cas: dean, millions of lives are at stake, not just two. stay focused. there’s a greater purpose.

dean: you know what? i’m getting a little sick and tired of the greater purposes, okay? i think what i’d like to do right now is save a couple of kids, if you don’t mind.

bobby: they won’t take long.

cas: you don’t know that. they may find more wayward orphans along the way. their empathetic response was crippling and dangerous. it was a bad idea letting them go.

bobby: you don’t let sam and dean winchester do squat. they do what they gotta do. you know that.

the line, “i cared about the whole world because of you,” was playing on a loop in my head throughout these scenes.

it seems like cas only understands friendship as an allyship still since he’s in the headspace that the needs of the many outweigh the few. that’s as far as he consciously “feels” love. anything else is unknown to him, so i love this new layer to his dynamic with dean because, though they both want free will and understand what it means to be friends / soldiers, dean is human. cas feels and cares, he’s shown it over and over, but with the war and still being an angel, he’s only just tapping into love in all its forms. he hasn’t differentiated it the way humans can.

now it’s not about familial love or destiny like cas is used to with these two. them helping the kids is, to cas, like extending hands to strangers in the middle of a battlefield. they’re prioritizing trivial things. it’s similar to cas wanting to kill jesse for the greater good, but sam and dean wouldn’t let him be a casualty. i’m pleasantly surprised this is being explored because sam and dean have always been about getting a win. just saving someone. cas has been a soldier with tunnel vision, so i only just realized he’s never spilled into the gaps of what it means to be human. to not think about heaven, hell, or earth, but individuals existing in these spaces. the gaps that dean is now exposing him to.

i said before that i think cas is now in love with dean, but now i’m also certain he doesn’t know it because he has no idea yet what that kind of love is. it’s more than friendship, but it’s not quite family. yet dean is the one person cas feels the most guilt about disappointing. dean’s is the trust cas is desperate not to lose. so, cas watching how dean loves the world, strangers, and doing it because dean needs to, seems like it’s gonna split cas’s perception of love. i don’t know when the romantic aspects will emerge, they feel a long way away, but leaning into love through dean, especially after this episode, will inevitably turn into realizing his love for him. starting with the world and people around dean before peeling back layers, finally reaching the two of them.

however, this is all being tainted by cas’s betrayal, which i feel coming. but still, it shows how guilt-ridden cas is for lying to sam and dean. dean even appears none the wiser, which can only mean he trusts cas the most and will feel the most betrayed. it’s like the kids in the episode. sam and dean connecting with the brothers was sweet. dean shared a moment with the younger one because they both had experience with being non-verbal, but of course that one became a monster. not too different from how dean might be viewing cas soon. dean looked heartbroken over it. so, i know things aren’t going well, but they seem to be on a trajectory that’ll unveil more of what they’ve been building up to — actual romantic love.
