me! I’ll reblog it with the correct episode tag.

So - four years ago, when I started TDB, I did a huge ole episode tournament.  I figured, since we’re winding down with the rewatch and podcast that I’d see how everything shakes out again.
Round 1 Results and Brackets:  CLICK HERE.
So - because of a screw up on my part, I missed the match up of Home vs Wheels - so that’s in this round.  Also - Sadie Hawkins v A Katy or a Gaga tied, so we’re doing a re do on that one.
I’ll do a new round on Mondays - giving you guys a week to vote!

So - looking at this list, I can definitely tell I grouped things by tens when I originally did this.  There may be some minor differences now (and I’ll be interested to see the differences when I do my within the season rankings for TDB Rewatch recap week).
Also - thinking season wise, I think it’s pretty clear how I feel.
Seasons 2 and 5 are my favorites - though I think season 2 has extreme highs and lows, while season 5 is more consistent.
Seasons 4 and 6 Idk if I could choose between - I think I like them equally, tbh.
Season 1 - which has some great things in the back 9, but the Front 13 always feels like a slog.
and Season 3.  Ug. But it does have some bright moments in it.

August Agenda -
Hoping to be productive this month, but that would involve not being too emotionally overwhelmed.  Feeling a lot better, but setbacks are a thing. Anyway....
Meta for Quarterback, A Katy or a Gaga, End of Twerk, and Movin’ Out.  That’s one a week, should be fine.
Finish the Pizza and Porn one shot.  It should not take me a month to do this.
Regular blogging activity - TDB Rewatch/Podcast/Etc...
Make some headway as to what to focus on in original writing.
These are all reasonable goals.  Here’s to this month being more productive than the last.  (Even if I did have an excuse.)
