My predictions for Legends ZA starters-
Grookey
Fuecoco
Piplup
And instead of (or perhaps in addition to?) giving us regional forms for their final evo, they're going to give them mega evolutions

Objectively correct pokemon randomiser options
Randomisers have become a pretty popular thing in the pokemon community in the last couple years, especially with the the newer version of the UPR by Ajarmar allowing Gen VI/VII games to enter the mix more easily. Thus I present to those unfamiliar, the objectively best opinions about how to make your randomiser fun and not shitty.
You can find the current versions of the Universal Pokemon Randomiser here.
Tumblr media
Base Stats: Look I’ve tried doing randomised base stats and it’s kinda miserable. Don’t recommend it, if only so you still have an idea what you’re working with.
EXP Curves: This one’s up to you, to be honest, but it is 100% necessary to activate some version of this if you want to randomise evolutions- otherwise, a Pokemon can only evolve into something with the same EXP curve, severely limiting what it can end up being.
Types: Similar to Base Stats. I don’t really enjoy having to relearn every single pokemon’s types, especially when randomisation means you don’t have design cues to go off.
Abilities: Surely keep it all random. Half the fun of this is seeing some random thing end up with Huge Power or something. With that in mind, I’d allow Wonder Guard, but it can lead to unwinnable situations earlygame and that’s no fun for anyone. Also, I’m not sure what the point of “follow mega evolutions” is seeing as half of them normally change abilities anyway.
Evolutions: Randomising this one can be fun, but it isn’t something I usually run with. Having a mon just chain evolutions over and over is very silly- surely leave limit evolutions unchecked. Regardless, I recommend changing Impossible Evolutions in every case just so you don’t have to finangle with emulator trading to get your Alakazam or whatever.
Tumblr media
Starters: If you click unchanged I’m wondering what the actual point of this is for you. Completely vs basic with 2 evos is up to you, though normally I do the latter- I don’t want to start with something completely overpowered. The custom option is great if you just don’t change anything else, making it probably the easiest way to make a solo run/custom starter game possible.
Statics: Similar Strength is a new option here. Similar to the last one, I think it’s up in the air whether complete randomness or swapping standards/legends is better, as while Rayquaza being a Metapod is hilarious, it also means you’ve just wasted a lot of time.
In-Game Trades: I mean it’s not like you usually go for these anyway, so why not, give it a go, fuck it. It can look real funny sometimes.
Tumblr media
Move Data: It’s like with typing man. I’ve seen people have fun with this, but I don’t want to have to keep notes when I’m doing my randomiser, yknow. I just don’t have fun with this one.
Movesets: Random same type is my usual, but I notice it tends to lead to getting not a whole lot of coverage. Game-breaking moves is mostly just Dragon Rage, considering how broken that is earlygame. It’s worth noting that randomizing moves at all has a check to ensure every mon starts with at least one usable attacking move, so I tend not to bother forcing it to have more moves or forcing damaging moves. Evolution Moves is a Gen 7 exclusive thing, and I kinda like the idea, so fuck it why not.
Tumblr media
Trainers: The first Big One. Random and Type Themed are both viable, and I think even distribution just makes it so you aren’t fighting 100 Pidgeys or whatever. I like the rival carrying the starter. Similar Strength and Don’t use Legendaries are for cowards. I like bumping up levels a bit since randomly having legends everywhere means you are getting more EXP yourself, and forcing fully evolved makes sure it’s a bit more challenging. Double Battle Mode is something I haven’t tried but I’m keen to. Shinies and Trainer (class) names are fun just aesthetic so why not- its worth noting you can meddle with the settings so you can add in your own custom names and such.
Totems: I don’t have any experience with Alola randomisers at all, actually, so this is just my best guess.
Tumblr media
Wilds: The other Big One. Catch-em-all mode is good if you’re intending to actually complete the dex, and such. Time Based Encounters are fun if you’re playing, like, casually? But most of the time that isn’t what you’re doing in a rando. Setting minimum catch rate is something I do if only so things like starters or Beldum don’t have stupid low rates, but I prefer not to bump it up too much.
Tumblr media
TMs/HMs/Tutors: Levelup move sanity just ensures that it can learn the move by TM/Tutor if it gets it already by level. Random same type just makes the most sense to me, though leaving it unchanged can be funny- whatever Toxic or Return gets replaced by are just learnable by everything, for example. Full Compatibility just feels too powerful to me.
Tumblr media
Items: RNGsus take the wheel. There really isn’t much more to do with this.
Special Shops: This refers to the second shop assistant in some Marts in Generations 4+. Having some of the spicier options available is good, and I don’t want to see regular shit in there, so I’ve given these options. I do think that having all the evolution items available somewhere is for the best.
Tumblr media
Misc: Instant Text is cool and good, we’ve all seen the plot dialogue before. Banning Lucky Egg is for cowards. All Wilds calling allies is a Gen VII exclusive and is also obnoxious as shit, don’t use it if you like catching things. Don’t revert temporary forms is hilarious, it means you can just catch Megas and such in the wild and have them actually work.

Pokémon SoulSilver Randomized Nuzlocke [Part 1]
Since I haven’t fully learned from my mistakes, hey! It’s time for another Nuzlocke. With extra Randomizer action for reasons that are going to be very apparent as I go through this set’s rules.
I’m going to try what this person on the internet calls a Chainlocke, though with slight alterations for the sake of sanity; basic idea is that my catch Types have to be linked. If I catch a Grass/Poison pokemon, my next option has to have one of those in common.
That gets thorny really fast, which I guess is the point, but I’m more about wacky fun than serious challenges. So to make things more entertaining, I will be randomizing every pokemon in the wild, as well as NPC gifts and trades. All the other Trainers keep their original stuff. I get to be special.
So. Rules:
Only the first viable pokemon of each route may be caught.
Gift pokemon are cool to use.
In-game trades are also cool.
‘Viable’ in this case means that they must have a Type in common with the most recent caught pokemon.
The starter will be starting that chain despite not technically being caught by me. Because I feel like it.
Each pokemon must receive a nickname.
If a pokemon faints, it is considered dead. It will go in an appropriately named box in the PC.
In the event of a team wipe, the run will continue with whatever’s left (alive) in the PC.
And that’s about it. Let’s kick it.
Tumblr media
No.
I can’t remember if this version does the all-caps for names or not. In any case, this protagonist avatar will take on the name Sunny. Because I am in a warm and welcoming mood, ready to make all the new creatures I encounter my friends.
Tumblr media
I love how they have Lyra use the mail system.
Someone has to.
It certainly won’t be anyone playing these games.
Okay, based on how Lyra’s Marill is discussed, human names don’t get the all-caps treatment, but pokemon do. What does this mean for my nicknaming schemes? No idea. The hour is late and I don’t care enough.
Tumblr media
-rubs hands together-
Tumblr media
Hmmmm.
Tumblr media
...
Dude.
Get out.
Tumblr media
Hmmmm.
I can’t pick Cyndaquil, because what even is the point if I do that. Sableye I’ve never been so interested in as a true companion. Dewgong is fully evolved, and I hate starting out with that.
However.
I never get to use Dewgong.
Seel is never anywhere convenient.
DEWGONG WELCOME TO THE TEAM!
Tumblr media
Shaped like a friend.
I haven’t worked out any particular theme for this run. I can name her whatever I want. I think I shall call her Chance.
Tumblr media
Look at how cute she is. She is adorable. Sassy and highly persistent. I declare her perfect. She also knows Headbutt! That matters beyond being a cool move in this version! Much squeeing! She also knows Growl, Signal Beam, and Icy Wind.
My next pokemon will have to be Water or Ice. It will probably be Water, thanks to Water being absurdly common. That’s cool. I like Water pokemon.
And so, without yet being able to catch anything, I head out into the world. Running my obligatory fetch quest for Professor Elm.
Huh, a Smoochum says hello. That’s a good thing to know for later. But what’s in the Headbutt tree?
...A Hoothoot. Sigh. Well, one less thing to worry about when finding pokemon.
Weedle also lurks in the grass.
Tumblr media
Yay. Gotta go fast.
Can I buy poke balls yet?
No. Sad face.
The next route has Kricketot. Did I check the similar strength button by accident?
Then suddenly, Grumpig! Okay, sweet. Just a few Buggy coincidences. Gligar is also here.
Tumblr media
Literally have never heard of you. You have a boring name. No one should ever copy it ceaselessly for a gag that no one sees any value in.
Tumblr media
Hello, a wild challenger approaches! With his super duper Totodile! Headbutt it, Chance. Headbutt it into submission. Good girl.
Tumblr media
Uh. There’s not enough room for it.
Tumblr media
Perfect.
I love how Silver’s most defining feature is his red hair.
After a short visit home to tell our mom we are far too irresponsible to be trusted with all of the money we’re going to earn from mugging other children, plus a short tutorial on catching things, we can finally get started!
Smoochum is the only thing available in the routes we’ve visited so far, but I haven’t checked out the northern one right outside the starting town yet.
But the walking takes the decision out of my hands! We encounter a level 4 Smoochum, and as per the rules, that is what I have to go for. Lest I kill the route.
...
I killed the Smoochum.
I guess that answers my question about its Typing. Ruh roh. Signal Beam was a mistake. For multiple reasons, now that I’m taking a second to think about it. Whoops. Any game that requires me to think is screwed from the start, honestly.
So now we search for something else to catch.
Route 46? Be nice?
Carvanha! That’s a Water! Can catch!
In theory. It’s broken out of two pokeballs. It’s also level 2, so I don’t think I can risk attacking it.
.I’m going to run out of balls, aren’t I?
I think I have to risk an Icy Wind. I’m on my last poke ball. I don’t really want to leave it purely up to the mood of the RNG.
Tumblr media
Chance apparently doesn’t want friends.
She got a critical hit.
Two dead routes! Okay!
Still needing a Water or Ice Type!
Also more Poke Balls!
One of those problems I can fix. As for the other, inb4 the Mystery Egg and whatever I get from Bill are the only other teammates Chance ever has.
We march through the trainers between us and the next town. Certain of nothing but Chance’s ability to murder them all.
Route 31 has an Elekid as the first thing I see and the rules say I can’t catch it. What horrible person came up with this. Seviper and Lopunny are also here. Those I care less about.
Dark Cave? Help? Mayhaps?
Tumblr media
A Golbat appears.
Okay.
Before we think too hard on that, I’ve gotta say that I do love how gen 4 does the caves. They are very gorgeously cavernous, and the few times I bother to think about the background art, I enjoy walking through them.
But yeah, is there anything in this cave that is not a Golbat?
Route 31 has a Butterfree.
These are things that do not help me.
The person who usually gives you an Onix for a Bellsprout in whatever this city is (Violet) offers a Corphish for a Kecleon. Things to keep in mind if I ever find a Kecleon. That I can catch.
Tumblr media
In no version of this game have I ever done this egg thing. I was unaware there even was an egg thing, since anything that requires me to pick the right word out of the hat of words bores me to tears. Then I started watching too many people play Pokemon games on the internet.
-Googles how to get egg-
So normally, you can get a Mareep, Wooper, or Slugma. In the spirit of the Chainlocke, even though I said gifts were cool, we’ll take the Wooper egg. Vote now on whether or not it’ll actually be a Wooper. I don’t know how to use the Randomizer.
Tumblr media
Hm. Iiiiiiinteresting.
Chance, Headbutt some trees on the off chance that a Water pokemon falls out, please.
It’s a Hoothoot.
I get the feeling that the Randomizer settings didn’t care about the pokemon found through Headbutting.
Route 32. Help.
Gligar. That is not help.
Rhydon is not help either. Likewise Torchic.
SQUIRTLE. THAT IS HELP.
Tumblr media
...
...
...
Chance.
Why are you getting so many critical hits against your friends. Do you not want friends. Have I raised you to be so antisocial.
-sigh- Route 32 declared dead.
Ruins of Alph? Maybe you have someone Chance likes?
...
Why is Gligar everywhere.
I guess. I will go to the tower. With Chance. Just the two of us.
Plus the Gloom egg, which is looking like a very likely candidate for the only friend Chance will ever have. Besides the Mystery Egg we don’t have yet.
(Also Rock Smash HM get. Yaaaaay.)
Tumblr media
Local level 11 Dewgong beats up 3 year-olds.
So many dead Bellsprout.
I haven’t run into any wild pokemon here, yet. Sadness. We will never know which new friend Chance was going to kill next.
SURPRISE!
It’s Medicham.
Chance kills it.
Partially because I can’t catch it anyway, partially because that is just what Chance does. Her sassiness belies her murderous intent.
Flash obtained with little fuss, and time to move on to Falkner. He of the coolest name. Yet another Gym Leader I wanted to be as a child. Even if he uses nothing but birds. Falkner is just the coolest name.
Oh, and it looks like there’s also Roselia in this tower.
I can’t do anything about it, but that’s nice.
Tumblr media
I love how each generation of pokemon decides the Gyms need to be more extra.
They’re right and they should say it.
-five seconds later- Well that went by quickly. Good girl, Chance. Your murder spree continues. And our prize? Picking up the Mystery Egg! Which gets to be a genuine mystery for now! Chance! You might have a friend! In pure spite of your best efforts!
Time to spend an hour doing nothing but walking. I normally wouldn’t be so interested in hatching the eggs, but. I would kind of like to have a promise of Chance not being completely alone this entire game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One down! His name is Cloud! He is... also Sassy (Chance, is this why you let him stay), level 1, and alert to sounds!
Tumblr media
!
whatisitwhatisitwhatisitwhatisit
Tumblr media
...Wow. Something I actually could have gotten legitimately in this Chainlocke. In theory. In a world where Chance is of slightly different temperament.
Her name shall be Sleet. She is Quiet and likes to run.
Hm.
I remain unsure if I’m going to actually use either of these new friends. The spirit of what I’m going for with this doesn’t really work with me just being handed two random Official Teammates. I might change my mind after a few more routes of things not going well for me, but for now, I think I’ll mostly stick to me and Chance.
..Though before I do..
They’re both level 1. I can be nice and not set them up for death. They can make it to level 5 before we say a cordial farewell. I can grind in this game. I can be nice.
-ten minutes later-
-tfw Ivysaur also lives on Route 32 because Route 32 is starter central-
Niceness done, let’s get on the road.
The road takes us, and our level 17 Dewgong, to Union Cave.
Tumblr media
If you squint, this looks like fanart of a sleeping Sandslash.
Will we find the Water or Ice pokemon our team longs for here????
Tumblr media
You have got to be fucking kidding me.
Uh.
Let me look up the rules for evolving Feebas in this gen. Because Feebas is pure Water. If I can’t evolve it, I’m better off killing it so I have more options available with what I can catch.
...
The internet says I need eight massages from Daisy (Blue’s sister. in Pallet Town.) to max its Beauty so it can evolve.
Chance. just. just do the thing. we all know how this ends.
So dies Union Cave.
Awww, how cute. A Shaymin. Now just one of the many corpses littered at Sunny’s feet. Hariyama is also here. A floor below, it’s the return of Grumpig. Plus Yanmega for the first time. Girafarig.
Tumblr media
-SIGH-
Route 33. Do you want to save us?
Weezing.
WHISCASH. GIMME. CHANCE, SWAP OUT AND LET CLOUD HELP.
Tumblr media
AT LONG LAST.
WE HAVE.
THE CHAINLOCKE’S FIRST CATCH.
FLUDD, WELCOME TO THE TEAM!
NEXT CATCH?
WATER OR GROUND!
LET’S END IT THERE WHILE THINGS ARE STILL GOOD.

Settle in for a bit of a post, kids – time for Linkara to talk about some pokeymanz.
So as I’ve stated on numerous occasions, when I first started playing Pokémon, it was on an emulator. I was young, I didn’t have money, and it was rare for my parents to spend any money on video games or video game consoles (we had PCs, if we wanted to game, plenty of good games out for PC). I would eventually get a Gameboy Pocket and a proper copy of Pokémon Blue, but when I started? Emulation was the way in.
Now of course being young and stupid and not being able to foresee problems in the future, I did not think to KEEP the save files in those ROMs, never figuring that I’d still want to have those Pokémon or even know how to transfer them over to a proper cartridge like I do now. As such, they have many, many times been saved over, deleted, and lost. Still, my computer has been built on top of itself a few times over, to the point where I do still find files from 2001 or the like if I dig deep enough. So occasionally, on a whim, I will go through the old emulator files I have to see if I can find an old save file of one of my original playthroughs. It’s a hopeless endeavor and I’ve done it multiple times now and it never yields results.
So during one of these efforts, I stumble upon my Pokémon Sapphire ROM. As a reminder there, much like with the Gameboy games, I didn’t have a Gameboy Advance until muuuuch later (and an SP at that) and my fandom in Pokémon had fallen off the map by the early 2000s, so when Ruby and Sapphire came out, I didn’t even really pay attention to it. Then, on a whim, I decided to get the ROM for Sapphire and play it. For the record, I was not a fan. It wasn’t that it was terrible, just that the Pokémon for Gen 3 didn’t really do anything for me. I played through it as best as I could, eventually beating the Elite 4 MOSTLY because I didn’t know much about the game and assumed that, like Gold/Silver, I’d be able to travel back to Johto after I beat the Elite 4 and play through a second region like in those games. Hell, there even seemed to be two ports that served no other purpose in the game (whooo, you can sail between them… when you could also just Fly…), but of course to my disappointment that was not the case. I was grumbly about it, did some Gameshark codes in the emulator to get a team of legendaries, then a team of Pokémon from Gens 1 and 2 that I liked, but in the end just gave up on it and moved on.
So on a whim, I load up the Sapphire ROM and look through some of the save states. I find the legendary one, I find the one with Gen 1/2 Pokémon… aaaand then I find a playthrough of my original team. This was Pre-Elite 4, but after I had reached Evergrande City, so I was clearly just training for the Elite 4 at that point. So here they are – the six Pokémon that I had trained to be my team in a game I didn’t really like all that much. This was the earliest team of Pokémon that I had ever raised that were still available. The save file was from 2003. They were almost fifteen years old. They had just been sitting here, waiting. Their future had been erased. Their only fate was to sit and wait to finish the game when that was never going to happen, never going to continue, hoping that their trainer would finish the job that he had started.
That was unacceptable.
I may not have liked Gen 3 that much, but dang it, these were my first ones from it, and I’ll be damned if I was going to let them spend another day there instead of fulfilling their destiny. I fired up a bunch of the equipment that I had gotten for the Gen 1/2 trade-up video (some of it was in disrepair, like the GBA Flash cart, so I used the DS emulator trading option I described in the video to get them) and got these bad boys up to Alpha Sapphire.
Hell yeah. Not only are these six going to beat the Elite 4, they’re going to beat a TOUGHER Elite 4 – the one for the remake games, since obviously I had already beaten Alpha Sapphire (I liked Alpha Sapphire more, but that team was 5/6 made of Pokémon from other generations – my starter was a Zubat – just wanted a team of Pokémon I had always wanted to try). Let me introduce you to these dudes.
Back in the day, I didn’t nickname my Pokémon – thought it was dumb. I’m older now and I LOVE nicknaming them. Gives them more character and uniqueness. First up – Sceptimus. I’m not particularly fond of any of Gen 3’s starters, which is a shame since they’re all good, so at the time I went with the one I disliked least, which was Treecko. Nowadays while I hold no particular attachment to them, I do still appreciate Sceptile’s badass tail and leaf blade arms. And of course now in Alpha Sapphire, he’s a friggin’ DRAGON, too.
Next – Sniperbird. A lot of times the token bird of the generation ends up on the team, usually as a well-balanced Flying-type and this Swellow is no exception. The name comes from a bit in Birdemic where twice a random bird just straight up swoops on and kills people with one shot. I affectionately referred to it both times as Sniperbird. Now look at this Swellow – tell me you can’t see this thing flying in and killing you in one hit.
Third – MAKIT. This one, as you can tell by the original trainer name is an in-game trade for a Slakoth. Most would probably keep the Slakoth to get a Slaking, but at the time, knowing nothing about the game, I didn’t know what a Makuhita was and Slakoth didn’t impress me. While Hariyama has never really done much for me, Makuhita is an adorable little boxer with a permanent grin and I love it. While Hariyama’s design might not impress, it’s my first Fighting Type I ever had as a party member and he will beat your ass like a drum.
Fourth is Positra. Plusle and Minun are Gen 3’s Pikachu variant and of course at the time I didn’t realize it would never evolve, but look at this thing – it’s adorable and its cheeks are shaped like plus symbols. Positra might not be the strongest, but damn if it ain’t cute and it can still zap you if given the chance. Electrike and Manectric always looked weird to me, but Plusle is fast and it can hit hard if given the chance.
Then we have Geist. Sableye, until Fairy type came along, used to be a Pokémon without any weaknesses. I don’t even remember catching this guy back in the day or having him on my team, yet here he is. I likely just enjoyed him because of the weird ghost design and wanted a Ghost type for my team, but of course he has so much more to offer, especially nowadays since his only weakness is Fairy. His stats are not the best, but like Sceptimus his Mega Evolution can compensate for that.
And finally, Oceanus. I wasn’t fond of ANY of the water types for Gen 3 back in the day. These days I like a lot more, but for a place with so much water, I’m fairly certain I used some other Pokémon for surfing for the longest time simply because I didn’t have anything else I liked, but I was quite fond of this Legendary. Not my favorite, obviously, but it’s a big-ass whale and it can flood the entire damn planet, so you don’t mess with it.
So yeah, used the Blisseys Secret Bases to power-level them up and I’ve now beaten the Alpha Sapphire Elite Four. Hello, old friends – it’s been too long.

Pokemon fishing rant
What is up with the fishing in pokemon? I mean, I can understand the flavor aspect of it, that you get water pokemon by fishing, but it’s always been so poorly implemented. There are two main mistakes. Over reliance on magikarp means that one water-type is much easier to catch than the others. Magikarp is also not weak. It evolves into the mighty gyarados at only level 20. This is before the third gym in most games. The inexplicable splitting of the fishing rod into three means that it is almost impossible for all three of them to feel unique, especially since you can catch water pokemon by surfing too. We end up with the old rod being useless, or the good or super rods barely being an upgrade. It feels like an excuse not to think about designing water catch rates properly
It’s worst in gen 1. You can get a level 5 magikarp for 500 yen just before mt. moon. Then, when you get the old rod in Vermillion, you can catch… more level 5 magikarp. And that’s it. It offers no improvement. The good rod expands your water pokemon catches to goldeen and poliwhirl, then the super rod to all water types. (Tentacool was the only pokemon available by surf.) Except you get them both at about the same time. In fact, it is quite likely you’ll get the super rod first. This makes any difference between them immaterial. Moreover, you get both of them well after the fourth gym. Until then, magikarp is your only option for a water type if you didn’t start with squirtle The remakes sort of fix this problem by giving the good and super rod different catch rates, making the good rod also give you krabby and horsea once you get to the sea, except it’s all pointless because the super rod can still be obtained before the good rod and the first half of the game still has nothing but magikarp.
Gen 2 isn’t great, but improves a lot on the formula. It doesn’t abandon it as it should have, but none of the three rods feel meaningless. The old rod gives you an 85% chance of magikarp which is still high, but there’s a 15% chance of either tentacool, poliwag, goldeen, or krabby. That’s more than gen 1 or 4. Then there is the good rod. That 15% chance is now 55%. There is also a 10% chance of a staryu, horsea, shellder, or dratini. Other pokemon are sprinkled in occasionally. The super rod is disappointing, though. It expands the 10% chance to 30, but only introduces two new pokemon, and neither is very good. There is also the issue of the good rod coming at about the same time as surf. The remakes then totally shit the bed on all of it. I can understand the reason, to make the super rod better. But they sabotaged the old and good rods. The old rod now has a 95% chance of magikarp, and the good rod has 60%. The good rod also now has only a 3% chance of making the best catches. The super rod is unchanged, but the least important of the three, because nobody is altering their team in the endgame. It’s also a special “fuck you” to nuzlockers, who are never going to catch anything in the rare slots now.
Gen 3 does have the best old rod. This wins it points. Magikarp is only 70% likely to appear. The other 30% was tentacool in saltwater, or goldeen in freshwater. Combined with the fact that having dive meant there were even fewer fishing opportunities, it did reasonably well. Unfortunately, there are problems after the old rod. The good rod was very late in the game, just after the fifth gym. It does offer 4 new pokemon at 20%. The problem is that freshwater gets three of them. All ocean routes just get wailmer, and there’s 17 ocean routes. Wailord is also not as good in battle as gyarados or tentacruel, making it feel like a downgrade. The super rod is again underwhelming. It only provides two new pokemon, and that’s only on 4 of the 18 routes. In freshwater it just increases the three 20% chances to 100%. In the ocean, there is 60% wailmer and 40% sharpedo. You can get carvanha, sharpedo’s preevolution, with the good rod though. Once again, the remakes alter the data. The good rod’s 20% chance of new catches is reduced to 5. This means you’ve beaten the fifth gym, and you get a rod that barely changed from the one you had at less than half this level. They also took the sharpedo out of the ocean routes, so it’s just wailmer. On the bright side, horsea is now on two more routes, and the chances of catching it go from 15 to 40%.
Gen 4 had better placement of its rods. The old rod is before the first gym, and the good rod is before the third. The super rod is just after the pokemon league, clearing the room for really only having two rods ingame. Unfortunately, it completely fails to act on any of these advantages. We go back to the old rod catching only magikarp, and the good rod catches 65% magikarp. You might as well not have had the old rod at all, since the good rod will still catch mostly magikarp at all locations. The super rod is no better. The promise of having dozens of water types to choose from is largely wasted. It mostly just catches evolved versions instead of any interesting national dex pokemon. Sinnoh region fishing is a bitter disappointment. There were no excuses of inexperience or structural problems. The only reason for the choice was the erroneous belief that magikarp is basic.
In gen 5, the super rod is now the only rod, and it is only available after the game is complete. Unfortunately, it really could have used it. The benefit of the fishing rods before ride pokemon were introduced is that you can have them before surf, because surf is a 95 power move and you can’t hand it out at the beginning of the game. The problem is this game has surf well after the 6th gym! (5th gym in b2w2) That’s the latest it’s ever been. There’s only two wild water pokemon available before then in bw. Oshawott is only one of the three starters. You get panpour if you choose snivy, but won’t use it if you have self respect. Tirtouga is just not as cool as archen, so you probably won’t pick it as you fossil. Even with surf, only 3 more evolutionary lines are available, and only one of those is good. The absence of fishing created a larger problem.
Gen 6 is seriously hurt by its insistence on splitting the pokedex in three. I know I spent this whole rant complaining about magikarp being everywhere, but this wasn’t an improvement. Central kalos has magikarp for all old rod catches, coastal has luvdisc, and mountain has poliwag. It isn’t one hundred percent magikarp, but it still has issues. The problem here is that the old rod comes just into coastal. That means that if you do want magikarp (which is again very good), you have to backtrack. This means you are basically stuck with luvdisc until almost the fourth gym. Nobody wants luvdisc. It has no evolution and is as weak as a first stage pokemon. You might as well not have a fishing rod. At least the magikarp line was useful. The good rod once again seems like the only rod with a purpose. You get the super rod about as you cross into mountain. Mountain has no super rod exclusive pokemon. They’re all in coastal, requiring even more backtracking. You have fly by now, but it still feels bizarre and pointless. The game isn’t structuring the wild pokemon and the new rods around each other at all.
Gen 7 finally introduced the fishing rod. Not the old rod, the good rod, the super rod, or the rod Ryder carbine action 200 shot range model fishing rod with a compass in the stock and this thing which tells time, just a fishing rod. Singular. The only problem is that it brings us right back to being plagued by magikarp! There’s 300 pokemon in the alola pokedex, twice the size of rby, dp, or bw. Why was it all spent on giving each patch of grass different capture data and not on making fishing not an annoying peripheral? 2 areas have 99% magikarp outside the bubbling spots. Why even have bubbling spots? They still have 50% magikarp in most places. Just have that be the normal capture data. The bottleneck problem returns, even if there’s only one rod. The fishing rod comes at about the same time as lapras paddle, the replacement for surf, and also the water-type filled land area brooklet hill. This means there is again a sudden glut of water types. It makes them feel less distinct. Ultra sun and ultra moon do improve on the overuse of magikarp. It’s unsurprisingly still everywhere, but it’s less common.
This may seem like getting worked up over something that doesn’t matter. It probably is, but a multibillion dollar game series has no excuse for mismanaging a basic feature this heavily. If I’m going to buy 7 games 28 times, I shouldn’t need a poorly designed feature to 100% them. I love pokemon, but its ceators is so complacent. They doesn’t bother to fix things until the entire fanbase complains about them twice. They know people will buy the games anyway. It just feels very cynical, and pokemon should not feel cynical.

Hints
The Very Rare Sure Catch
I’m not sure if this is how to activate it, but all the times it worked for me, I pressed a+b+l+r until the ball opened, as soon as it opened, I’d press it one more time and when it glowed like it does when it closed id press it again. Then, I would here a noise and it would wiggle in mid air, hit the ground, wiggle once, and lock close. As said before, I’m not sure that’s how to activate it, but it is helpfull and random. This is unconfirmed.
How To Get Celebi
Go to GAMESTOP. Ask the clerk. Some are available, but only while supplies last.
Get Pokemon from Johto, Kanto, Hoenn and Shinnoh
There is a way to get Pokemon like Ditto. First, you need to beat the Champion, Then you need to go to the Marvelous Bridge. While on the way, you will find in the bushes, Pokemon from the 4 regions.
Pokemon From Other Regions
After you beat the elite four and obtain the national pokedex, the two bridges to the right of the center of Unova open and every trainer you run across should at least have one or two pokemon from the other regions. Most of them should be pokemon from the Kanto region.
How To Trade Pokemon When They Know HM’s
Put pokemon that knows HM in the PC. Then while in trade mode access the pokemon that knows the HM and trade it.
Beating The Elite Four
If you want to beat the elite four, I would suggest you start off to the right of the four rooms. Because on pokemon black and white, you can start the elite four from any member of it. After you beat the elite four, its champion time. But Lord N is now champion cuz he beats the previous champ, Alder, and challenges you to a battle, but before you start, your black stone will start glowing, and TA-DA! Zekrom appears. Use your hopefully saved Master Ball to catch him. If you don’t have any space in your party, don’t worry cuz after you catch him, a message pops up that asks you if you want to access your pc box. After this is when Lord N challenges you. The battle starts off when he uses his Reshiram; which makes you send out Zekrom. After that is the real battle. Once you beat N, its not over yet; Ghetsis pops up and faces you while you are still weak. After you win, its done, and N turns good.
Easy Fast Exp.
First find a large patch of grass near a road. Then jump onto your bicycle and ride around on the road until a patch of grass starts to shake. Then proceed to run into the shaking grass there will usually be an Audino. Audino’s tend to have simple beam, heal pulse, double edge, and after you so you only have to worry about double edge. When you defeat the audino you should gain large amounts of exp. Especially if its high leveled like the ones on route 16. If paired with a traded pokemon or even a lucky egg the exp. Gains could be enormous. Its not uncommon to gain a level per battle till level 50.
Cobalion And Virizion
Cobalion is found in the Mistralton Cave first you need Surf to cross over there then Strength to push the boulders and Virizion is found in pinwheel forest after that old man leaves there are 4 rocks push them with strength.
Catch Pokemon Manually
There is a very easy way to catch pokemon in 5th gen. What you do is press “A” just before the pokeball is meant to shake. That will, in theory, cause the ball to shake. Trust me, I’ve done this myself and it works. I caught Zekrom using only three pokeballs.
Cynthia?
Yes, Cynthia, from Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, is in Pokemon Black and White. She lives in the town to the far right of the map. All her pokemon are on Lv. 75, and are very hard to kill. I havent beaten her yet but I will keep trying. Good luck to all of you who have beaten the elite four.
Getting The National Pokedex
To obtain the National pokedex, you need to beat the elite four. After you do the game will go through those long credits and start from the title screen. You will start off at home as usual. Then you will go outside somewhere and Professor Juniper will upgrade your pokedex.
Some Good Pokemon
Some good pokemon with the right moves most people should have on their team are a zoroark with the moves aerial ace, foul play, swagger (if it can learn it) and dig. IIf your wondering why I said swagger, you can raise the foes attack which boosts foul plays power (foul plays power is more powerful the higher attack the foe has) and the foe gets confused and it should hold a lum berry. Another good pokemon to have is a druddigon holding a rocky helmet (ability and item damage foe when they use a physical attack on druddigon) and it’s moves should be dragon claw, double team, flamethrower and dragon tail. And for the zoroark, put a fighting type in the back of your party so the foe might use a phycic attack and since its a dark type, it wont be affected and the foe will probably think you are a hacker.
Easy First Gym Win
The first gym only has the Pokemon that is strong against your starter type. But if you go to the dreamyard that you ” can’t get in to” a girl will ad about you starter type and will give you a Pokemon that is strong against the gym leaders Pokemon.
Differences Between Black And White Versions
The diffrence between Pokemon black and white is that in black you can only do triple battle and in White you can only do rotational battles. Now the diffrence between these two are you’ll see more triple battle in pkmn balck and less rotational battles but on the other hand you have pkmm white wich you’ll do more rotational battles and less triple battles. Now here are the diffrences between triple battle and rotational battle. Triple battle: triple battle is like any other battle but instead of using one pkmn in single battle or using two pkmn at the same time in double battle you can use three pkmn at the same time in triple battle. Rotational battle: rotational battle is kinda confusing it confuses me and what it is that its like triple battle but you send out three pkmn out at the same time but the one on the right can attack the one on the right or the middle pkmn and so on but the best thing bout rotational battle is when you have one of your pokemon in the middle you can change its place you can put your okmn that was in the middle and now move it to your left or right and the okm in the left or right goes oin the middle. Now remember that pkmn black has more triple battle and less rotational battle and opkmn white has more rotational battle then triple battle.
Same Cheats As Black Version
Although there are some differences between white and black versions, much of the same hints and tips will work for both versions.
Kyruem And Diss
In case you all don’t know there’s a legendary hiding in the Giant Chasm. He’s big, mean, and tough as nails. His name is Kyruem and he’s level 75. He’s also an ice type, so be prepped. Oh, and 1 more thing. Whoever that guy was that said it took him 3 ultra’s to catch Zekrom, YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO CATCH HIM, FOOL! YOU DON’T NEED TO WASTE YOU’RE RESOURCES LIKE THAT!
Valcrona And First Evolved Form (and Darmanitan With Zen)
If you’ve beaten the game and return to the relic castle professor juniper should stop you before you go in. She’ll talk about the statues and tell you there actually Pokemon! She’ll give you a rage candy bar. Take it and walk up to a statue I suggest saving before you start because if you trained your Pokemon like I did than it will be hard to beat it with out it fainting. Any way you don’t have to worry about it hitting you until you’ve cut its health in half. Because if I’m right its defense rises by half and it goes into zen mode were it looks like the statue. Once you’ve caught it (or beaten it in which you’ll have to restart)go into the relic castle. Go down to the bottom of it (same way the first time you did it) and walk not to the middle but to the very right. There is a team plasma grunt inside you’ll have to battle him to continue which isn’t that hard. When you beat him you’ll have to walk along a maze and you’ll find another sage when looker takes him away walk inside the door due north. There should be a Pokemon standing at the end. This is valcrona. After you’ve caught him you’ll notice that’s not his first form so if your trying to complete the game your going to have to walk (or fly if you have common sense)back home. Go talk to mom and shell rest your Pokemon. Also go to the lab depending on how many Pokemon you’ve caught professor juniper will give you a TM. Now head to route 18. If you don’t know where that is look it up when you get there there should be a house immediately there inside they will heal your Pokemon and give you an egg plus further along the route there should be a sage.
Simi
In dream yard, considering your starting pokemon you will receive either Pansear, Panpour, or Panseige, you then go to the big city with the docks you go to the first dock near the entrance and there will be a veteran and he’ll give you a water stone, a fire stone, or a grass stone to evolve the pokemon you received from the girl in the dream yard.
Strong Musharna
First things first, catch a munna (best to have exp. share) in dream yard then level that munna to at least level 20. Then, at some point in the game, you will receive a moon stone. Use the moon stone and POOF! You have a strong musharna.
HMs
1. Cut:Found in the Dreamyard 2. Fly:Bianca gives it to you in Nimbasa City after battling the gym leader 3. Surf:Found in Driftveil City or Route 6 4. Strength:Haven’t found it 5. Waterfall:Found in Route 18 one of the seven sages gives it to you 6. Dive:Found in Undella City a girl gives it to you outside right next to the Pokemon Center.
Easy Leveling Up
To do this get the exp. Share then get the lucky egg beat the champion and if you got a good low level pokemon and get a very high level pokemon give it the lucky egg and BOOM! Your low level pokemon will get more exp. Points then usual and of you trade them to black you could get triple exp. points. I did it and got my zekrom to level 75! Doing this and its still going up!
Musharna
When you beat the pokemon league go to the dreamyard and somewhere you will find a musharna on level 50.
How To Find Rotom
I found Rotom on Route # 14 in a cabin. When I went inside, I saw a Professor who asked ” By any chance have you caught a Ditto? ” ” If you did, would you trade it for my Rotom? ” My little Brother got a ditto and traded it for a Rotom and it knew the moves, ” substitute, charge, electroball, and hex. ” Their Attack stat. is very low ( Bad ). He is level 60.
Hardest Pokemon To Beat On Ghetisis’s Team.
The hardest one would be hygrigon because he has moves that would faint your zekrom or reshiram. If you have a serperior prepare to faint because of falme blast or whatever it is called. And if you want his pokemon you need to get a deino on victory road then evolve it at lv. 50 I don’t know what the name of the 2nd evolution is. Then evolve him at lv. 62 or 64. Then it would probably be a breeze to beat him.
Cheats

Glitch: Easy Day Care EXP
When you’re in the Day Car, you get EXP for each step you take. So you can get good EXP from it (but you will need a lot of cash). Do the following steps: 1. Drop off Pokemon at the Route 3 Day Care (you can drop off 2 pokemon). 2. Go to the Battle Subway in Nimbasa City. 3. Stand the character in the middle of the path, then place something heavy on your down and a buttons. If you can get it set up right, you can leave your DS alone for a while.4. Come back and go back to the Day care and get your Pokemon. BOOM!

Pokémon FireRed Nuzlocke [Part 1]
-claps hands together- Okay, this one’s going to be a little different. My primary goal when I first started the Nuzlocke thing was to replay games with some more variety in the choices. The Nuzlocke element was more about limiting the chaos of the Randomizer than really doing a proper Nuzlocke.
This, though, is going back to the basics. It should be very fun.
Rules:
After possessing poke balls, only the first pokemon of any route is eligible for catch.
Barring duplicates. Waiting until an unregistered pokemon appears is valid.
Any pokemon that faints will be considered dead, and go into a specified box.
Each pokemon must be nicknamed.
Starter pokemon is determined by Trainer ID number.
Team wipe means the run’s over.
Plus one extra special one:
Only battling Trainers is allowed.
No grinding. The only smudge line is that if I can’t run away from a pokemon, I am allowed to defeat it. I’m not going to be locked into a situation where a wild pokemon ends everything because it’s too fast and I’m not allowed to attack it.
My expectation is that I’m going to fail at least a few times. So the part tag on these posts isn’t going to necessarily match where I’m at in the game. I’m just going to keep on until the Elite Four is beaten.
Hopefully this is as exciting as I’m wanting it to be!
Tumblr media
Heyo prof.
Geez, the moments before you have the option to adjust the text speed are the worst.
Tumblr media
In the spirit of having fun, I’m not going to go with my standard. For this game, I shall be... Coin. Only in caps, because I think gen three is still a gen where all of the names of stuff come in caps. Gotta make sure I fit in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love video games.
Rival names are always so difficult. You can be Turq. Also in screamy caps.
Tumblr media
First thing’s first, after changing the text speed. Into my computer for a Potion. Which I never knew about until I started watching people play these games on the internet.
Second thing is...
Tumblr media
ID number.
Bulbapedia says 4-6 is Fire. Yoooo.
Tumblr media
Who knows if we’ll even have a chance to watch that play out. We have to make it through the rival fight first, and that’s pretty much RNG.
Charmander, your name shall be Heero.
Tumblr media
First fight of the game.
Scratch, Tackle, Scratch, Tackle, Scratch, Tackle...
Tumblr media
Yay, we get to continue forward!
Heero is level 6 now.
Tumblr media
One day, this stat chart might be of interest to me.
Heero is a Calm female Charmander. She knows Scratch and Growl.
Up to Viridian, grabbing Oak’s Parcel, down to Pallet, delivering Oak’s Parcel... Pokedex get, and we have five poke balls! Plus vague instructions to visit our rival’s sister for a Town Map.
Route 1 reentered, and our first available catch appears.
Tumblr media
What I’m dying to know is if I get exp for catching in this gen. I can’t remember.
Tumblr media
Yay!
Nope on the exp, though.
Rattata’s name is going to be Cat.
Cat is going in the box. The experiment of this first run is going to be how far Heero can push. I have a limited amount of exp to harvest, and I want to have it go to something I’m planning on using for a while. Who knows how this will turn out.
Route 22 is going to be briefly examined for our next partner. We’ll be back later to fight Turq, but right now he would eat us alive.
First thing is Rattata. Nope.
Tumblr media
FUCK YES.
Maybe. This is still complicated.
Caught!
Going with a theme here... Allenby.
Old dude int town teaches us how to catch stuff, he gives us the Teachy TV which I don’t think I’ve ever touched except by accident, yay, we move forward.
Into Route 2. I walk through the grass without getting anything, and you know what, for now that’s fine. Into Viridian Forest we go, and that means it’s finally time for trainers.
Allenby is going to be in front for as much as I can keep her. As much as I like the possibility of just training Heero into the invincible Charmander that laughs in the face of Brock... lol.
Bug Catcher Rick is our first fight outside Turq! He has a level 6 Weedle. ...This is already uncomfortable. Yep, Poison Sting poisons Allenby. But Allenby wins and grows to level 5.
Tumblr media
Rick also has a Caterpie.
...I have Potions. I should have bought Antidotes, but I forget how low the HP is early on, and also that walking probably does damage. But Allenby should be able to take on a Caterpie. Maybe.
With the help of a Potion.
And when we’re running around trying to find an Antidote, a Caterpie appears.
Her name can be Rain.
Now I have the delightful project of looking at the menu every few seconds to check if it’s time to give Allenby a Potion. I... think it’s fewer steps to one of the Antidotes hidden in the forest than the Pokemon Center or Mart.
The exciting challenges of early gens.
...Fuck it, I don’t know where the Antidote is. I’m going to try out rushing to the Center.
One more Potion.
Tumblr media
Made it.
Rain, into the box.
I’m buying ten Antidotes. Three more Poke Balls, and five Potions.
Back in Route 2, a Pidgey wants to join the box squad.
...
And I wasn’t going to use it anytime soon anyway, but I turned my brain off and didn’t nickname it. Sigh. Uh, for future reference, the Pidgey’s name is Ren. I don’t think I can change it until Lavender Town, but that’s its name.
Tumblr media
Fight number two.
Opening with a level 7 Weedle.
Allenby makes it to 6 beating it. Allenby learns Low Kick!
Another level 7 Weedle follows.
Allenby is finally poisoned. After a lot of good luck. Needs a Potion before I can use an Antidote, because the Weedle’s probably going to use Poison Sting again, and if I use an Antidote, Allenby’s health is low enough that a Poison Sting + poison would be an issue.
Nope, it uses String Shot.
Allenby makes it to level 7.
And Doug’s last thing is Kakuna. Well, this will take forever, but that’s fine. Doug down.
Tumblr media
I realized I didn’t do this for her. So here. Have a timely picture. And I finally found the Antidote. It was just in the middle of the path.
Missed the name. Don’t ask why. But Allenby faces a level 7 Caterpie. Allenby wins and is now level 8 (also the dude’s name is Anthony). Level 8 Caterpie comes out to pick up the slack.
Bug Catcher Charlie is next, and yay, Metapod. Allenby is level 9. A Caterpie and Metapod later, Charlie’s out.
Next up, Bug Catcher Sammy. He’s got a level 9 Weedle. Ick. But it’s gone now, even though Allenby is poisoned. Congrats on level 10, btw. Antidote time.
That’s all we have available before Brock, and that means we’re going back to Route 22 to fight Turq. If memory serves, he has two. His starter, and... I want to say Pidgey? With the Pidgey out front?
So Allenby gets to play second fiddle to Heero for a little bit. Hopefully Heero will survive long enough to get some exp before post-Brock, since she won’t have any participation points for that fight.
Tumblr media
Happy fun times with rival.
Hey, I got it right!
He has his. level 9 Pidgey. Oh geez.
Yeah, Heero can’t handle this. Allenby? Save her?
Allenby succeeds. Heero grows to level 7. And learns Ember!
Squirtle comes out, and it’s level 9 too.
Allenby wins. Nice.
Brock time, I guess.
Tumblr media
Iconic.
Camper Liam sends out a level 10 Geodude for Allenby to hopefully eat. Allenby does, and reaches level 11. Even better, Allenby learns Karate Chop! Liam sends out a level 11 Sandshrew. Allenby beats it and all that’s left to the gym is Brock.
Tumblr media
Don’t worry, kid, we still love you.
Back to the Center to heal, then. Brock.
Tumblr media
Hi. I’m Coin. I’m on a path of destruction.
Level 12 Geodude is my first opponent.
Aaaaand it’s gone. Allenby gets to live to level 12.
Level 14 Onix.
Allenby wins!
First badge get. Heero gets to go back into the first slot for switch training. Then Running Shoes for me! Yay!
Right we go, and Bug Catcher Colton is our first post-Brock opponent. He has a level 10 Caterpie. Heero handles it, and reaches level 8. Level 10 Weedle up next. Heero wins again, and level 9 she hits. Another level 10 Caterpie. That’s enough to get Heero up to 10! It costs and Antidote, but whatever.
Lass Janice is up next. She has a level 9 Pidgey. Then surprise, she has another. Heero hits 11.
Tumblr media
This isn’t especially important I just wanted to break up the wall of text.
She has a level 10 Rattata.
She also has a level 10 female Nidoran. It poisons Allenby, who has to go in after Heero is nearly felled by two Tail Whips worth of Quick Attack. Allenby is level 13, and I’m about to be down another Antidote.
Trip to the Pokemon Center, and then it’s Bug Catcher Greg. He’s got a level 9 Weedle. Thankfully Heero can nail those in one shot, and is now level 12. Level 9 Kakuna. Level 9 Caterpie. Wait, let me guess, level 9 Metapod? Yep.
Tumblr media
Yay Heero. Heero now knows Metal Claw. Double yay.
Next up is Bug Catcher James. He’s got a level 11 Caterpie. He’s also got a level 11 Metapod. Heero thanks them for the exp.
Lass Robin follows with her Jigglypuff. It is level 14, so I think I will let Allenby help out after Heero gets a nom in. I also think it’s time for Allenby to be up front again, if only for a little while. I’m still getting a feel for how to distribute the exp. In this case, I let Heero handle all the Bug Catchers, and intended for Allenby to get all the other trainers. Lass Robin moves, so I wasn’t sure if she was a trainer NPC or standard NPC.
Youngster Calvin! What’s on your agenda?
A level 14 Spearow.
I’m going to let Allenby stay in for a hit. Tune in to see how much I am filled with regret.
Peck is unpleasant, but Karate Chop can finish it in two, so that’s how we’re gonna do.
Tumblr media
Same, my man.
Youngster Ben. With the level 11 Rattata. And the level 11 Ekans. With Intimidate. Ugh. And Wrap. More ugh. But Allenby makes it to level 14 through Ben’s contributions.
So there’s grass on this here route. Time to see if we’re getting another one for the box, or maybe adding someone to the team.
Tumblr media
Box buddy. Hm. You can be... Herine.
The dude selling the Magikarp in front of Mt. Moon is technically in Route 4, so that Magikarp could conceivably count, but Magikarp needs loads of experience to level up to something usable. Efficiency demands we not add it.
Tumblr media
The art they’ve added into these is really pretty. I like it a lot.
Mt. Moon gives us a level 7 female Zubat. Another for the box. Her name’s Dini.
Now for the long, long, long trek through a cave where I can’t attack any of the constantly spawning creatures. Yaay.
Bug Catcher Kent wants to spice it up with a battle. He has a level 11 Weedle. Allenby takes that, Heero nabs the level 11 Kakuna.
Lass Iris is also here. She has a Clefairy, and since Fairy Type doesn’t exist yet, tear it up Allenby.
Tumblr media
I have no memory of what Type theme you have in this gen. I want to say Magnemite...? Yeah, level 11 Magnemite. Followed by a level 11 Voltorb.
Allenby grows to level 15!
There looks to be a Bug Catcher for Heero around the corner. Bug Catcher Robby. He’s got a level 10 Caterpie.
On a related note, Heero is level 15 now!
Hm. I think I want to check something really fast. Because I don’t have a ban on guides in this Nuzlocke. Eh, okay, that’s not going to work. I wondered if maybe exp needed to reach the next level changed when a pokemon evolved. It looks like no after a brief thing. Species line determines it, not present form. Moves are affected, but that’s a different...
I should look that up.
Okay, for my current team, I think I don’t want to delay evolution for anything. Risk is high, benefit is nil.
Anyway, Robby has a level 10 Metapod. Followed by a level 10 Caterpie.
I pick up a Rare Candy.
I haven’t decided how I feel about Rare Candy on this run.
Tumblr media
She has a level 11 Oddish, making me happy I got lazy with switching Heero out of first position. Allenby can tackle her level 11 Bellsprout. No I’m not assigning EV preference that would be a level of insanity beyond anything I could manage shut up.
...I took a break to talk to a friend and I think I’m lost.
Youngster Josh wants to battle! Youngster Josh bringing it with the level 11 Rattata! Youngster Josh bringing it with the level 10 Rattata! Youngster Josh bringing it with the level 10 Zubat!
Heero can eat that one.
Heero hits level 16, and I think I know what that means!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She’s a good girl.
Hiker Marcos wants to fight now. He has a level 10 Geodude. And another one. And a level 10 Onix.
Allenby is level 16 now. Yay.
Um. Okay. I’m going to try to unlost myself. I think the ladder furthest from the entrance is the one that goes forward, but even more than usual, I want to be sure I explore everywhere.
Tumblr media
This is how the most popular game franchise in the world starts.
No, Sandshrew should never be made to do evil. A curse upon you, grunt. It’s level 11. A baby.
The Rattata’s on-brand, though.
Congrats on level 17, Allenby. Heero can take the level 11 Zubat. She even does.
Another ladder, another Grunt. Another level 11 Zubat. A new addition of a level 11 Ekans. It is not match for our fierce team.
A different grunt has a level 13 Rattata. Allenby is not impressed. Also a level 13 Sandshrew. I am not impressed. This other Grunt also has a level 13 Rattata. Allenby is level 18. Heero gets the level 13 Zubat.
Tumblr media
You don’t need to tell me that.
Super Nerd Miguel has a Grimer. It knows Poison Gas.
I forgot how much I hate poison. Level 12 Koffing is next. I need to spend two turns on Antidote and Potion. Heero gets the level 12 Voltorb since Allenby has kind of taken a beating from the poison. Because poison is awful.
Welcome to level 17, Heero.
I take the Dome Fossil, since the plot makes you take stuff from the poor guy.
I use an Escape Rope to get back to the Pokemon Center. I think this is the last stretch of Mt. Moon and there are some trainers outside. I’d rather everyone be healed to the brim before we go through them.
Tumblr media
We made it! To the outside world!
Stopping point!

Pokémon White Randomized Nuzlocke Run [Part 2]
Here we are in Part 2, where I have maybe learned a thing about how to keep these from being dreadfully boring. Part 1 saw us defeat the first Gym, as well as my dawning sadness about the HM state of my available pokemon.
Now we move into the Badge 2 phase of the game.
Breathing Pokemon:
Boeing (Latios)
Frogger (Seismitoad)
Timon (Tepig)
I think I will be ignoring the Cut problem until I absolutely can’t, which will be in about five minutes.
Tumblr media
I don’t know why I didn’t walk left earlier, but I didn’t. Is there grass here? Can I catch something? My team is basically just Timon and Frogger. I love Boeing, but he is not made for this rough life. He likes relaxing and eating. Not fighting.
And the answer is that the Professor’s scientist friend has supplied a plot barrier. Sigh.
Welp.
Tumblr media
....
I can’t even pretend to be surprised. Dang it, Boeing.
I don’t want to use anything outside the confines of the challenge if I can help it. The idea is not, “win all the fights” under these conditions, it’s beating the game.
Congratulations, Boeing.
You’re temporarily useful.
Tumblr media
Grass! Beautiful grass!
Also Team Plasma.
Tumblr media
Cut is so much more useful than Psywave and I am very sad.
Team Plasma dealt with, obligatory plot detail I wasn’t paying attention to dealt with, we are now free to pursue the grass.
Tumblr media
Or will the grass pursue us.
I can’t remember how Tangela evolves normally, or how it evolves given the settings of the run, but I do think that Tangela probably could have learned Cut just fine, and I can’t remember if the Move Deleter costs anything, or even where it is in this version.
But that’s only a concern if I catch a thing that can learn Cut. Let’s do this, Boeing.
Tumblr media
Sleep Powder is hypothetically useful. I don’t think it has ever hit when I try to use it.
Two Poke Balls and nothing. I think I am going to sacrifice the Great Ball some random NPC gave me.
Tumblr media
Victory!
Good job, Boeing. See, isn’t life more fun when you’re useful?
Tumblr media
You know, I don’t normally nickname my pokemon. They just keep the same name every edition of them in the wild has, and that’s perfectly fine with me.
Your name shall be... Grape.
Because look at all those vines writhing... writhe... wrath? Grapes!
Such thought. Much wow.
I think it’s time for healing and grinding.
Oh, but first, Grape! Let us find something out about you.
Tumblr media
He is Brave and quick to flee. His Speed suggests that he isn’t that great at fleeing.
Other pokemon we could have gotten from the HM grass spot of doom include Sudowoodo and Beedrill. Tangela looks to be rarest of the set, so I suppose we can add lucky to Grape’s list of traits. There’s a Potion and a Parlyz Heal lying about that I go grab, and until the plot brings us back later (probably sometime after we get Strength), this area is just going to be a grind station.
Until I get bored after about three minutes and want to go back to exploring. I’m not sure I’m made for a Nuzlocke.
...Why is Constrict a move? It’s about as useful as Splash, only with the false hope of being capable of dealing damage.
Yeah, I don’t have the patience for this. I’m going to go left again and see what there is now that the plot isn’t keeping me trapped. ...Only after I talk to Fennel again. Apparently just letting her collect the whatever thing is not enough, I have to listen to her discoveries.
I do not. Button mashing away, we now have our C-Gear and Pal Pad. I think the first of those will end up having uses. I mostly remember all these different event skins being available for the gear.
Now I should be able to go.
Tumblr media
Ha. I have conquered the plot barrier.
Tumblr media
Since this is a separate section from the garden area, I think once I have some kind of rod or Surf I can come back and nab something from the water. ...I wonder if grass vs water even matters in a randomized run. Are they all completely random, or random within water? I should know these things.
My guess would be completely random. I cite the level 4 Salamence on Route 2. But either way, something to come back to.
Tumblr media
Aw, how cute. I’m gonna demolish you (I hope).
It looks like battling is going to happen before finding out what pokemon belong to this route. In the interest of learning how to do this better bit by bit, I think I’ll limit capping battles unless something truly ridiculous happens. This early in the game there shouldn’t be much tension.
I will probably keep track of how many times Psywave misses if I use it, though. That obviously falls into the realm of Importance.
I will also say that Lillipups continue to be terrifying. And that I am so temporarily glad that Boeing knows Cut. Consistent damage. That hits.
I can’t believe this game encourages taking preschoolers’ pocket money. I know I’m only ten, but wow.
Ah, but the nice thing about beating up preschoolers (’ pokemon) is that they have a teacher around very used to healing pokemon up. Walking back to centers to heal is one of the not so fun aspects of
Whoops.
So it’s a good thing I only did grinding, because I clicked the load file option instead of the save file when I was trying to save. Good grief. I am become error. Will return momentarily. With one fresh water short, because I was stupid and a Beedrill almost murdered Timon. Also Timon now knows Flame Charge.
Okay.
Tumblr media
Back to making forward progress, hopefully.
Tumblr media
Let me go in the grass, Cheren. You’re supposed to be one of my two best friends. The fact that I had to be reminded by a professor whose name I also couldn’t be counted on to remember myself does not take away from our friendly bonds.
There really are a lot of non-NPC duels at the start of this version.
Okay, let’s go squad.
Boeing and Timon do a good job taking down his Meganium. I think I’ll let Frogger take the Purrloin. As the one on the team who did not need grinding, he hasn’t been used in a bit.
And that’s that. Cheren is sad/frustrated because we have the same number of badges, his starter is fully evolved and useful, and yet he still can’t win. Of course he can’t; the run would be over if he did.
But before we can celebrate and get into the grass, the plot arrives.
Tumblr media
Team Plasma please. At least I have the option of going into the grass before getting the little girl’s pokemon back. Which I will take.
Let’s see what we get!
Tumblr media
...Another thing that doesn’t need my help to evolve. Sigh.
As ever, that only gets a chance to annoy me if I catch it, so time to see how that train goes. I’m going to try throwing my only Great Ball. Psywave got it into the red, so...
Tumblr media
!
Awesome! Based on videos I have seen recently most people aren’t that lucky when it comes to catching these things. Now I can sulk about having a fully evolved team (except for the treasured Timon) in peace.
Tumblr media
What the heck do I name you, though? You’re a dinobird... Oh, I know. I’ll call you Ptera. Welcome to the team, Ptera. Let’s check you out.
Tumblr media
He has a Mild nature, and he’s proud of his power. I feel like that Defense is going to end up making me cry, and I don’t think you’re a Special Attacker, so the Nature is pretty much all flavor. It’s nice to have something that can Fly; hopefully he’ll be around to use it.
...Oh geez, that Ability. Ptera Ptera Ptera... You are going to make me so sad.
The good news is he can kill his wild kin in one hit. So that’s convenient.
Tumblr media
I’m sorry, what.
This is the exp grass now. Other finds include Octillery. Grape eats them for breakfast.
Tumblr media
...
Oh.
It knows Aurora Beam.
It got a critical hit.
Grape was only a few points off of full health.
There was no way to know.
This is really sad.
Tumblr media
I am so sorry Grape. You were a valued member of the team. You were only with us a short while, but you knew Grass moves. You balanced everything out wonderfully.
The exp grass is a dangerous place.
Maybe if I had just gone after the little girl’s pokemon...
It’s too late.
Grape is a raisin.
Tumblr media
In the process of going after Team Plasma, it looks like Chimecho might be replacing Audino in the rustling grass. Maybe once, maybe always. Who can say. That would take paying more attention when messing with the settings.
Tumblr media
A place to find Grape’s replacement. It would have been where we’d finally have a team of six, but...
Oh hey we found something already.
Tumblr media
Okay, I can roll with that.
Tumblr media
......Surprise, Ptera is stronger than expected. I knew enough to use Wing Attack, not Rock Throw, but I guess Ptera is just that good. Filed away for future reference. No new pokemon. A fitting tribute to Grape’s absence. The slot may remain empty for a little longer.
We get some Heal Balls from the little girl, and those could actually really come in handy. Assuming I ever properly catch a new teammate again.
One battle against an NPC later, and I think it’s safe to say Ptera is the new Frogger. He is overpowered for this section of the game.
You know what wouldn’t be overpowered? A Slugma.
I forgot about the darker grass. Route 3′s has Minccino, Teddiursa, Quilava, and Emolga.
Tumblr media
Boeing could you please just learn something good. Please.
Whenever I see an Octillery now I’m just going to be filled with so much hate. I will kill every one that comes across my path. Unless I screw up and it kills me again, which is an absolute possibility.
Tumblr media
We’ve made it to the next Gym city. Normal type. That shouldn’t cause any particular problem, but I do remember this fight packing more of a punch than I was expecting the first time I played, so cue the grinding montage I’m not going to screencap.
As well as the exploring the town montage I’m not going to screencap.
One of the NPCs asked me what I started with, so like a fool, I said Snivy, since that’s what Boeing replaced.
Now I have a Miracle Seed. And nothing that knows Grass moves.
Grape casts a long shadow already.
Tumblr media
New area means new pokemon. Ones I have no plans to murder, but might very well anyway.
Tumblr media
!!!!!
It’s. Grape’s replacement.
I love Shroomish and Breloom. One of the best pokemon in any gen, and I would dearly love one to follow me on this journey.
Tumblr media
Yesssssss.
Tumblr media
Let’s see. How about Palm, because your design reminds me of a pomegranate.
Tumblr media
Palm has a Calm nature, and is somewhat of a clown. I’m pretty sure that is not the combination I want, since Breloom is more of a physical attacker, but hopefully it won’t matter too much. Poison Heal is a useful Ability to have.
Other things we could have caught in Pinwheel Forest: Vileplume, Froslass, Klink, Clamperl, Bellossom, Glaceon, Ducklett, and Metagross.
Wow. That’s a nice collection.
Oh hey and this happened.
Tumblr media
Timon is now a robust Pignite, and has a move that will be of great use in the Gym!
We’re just going through the forest and annihilating everyone, but I spared a moment to commemorate Palm’s moment.
Tumblr media
Tympole confused him, and he still used Absorb twice in a row instead of hurting himself. Then he snapped out of confusion and won. Contrary Nature aside, I am liking our new addition very much.
Especially since the fight against the next Tympole followed the exact same script. Good job, Palm.
The rest of this is basically all grinding, which is fun for me since I don’t have to come up with something clever to say when nothing much is going on. That is one benefit of doing this in this format.
My usual rule of thumb for these games is ten levels per gym until that much grinding becomes unbearable. Everyone’s currently level 18 (Ptera’s 16 and trying to fix that almost resulted in a Glaceon murdering him), and I’m thinking I might have hit that point.
...Yeah, I definitely have. I’ll just hit the Gym and let Ptera nom some things. Boeing will probably have to sit this fight out, because as we all know, what Normal type really means is Lillipups that know Bite. Those are not things for Boeing to face.
It is amazing how many different patches of grass suddenly have pokemon when I’m trying to leave a place, good grief.
Tumblr media
Hello, am I fighting you again already? Or are you just doing your mysterious thing?
No, yeah, we’re doing a battle. And he opens with a level 13 Pidove to my level 17 Ptera. I don’t think he’s going to win this one. N, of course. Ptera has it in the bag, because I think it’s fair to say I have overleveled myself.
Palm was continuing his great streak of not letting Tympoles make him hurt himself, but sadly he did hurt himself once in this fight. Still, not bad, and much better than I usually get saddled with.
Ptera fighting the Timburr might be an incredibly stupid idea. He can one-shot them, but if they get a Rock Throw crit, it will be bad. This has been learned from the Fighting trainers in the wild that I didn’t screencap.
Those guys were at level 16, though. N’s level 13 is nowhere near the same brand of problem, and Ptera cleans up.
Alright, that settled, can I enter the gym now?
Tumblr media
I forgot about the museum in front. Lenora’s got good taste.
Tumblr media
Another Fresh Water for me. This one I don’t plan on using up. I don’t think I’ll need to, based on N’s levels. I really overtrained for this whole badge, probably. But that’s okay. I don’t like worrying about my pokemon dying every fight. Steamrolling is fine too. The main fun with all of this is finding out what I’ll end up with and raising them.
Then the very first trainer has a level 17 Patrat.
I feel less silly in my decisions.
Followed by a level 17 Herdier.
This is where I would consider doing more grinding, except by the time I’ve decided to stop grinding, I am generally not going to start again for a while.
The trainer with more than one pokemon starts with a level 15 Lillipup, so the Gym Leader’s are probably around 17-20. That should be okay. I’m healing before I go forward anyway, and Ptera’s going to grow another level beforehand just by beating this last trainer.
Tumblr media
I really like Lenora’s Gym. It’s educational and has a secret staircase. I don’t think you can ask for more (though if memory serves, some of these get pretty wild this version).
Heals, then fight. This should be fine.
Tumblr media
I want this office.
Tumblr media
Ready... FIGHT!
She’s opening with a level 18 Herdier with Intimidate. Sigh. I forgot that was an ability. That might make this a little more awkward than I want, but Ptera is still part Rock. If things are going to go wrong, they should go wrong slowly enough for me to switch.
Take Down with a Leer boost only does 12, so yeah, this should be okay.
She uses a Super Potion, it takes three of any of Ptera’s attacks to down it, but Ptera gets a crit, and it’s Watchdog time!
I remembered she had this one.
For the sake of safety, I’m going to let Timon and his super effective attack handle this one. I think the Watchdog likes to sleep things.
A level 20 Watchdog. Do not want. But I believe in you, Timon. Go for it.
Tumblr media
Uh.
Huh.
Fuck?
That’s. Wow, okay.
Watchdog with Retaliate. Awesome.
I don’t trust Ptera’s Defense to withstand whatever comes next, so Frogger... please do not die. Please. I need you to be alive and useful, because I just lost one of the greatest helps to this run.
Of course it has Hypnosis.
Tumblr media
It’s so red. So close.
Retaliate does 30 damage without the fainting teammate ahead of time, and now Frogger is asleep and in the red. He needs to get out of there now, but I think Pursuit could be one of Watchdog’s moves.
I have one Soda Pop. He’s asleep anyway, so I’m willing to try it.
Geez this is scary.
tfw Watchdog also has Crunch and now Frogger’s Defense is lowered.
He isn’t faster, I don’t think. Even if he wakes up...
Switched to Palm and now Palm’s asleep.
Switching back to Frogger.
Frogger takes two Crunches, needs a Fresh Water, the next Crunch is a critical hit, and Frogger is still asleep. I have two Super Potions, now one, and Frogger is still alive and still asleep.
What in the fuck.
I know the sleep counter gets reset if you pull it out, but come on.
He finally wakes up, and because Watchdog only needed one more hit, victory is achieved.
Tumblr media
Not worth it.
Tumblr media
Lenora I don’t like you anymore.
And before we can end this segment, Team Plasma attacks the museum. Yay, plot. Plot to distract from the pain. The horrible, sad, awful, pain.
Tumblr media
I can’t even remember their excuse for stealing the skull. Was there one?
Tumblr media
I don’t know and care even less.
So we are assigned to search for the thieves with Burgh, Castelia’s Gym Leader, while Cheren and Bianca stay at the museum. Bianca is playing Fennel’s gopher, so we now have Dowsing Machine (MCHN) we will never remember to use, but if you’ll excuse me, I have more important matters to attend to.
Tumblr media
...Bye.
I know the screenshots don’t show it, but you did a great job. Nothing else would have survived the gym if you hadn’t made training in Pinwheel Forest so straightforward. You did good, Timon.
Next Gym gets grinding. No complaints.
