On one side tech entrepreneur like Jack Ma advocating for 9-9-6 work culture & other side people fight for 40 hours equality! But, there are some global leaders like Narendra Modi, Warren Buffett, Marissa Mayer, Elon Musk who work more than 100+ hours to accomplish their goals.

In this diverse argument, At the age of 46, Elon Musk has innovated and built four revolutionary multibillion-dollar companies in completely different fields — Paypal (Financial Services), Tesla Motors (Automotive) and SpaceX (Aerospace), Boring (Transportation).

How these people achieve so much within a short span of time??

How did he able to manage all these things ??

First Principle: The Building Blocks of True Knowledge!!

First-principles thinking is one of the best ways to reverse-engineer complicated problems. the idea is to break down complicated problems into basic elements and then reassemble them from the ground up. It’s one of the best ways to learn to think for yourself, unlock your creative potential, and move from linear to non-linear results.

When Elon Musk’s started development of the TESLA electric car, many experts felt that electric vehicles could not be popular because of battery costs. The $600/kW is the market price, The battery has always been so expensive. Which increased in 2/3rd of production cost.

Why it's $600/kW ??

“That’s just the way they will always be because that’s the way they have been in the past”.

However, Elon Musk does not agree!! He needs to understand the root cause of the Problem, He applied First-principles methodology!!

What are the material constituents of the batteries?

What is the spot market value of the material constituents?

When he dig dipper into the ground, basic things like cobalt, nickel, aluminum, carbon, and some polymers for separation, and steel can enough to produce a battery pack;

Next, If we bought that on a London Metal Exchange, what would each of these things cost? Oh, god, it’s … $80 per kilowatt-hour. So, clearly, you just need to think of clever ways to take those materials and combine them into the shape of a battery cell, and you can have batteries that are much, much cheaper than anyone realizes.

Through these “basic facts”, Elon Musk and the team will further analyze and experiment each part of the raw materials and re-engineer each work process.

Finally, he and the team will optimize the original parts and add a comprehensive improvement of the production method, which significantly reduces the Cost-of electric vehicles.

Musk used first principles thinking not only for making inexpensive battery packs for his Tesla cars but also for building cheaper rockets for his other space exploration company SpaceX.

The result of such thinking was astonishing!!

The Basic: Analogy vs Axioms

In our day to day life, we tend to use what is known as Comparison Thinking, this is when we do what comes naturally and normally to us and reason through analogy. What this means is that we make decisions and judgment calls based on what we’ve seen, heard or done from our experiences or from others. Knowing the outcome due to past experiences, we either repeat or iterate slightly to suit the current situation. This is an easy mode of thinking, and for the most part effective, but also offers no innovation or large changes.

Thinking from First Principles. In this, you take a problem and break it down into its fundamental parts and truths, until you get to the bare bones as it were. Once you’ve eliminated everything down to its constituent parts then you start reasoning up from there. This is a harder mode of thinking, but does offer better results, is far more effective and creates recognizable change.

Analogy thinking: Cook vs Chef ?? He compares people and how they behave to cooks and chefs. With a chef, he means a person who invents their own recipe, while a cook is someone who follows an already existing recipe.

Some people usually behave like cooks and follow recipes from a cookbook, while others prefer to come up with their own. A cook takes some ingredients and goes through a series of steps to come up with a standard dish. On the other hand, a chef might use those same ingredients, but mix them up in new and original ways and come up with a new dish. For both of these guys, the ingredients were the first principles, but the way they used them was different.

Reasoning from analogy: Build Vs Hire? As a startup, It's difficult to understand the new rocket technology & build from scratch. so purchase the unused rocket from existing companies/Govt agencies like NASA/ISRO but the cost of purchasing a rocket was astronomical — up to $65 million.

Reasoning from first principles: let’s look at the first principles. What is a rocket made of? Aerospace-grade aluminum alloys, plus some titanium, copper, carbon fiber. Then I asked, what is the value of those materials on the commodity market? It turned out that the materials cost of a rocket was around two percent of the typical price.

Within a few years, SpaceX had cut the price of launching a rocket by nearly 10x while still making a profit. Musk used first principles thinking to break the situation down to the fundamentals, bypass the high prices of the aerospace industry, and create a more effective solution.

Minimal Product Design:

Problem: Create a login system for a web/mobile app.

Reasoning from analogy: Most apps require a user to provide a username, email address and password, with the password confirmed twice!! That seems to be the best practice, so I’ll do the same.

Reasoning from first principles: What’s the least information I need to collect from the user to make the app functional? The app creates a page for each user that is their online identity hub. I want their full name to be displayed at the top of the page, so I need to collect that. I won’t display a username anywhere in the app, so Do I really need that?

But if two users have the same name, how will I create a unique URL slug for each? I guess I could add a randomized number to the slug, and do a check before saving that ensures the number is unique. I’ll then need to collect the user’s email in-case they forget their password. I probably don’t need to verify their password twice, since the app will allow them to easily reset it as long as they have access to their email account.

Artists thinking:

Reasoning from analogy: This generation artist learns drawing & painting. Mostly they expertise in one specific area. they unable to visualize depth & authenticity of the image. (not a polymath).

Reasoning from first principles: It’s hard to talk about the First principle thinking without mentioning the impressive genius of Leonardo da Vinci. Before writes in the world famous Mona Lisa, he knows the art, anatomy, engineer, science, biology, optics & experimenter which makes him a renaissance!! With all these basics principle, da Vinci will draw the picture of the millennium.

Neem Coated Urea

Problem: The urea was subsidized for agriculture use but it was being diverted to non-agricultural purposes, chemical factories.This lead to a shortage of urea to the farmer.

How to solve this ??

How it reaches to the Farmers or beneficiaries??

Reasoning from analogy: Think to avoid the middlemen & directly distribute to the farmers. But It's a challenging job to distribute proper fertilizers, seeds to the 110 million farmers across India. Either we need to * Produce excess adequate amount of the Urea. * Create a task force which monitors the distributions on various level.

Reasoning from first principles: The GoI has mandated neem coating of urea while producing it in the Factories!! Expect Agriculture, coated urea is not good for any other commercial usage.

Why ??

🔸Urea is highly subsidized in India for agricultural usage. However, people were using the subsidized urea for other industrial applications due to its high nitrogen content. Hence Neem coating was adopted to prevent usage of Urea for any other application than farming as Neem coating doesn’t affect agriculture but does so for industrial usage.

🔸Urea is very volatile in nature. If it is applied directly on the crops, it is released very rapidly. This results in high usage of urea by farmers on the crop thereby hampering the quality crop and soil. Neem coating slow downs the release of urea to crops. Also, Neem is an excellent ingredient for farming which improves plant and soil quality.

A 3.7k Word Essay About the Failures of Future Pop and the Present State of Perfume

Just something I needed to get off my chest. It took me almost a week to get this done, but here it is.

When discussing a work of art, not only does it need to be evaluated as a product in and of itself, but also as part of a larger context. In the case of Perfume, this context includes but is not limited to: their own team’s intentions, the expectations their team has set for their fans and the general public, and the sonic landscape of the rest of the music industry. How critically and commercially successful an album is depends on how these aspects interact and come together. So before I can discuss why Future Pop has failed, it’s important to set the context into which it was released, starting with the purpose of every album in their discography.

GAME was Perfume’s real introduction to the general public after finally getting a breakthrough hit with Polyrhythm. That’s why it had catchy melodies and unique but still easily digestible production. Triangle’s role was to further GAME’s legacy, pushing GAME’s sound to be as mainstream as possible while still retaining Perfume’s signature production in order to attain even more commercial success. The era’s singles did just that, but the album itself went in the complete opposite direction. Triangle was Nakata self-indulging in 80’s pop and maxing out the auto-tune to the point of concealing the natural charms of the trio, and this alienated a lot of the general public. Thus JPN’s purpose was to gain back the general public’s favor, culminating in their most commercial and mainstream album to date. While this did recapture the general public’s interest, there were long-time fans that were put off by how mainstream Perfume’s sound had become. This brings us to LEVEL3, which served to rebrand them as a global electronic act, once again making Perfume distinct from the mainstream. The album still retained the catchy melodies of JPN, but featured more experimental instrumentation under the guise of EDM for better marketability to a global audience. With the success of LEVEL3 on overseas iTunes, as well as their sold-out overseas concerts, Perfume’s team starts pushing to increase the size of their Western fanbase. And so enters COSMIC EXPLORER, their first era and album featuring explicitly foreign sounds. But perhaps in an attempt not to scare off Western audiences with Japanese lyrics, the album featured more lengthy instrumentals than ever, reducing the amount of actual singing by the trio, and alienating plenty of the fanbase and general public.

And so we finally arrive in the Future Pop era. The COSMIC EXPLORER Tour was over and Perfume needed a new goal to replace Madison Square Garden after struggling to sell-out their North American leg. With Mikiko and Daito being involved in the 2016 Olympics closing ceremony, the answer was clear as day – the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Thus began a renewed focus on Japan rather than the West, an intent reflected clearly in TOKYO GIRL. The production was as inoffensive and simple as possible to please the general public, and it worked. TOKYO GIRL became only their third track to sell 100k digitally (after Spring of Life and FLASH). So having re-established themselves as mainstream artistes after the slight backlash from COSMIC EXPLORER, they began campaigning in earnest to perform at the Olympics. And this is where If you wanna and Mugen Mirai come in, heavy in new future bass influences. Future bass, thus, in this context was less about attracting more Western audiences, but more an effort to have Perfume embody the concept of “future” in the eyes of the general public, and to make them top picks for representing Japan in the Olympics. And this was what Future Pop was being set up to do as well, via the album’s photoshoot and comments from Perfume themselves, such as during the album announcement when A~chan said Nakata was creating a “new era in music”. So with Future Pop’s placement and purpose in Perfume’s discography now laid out, we can start discussing whether it achieved what it was supposed to do. Was it a “new era in music”?

In short: no, not at all. And I think that much of its issues as an album is best encapsulated in how a “dusty floppy disc” is referred to as an “ultra future loop” in Chourairin. Rather than “pop of the future”, it is “pop that makes you think of the future”, a theme highlighted by the contrast between the old and current sounds being fused on this album, as well as its lyrics. Just like how every album has been shaped by the criticisms of its predecessor, Future Pop is no different. The older Perfume sounds and relatively increased vocal sections in the album tracks strongly indicates that its main concern was regaining the older fans that were put-off by COSMIC EXPLORER. Unfortunately, all of the older sounds were added superficially, with nothing having been done to make them fit into the current soundscape of the industry. This is especially so for Tenkuu, which sounds like Nakata had the trio re-record a long lost Complete Best era B-side (think Foundation and wonder2). It’s telling Nakata doesn’t seem to understand that it’s never been the instrumentation itself, but the innovative spark behind the production that attracted listeners to Perfume. Though the production may have been innovative a decade ago, simply rehashing it now without any deconstruction in its use is regressive. Another big issue that this album has, especially to long-time fans, is Nakata’s complete disregard for Perfume’s public image and the narrative they’ve been pushing for the past year about maturing and turning 30. Forcing them to sing cutesy idol-like songs like Tiny Baby this late into their career with their voices pitched up to oblivion so as to sound like teenagers is the most jarring thing for fans that have matured together with the trio. So no, this album doesn’t achieve what it was supposed to do, nor what it actually set out to do.

However, more pressing is that a deconstructive take on “Future Pop” was absolutely not an album that Perfume should have released, not at this point in their careers when they are trying to be recognized as a guiding light for the future of the Japanese music industry. And especially not right after COSMIC EXPLORER played the space theme straight, truly committing to what it had promised, because people expected the same straightforward approach with Future Pop, and they were in fact (mis)led to believe so. In other words, no one expected what was to come, and so no one really wanted it from them. But at this point, I think it’s worthy to note that Perfume have never actually given their fanbase what they wanted. GAME fans never got another Secret Secret, Triangle fans never got another Edge, JPN fans never got another Fushizen na Girl, LEVEL3 fans never got another 1mm, and COSMIC EXPLORER fans didn’t get another Miracle Worker. Perfume’s sound has always been jumping from one genre to another, decided solely by the whims of Nakata, and so it is inevitable that there will always be people that are alienated with each change. The only reason Perfume has managed to remain so popular after a decade in the industry is because they’ve consistently put out quality work regardless of genre, drawing in more new listeners whenever one becomes disinterested. So if we put aside the album’s (mis)direction, does Future Pop stand on its own as a quality album?

Once again, my answer is no. Future Pop clocks in at 42m 3s, their shortest album to date by far, and yet not every second is worth listening to. Start-Up doesn’t really lead into Future Pop, nor does it really set up any atmosphere, and even if it did, Future Pop sets up its own atmosphere well enough, so that’s close to a minute wasted. Future Pop’s 15s outro also has the same issue. All this time wasted could have gone to fixing Chourairin’s abrupt and generic ending. Which brings us to the next problem, the fact that many of the songs on this album have very similar structures. Future Pop, If you wanna, TOKYO GIRL, Let Me Know, Chourairin, Mugen Mirai, and Everyday. That’s more than half the album that are pretty much their first halves repeated once more, with very little progression instrumentally, if any at all. And while the two halves structure isn’t immediately a bad thing, it does mean that there are only two hook sections, making it difficult for the already short songs to leave an impression on listeners. Further aggravating the issue is the lack of an infectiously catchy sing along chorus that has become synonymous with Perfume’s music over the years. TOKYO GIRL barely counts, and even then, its chorus is only sung twice which makes it harder to catch on. It also doesn’t help that this album is lyrically weak. A lot of the lyrics are saying the same thing, and it all bleeds together. Future Pop, TOKYO GIRL, Mugen Mirai, and Tenkuu are literally all about reaching for somewhere else in time, with imageries of light. It’s true that a lot of COSMIC EXPLORER’s tracks were about travelling, but it had a wider variety of tracks, so the monotony issue wasn’t as serious as it is here. And then we have Tiny Baby and Chourairin, which are largely just a bunch of random words thrown together. There is some semblance of coherent meaning in the lyrics of these two songs, but it’s all hidden beneath layers and layers of clutter. So even if listeners pause the music to take a deeper look at what they’re saying, there’s not much to make out. With all of these issues put together, Future Pop as a whole makes for an objectively forgettable listen – everything simply passes by before you know it. So no, it’s not a quality album. But hey, every act will have a weak album every now and then, right? As long as their hearts are in the right place, things will get better! Can’t we all just move past this and keep on supporting Perfume like we always have? So it finally comes down to a question of whether Perfume’s team still cares.

The quality of Nakata’s music has been a concern for quite some time, but Future Pop is the first album where it’s so explicitly clear that he doesn’t give a damn about who Perfume are or what they’re trying to achieve. Even if we set aside the questionable production decisions, there’s just no overlooking the laziness of including every single track of the era on the album. Worse still are their stylists who have only grown more and more brazen ever since 2011. It started with recycling lazy single-color cookie cutter outfits for live performances, which while not ideal, was acceptable. Now they’re just throwing a random bunch of random fabric together and calling it “avant-garde” (because Perfume are all about being cutting-edge right?), no thought at all about whether the colors and materials mesh well, or whether the silhouette of the outfits flatter their bodies. The covers of their singles and their albums always seemed to escape those patchwork outfits, as if they understood covers were sacred ground that should not be messed with, but with Future Pop, even that distinction has disappeared. And then we have Perfume’s creative directors, who, ever since STAR TRAIN, seem to have been selecting covers and promotional images from photo shoots by throwing darts while blindfolded. Not only is there no thought behind which photos work better as posters, artiste profiles, or covers, they don’t even make sure that the photos they’re putting out are flattering for all three members. But at the very least, even if the photos chosen were less than satisfactory, the visual concepts have always been up to a certain standard. Future Pop is nowhere close to that standard. It was already a bad decision in itself to play the “future pop” concept straight instead of following Nakata’s deconstructive take, because that led to album covers and promotional material that don’t reflect the atmosphere or sound of the album at all, which is basically false advertising. But then they also had to use cheap twine straw to represent beams of light for an album called “Future Pop” when Rhizomatiks already has tons and tons of lasers ready for use in their warehouse. Another big issue with the creative direction of this album is its limited edition. Not only is the cover atrocious, the packaging does nothing to salvage it. It’s simply the same packaging Mirai no Museum had, but with a slipcase and no comic. And then there’s also the fact that the booklet for the limited and regular editions are exactly the same. There’s just no excuse for how lazy and basic the packaging is when its title is “Future Pop”, it’s their most expensive album to date, and especially not when the team has been so much more innovative with the past three albums. The direction the creative team took with the promotion of the album is also highly problematic. It was a very questionable decision to promote COSMIC EXPLORER with the version of a track that doesn’t appear on the album proper, but at least the visuals for FLASH didn’t clash so badly with the album’s. And there was justification in that choice, because FLASH was their biggest hit since Polyrhythm, so they were forced to use it in the promotional campaign for COSMIC EXPLORER. There’s none of that justification here for having Let Me Know’s visuals go in the exact opposite direction from that of Future Pop. The wistful Let Me Know had to be chosen as the promotional lead because it was the most mainstream of the album tracks, but that’s no reason to go full nostalgia and plaid for its aesthetics without even trying to incorporate any futuristic aspects into it.

So it’s pretty clear that not one person on Perfume’s entire team bothered to actually think through what’s being done with the album, and it’s really easy as fans of the trio to simply keep on blaming their team for the shoddy work. But I think it’s time we hold the ones at the center of everything culpable, because ultimately, the ones giving the final go-ahead and enabling all of this nonsense are Perfume themselves. Since the very beginning, the trio have been perpetuating this notion that they have no control over their music or image, and that they’re just promoting what all of these talented people are giving to them. Though that may have been the truth at the beginning of their careers when they were nobodies, things have changed since then. There are tons of creators that want to collaborate with them – they have leverage now. They’re the ones that are choosing what they put on, and what they put out, and this applies to their music too. The fact that three of them were the ones who got Nakata to add the Japanese lyrics into Spending all my time shows that their opinions do matter to him. So if they had wanted to, they certainly could’ve sent Nakata a memo to tell him that the vocal tuning on the album needs to be pitched down because they’re turning 30 and it doesn’t suit the whole mature image that they’re going for. If they had wanted to, they could’ve fired their stylists the moment they were presented with those awful rags to wear on stage. And yet they didn’t – because there’s never been a need to. They’ve never been faced with any direct repercussions. Perhaps because of the many years of quality output, Japanese fans tend to ignore any flaws altogether, blindly purchasing and consuming new releases, simply believing that things will get better. The Japanese public and any unconvinced fans don’t say anything either, because being negative would be considered rude, so they just turn the other way, silently losing interest in Perfume. So even when Perfume themselves aren’t convinced with what they’re putting out, like how A~chan was with Triangle, their products continue to sell decently. Even when they appear on stage in garbage, the crowd continues to cheer. In this sort of bubble environment without any form of criticism, it’s no wonder that the three of them would grow complacent. After all, no matter if they like their products or not, and no matter if the products are of high quality or not, even as sales continue to quietly drop, the response remains the same. “Nakata is a god!” “Perfume are goddesses!” All they have to do is put on a smile and promote whatever their team gives them to sell. But even then, none of this is an excuse to have completely given up ownership of their own brand like they have. As such, if there’s anyone that’s really to blame for the current state of affairs, it’s Perfume themselves for leaving their car on autopilot even as it continues speeding towards a cliff.

With that, for one last time, my answer is no. Future Pop was not a one-off bad decision. It’s every problem that’s been plaguing Perfume these past few years finally coming to a head in one gigantic mess, and not one person in Team Perfume, not even Perfume themselves, still care enough to clean this mess up. And so we’ve ended up in the final stages of Perfume’s career. What this means is that if poor sales of Mugen Mirai hadn’t already, Future Pop will have thrown all talk of performing for the Olympics out the window, because there’s just no way a group that’s not even relevant enough to sell 100k copies of their album in its first week is going to represent Japan in a prestigious global event. So with the Olympics now a non-factor, how many people exactly will it take for them to continue as Perfume? That’s all up to Universal and Amuse to decide, and looking at what they’ve been doing with Perfume, the end is not that far off. The marketing for Future Pop was utterly atrocious. COSMIC EXPLORER had liner notes from celebrities and an entire montage commissioned, but all Future Pop has had are cheaply-made Instagram stories and posts. This suggests that they’ve already given up on sales from the general public, and are mainly focused on getting pre-existing fans to buy the album. Why? Because they don’t even expect the general public to be interested, not after Mugen Mirai failed to even sell anywhere close to half of what FLASH did despite having had the same exposure from the Chihayafuru movie franchise. All of the ugly outfits and questionable music directions have finally alienated too much of the general public, and no amount of technological showcases is going to win back their interest or convert anyone new into fans. The social currency of the Perfume brand is at an all-time low and it’s reflected in how magazines like ROCKIN’ON JAPAN didn’t give them the cover to promote Future Pop despite always having done so when there was a big feature about them. The end of any halfway popular thing falling into obscurity is always marked with the corporations behind it shamelessly milking hardcore fans out of as much money as they can, and that’s what’s happening to Perfume right now. Instead of having a CD-only edition of Future Pop, Universal is forcing a DVD/BD filled mostly with already online material into every copy in order to inflate prices and exploit the remaining hardcore Perfume fans. Meanwhile, Amuse is having Perfume sell insanely overpriced clothing through Perfume Closet. 60 USD for a plain black cap with Perfume’s watermark on the front, 100 USD for a plain T-shirt with a little lace in its breast pocket, 180 USD for a plain black pair of slacks – it all screams exploitation of fans. Universal and Amuse are getting maximum returns for investing as little as possible, and with this business model turning in a decent profit for them, things are only going to get worse as they try to squeeze out more and more money from less and less fans.

The Perfume fan experience since 2014 has been like watching a close relative slowly but surely losing themselves to Alzheimer’s. It’s not a steady downwards spiral. In fact, even as the symptoms grow more serious, there always seem to be better days where you can see a spark of who once was. But every time you think they’ll get better, or perhaps even recover entirely, it’s always a turn for the worse. The cycle repeats until one day, you find them in hospital, bedridden and on life support because they’ve forgotten how to eat or breathe. This is where we’re at with Perfume now. They’re not dead yet, but they’re pretty damn close, and all that’s left is for Universal and Amuse to collectively pull the plug when they aren’t turning in enough of a profit from Perfume. It’s painful to keep watch by their bedside until they finally die, denied even one last gasp for air, but the worst pain of all is continuing to pray for a miracle that I know will never come. And so I’ve finally decided to turn in my stan card. I won’t be translating anymore supplementary materials, I won’t force myself to translate lyrics to Perfume songs that I don’t like, and I’ll stop checking every other day for updates - I’ll just go back to being a normal, casual fan.

I will always, always, love Perfume, but these three thirty year-old women singing in cutesy girl voices, dancing in tacky cut-and-paste dresses, and smiling as if all is right with the world even as everything around them continues to fall apart? I don’t know them.

Yeah, no. I do in fact know what rape culture is. Society encouraging men to see youthful = sexy isn’t actually about pedophilia at all, which is a mental disorder; it’s about power. Men who are attracted to women who are much younger than them have power over those women, and if men in general are encouraged to have power over women, then patriarchy maintains its power.

However, none of that has anything to do with shaving or not shaving. That’s by itself an inherently harmless choice that becomes harmful when it’s enforced. Every change to our bodies that is enforced on us for the sake of gaining male approval, whether it makes us look “younger” or “older”, is harmful. Getting breast implants, which I think even you guys would recognize is approximately the opposite of “pedophilia culture”, is harmful. Enforcing that women wear makeup is harmful. Enforcing that women be too skinny or too fat is harmful. Societies have in the past done things like demand that women damage their own necks, earlobes, or put poison in their eyes, to say nothing of foot binding and clitoral mutilation. Some of these are inherently harmless, like makeup, but become harmful when enforced. Others, like foot binding, have as their fundamental purpose harming women and making it harder for them to escape male control.

You guys and your hyperfocus on pedophilia is dangerous because you are literally giving air cover to pedophiles by declaring any number of things to be “pedophilia” that are not. If you can convince a 12 year old that she’s not pretty without a ton of makeup on, and you can convince a 30 year old that she needs plastic surgery to look 18, you’ve captured money from two demographics.

But when you specifically attack anything women (or men!) do as “this is being forced on you by pedophiles!”… first, you destroy nuance. Second, “pedophile” is a radioactive word on tumblr right now because people are using it to attack people who drew art of fully clothed teenagers of the same age kissing and holding hands; the word is losing credibility, and considering how valuable the concept is and how terrible what it represents is, this should be something we fight back against, the way we fight back against “rape” being cheapened to mean “defeated in a video game” or “forced to pay a lot of taxes.” You have a problem with people being pressured into shaving? Me too! I also have a problem with people being pressured into wearing makeup, getting breast implants, or changing their names when they get married, and your hyperfocus on “it’s all the fault of pedophiles!” is going to completely miss that two of these problems even exist.

The problem is never the specific thing that women are being pressured into doing. The problem is that they were pressured into doing it. I took up shaving when my only exposure to porn ever was to images from the 1970′s, where women were very hairy, because I hate body hair of all kinds except what’s on the tops of our heads. No one pressured me. But in today’s environment where porn is full of images of women who are fully shaven, and men feel they have the right to expect that, and treat women as gross if they’re not? Yes, that’s absolutely horrible… and in no way is calling it “pedophilia culture” a valid means of attacking it, both because it’s wrong and because it’s going to be ineffective. If the pressure was on women not to shave if they want to because “shaven women look like children”, it would be equally as bad. (BTW: shaven women do not look one single goddamn bit like children. And children with pubic hair do not look one single goddamn bit like adult women. Which is part of why I feel so strongly about this. I have personal reasons to be horrified by the conflation of “adult woman” with “has pubic hair.”)

So if you want to fight the social pressure, promoted by porn, that women *need* to shave, I am right there with you. But if you want to make up bullshit about how the societal forces training men to have a sexual interest in young women have anything to do with pedophilia, a mental disorder characterized by sexual interest in pre-pubescent children, instead of focusing on how pressure on women to meet any kind of standard enables capitalists to make money off female insecurity and how training men to be sexually interested in young women protects patriarchy by promoting relationships where men have more power than women just because they’re older, then you’re barking up the wrong tree and I cannot support you. A secret cabal of pedophiles does not rule the world. But societal forces that reward men for doing things that oppress women really do exist. Hey, more writing crap because it’s been sitting in my files for forever now and that’s no way to have your writing. I am no Emily Dickinson. This was written like years ago for the TMNT Universe and just never really came to anything. Audrey has had a lot of changes made to her and ideas for her have been lent to a lot of my other characters. I think was my honest to goodness first real OC and I have so much written for her. Anywho, here.

She came from a facility out of Manhattan. Created from two hundred and seven different gene donors, all varied species, and all very unwilling. But it was the two hundred and seventh donor that made her different from her siblings. She disconnected from her growth tank a month too early, and she was born three pounds, one ounce and fragile as an egg, with a complexion to match. The Kraang and Dr. Steele placed her survival odds at .037%. Rather than put the poor thing out of its misery, they decided to run tests on her as she stumbled her way towards death.

The problem with that was she wasn't ready to die. She didn't get much better, but the tiny, pale, sick, and squirming infant refused to die. Fussing day and night, weak and quiet, but furious, she took every last inch of that .037%. For the first two years of her life she had needles and tubes sticking out of her skin every few inches or so, scanners running her vitals and brain patterns constantly, projecting them on the screens that surrounded the little silvery pod she was kept in, with the inside glowing a burning fuchsia. Every day the pod infused her with the necessary elements and compounds to keep her alive and jolted her with minuscule electric currents to stimulate her muscles. It was painful, but it was all she knew, and so she stayed in the pod for two years before she made a single sound. It wasn't a babble, or a scream, or even a cry; it was a quiet, broken word. A Kraang word, and it meant release. It went largely unnoticed, gaining only a second of attention and no response. No response save for a small gasp from the mutated form of Jorge Koroko.

Jorge Koroko was a human, at one point at least. He had been raised first in in Japan, then in America by his mother's family, and he lived his life knowing that his father was scum from some vague European country, and his teenage mother died to bring him into this world. His grandfather loved his child more than anything in the world, and loved her child even more. Refusing to make the same, coddling mistake, Mr.Koroko was somewhat harsh on his grandson. He trained him every day in his own modified mix of martial arts for a decade and a half, despite his family's quiet disapproval. By the time his training was complete, Jorge was old enough to enlist in the army; one tour and he started medical school. Eleven years later and he was on his way to the airport to begin a third tour. It was on his way to the gate with a bag in one hand and cheap food in the other that he had his run in with the Kraang. The conflict, along with a faulty good luck bracelet his grandmother had weaved from bulls hair, lead to his mutation. In the following confusion, an eight foot tall, hulking bovine version of Jorge was ushered into a van and taken captive by the same aliens that would keep him for the next twenty-eight years. Only through good behavior and clever speaking did he become one of very few mutations they allowed to help in the many tasks that came with running the facilities, namely security and clean up. It just so happened that he ended up in the same facility that would splice Subject Venus-207.

Project Venus was one of many, many brainchildren conceived by Dr. Amanda Steele. After the successful splicing of their robotic gorillas, the Kraang gave Steele whatever tools she desired to continue a number of projects, with the understanding that said projects were to only be useful to the Kraang. Project Venus was Steele's pride and joy. The splicing of hundreds of species into various--human looking--young women to act as spies among the human population; sleeper agents, whose only purpose was to blend in and gather information until the Invasion. Then her daughters would wreak havoc, pulling any hiding citizens from their homes and reducing hundreds of years of human achievement to rubble. Unfortunately, due to dominance in various alien races genes, nearly five hundred of her seven hundred children did not make it past the second trimester. Another hundred appeared more amphibian than human, and could only be used and raised as sub-par warriors and slaves, whom the Kraang would not use, but sell to the highest bidding race. Of the remaining hundred, ninety-eight died at various stages of life of failing organs, and the ninety-ninth disappeared seven years later, along with Steele. The very last was 207, removed from her tank early after tangling herself in her substitute umbilical cord, and the only one left the Kraang had at their disposal. She was weak and useless, but experience had taught them better than to toss her away. Waste not, want not.

And so everyday, for a little over two years, Jorge Koroko watched Venus-207 grow in her tiny little pod. He would hear her heartbeat, far too quick and weak. He would listen to her breathe in her harsh and labored way. He would watch her writhe and fuss silently until her face went red and she was pumped with a mild sedative to relax her until her next fit. For two years he watched her grow and fight death. On her first birthday, he gave her a name.

He crouched low next to her tank, fainting cleaning up a spill of chemicals, and whispered, "Your name is Audrey now. You hear me? None of that Venus stuff. Audrey. She was a strong lady I met in service. Pretty too, like you."

He placed a hoof-knuckled hand on the pod and Audrey responded in kind with a heavy huff of filtered air.

"Good girl."

On her second birthday, he gave her freedom, or... at least freedom from the pod. He convinced the Kraang that he could train her. Koroko, as he had learned to do, spun the request into a favor; he could make her a weapon, he promised. For who, he never specified.

But then, they never asked.

For better or worse they agreed. Perhaps they were tired of waiting for her to die. Perhaps they believed him when he said he could make her a weapon. Maybe they just wanted to laugh at him, or whatever Kraang did to show amusement, as he tried to train the pathetic little red faced twerp. Whatever the reason, they gave him a small section of the facility, which included an old fire station and its underground connection to the main construct. They supplied him with whatever he asked so long as he could prove it had to do with her training and could not harm the facility. And then they moved her. When they removed her from the pod and placed her on the bed in the loft of the fire station, Jorge began to have doubts. She gasped and clutched her throat and whimpered when the tubes were removed. Her whole body was covered in small welts, and bruises bloomed like spring flowers everywhere she was touched. Her body was so tender, and the Kraang were not known for their gentle nature. Dark circles shadowed her eyes, which were half closed and bloodshot. The only thing that gave him hope was the fact that she was squirming, grunting here and there when a metallic hand clamped too tight, or a tube was yanked out too harsh. She laid, struggling, on the bed for a day before she started trying to get up. Koroko began to reach for her, but stopped. It was in that moment he decided he must stay detached. She would gain nothing from babying, and her survival was still not guaranteed. It was best for both of them if he remained a Master, and not a guardian… at least for now. At least until the fear that this was a mistake, one he would never come back from, subsided. So he leaned back into his chair and watched her struggle desperately to rise, the arms of the chair crunching under his grip. She managed only to roll onto her side. Jorge sighed and made a mental note to request mild steroid injections for her until he could build her strength up enough so that she would be at the physical level of a girl her age. Time in the pod had done her no favors, and she was far too weak. He fell asleep silently praying that she die quickly if she must, and listening to her huffing and rustling in the bed.

The next morning he would find her trying to climb back onto it.

Three years of training and Audrey still looked scrawny and ill, with dark circles under her eyes and pale skin stretched over near meatless bones. Koroko was forced to realize that she didn’t have the same benefits naturally made beings did. She didn’t know when she needed water, when she was hungry, when she needed to sleep; what he considered intense pain was a little more than a minor sensation to her, and fear was hard to provoke, leading to more than a few nasty scars. She was still showing heartbreaking symptoms of her faulty creation. Sickly pale skin, fits of choking and gasping, vomiting, and more. And yet, despite her tiny and helpless appearance, Audrey was strong. Or muscularly efficient, rather. Just five years old and underweight, yet her tests put her with athletic six year olds. This alone gave Koroko hope, enough to express his pride to an uninterested Kraang droid. ‘Like a calf, she is, running on those tiny little legs. Clumsy too, but strong.’

He worked her harder and changed her diet. Three hours of her day was devoted to eating as much as she could fit, twelve hours were spent fitfully sleeping, and every other second was spent working. She trained until she couldn't stand, and then she trained her mind. She worked on being in each moment, on being in tune with her surroundings and using them to her advantage. She learned about the Kraang computers and inventions, the earthly and alien creatures that made up her own DNA, and struggled horribly to learn about human literature, language, military history, chemistry and physics, mathematics, psychology, physiology. And then she got up again and did exercises until her muscles gave out and refused to move no matter how hard she willed them to work for her.

Koroko worked through her stubbornness and endless questions. She fought every step of every lesson and took severe punishment like treats, silently refusing any method but the one she found ideal. He taught her each new subject with wariness in how she would use it to find loopholes in the rules he had placed for her own safety, and found the more he pulled, the more she resisted. With time, he broke her code. She needed objectives and tools, not plans. So he pushed her to her limits, and pushed her past them. She learned to fight as she retreated, when the odds were against her, when it was too easy, or when it was too hard. She learned how to fight hard and how to fight stealthily and how to fight smart. She learned how to fight when the enemy couldn't be touched, or even seen. Kelli developed balance, power, speed, endurance. There was no mercy, no breaks, no rest that wasn't necessary. Jorge ground and pounded and drilled into her for years, over and over until she couldn't remember a time when she didn't fall into immediate stances, or swing perfectly without thinking about it. She didn't recall a time when she couldn't fight droids with her eyes closed and rely on hearing and muscle memory to win. He made her push her thresholds, her mental limits. He broke her down to rubble, and then made her build herself back up.

It didn't take very long before he found he couldn't break her down anymore.

And in time, Jorge discovered that even though she was made to be ruthless, she was kind, and thoughtful, determined, and loyal, if a little rough around the edges. Structure - Research

What is a structure - Is it a building or is it an object?

In the case of this project it is most definitely a building as opposed to a sculpture or object of art. It is there to do something.

When photographing structures such as buildings we are essentially capturing the work of an architect, the person who designed the building. To best represent the building in photography there are issues to consider and overcome. These range from the size of the building, accessibility, time of day for photographing – the position of the sun and shadows adjacent buildings affects everything.

One of the main issues in photographing buildings, and the bigger they are the harder it becomes, is perspective distortion. It is common to see photographs of buildings where the sharp straight lines of the building seem to converge into each other as the height increases. We can also see barrel distortion at the other end of the scale on many images where the building seems to bulge outwards.

To overcome perspective distortion, we can try and change the viewpoint we are shooting from. Changing the viewpoint can enhance the photograph as it may allow for a wider shot of the building, perhaps reducing the amount of distortion in the shot. It may also allow for less distractions in the background which detract from the overall finished image.

Wide Angle

By using a wide-angle lens, we can get more of the building in the photograph but these lenses come with their own set of issues in that they are likely to add the distortion we are trying to avoid to the image.

Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G – Wide Angle lens

In the use of wide-angle lens, it is important that we keep the camera sensor, or film if using, perpendicular to assist in reducing any distortion. Another way to perhaps combat distortion is to use an adjacent building which would allow access to take the shot from a different viewpoint, perhaps slightly elevated to mid-point.

Tilt Shift

Other lenses selections can be made and one that is generally considered invaluable in architecture photography is a tilt shift lens. These lenses allow the user to adjust composition, framing and viewpoint without having to tilt the camera either up or down and thereby greatly reduces, or eradicates, skewed verticals.

Large Format

In film photography for architecture it is possible to use a large format ‘bellows’ style camera which essentially has the same function as the tilt shift lens in that the camera does not move but the lens does.

Post Production

In modern day software, such as photoshop, it is possible to make some corrections to an image which has converging verticals or perspective distortions. Needless to say, by correcting the image then it is logical that part of the image is going to be cut off depending on what technique is used.

The easiest way to correct the distortion in photoshop is by using the lens correction filters coupled with the transform tools with the skew / distort and perspective tools being the most effective.

Due to using this process it is perhaps best to have some additional space around the edges of the frame when shooting to avoid cutting off the top or sides of the building when undertaking the corrections. This allows the whole building to remain in the frame and to correctly bring the convergence to a straighter angle.

The image below, whilst not the best image, represents the pulling outwards of the buildings edges and also represents what not to do in using an image that has no space around it so as to avoid cutting off the top, sides or bottom of the building.

For this the skew tool was used as demonstration although the perspective and distort tools can be used equally as well to assist.

The tools have the same ‘handles’ at the edges to assist pull, stretch, compress and distort the image to assist with correction.

Bracketing

It is often the case that more than a single shot is needed to capture a scene whether it be for the building or the surrounding area. This also includes the light as it may be different on various areas, some being in shadow and some being highlighted. The aim is to present a balanced image and one that is not over processed.

The easiest wat for this to be done is to take a series of shots, say 3 for example, at different apertures, one either side of the base shot, and blend them together to give one image displaying the full range of tones and light.

This can be done in post processing in photoshop and, providing the images are correctly shot and not over or under exposed by too much, a good composite of the images should be achieved that retains a natural look without displaying any of the HDR qualities so many poorer thought out images do.

Photographer Research

1. Neale Smith

Smith has been shooting architectural photography since 2006 and also specialises in interior photography. He aims to give his clients photographs that stands out with an emphasis on quality over quantity, taking great care to ensure he achieves what his client has requested.

In this shot the building is clearly the focal point of the image and great care has ben taken to ensure that the light from the sun is not too bright overhead and that it has an even spread over the entire building. Care has also been taken to ensure that the surrounding areas are relatively clear of distractions though there do remain a few distractions in the way of motor vehicles.

Being a hotel and on a public street it may not have been possible to have a completely clear street view regardless of the time of day. Perhaps a slightly tighter crop to lose the building on the right of the shot would help.

The most important thing in the photograph is that the building, not only being dead centre in the frame, has absolutely straight verticals at its edges and there is no obvious distortion.

This gives the viewer a clear indication of how the building actually looks in relation to its surroundings and that it has a clean, modern look with sharp lines.

2. Moby

Yes, it’s that Moby – he of dance music fame who is also a little less known as an architectural photographer.

Take near the home of Joni Mitchell these 2 photographs show off the stark reality of 1950s America in an abandoned air base. Whilst both are in monochrome, I feel that this works really well for these shots. It would have been nice to have had more detail in the sky on the top shot but, none the less, it does not detract from the strong leading lines and the very relevant 1950s telephone kiosk that would have been an integral part of any building of this type in those days.

The bottom photo is a classic interior shot that allows the viewer a glimpse into the functionality of the building. Sparsely furnished, as it would be at the time, due to it having being a military construction, the bright clean white of the interior gives the clinical feeling of the building and the purpose it was designed for.

Verticals are straight and there are definite leading lines on both photographs with nothing extraneous objects to detract from the viewers understanding or the meaning of the photographs.

3. Roland Halbe

Photographed in what looks like the early evening, Halbe has caputured some of the remaining light in the sky along with the beautifully lit building.

Although artificially lit, the building immediately stands out as a functional modern home. As with previous images, there are strong lead in lines and a definite function on view.

The lines on the building extremities are straight and sufficient surrounding has been included to give some relevance to the structure and space.

4. Cameron R Neilson

The buildings of New York City are notoriously difficult to photograph, let alone with enough space so as to allow straight edges and in context. In this photo Neilson has left in some of the adjacent buildings which give the main buildings some scale in terms of height.

There is some detail in the sky and some cloud reflection on one of the buildings which I do not think detracts from the building.

Knowing this location well from personal experience of visiting it over the last 20 years I am aware how difficult it is to avoid shadow from nearby buildings at any given time of the day, so tightly packed are those around it. Neilson has avoided this as best he can.

The verticals are exceptionally straight and, knowing the height of these buildings, it is quite a feat to have captured this so well.

5. Keith Hunter Photography

The Scottish Crime Campus, Gartcosh is a stunning contemporary building in the heart of rural Lanarkshire and features a double helix roof symbolising the DNA strand that focuses much of the work that goes on in the building.

Having spent some time in this building in a previous working life I was aware of the sleek, tall structure and the exterior designs on the stone and metal work.

At first look it would be easy to mistake this building for a sculpture until you realise there is a road running around the perimeter, doors on the sides and large windows all along the verticals on the right-hand side.

Designed to look modern and attractive but also to keep people out, the building could be described as being at cross-purpose with itself.

In this photo we see plenty of detail in the sky and the angle of view accentuates the height of the building along with imparting just how imposing it is in relation to the expanse of space around it.

With just a little shadow from a smaller nearby building showing at the lower left of the image, the building is drenched in sunshine which shows of the beauty of the construction very well indeed.

Like all the photos in this document, the verticals are very straight and allow the building to be viewed as it should be, standing tall and completely upright.

SELECTED BUILDING

For this project I intend to shoot the City of Glasgow College building. It is modern in construction and is large enough to allow interesting features to be documented in a full building shot from a single aspect. It is constructed in such a manner that there is easy access to allow such a wide full building shot and that the daylight will ensure an even tonality of light depending on the time of day the shoot take place.

There is also sufficient detail on the exterior to allow a closer detail shot of the structure.

Internally the building affords several opportunities to obtain good shots which detail the function and purpose of the building.

As of 13th March 2019 I have not yet selected a date for shooting and need to monitor the direction and times of the sunlight and choose the best time of day to shoot. I also need to select a day when the weather and light are both favourable to shoot.

Reconnaissance

I am familiar with the location and layout of the building and also with the direction the sun rises and falls and how it will be likely to affect the lighting on the building at given times of the day.

In the morning the sun rises in the East which affects that aspect of the building first, causing better lighting earlier on either just at, or shortly after, the dawn. Conversely in the evening it sets in the west and affects that aspect at the appropriate times.

I have made notes of the times for both sunrise and sunset and await a day of good weather and where important family commitments allow me to shoot this building exterior.

My current proposed date, weather dependent, is Saturday 30th March 2019.

Risk Assessment

Whilst the brief does not make any comment about a risk assessment, it is prudent to have one. On my trips to the building I have become aware of the dangers of the surrounding traffic and the various trip hazards such as bollards and sharp drops down bankings that can affect the shoot. I am also aware of the ongoing works at the external west facing exterior of the building which is fenced off.

On the day of the shoot I will undertake a further risk assessment prior to shooting to ensure it is safe to do so.

An internal risk assessment will be carried out when I select the areas inside the building that I intend to photograph although this is likely to be either the atrium looking up the main staircase area. This provides for a good interior view of the first thing people see when they enter the building.

Other options include the triangular intersections on the library floors which also Gove good viewpoints and allow the viewer an overview of the building interior.
