if were talking about long running arcs my favourite has to be the religious war saga that spans from 10-13.5, ive talked about it at length before but i think its a perfect encapsulation of touhous skill at satire and commentary.

if i need to choose one single title in the series as the best self-contained plot point though, id have to say the 17th touhou project, touhou kikeijuu ~ wily beast and weakest creature., has a fantastic freestanding story, one that took a lot of risks with how tonally bleak it got in comparison to the rest of the series, and i respect it immensely for that (shame about the gameplay side of things). ive seen it described as touhous take on cyberpunk, or as zun using his enjoyment of shin megami tensei to make a better shin megami tensei plot than the franchise itself has, and that tracks.

17 introduces a setting of animal youkai in the middle of a resource war, with different organized factions vying for control of property in the form of human spirits, rendered an oppressed class in this realm. these factions all have contrasting, equally morally dubious ideals, ranging from an autocrat that promises peacetime under totalitarian rule to a cutthroat anarcho-capitalist. in a series without truly immoral antagonists most of the time, choosing to introduce multiple characters who are the closest to villains the series has seen yet is a decision that i think payed off big-time, and its still continuing to do so in future titles seeing as this arc of the series hasnt yet concluded in full.

worldbuilding-wise, my favourite aspect of the lore of the setting has to be the corrupt, barely-functional bureaucracy of the afterlife. the way that tenkai is a gated community, rejecting people they dont think deserve the privilege of ascending to its high-class lifestyle, so they rig the system to pretend as if its population is full despite clearly still accepting nepotism babies like tenshi into the gates. the way this backfires and raises the population density of jigoku so much that they have to downsize and move to a new location. the way the budget of jigoku is so unsustainable that they have to set up stands along the road of liminality to raise funding. its hilarious and i love every bit of it. theres so much irony to dig into in this aspect of gensoukyou and i love it whenever zun expands on it.

as for the one i think is most mischaracterized i would absolutely say komachi, for reasons explained in that post and here

in general, my favorite touhou is Kaikidsn (Mystic Square). but from the windows era, probably Kishinjou (DDC) or Kikeijuu (WBaWC).

COMMENTS: I’ve always tried to stick to “1 Track Per Game”, as futile as that is with only 10 musical slots.

The tracks I’ve pretty much always voted are Cinderella Cage, True Administrator (HM ver.), Capital City of Flowers, Green Eyed Jealousy, Cosmic Mind, Locked Girl and (usually) Faith is for the Transient People

I switched out Sanae’s theme for Youkai Mountain and Secret God Matara for Concealed Four Seasons (which I’ve grown to prefer as Okina’s theme). Idolatrize World was an immediate favorite and it pushed out Home Planet (which I don’t remember voting). I also put in Pristine Beat bc of Tsukumo Solidarity. Kasen’s theme got pushed out bc I was just really into ULiL last poll.

I really don’t like voting the music category just because 10 votes is not enough. There are so, so, so many other tracks I’ve never gotten a chance to vote before (shout outs to Bell of Avici, Eternal Short Lived Reign, Maple Dream, Satori Maiden, Reincarnation, Lovely Mound of Cherry Blossoms, Futatsuiwa from Sado, Captain Murasa, Candid Friend, Strawberry Crisis, Grimoire of Alice-

COMMENTS: I’ve actually only voted “Works” once (in the 14th Poll).

Forbidden Scrollery is still my favorite piece of Touhou media. Urban Legend in Limbo is my favorite Touhou game period, just because I love fighters and ULiL’s amazingly balanced, multi-character plot.

I didn’t vote Wild and Horned Hermit last time, but it took the series ending for me to realize how much I love that series (and how much I’m gonna miss Kasen T_T). Ten Desires is a game I enjoy for every aspect other than the gameplay, ironically enough. While I don’t enjoy Trance, I enjoy every other aspect of the game, like the graphic design (which is just SO pleasing), the cast of characters (Mamizou and Seiga are amongst ZUN’s best creations) and the music (it’s not the series’ best, but it’s still really easy listening)

As for Wily Beast and Weakest Creature, eh why not. I’m still absolutely in LOVE with WBaWC’s cast and story. The fact that I enjoy the game is also a pleasant surprise (UFO’s, er, UFO system, is one of my least favorite sub-mechanics)

favorite and least favorite touhou games and why (cast? gameplay? story? tell me.)

fave games are shinreibyou (13) and danmaku amanojaku (14.3) for different reasons

13 has the largest amount of cast members im very attached to on average in a single game, its visual aesthetic and its ost's soundfont are huge favourites of mine, its introduction of taoism as a major player in the religion war arc is interesting, and it completes the plot setup for the events of touhou gumonkuju ~ symposium of post-mysticism. which is my favourite written work in the franchise if you dont count the concept records. plus it reintroduces spell practice for the first time since 8 which is a godsend. i dont really love the divine spirit/trance mode gimmick and i think its pretty half-baked in execution but everything else about the game besides the gameplay makes up for that. and also it created my fave ship hehehe.

14.3 however is my fave in terms of gameplay, its concept is so fun and executed perfectly and i had a blast with it. its a spinoff where the idea is you are up against danmaku patterns that are impossible to dodge normally, but you are still able to "cheat" by using items that let you delete patches of bullets, wrap around to the opposite side of the screen, turn invincible for a split second, etc. HOWEVER none of the bullet patterns are ever actually impossible, theyre just extremely challenging with a super low margin for error, so trying to see if you can solve the danmaku patterns without using your "cheats" adds an extra risk reward factor and turns the experience into a bit of a puzzle game. its sick as hell. a no-items run is planned for this years gdq if that sounds interesting

LEAST fave games are probably koumakyou (6) and kikeijuu (17)

6 because its just. not very good despite the hype for it. its clunky and unpolished but not in a way thats charming to me like the pc98 games are, and its plot feels extremely out of place with the tone of the windows era. theres no political satire or subtext its just a cheesy run of the mill shmup. if i want what 6 offers ill play a cave game or something instead

17 because as much as i adore that titles story and subtext and worldbuilding and all the things it plays around with conceptually from the bottom of my heart, jesus CHRIST that is a visual overload nightmare of a game. i dont have photosensitivity issues and it still made me sick. there is no justifying such bright flashing backgrounds like 17s that late into zuns career its worse than some of the stuff in 5s backgrounds (sorry 5 ily despite this). that coupled with the fact that you have 3 separate coloured giant flashing power ups on the screen all the time with the wolf/eagle/otter spirits makes it hell on the eyes. its so weird how this is the only windows era game that has these eyestrain problems but they made me have to give up trying to finish it, let alone do a 1cc run. please zun never do something like that again

opinions on video games I played in 2019

Super Smash Bros Ultimate: Picked this up when I got my Switch and this definitely earned its title. Really fun adventure mode, Spirit collecting was a fun diversion, and had a lot of fun with multiplayer when I had a chance to play it with a few other people on a trip.

Warframe: Decided to try this out since a few other friends of mine were into it. Amazingly generous for an F2P game, and a lot of personality in its world and characters.

Etrian Oddysey Nexus: I was anticipating this quite a bit at launch, but for some reason I didn't entirely get into it and kind of stalled out sometime around the second stratum boss. Should get back to it, but not really not feeling particularly drawn.

Phantasy Star Online 2 – Episode 5/6: Still not really enthusiastic about the gear treadmill in this game and only really picked it up as a group activity, but the Nemes Ange EQ is everything I love about it

Sonic Forces: I don't actually dislike this one. It's not Generations and it's definitely no Mania, but I like it more than Lost World. I'd put it on par with Colors, I guess? The create-a-character mechanic is surprisingly charming if limited and the way it actually controls is actually pretty fun.

Eternal – Dark Frontier/The Flame of Xulta: Still loving the Sealed events, and loving the addition of cards like Insignias and Evenhanded Golem which require putting more thought into deck construction.

Final Fantasy XIV – Shadowbringers: this really earned its place as my favorite of the FF14 expansions. Great plot, great locales, lots of fun throwbacks to other FF games, and aaaa the music aaaaaaa Touhou Kikeijuu – Wily Beast and Weakest Creature: I think I need to give this another playthrough or two to properly appreciate it, but the mechanics are fine, the character designs are good, and the music is amazing even by typical Touhou standards.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses: Was initially hesitant to pick this up, but after seeing that even people who had been burned by FE in the past were enjoying this game, I felt like I had to check this out. I have not regretted the decision. I think I have spent more time with this game alone than I did my WiiU

Destiny 2: Decided to try this on the recommendation of a few friends. It was fun for a bit, but I didn't feel gripped by it the way I did by Warframe.

The 17th installment in the Touhou Project series, titled "Touhou Kikeijuu: Wily Beast & Weakest Creature," has been announced. It'll feature playable characters Reimu, Marisa, and Youmu. The game is described as having an animal spirit theme that's a bit darker and aggressive in style.

The trial version will be released at Reitaisai on May 5th. The full version is expected to be available this Summer.
