“He might have been a rake and a rogue—he might still be a rake and a rogue—but clearly his behavior to those ends did not define the man. And the only objection Kate had to his marrying Edwina was... She swallowed painfully. There was a lump the size of a cannonball in her throat. Because deep in her heart, she wanted him for herself.”

The other thing Catherine loved about going outside was the fact that she could go see her best friend, Kate. They bonded over many things, and the one thing was that they were both sick. Kate’s father was a doctor and they had the same disease, so he worked for both of them. This town was close and they all cared for each other, so it’s like everyone was a part of a big family.
“What do you want to play today?” Catherine asked Kate. They were sitting on Kate’s bed and were thinking of what to do to start the play date.
“Hmmm. How about hide and seek? You’re always great at hiding!”
Catherine smiled and nodded excitedly.
“Yeah! Do you wanna count or should I?”
“I’ll count. I wanna see if I can find you quicker than last time!”
Both of the girls giggled to each other. Catherine left to go and hide. She looked around the house for a good spot and decided to hide in the closet in the living room. It was one meant for coats and jackets (and sometimes shoes), and she was small enough to fit in there. She could still hear Kate counting down to 1 in the other room.
“6...5....4...3...2...1! Here I come!” Kate yelled with a giggle and Catherine could hear her footsteps. Kate’s bedroom was about 10 feet away from the living room, so it might take her awhile before she decides to go to the living room. Catherine waits in the silence for around 2 minutes, before she hears a whisper.
“Hey,” said a soft, girl sounding voice. She assumed it was Kate at first, so she didn’t move or make a sound. However, the voice then became a little rougher.
“I know you can hear me.”
Catherine began to feel a little uncomfortable, but she pushed it off. She hated the dark and assumed it was her fears getting to her. She took in a deep breath and let it out silently. But then she felt a tap on her shoulder, which caused her to panic and scramble out the room. As soon as she did, she stood up and looked into the darkness to see nothing (and no one) there. She let out a sigh, but then screamed as she felt someone run into her.
“Found ya!” Catherine turned around to only see Kate there. “What’s wrong? Are you okay?” Kate’s voice was filled with worry.
“Yeah, sorry. You just startled me.” Catherine decided to not tell Kate about what happened. She told herself it was nothing serious, just her fears getting to her.
Kate and Catherine both then looked towards the kitchen (where the back door was) and heard Kate’s father and another man come inside the house. Catherine listened and realized the man instantly.
“Apollo!” Catherine said as she ran over to him and gave him a hug. He let out a little ‘oof’ and a laugh.
“Hey, Catherine. I didn’t know you were gonna be here.”
“I’m best friends with Kate! I didn’t know you were gonna be here. I was gonna go see you later today!” Catherine sounded excited and surprised. Her thoughts about what happened completely gone from her mind.
“Yes. Dear old Apollo here is going to help me with my research for you both,” Kate’s father said with a proud smile. He didn’t have many people helping him, so he was always happy when he got more people to help him cure his daughters disease or make it better at all. Kate smiled at Apollo and reached her hand out for a handshake.
“My names Kate! Its great to meet you, Apollo!” Apollo smiled at Kate and shook her hand.
“It’s nice to meet you, Kate.”

2 months had passed since Apollo joined Kate’s father in his research. He actually liked getting to know the man and liked seeing Catherine every now and then.
And he almost keeps calling her Rose but he catches himself before he does. Catherine just smiles when he almost does and laughs it off. She doesn’t know that everytime she looks at him with her blue eyes, he gets caught in memories and times when they first met. However, he still makes memories with her now. Whenever he does see her in the market, he plays the Harp for her and he gives her lessons. But there’s something else that he loves hearing other than the harp and her.
He loves the way she plays the violin.
She began to learn how to play the violin, and she sounded great to him already. She was doing slow songs for right now, but he knew she would do great songs in the future, so he supported her all the way. Just like her mother did.
And sometimes he’d see her in the market playing. She didn’t want any tips or anything. The only thing she wanted was for people to hear the beautiful music that she tried to play and some compliments. He’d whistle along to her playing and if she heard him, she’d smile at him. They were already good friends despite knowing each other for only 2 months, but he remembers that that’s how it was with her in the beginning. She immediately wanted to be friends and he’s glad she kept that want all the till now.
The other thing he noticed when he did first meet her and her mother, was the fact that Vanessa was nowhere to be seen. Not everyone gets to come back, and he felt even sadder everytime he looked at Catherine. She and her sister looked similar, and so he saw Rose but also Vanessa, and it hurt still.
However, he pushed it away and worked on finding a cure in anyway he could.
.
.
Another 2 months passed and things weren’t looking good. Catherine and Kate were getting worse. They were feeling dizzy whenever they stood up, they could barely keep food down, and their limbs felt so heavy they said. Apollo and Kate’s father rushed for a cure, doing everything they could.
Apollo always visited Catherine, sitting beside her bed, trying to comfort her. Her mother was there as well, not daring to leave her daughters side.
“Momma, will I be okay?” Catherine looked at her mother, and she looked desperate for an answer. Her mother nodded and reached for her daughters hand. She gave it a tight squeeze.
“Of course you will. You’ll get better, I promise.” Her mother tried to hold back her shaking voice, but it wasn’t working. Her mother didn’t have anyone else. She had her daughter in her family and that was it. Even if she had more people, she couldn’t lose her daughter. She couldn’t. Because of her getting worse, Apollo worked more and more, sometimes not even going back to Olympus. He knew it was risky and the gods and goddesses would wonder, but he couldn’t help it. He wanted to help her get better, to help her get away from a fate that was quickly approaching.
And then one day, they ran out of supplies. Apollo offered to go and get supplies from a town not far off and he told Catherine goodbye and left.
Catherine didn’t know why, but while he was gone, she felt lonely. She had her mother and she loved her and thanked the gods for her, but without Apollo there she didn’t feel good. It felt as if something was missing, and something was. She pushed it off and continued to sleep her days away.
However, as he was gone, she and Kate got worse and worse. Sometimes Catherine could barely keep her eyes open. She felt like she couldn’t breathe sometimes. And then one day, it was too much for her body to take.
Her mother had just woken up that day and was getting ready to go and feed Catherine. She got up, got dressed, made breakfast, and headed towards Catherine’s room. However, when she gently shook her daughter to wake her up, there was no movement. Her eyes didn’t even flutter at all and she noticed she wasn’t breathing. Her worst nightmare had come to life.
She lost her daughter. She was gone.
And Apollo had no idea as he went to the next town over. He had no idea that she had already passed, but he found out in the worst way.
Apollo was walking back to his horse when he saw a little girl in an open field. She had pink hair which was odd to him. He then began to worry if she was lost or anything, so he went up to her.
“Ma’am, are you lost?”
The little girl turned towards him and he saw her red eyes. Red eyes of something that wasn’t human. He wasn’t Hades, but he knew an underworld creature when he saw it, but it was in a disguise.
“Oh no, Apollo. I’m not lost, but I think someone else is.” The creatures voice sounded like a woman and man were talking at the same time. It mixed together and made chills run down Apollo’s spine.
“What do you mean?” Apollo took a few steps back.
“Some little girl is lost out there. She can’t seem to...find the light, if ya know what I mean,” the ‘girl’ smiled at Apollo, but it was sinister and a teasing smile. His heart dropped and he got on his horse and went back to Catherine as fast as he could.
But he was too late.
Once he arrived there, he ran into Catherine’s house, only to find her mother sitting beside her at the bed, clutching her hand, as she sobbed her heart out. Apollo’s heart dropped as well because it happened again. He tried his hardest, but fate got to her first. He walked to where Catherine’s mother was and sat on the floor next to her, holding the same hand she was holding. Her mother kept sobbing and he began to as well.
He lost her again. He felt like he let her die even though he tried so hard. His heart once again felt numb and broken.
.
.
Once the funeral happened, he stayed until Catherine’s mother died. Something inside of him told him that she’d follow soon after, and he was right. Barely 3 months later, her mother died of unknown causes. He wept for her as well. He felt broken and as he went back to Olympus, he put on a smile and pretended that he was fine so they didn’t suspect a thing, but he was breaking on the inside.
.
.
He opened his eyes to darkness. He had gone to sleep one night and suddenly awoke to darkness, but he knew he was still asleep. He looked around until the girl he saw in the field appeared in front of him.
“Hello, Apollo,” the voice sounded the same and scary.
His face turned to a scowl. “What do you want?”
“I just wanna talk. Can’t we talk like sensible people?”
“Dont talk about sensible to me, creature.”
“Ow! I’m wounded,” the creature laughed at Apollo’s harsh words.
“What did you do to Rose?”
“Well, I cursed her from the beginning. Then the thing with Caleb and now the disease. Well, I didn’t necessarily cause the disease. The curse did.”
“Aren’t you the curse?”
“Nah. I’m the package that comes with it. I watch every move, everything that happens, and I wait until the right moment...”. The creature stopped and just smiled at Apollo.
“Well, I’m gonna leave you alone now. Think about what’s happened and everything,” the creature said as it turned away and began strolling away.
“Wait-”
Apollo reached out to it, but pulled his hand back once he got shocked when he touched its shoulder.
“No, no, no. Youre gonna sit here alone, mister!” The creature then slowly faded away and Apollo was left with the information he gained.
