Something’s that’s been bothering me is that Flanagan seems to have completely forgotten about Jesper’s abilities.
In the first few books he is responsible for the sneaking and scouting missions. I’m especially talking about before the battle of Limmat. When him and Hal are preparing for the invasion, his abilities to be unseen is described similar to those of the rangers’s.
But then Lydia shows up and she takes over all scouting missions. Now, I’m not complaining about giving Lydia assignments (Flanagan’s inability to believe that she can be of any value to the crew when they are sailing is another rant).
But several times they want someone to go with her to “be the muscles” is case anything goes wrong. Most of the time that’s Hal. I understand he wants to survey the area because he’ll be the one to make the plans. But something Jesper should be the obvious choice.
Honestly, justice for Jesper whose main asset was forgotten after the second book.

The race for Andomal
This damn thing was so hard to compose I worked on it on and off for like 5 days. It's done, I tried my best to make it interesting, it would look cute next to the other poster.

I was rereading Brotherband Chronicles and I realized that it’s the only (fantasy) media that I can think of that actually acknowledges that poor eyesight is in fact a disability. Ingvar is a very interesting character because he shows how disabling poor vision can be without accommodations (aka glasses) but also isn’t reduced to a joke and is very capable on his own, he just needs accommodations (in this case, the tortoiseshell spectacles Hal makes)

I (finally) got around to reading Stern Chase and well… it was a book for sure!
I don’t know how to properly voice my thoughts, but it almost seemed like all of their personalities disappeared
Yeah, the Herons didn’t have much personality to begin with, but it’s just gone now

As someone who’s worked on a lot of ships I actually love Flanagan’s description of what Edvin’s does on the ship
Having the medic and the chef be the same person is very common. Their job is about making everyone else able to do their job to the fullest of their ability.
They are an essential part of the crew. A common saying is that it’s even more important for the crew to stay on the chef’s good side than on the captain’s good side. Because if you don’t, they’ll make food that no one likes and it will demoralized everyone
(On a ship you live for your next meal)
Anecdotally, my watch once ended up annoying the chef and I have never been on a more miserable trip
I don’t know if this makes much sense to anyone else but me. But Edvin is very close to my heart and I just want everyone to know how important it is to have someone like him in your crew
