First on CNN: Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras’ tour could break $2 billion in North American ticket sales alone

Taylor Swift’s era-defining “Eras” tour is flying like a jet stream, high above the music scene — by billions of dollars.

The tour could gross $2.2 billion in North American ticket sales alone, according to August survey data from research firm QuestionPro provided to CNN exclusively. That unprecedented total represents primary ticket sales for the US shows that Swift just concluded in Los Angeles, plus a second North American leg coming next year.

The estimated totals are the latest example of the incredible demand for entertainment and experiences that has helped boost the economy, and more specifically, is a staggering show of Swift’s star power and influence on local US economies.

The average price of pre-sale and first sale tickets was $455.78, and Swift has 68 shows total in North America. The survey did not take into account whether respondents bought one ticket or multiple tickets.

The average attendance per show was 72,459, accounting for closed off areas and floor seats, according to QuestionPro data.

That comes to $2.2 billion — and that would make “Eras” the highest-grossing tour ever. Elton John’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour was the previous record holder, grossing over $887 million from 2018 to 2023, according to Larry Miller, director of the music business program at New York University Steinhardt.

“We’re talking about a global pop artist who faces virtually infinite demand for those tickets,” said Miller of Swift.

“Eras” has become one of the biggest social events of the year, with concertgoers doling out thousands of dollars on tickets, outfits, transportation and travel accommodations. Concertgoers participating in a QuestionPro poll of 862 people who say they attended at least one “Eras” concert said they spent an average of $291.62 each on their outfits, $214.80 on merchandise and $131.48 for food and drinks.

‘An economic phenomenon’

“Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras’ tour is rewriting the playbook of entertainment economics,” said Chris Leyden, director of growth marketing at SeatGeek. “She’s not just a performer — she’s an economic phenomenon.”

The average resale price of an “Eras” ticket was $1,607, SeatGeek told CNN. That’s up 741% from her “Reputation” tour in 2018, during which the average resale ticket price was $191.

A representative for Swift did not respond to CNN’s requests for comment.

Swift finished her last US “Eras” show of this year in Los Angeles in August — but not without adding international tour dates, another North American leg of the tour, announcing re-recordings of her albums “1989” and “Speak Now” and releasing the latter album. She kicks off the Latin American leg of her tour later this month.

So far, the economic impact of Swift’s blockbuster tour has been wide-ranging.

Earlier this month, truckers for the tour were given $100,000 checks each, which one trucking company head called “life-changing.”

Food banks across the country in the communities where she has performed have said they received hefty donations from Swift, allowing pantries to replenish their inventories. One food bank network in Arizona said Swift’s donation allowed it to send several tractor-trailers filled with 40,000 pounds of fresh produce to its member food banks.

“Taylor Swift’s donation certainly helped at a time when we’re seeing the need climb and climb and climb,” Terri Shoemaker, a spokesperson at Arizona Food Bank Network, told CNN.

Retailers have also seen a boost from concertgoers looking for clothes that match the theme of Swift’s “eras.” Shops are marketing outfits featuring everything from sundresses and metallic boots to romantic, breezy long dresses and daring red gowns to Swifites shopping for concert looks.

Swift even earned a nod in the Federal Reserve’s Beige Book, a collection of survey responses from businesses around the country. According to one business, “May was the strongest month for hotel revenue in Philadelphia since the onset of the pandemic, in large part due to an influx of guests for the Taylor Swift concerts in the city,” Fed officials wrote.

Swift kicked off the highly-anticipated “Eras” — her first tour since her “Reputation” stadium tour in 2018 — in March. The show features an expansive, roughly three-hour long set list that spans 14 years of her career.

The Ticketmaster meltdown

Hell was the journey for Swifties who sought tickets, though it brought those who secured them heaven. The heavy demand snarled Ticketmaster’s website last November, when pre-sale tickets first went live, leaving some verified fans locked out even with access codes. That spurred some Swifties to file a lawsuit against Ticketmaster and lawmakers to grill a top executive from parent-company Live Nation Entertainment during a three-hour hearing.

Ticketmaster did not respond to CNN’s requests for comment.

Fans who couldn’t secure tickets weren’t deterred from heading to concert venue parking lots to listen from there, according to data analytics platform Placer.ai.

During the three nights of the tour’s stop in Nashville, Tennessee, about 33% of the Nissan Stadium’s total crowd during the concerts stood outside the venue in parking lots to tailgate. Groups also gathered at stops in Philadelphia and Arlington, Texas.

“We’ve never seen anything like this,” said Ethan Chernofsky, senior vice president of marketing at Placer.ai, noting that the phenomenon is reminiscent of die-hard sports fans tailgating outside stadiums. “That’s just not concert behavior.”

Swift’s tour is slated to conclude in late 2024, provided she doesn’t extend the tour yet again. Miller says that while it’s tough to imagine another musical artist beating her “Eras” record, it’s not impossible to see Swift topping it herself.

“When it comes to Taylor, I’ve learned to never say never,” he said.

Dreadzone - “Dread Town”: The eternal spirit of 2-Tone lives on this bouncy single from veteran British reggae/dance outfit featuring lead vocals by Emily Capell who borrows the style of Amy Winehouse and the attitude of Lily Allen, on a joyous celebration of London's multi racial musical melting pot. 11. Pearl Charles -“Givin it Up”: Last year I stumbled on Pearl’s brilliant ABBA inspired “Only For Tonight” and was subsequently blown away by the whole album. She’s back again with another lush and luminous 70’s styled single whose swirling strings, memorable hook, and slyly funky finish made it one of favourites of the year. (Hollywood Fun Fact #2: Pearl is the daughter of Larry Charles ofSeinfeld/Curb fame). 12. The Dip - “Real Contender”: Big horns and big hooks from a Pacific northwest band that gives me Jamie Cullum vibes. 13. Mapache - “Light My Fire”: Cosmic folk rock harmonies for your mellow mood. 14. River Kittens - “Hate To Break It”: Speaking of harmonies, this break-up torch ballad sounds like it came straight off Shelby Lynne’s country/soul masterpiece, “I Am Shelby Lynne”. 15. The California Honeydrops - “In Your Arms”: More soul horns and a chugging Stax rhythm from Oakland outfit who sounds like they may have been fans of Oaktown homeboys Tony! Toni! Tone'! 16. The Harlem Gospel Travelers - “Nothing But His Love”: Nope, this is not a gospel tune, just some sweet vintage styled soul and harmony in praise of a higher power. 17. Miko Marks/Ressurectors “Feel Like Going Home”: Rising star Miko Marks and the guys may actually get closer to church on this one. Her album has blues, country, and gospel influences, think The Staples Singers and The Band on the "Last Waltz, All of which reminds me there was a pretty great posthumous release this year from the late Leon Helm and the very much alive Mavis Staples.18. Lee Bains + The Glory Fires - “(In Defense of the) 40 Hour Work Week: Blue collar country rock in the spirit of The Drive By Truckers.

19. Titus Anddronicus - “Give Me Grief”: A jangly, angsty pop anthem from post punk Jersey boys. 20. Pinegrove - “Alaska”: More catchy indie pop from Jersey (Montclair!) 21. Wet Leg - Wet Dream: Isle Of Wright indie pop duo exploded on the scene last year with two great singles, "Chaise Lounge" and this one. A proper album was released in '22, so the song still qualifies, and I get to make up for missing them first time around. 22. Hurray For The Riff Raff - RHODODENDRON: Always moving in new directions, Alynda Segarra and crew are back. This time they bring the spirit of The Velvet Underground with them. 23. Melissa Carper - “Ramblin Soul”: Old-time Texas Swing from the woman they call the “The Hill-Billie Holiday”. 24. Taj Mahal/Ry Cooder - “Hooray Hooray”: Roots rock veterans and former Rising Sons bandmates reunite over 50 years later to pay tribute to blues legends Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. Hooray Hooray indeed. 25. North Mississippi AllStars - “See The Moon”: These guys have always drawn on the southern rock and blues they grew up on. The connection runs deeper on this album with the addition of Lamar Williams Jr, son of former Allman Brother Band bassist Lamar Williams. 26. Wilco - “Falling Apart” (Right Now): I’ve enjoyed all of Wilco’s sonic explorations over the years. but If I’m gonna be honest, I always loved their early alt country outings the most. 27. Reigning Sound - “Lonely Ghost”: This long running Memphis garage rock band broke up late last year…but they released this Dylanesque single early this year. So, have they “ghosted” us or not? Either way, it’s the final rattle of a hard working band at the end of the road, but going out defiantly.

28. John Doe - “Never Coming Back”: Former X-Man John Doe reminds us you can’t go home again in this dark, moody song with a memorable hook that will stick with you and your subconscious. 29. Valerie June - “Use Me”: No, not the classic Bill Withers tune, (it actually has the opposite sentiment), She has an idiosyncratic vocal style, but like Bill Withers, Valerie June is the real deal. 30. Deslondes - “Good To Go”: A charming world weary tale of hard luck and never giving up. 31. Billy Swan - “Don’t Be Cruel”: Season two of “Euphoria” opened with this haunting 1974 cover of the Elvis classic and it blew me away in much the same way the show does. I couldn't stop listening to it for weeks.

Day 17- Someone you would want to switch lives with for one day and why

I recently purchased a coffee table film photography book entitled "Nothing Has Changed" by Larry Niehues, a photographer from France who traveled to all 50 U.S. states documenting both the mundane and mythic visions of America as seen through the eyes of an outsider. As an avid traveler and Americana enthusiast myself, this project deeply resonated with me. Although I had grown up most of my life in Hawaii—with only a handful of visits to San Diego, Seattle, and Washington D.C. throughout my early to late childhood—I still culturally identified with being American more than anything else. I understood the zeitgeist of America throughout the ages, and recognized the vast majority of its traditions, motifs, icons, and cultural representations. Perhaps this was due to Hawaii's colonial annexation into the United States and post-WWII statehood, both of witnessed the influx of a dominant military presence throughout the archipelago, and by extension mainland American culture. And yet Hawaii is patently distinct from the 49 other states, and for this reason I was never viscerally immersed within what one might consider American culture until I went to university in California.

Traveling extensively throughout California, I explored everywhere from small farm towns to sprawling urban metropolises, from Skid Row to the Sierra Nevadas, the edge of Oregon to the Mexican border, Disneyland to the redwood forests. And with each trip I took, I was able to wear different hats, whether it was as a wandering banjo minstrel touring with a band or as a college mock trial coach commanding a team of student competitors. My travels were not just limited to the Golden State, either, and every opportunity I had, I dipped my feet in almost every major region of the U.S.—the Pacific Northwest, the East Coast, the Southwest, the North Midwest, and the American South (with Texas as its own entity, of course). As an Asian-American, I traveled within a liminal space as not white, black, or even brown. As a result, I slipped through the cultural cracks of the subconscious American identity and existed within my own skin wherever I went; regarded with neither hostility nor celebration. I was not necessarily seen as invisible, a la Ralph Ellison's "unseen" protagonist, but I was mostly viewed with neutral indifference.

Traveling has been one of the most directly impactful learning experiences that physically and symbolically brought me to the edge of—and well past—my comfort zone, yielding new insights from real life encounters and volumes of knowledge that classroom instruction alone could never comparatively achieve. It was only by stepping foot into new cultural terrains, which were vast as the American continent itself, that I was able to develop an appreciation for imagery and iconography that reflected an imagined American past and historical heritage.

This is why I am so particularly drawn to Larry Niehue's photography project "Nothing Has Changed." Being able to visit every single state in the union has become a life goal of mine, and Niehue preserves the sentiments of a fading past way of life in America—the lonely diners, the vintage motels, the classic cars, the cowboys and farmers, the truckers and the transients. Niehue's work also inspired me to craft my own photographic style of candid storytelling behind the lens, specifically through the nostalgic imperfection of 35mm film. I would want to trade lives with Mr. Niehues purely for the sheer wealth of experiences his travels has led him down behind the camera and beyond. When he is not photographing the sights and sensations of yesteryear's America, he collaborates with up-and-coming and established musical artists throughout Nashville, Los Angeles, and elsewhere, and also photographs motorcycle races and events. He has lately been traveling with the band The Black Keyes as their official concert photographer, revisiting a circuit of the major American cities to immortalize snapshots of these musical performances for publicity and posterity purposes. Just like Larry Niehues, it is my hope to capture the world around me as it comes through my camera's lens, one snapshot, sojourn, and story at a time.
