Those who feel the smallest smidge of guilt or repentance stays the Slasher's hand. Those who try to abuse this to avoid themget gutted like a fish even more viciously.
And the only "Final Girl/Boy" who makes it out alive is the one who renounces those beliefs entirely or accepts responsibility and truly repents, spending the entire film realizing how full of shit and how fundamentally evil those beliefs really were, even though it means losing all of their "friends" who refuse to change.
But the specter of the slasher is always there, always reminding them that they can always backslide at any time, that change is constant and personal growth needs to be maintained forevermore.
Honestly that's a pretty good concept for a slasher. Kind of a twist on the whole "purity" bullshit that got accidentally baked into it.

When writing love interests, be it male or female, don't think of them as love interests. Figure out who they are at first, what their personality is first, then how its compatible with the character you want to pair them with. Put them in situations, figure out how they react then take your time to build them up. They don't necessarily have to kiss at the end of story. Sometimes a little tease goes a long way but don't do it for too long or readers will get bored. Don't think of two characters fiy getting together as an 'end' but more like the beginning of the next phase of their relationship. Maybe the conflict comes from the two of themgetting together.
Don't pair characters just cuz they're 'canon'. Be critical. Study both individually, see from both perspectives and figure out why or why not they work together. This doesn't mean you have to break them up if you're not feeling it. Maybe you just need to find an angle that works for you.
Just my $0.02 as someone who is often frustrated with how romance is handled in popular fiction.

The front door isn’t even locked, which is unusual for Sid, but Geno makes sure to lock it behind him. Geno turns on the flashlight on his phone to see—if anyone’s wandered in, they haven’t taken anything, at least.
There are three places Sid could realistically be, and none of them are where he should be, which is in bed, resting. Geno starts with the living room, which is empty. He’s also not in the exercise room or the ice rink, and Geno’s starting to wonder if maybe Sid really isn’t home until he decides to check the bedroom.
The door’s closed, and Geno knocks very quietly, just barely rapping his knuckles against the door frame.
“Sid?” he whispers, and he can hear sheets rustling from the other side of the door. “I come in?”
“Geno?” Sid says. “No, just—go, you don’t need to be here.”
“Sid, you been out of bed at all this week?”
There’s a pause. “I go to the kitchen when I’m hungry.”
It’s worse than Geno had thought, then. It’s hard to ever keep Sid in his bed even when he’s sick, so if he’s willingly staying in bed for a week… “I come in?”
Sid waits so long to answer that Geno almost comes in anyway. “Okay.”
When Geno opens the door, it takes his eyes a few moments to adjust—Sid has the blackout curtains drawn, and between that and the dark of the rest of the house, no light has gotten in. He’d even apparently unplugged the TV—there’s not even the little red light indicator that the TV is off.
“How you feel?” Geno asks when he can finally see well enough to walk over to Sid’s bed. “Dumb question, sorry. Of course you’re not feel good.”
It isn’t until Geno sits on Sid’s bed and is only a few feet away from him that he can see Sid’s face, and he almost wishes he hadn’t.

As many times as they’ve done this together, nursing Sid through a concussion, there’s always been some kind of light at the end of the tunnel. Until now, Sid’s always been young enough that a concussion was just a mild setback; he’s always had more than enough time in his career left to play.
But they’re both in their late thirties now, and they’re more aware than ever that the clock is ticking. Any injury that wold have set them back most of the season in their twenties can take them out for good now.
And nobody’s more aware of that than Sid.
Even in the limited light, Geno can see the tear tracks down Sid’s face; his hair a curly, knotted mess. He smells like he hasn’t showered in days, and his eyes—the brown eyes Geno had always been mesmerized by, that had always seemed to be smiling no matter what—his eyes are glassy and flat.
“Sid,” Geno whispers, and Sid rests his forehead on his arm.
“I’m done, Geno. This is it for me.”
