Let’s talk about Sonic Underground

Ah, Sonic Underground, how I remember thee well. When I was around 9-10 it would always be on TV in the mornings before school. I was already a Sonic nut by then thanks to Heroes and my Dad’s old copies of the Genesis games but it was a mixture of this and Sonic X that got me super interested in the lore of Sonic. Underground is incredibly nostalgic for me but despite that when I try to watch Underground nowadays it’s a bit …painful.

Look, I have a wee soft spot for Underground but however much I like certain aspects of the show, objectively it wasnt the best show ever and before I start talking about the cool stuff let me get some of the bad things out of the way.

• With the exception of the opening (we’ll get to that later) the animation quality was truly abysmal.

Like Jesus Christ what even is this??

• While I don’t mind Jaleel White playing both Sonic and Manic, why on Earth did he voice Sonia as well?! It actually baffles me.

• The character designs, especially background/secondary characters are a bit…

…well ugly. Maybe they’d be cool if this wasn’t a Sonic cartoon; but because of it the hedgehogs stick out like a sore thumb.

• I didn’t really care for Sleet and Dingo as villains.

Nothing else really to say there they just bored me. Well, Sleet was voiced by Maurice la Marche, so that’s kinda cool.

BUT. Sonic Underground is one of those things that while its execution isn’t great, the concepts and ideas that it brings are pretty cool.

• The theme song is awesome, and I think I actually like it a smidge more than SatAM’s theme.

The opening animation is also pretty neat, the animation’s decent, some of the transitions are cool and it does a good job of giving a plot synopsis so new viewers can jump in at any point.

• Sonic having siblings is super interesting. He already has an older brother dynamic with Tails but a more equal dynamic with Sonia and Manic is also intriguing. Also, I’m always interested in ‘Multiples’ in media

(Dipper/Mabel, Mario and Luigi, Huey/Dewey/Louie etc), due to personal experiences and I always welcome more.

• Sonic being born a prince is a bit weird. I’m not completely opposed (see King Sonic rant here) but whatever, if a flying pig flew over a frozen hell and we somehow got a reboot of this show, I’d be curious to see what direction they could go with this (however they would do it, it’d be better than Penders)

• The medallions.

Holy fucking shit. Magic instruments that double as weapons? That is such a bitchin’ concept and I am genuinely surprised that there hasn’t been anything else (that I know of anyway) that’s used that. I would love to know more about what the medallions are exactly and where they came from.

• I absolutely adore Manic. And if you search through his Tumblr tag you’ll see that I’m not alone. I’m not exactly sure what makes him great, but I think it’s got something to do with the complexity of his character- he’s a thief but does so due to his upbringing and out of necessity. A bit of an Aladdin really, a ‘diamond in the rough’ His character design’s not bad as well, once translated into the typical Sega Sonic style.

• Although it had similarities with SatAM with the whole freedom fighters thing (and I guess Sonic Forces now), Underground had a different, yet interesting direction of keeping the general population un-robotisized (with particular favoritism to aristocrats), creating a political message compared to SatAM’s ecological one.

• Its cancellation before the triplets reunite with their mother was complete bullshit but if you want some sort of conclusion take a look at SonicFF’s comic of the same name, (Link here)

which begins shortly after the ‘council of four’ is formed and ties Underground to the games. I must warn you though that it hasn’t been updated in years :(

The highly popular series 'Christmas with Sonic’ also includes Sonia/Manic/Aleena as Sonics family, however, it’s not connected to Underground, they’re a typical suburban family rather than royalty.

I really do have a soft spot for Sonic Underground and if it weren’t for my busy schedule and my lack of knowledge and skills when it comes to comic making, I’d love to make my own continuation of the series. But hey, I can post some ideas I have and maybe inspire someone else. :)

You know that Segregation Twins AU seems interesting. I mean, even if we don't know how Nora happened yet, I wonder how she and Steven would play off each other.

Oh yeah I think it could lead to some interesting places too! For some reason I’ve always loved the “long lost sibling you didn’t know you had” trope and for it being a factor in both sides. And hm I imagine Nora to be the introvert to Steven’s extrovert, or essentially, the Dipper to his Mabel (only Steven and Nora would be about on the level in terms of intelligence) Still, she’d be more quiet and less adventurous, but she’d also be a bit more of a creative type than an intellectual (very into art, drawing, ect, while Steven’s more into music). So their dynamic would be pretty sweet and cute and they’d be less prone to sibling squabbles than Dipper and Mabel, but they’d still have them on occasion of course.
