Under a Rock

Luke 24:13-35
“Living Under a Rock”
(Holy Hospitality and Holy Heartburn)
I heard a fascinating news story this past week:
After spending almost a year-and-a-half in near-total isolation some 230 feet underground, Beatriz Flamini emerged from a cave in southern Spain. . . The climber and mountaineer had entered the cave in Granada on November 21, 2021, determined to spend 500 days alone — monitored from afar by a group of scientists — to explore the effects of isolation on the human body and mind.  Flamini was 48 years old when she went down, and 50 when she officially completed the challenge. . .[1]
She had no way to measure time [during the 500 day challenge, and] spent her time doing exercises to keep herself fit, painting and drawing, and knitting wooly hats.[2]
She also read nearly 60 books during the challenge and – after a couple of months – lost track of time to such a degree that she thought she had only been underground for 160-170 days.
Flamini says she still feels like it's 2021. Indeed, major global events, from Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine to the death of Queen Elizabeth II, happened while she was basically living under a rock.[3]
In English, if you hear that someone has been “living under a rock,” this means that they are oblivious to something that has happened in the outside world or unaware of things that most people know about.  Last week, we talked about “F.O.M.O” – the “Fear of Missing Out.”  Well, if someone has been “living under a rock,” they have missed out on something.  But maybe they don’t mind this.  Imagine not having to hear about some of the less-than-savory events of the past year and a half.  Maybe it’s no wonder that Flamini really didn’t want her time under a rock to end.
In today’s scripture reading, we find two people, walking down the road, talking about some less-than-savory, confusing recent events – the death of their friend and teacher, Jesus, and the news they have just heard:  that Jesus is no longer dead.  While they are walking and talking, they encounter a stranger who is walking along in the same direction.  And this stranger (who, we are told, is a yet-to-be-recognized Jesus) asks them, “What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?”  (Luke 24:17). The question stops them in their tracks and, according to the story, they stand still, looking sad.[4]
“Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?” the disciple named Cleopas asks.  Just in case you’re wondering, this is the Bible-speak version of “Don’t you know?  Everyone has been talking about this.  This is the only thing on many people’s minds and lips today.  Have you been living under a rock?”  “Friend, if you only knew. . .” Jesus thinks.
In this season of Easter, in which we are revisiting some of the stories of Jesus and his resurrection, I think that today’s story is one of my favorites.  Here we have two regular people – Cleopas and another unnamed disciple – who are not part of Jesus’ closest inner circle and don’t have more famous names like Peter, or John, or Mary Magdalene.  Just so you know, this is the only time that Cleopas’ name appears in the Bible.  I almost feel like Cleopas and his friend could be anybody – stand-ins for folks who are not well-known, some of the general populace followers of Jesus, maybe even people like us.
I mean, I’m sure that they were known to Jesus and the other disciples in Jerusalem, but we don’t know much about them except that they are on their way to the village called Emmaus – about seven miles from Jerusalem – and they are clearly sad.
“Why are you sad?” the yet-to-be-recognized Jesus asks.  “What are you talking about?  What are these things that have taken place?”  He asks this, even though he knows very well what has taken place.
Cleopas and his friend begin to speak – the words spilling out – retelling the things that have happened all-too-recently:
“The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene. He was a man of God, a prophet, dynamic in work and word, blessed by both God and all the people. Then our high priests and leaders betrayed him, got him sentenced to death, and crucified him. And we had our hopes up that he was the One, the One about to deliver Israel. And it is now the third day since it happened. But now some women [of our group] have completely confused us. Early this morning they were at the tomb and couldn’t find his body. They came back with the story that they had seen a vision of angels who said he was alive. Some of our friends went off to the tomb to check and found it empty just as the women said, but they didn’t see Jesus.”[5]
“These are the things that have taken place – the things that are concerning and confusing us so, the things that we know about because we haven’t been living under a rock.”
When John Calvin writes about this, he says that it is clear that Cleopas and his friend are filled with uncertainty – wondering what in heaven’s name is going on – but they still have “a reverence for [Christ’s] doctrine”[6] and they are not afraid to speak of Jesus in glowing terms – “a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people. . . we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel (to set Israel free).” (24:19, 21). As Calvin notes, after Jesus’ arrest and death, it might have very well been a dangerous thing to speak so openly to a stranger and say such nice things about Jesus, but either Cleopas and his friend are not afraid or – like some of us can be when we are filled with emotion – they just need to get all of these big feelings off their chests.
Anyway, Cleopas and his friend pour out their hopes and their hearts to this stranger and then, quite unexpectedly, the stranger turns the tables when he tells them:  “Oh, how foolish you are and how slow of heart to believe. . .”  (24:25)  Just so you know, in the original language, “slow of heart” could also be translated “dull of heart” or “too dull to believe,”[7]implying that Cleopas and his friend might not be – how shall we say – the brightest bulbs in the marquis.  As professor Rodger Nishioka once said, the stranger might as well have said, “You two are dumber than a box of dirt.  Bless your hearts.”[8]  Or, maybe, for the purposes of today’s sermon, the stranger might as well have said, “Hmmmm. . . seems like the two of you have been living under a rock.”
While Cleopas and his friend are picking their jaws up off the ground, the still-incognito Jesus elaborates:
“So thick-headed! So slow-hearted! Why can’t you simply believe all that the prophets said? Don’t you see that these things had to happen, that the Messiah had to suffer and only then enter into his glory?” Then he started at the beginning, with the Books of Moses, and went on through all the Prophets, pointing out everything in the Scriptures that referred to him.[9]
The stranger’s words clearly have an effect on Cleopas and his friend.  You see, not only does the stranger clearly know his scripture, but his words seem to change the hearts of these disciples.  Instead of having dim or dull hearts, a light is lit[10] and begins to flicker there – a Holy light, a hopeful light.[11]  It is but a small flicker, at first, but it is enough so that as they get close to their destination in the village of Emmaus, the stranger starts to walk on, but they say, “Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.”  (24:29). Just so you know, in the original language, the disciples are really saying, “Abide with us,”[12] which seems like a far more meaningful invitation.
The stranger stays for dinner – abiding with them at the table.  And, while they are eating, he takes bread, and blesses it, and breaks it, and gives it to them.  “Then their eyes [are] opened, and they [recognize] him.”  (24:31). In the original language, their eyes “fully understand”[13] and they “know exactly and completely,”[14] that the stranger who approached them and greeted them at their most sorrowful, the stranger who has been walking and talking with them, teaching them, eating with them, and feeding them is, indeed, Jesus.
There is this one part of the story that I find particularly peculiar, when just as he is recognized, Jesus disappears – vanishing from their sight.  I never quite got this part of the story.  Why doesn’t Jesus at least stick around for dessert?  Thankfully, Calvin is helpful here, when he writes:
So far, then, as it was necessary to assure them of his resurrection, he made himself visible to them; but by the sudden departure, he taught them that they must seek him elsewhere than in the [physical] world. . .[15]
This is how it can be for so many of us – encountering Jesus in glimpses and flashes of recognition, in ways that inspire us to keep seeking him even when we cannot see him face to face.  It can be frustrating – looking for Jesus in our lives, and in the world, and not always seeing him when and where and how we want him to be.  And yet, if we are people who hope in the resurrection, we are placing our hope in the One who subverted people’s expectations – surprising everyone with his inability to stay predictable, or even to stay dead.
Today’s story reveals two indications or practices that might just lead toward a Holy encounter or two – if our minds and hearts are open, if we aren’t living under a rock.  The first is the gift of hospitality.  Jesus and his disciples are hospitable to one another on the road – open to one another even though they might seem like strangers.  Sometimes, I find so much joy and grace in a moment when I open myself up and talk to a complete stranger or when they open themselves up to me – whether we are trying to crack a joke or simply saying hello.  Hospitality, shown through kindness and empathy breaks down barriers and connects us to one another.  Cleopas and his friend want an even deeper connection, though.  Theirs is not a passing encounter, and so they offer hospitality to this stranger – to Jesus – inviting him to dinner.  As Jesus proves, there is so much grace that can be shared around a table.  It begs the question:  who is invited to sit at your own table, and who – by accident or on purpose – is not invited?  Jesus is always expanding the table of grace.  Are we?
The second indication of ways by which we might seek Jesus is seen in how the Holy Spirit is at work when Cleopas and his friend say to one another, “Was your heart burning within you?  Because mine sure was!”[16]  In some Christian traditions, this strange warming of the heart is an essential part of experiencing a salvation moment.  In ours, however, this strange warming of the heart is not essential but it sure is a gift if and when it happens.  And if we are able to share it with another person – another person who witnesses it with us – it is a double gift.  It was Jesus who said, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am among them.”  (Matthew 18:20)  This is the Holy Spirit at work, making Christ’s presence known.  We don’t always need Holy heartburn to have faith and if we don’t always feel our hearts burning this doesn’t mean that Jesus isn’t near.  The life of faith should not be spent chasing a special feeling.  Instead, the real work of faith is putting our trust in something – in someone – even (maybe even, especially) when we don’t feel that special feeling.  It sure can be nice, though. . .
I know it must have been a challenge for Beatriz Flamini – living under a rock for so long.  But for Flamini, it must have been nice to know that even though she never saw another person, she was never really alone.  For her challenge in that cave,
. . . she was [remotely] monitored by a group of psychologists, researchers, speleologists — specialists in the study of caves — and physical trainers, who watched her every move and monitored her physical and mental well-being, though they never made contact.[17]
They were always there – watching over her – even if she never saw them.
The same can be said of the risen Jesus – the One who did not stay under a rock for long, the One who is out in the world, being revealed in holy hospitality, and loving community, and generous empathy.  May Jesus be found in these places and may our eyes be open to see him in unexpected ways.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

On this date in the world of music…
October 26th
2019 - Paul Barrere
American musician Paul Barrere died age 71. He was a member of Little Feat, which he joined in 1972. Barrere later played with Phil Lesh and Friends and also toured with Bob Dylan.
2013 - Quincy Jones
Producer Quincy Jones was suing the estate of the late Michael Jackson for millions of dollars. He said the singer's estate and Sony Music Entertainment improperly re-edited songs to deprive him of royalties and production fees. Mr Jones stated that they also broke an agreement giving him the right to remix master recordings for albums released after Jackson's death in 2009.
2011 - Aerosmith
Aerosmith were forced to delay a concert in South America after Steven Tyler fell in his hotel bathroom. The singer suffered cuts to his face and lost two of his teeth ahead of a concert in Asuncion, Paraguay. He was said to have received stitches and had emergency dental work, forcing the gig to be postponed by 24 hours.
2010 - Top Earning Dead Celebrities
Forbes Magazine released its annual list of the Top Earning Dead Celebrities. Michael Jackson led the way at $275 million, Elvis Presley was second at $60 million and John Lennon was fifth at $17 million.
1984 - Ozzy Osbourne
19-year-old John D. McCollum killed himself with a .22 caliber handgun after spending the day listening to Ozzy Osbourne records. One year later, McCollum's parents took court action against Ozzy and CBS Records, alleging that the song "Suicide Solution" from the album Blizzard of Ozz contributed to their son's death. The case was eventually thrown out of court.
1979 - AC/DC
AC/DC appeared at The Mayfair, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, supported by Def Leppard. The bands were booked to appear the night before but after a fire at the venue in the afternoon, the show was cancelled.

A wake was held at the Lion's Share in San Anselmo, California to celebrate the life of Janis Joplin. The singer who died of an accidental drugs overdose had left $2,500 in her will to throw a wake party in the event of her demise. The party was attended by her sister Laura and Joplin's close friends; Brownies laced with hashish were unknowingly passed around amongst the guests. Joplin was cremated in the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Mortuary in Los Angeles; her ashes were scattered from a plane into the Pacific Ocean and along Stinson Beach.

1965 - The Beatles
Queen Elizabeth II invested The Beatles with their MBE's at Buckingham Palace, London. According to an account by John Lennon the group smoked marijuana in one of the palace bathrooms to calm their nerves. Many former recipients gave their MBE's back in protest, to which John Lennon responded "Lots of people who complained about us receiving the MBE received theirs for heroism in the war, for killing people." He continued: "We received ours for entertaining other people. I'd say we deserve ours more."

Weekend Top Ten #552
Top Ten Elizabethans
This is going to be my final reference to our monarchical milestone for the time being. When Charles III has his coronation I may do something else – you don’t see coronations everyday, after all; this isn’t Westeros – but for now, this is it. I think three weeks is enough to commemorate.
Anyway, after listing fictional kings and queens I’m keeping it real this week (and also brief because it’s already half four on a Friday). We’ve just had the longest-reigning monarch in the country’s history. We’ve lived through an age, people; the Elizabethan Age. Well, I guess the Second Elizabethan Age (sidebar: I’ve noticed people – well, newspapers – have started referring to her as Elizabeth the Great. I wonder if that’ll stick. I’ve always been fascinated to discover when sobriquets started to solidify around a person, so it’ll be interesting to see if that’s how history records her; Elizabeth the Great. I mean, I’m old enough to remember when American news coverage kept referring to 9/11 as “Terrible Tuesday” so sometimes these things don’t puncture the consciousness in the way maybe they were intended. Anyway, where was I?). We already had an Elizabethan Age so I suppose this is the Second Elizabethan Age, but nevertheless: an Age. Capital-A, people.
So this week I’m celebrating my favourite people from that Age. Well, not really favourite people; I don’t know any of them. They might all be closet serial killers or jewel thieves or people who write “telly” as “tele”. And I’m specifically referring here to Elizabethans; that is, subjects of Queen Elizabeth II (aka The Great). So at first I basically thought this meant British, but I guess it means Commonwealth citizens; if Peter Jackson can get a knighthood he’s Elizabethan in my book.
Because I am who I am there aren’t any sportspeople on this list. I just don’t like sports as much as films and TV and whatnot. Not many scientists, either, for the most part, as I don’t really know enough about scientists and the wonderful science that they do. It’s basically entertainment people because I am who I am. And because they’re supposed to be Elizabethan it’s also people who came to prominence within that Age; so really from 1952 onwards. This has lead to a bit of head-scratching regarding, say, J.R.R. Tolkien, but in the end I decided that he was, I guess, a bit Georgian, or even Edwardian. Good Queen Liz had only been crowned a year when Lord of the Rings came out, after all, and he was already a success.
So anyway, what you have here are a bunch of people what did stuff what was good, and who did it after 1952. That’s it, that’s yer lot, now go and buy a bunch of commemorative coins. TTFN.
Tumblr media
The Beatles: oh, yes, right from the start I’m cheating again; but how in the hell do you pick one of these guys? Seriously, I’d say in the western world no group – and I mean that as “some people” not just “a band” – has influenced and altered culture quite so much. Who else can you say that about? Elvis Presley? George Lucas? Stan Lee? These guys, all four of them, redefined music and shifted culture into a “before” and “after”. And although they’re not all with us anymore they still rock.
Billy Connolly: I just love him. He’s hilarious, straddling the line between comedian and philosopher; he’s a great actor; he’s a prodigious artistic soul. he just seems like a really nice guy and exemplifies everything I think of as “Britishness” – kind, progressive, self-deprecating, cultured, and above all else possessed of a wry, detached distrust of authority.
Stephen Hawking: getting a bit serious for a sec, here we have someone who’s scientific theories and ability to harness them in popular discourse transcended academia. Basically he was a very good scientist who also became an icon of popular culture; who else can you say that about? Brian Cox? Tim Berners-Lee, maybe? And this is before we discuss his progressive attitudes and his position – undeniable – as a figurehead and role model for people with disabilities.
Emma Thompson: I don’t know why she isn’t even more famous. There’s nothing, it seems, she can’t do; arguably the best actress of her generation, she can sing, she’s a truly hilarious comedian, she’s a fantastic writer… she’s the sort of artistic polymath who should be ruling Hollywood. And yet she remains quintessentially British, where you could almost imagine her guesting on Coronation Street.
Neil Gaiman: in my book the best, and most consistently good, British writer of the last seventy years. But that might just be because my tastes lean to the supernatural, fantastical, and metatextual. So much of his stuff is just about fiction, but also an examination and redefinition of all kinds of fairy tales and legends and myths. And even when he’s writing something called American Gods it ends up feeling, somewhere deep in its core, a British text.
Peter Jackson: yep, see, we’re collecting ‘em from across the Commonwealth. Jackson, of course, is so Kiwi he’s even furry, but outside of his prodigious gifts as a filmmaker (blessed with an innate understanding of camera movement and story structure, as well as a dirty-fingernailed desire to just get stuck in and pull stuff together by hook or by crook) he managed to mount a spectacular, once-in-a-generation, lightning-in-a-bottle adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, probably the best book published since 1952.
Victoria Wood: obviously a tremendous comedian – she was just consistently funny – she was also a tremendous writer, capable of capturing the nuances of working-class British life in a way reminiscent of Mike Leigh or Alan Bennett. Dinnerladies – ostensibly a trad sitcom with trad sitcom jokes, albeit hilarious ones – also managed to be progressive and quietly radical and often bitingly sad. And she sang Let’s Do It.
Nick Park: the other greatest director, a charming little goof in the best British tradition, toiling away at an unfashionable art form and producing masterpiece after masterpiece after masterpiece. It’s not just that almost everything he’s done is a five-star classic, a redefinition of stop-motion animation; it’s not just the plethora of hilarious in-jokes and sight gags. It’s that actual, big-budget Hollywood action directors still cite the train chase from The Wrong Trousers as one of the best pieces of action cinema choreography of all time.
Lenny Henry: Henry began, for me, as a goofy, affable comedian; a kids’ TV star who made it big. A charming big-smiled fella who was lovable and funny in his own sketch shows and especially as the face and figurehead of Comic Relief. He has since not only established himself as an excellent actor (both comic and dramatic) but also become one of the most pronounced voices of activism and diversity in entertainment. And he’s just lovely isn’t he?
Julia Donaldson: it feels churlish to separate her from her collaborators – especially Axel Scheffler and Lydia Monks – but we must, if only because I’m already up to ten and I can’t fit ‘em all in. But out of all the children’s books out there, Donaldson’s stand out with their humour and warmth and her exquisite way with words. Trust me, it’s hard to write these sorts of things, and to craft such great turns of phrase and rhymes that are compelling, funny, often moving, and speak to little kids and their parents is something else. Even if I feel that damn mouse really has it coming to him. Maybe in Gruffalo 3.
God knows how many I’ve missed off. No Python! No Scotts – Ridders or Tony! None of the younger crop of dudes I love so much, from Ewan McGregor to Dev Patel to the Arctic Monkeys. No Professor X or Magneto - sorry, I meant no Stewart or McKellen. No Dench! No Bob Hoskins, Eddie Izzard, Bowie or Bond. But I guess that’s just because there are so many cool people to choose from. We rule.

'Baby Jane' was a UK number one single for which British singer?
Tumblr media
'Baby Jane' was a UK number one single in 1983 song for British singer Rod Stewart. As of July 2022, it remains his final UK number one single to date. The song was written by Stewart with Jay Davis and appeared on his 12th studio album, 'Body Wishes'.
Sir Roderick David Stewart (born 1945) is a British pop singer, known professionally as Rod Stewart. He is known for his distinctive raspy singing voice and has had 10 number-one albums and 31 top ten singles in the UK, six of which reached number one, including 'Baby Jane'. In 2007, Steward performed 'Baby Jane' at a concert held at Wembley Stadium in London to celebrate the life of Princess Diana, who died ten years previously. He also performed the songs 'Sailing' and 'Maggie May'.
Although best known as a solo artist, Stewart initially achieved success as a member of several groups. During the 1960s, he became a member of Steampacket, Shotgun Express, and the Jeff Beck Group. He then joined the Faces, whose bluesy rock became popular during the 1970s. Nonetheless, Stewart did not want to be constrained to a group format and pursued a solo career alongside performing with the Faces.
Stewart was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in 1994 and as a member of the Faces in 2012. He was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2007.

Paul McCartney McCartney I II III Box Set Releases August 5th, 2022
Tumblr media
No single musician is as revered or loved than Sir Paul McCartney. As a member of the greatest rock-n-roll band of all-time, The Beatles, the group single-handedly changed the landscape of music, fashion, and culture for generations.  Their influence is still felt today and will be for many years to come. McCartney has spun himself a multi-faceted career in music.  As a member of The Beatles, his group with wife Linda, Wings, and as a solo artist, McCartney has sold over 100 million albums and 100 million singles. He has achieved an incredible 22 Number 1 hits.  He has been awarded 60 gold albums and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II as Sir Paul McCartney on March 11, 1997, for his “services to music.”
Tumblr media
It's an impossible task to list all his accomplishments. His debut solo release, McCartney, was one of a kind.  Playing every instrument himself, he modestly recorded the tracks in secret at his home in St. John’s Wood in 1970. The masterpiece from that release, Maybe I’m Amazed (Written for his wife Linda – who passed in 1998) is one of the greatest love songs of all time. Paul still performs it to this day live in concert. His subsequent releases McCartney II (released in 1980, reached Number One in the U.K.), includes the classics, Coming Up, Waterfalls, and Temporary Secretary.  McCartney III (released in 2020), though more state-of-the-art than a living room recording, once again features McCartney on every instrument. Featuring, Find My Way, and Women and Wives, the release charted at Number One on the U.K.’s Official Album Charts and Number One on Billboard’s Top Album Sales Chart.
For the first time, Universal Music has brought all three unique releases together to celebrate the mastery of Paul McCartney. Featuring 35 songs in all, this release is a must have for every McCartney fan. Officially releasing on August 5th, 2022, the limited-edition box set is unlike any other.
