This mood-board was created by Ysa, these were images from the designers Kristine Bostro, Veldon Salim and Fancy.club who were featured on WGSN under our trend 'Serene Futurism'. I think the images she chose communicate what sort of feel we want our brand to have, the designers have very different shapes yet similar style, colour palette and material choice. Looking into some of these designers gave us more inspiration on how our designs and brand as a whole could turn out so think this mood-board really helped that.

My top 4 designs -

Design 1)

This design is what my group decided would be best for the final 3 designs, I think it captures all the aspects of our brands meaning through the outfit. It represents femininity, layering and asymmetry something that was key part of the 'Serene Futurism' trend. I also got inspiration from the designer Veldon Salim, who I researched earlier on in the module, made such an impact through layering his clothing. I chose a base colour of soft purple to go underneath on the flowing trousers and asymmetric vest which I think compliments the more detailed pattern on top. The flowing long sleeve top I created had circular cut outs on either shoulder and one subtly under the arm, I felt this looked perfect on top of the vest wit the more detailed pattern. I also added a drape on top of the trousers to keep up with the layering, I felt this added some movement to the clothing, highlighting the lightness of the material too. Over all I was very happy with this design, the trousers made it different in comparison to the repeat of skirts and dresses from my previous designs, I think it's my favourite out of all of them.

Design 2)

This design was a dress that had a mixture of layered materials sewn together in different directions, I wanted to design a dress that flows/drapes down the leg of the model, it has a mixture of two pastel patterns across it with pops of vibrant colour, the middle material was meant to be a mesh, light pastel blue colour. I also added frills across each seam for some further embellishments in the same shade of blue to match the mesh.

Design 3)

This design was one I loved but also disliked, the top with the cut outs really looked how I wanted it to turn out, I added a ruched effect to the top too with tied string which could be adjustable for the person wearing it. What I didn't like about this was the large space between the top and the skirt, this may be suitable for a younger audience (18-25) but more mature customers may not want to show as much skin on those areas of their bodies which as a brand we need to be mindful of. I didn't like the skirt as much as I did the top simply because when looking back, I could have created a nicer, more flattering shape however I liked the cut out around the hip.

Design 4)

This was my last final design, I liked how this turned out, however I think it was a bit revealing for our customers age group. I think the corset-like top was a nice shape, the cut outs on the sides give the illusion of a pulled in waist. For the pattern I used the pattern by Erin, paired with a pastel purple, ruched skirt that flows down, the ruched centre creates a lovely shape for the customer which could also be made to be adjustable. Think this was a nice design but overall may not work for our mature customers.

Veldon Salim Research -

I researched designer Veldon Salim, who’s 24 years old and grew up in the capital of Indonesia who studied at Central St Martin’s.

For his final collection, he used a diverse range of mixed natural and synthetic yarns from mohairs, various wools, monofilament, nylon, and more specifically collaborated with ceramic students to create undergarments and accessories. He says his ‘creative concept is based on his personal experience of abuse and feelings of detachment from his body’ which I think shows fashion can have such a deeper emotional meaning to it than what initially meets the eye. The delicate nature of his materials empathise the sensations of knitted textile; exploring the sensual experience of wearing a garment rather than its external posture.

I discovered Salim on WGSN and fell in love with his unique layered garments…I think it’s so visually appealing seeing these soft, thin fabrics layered on top of one and other, something very unique and not something you see on your day to day basis. The pastel shades are soft on the eye, something I could use on my designs and work with our textiles designer Erin who will create patterns for our designs. I want to incorporate the same colour palette and layered technique in my designs for our brand. I think this will add made our brand more unique and interesting from your average brand.
