State of The Starry Path Hotel #4 (March 1st 2024)

Hello! Welcome to the fourth installment of the State of The Starry Path and the first one in March! I thought about doing a monthly wrap up but considering I didn’t get much done in February, I decided against it. OKAY NOW ONTO THE UPDATE!

Mini Life Update

It feels like I have so little time these days. I needed to help do some fixes for the main assignments of my capstone project so that took up most of my time and energy for the first part of the week. Then I was focused on assignments for my other classes for the rest of the week and before I knew it, it was Friday again. Man, I wish I had more time in general.

On the bright side, I will be on break for next week! I can finally relax and take some time for myself. While I will need to do some school related things during my break, the fact that I do not need to go to class means I can focus on relaxing, playing video games, and content creation of course!

Content Creation Progress Update

So I ended up not really thinking about content creation at all this week. I feel terrible about it but what can I do besides move forward? Thankfully, I will be off of school for the following week so I can get some work done on YouTube videos.

This Week’s Goals

Make an ideas list and write down a minimum of 5 ideas: This goal is a holdover from last week but since I will not be in school, I will have more time to devote to it this week.

Choose 1 idea and start a video script for it: Once I finish writing down some ideas, I’m going to choose one and start writing a script for it. Unfortunately I won’t be able to record any audio or gameplay because I won’t have my main PC with me, but

Research editing software: I’m going to look for a free or low cost editing software that I can use to make videos. Even though I won’t be able to test it while on my break, I can still install it when I come back to my PC.

This Month’s Goals

Make one YouTube video: I want to make a Youtube video this month even if it’s terrible. The majority of the weekly goals are going to be focused on this for the month.

This Year’s Goals

Get monetized on YouTube: I want to eventually make money off of my content so I’m hoping to get monetized on YouTube this year. This is going to be a tall order, but I hope I can keep working towards this with my weekly and monthly goals!

Become an Affiliate on Twitch: Despite making Twitch less of a priority, I still want to be able to become an affiliate on Twitch. While I do need to find a way to meet the seven days streaming requirement, I want to be able to draw in viewers first.

Gain 100 followers on any social media besides YouTube or Twitch: I actually am over halfway to 100 followers on Twitter as of writing this, but I still don’t get a ton of engagement on my post. In addition, most of the followers I have gotten are those annoying GFX bots and it’s a little bit disheartening. I also want to build up a following on Tumblr and Bluesky as well!

Make a community Discord server: Once I build up a community, I want to create a Discord server for people to hang out in. However, I want to wait until there is a demand for a Discord server. This goal is lower priority compared to the other goals but I hope that this does end up happening this year!

Final Thoughts

I can’t wait to be able to relax and not have to think about school all the time this week. Hopefully this month I can hit the ground running and actually be able to finish the goals I set out for myself this week. Also I do want to make an announcement regarding streams for the next couple of weeks. I will not be streaming tomorrow or next Saturday. Since I am planning on going back to my parent’s house, I will need to spend tomorrow preparing for the drive there and then the following Saturday is when I’m planning on coming back, so I do not want to pressure myself to get back in time for a stream. My next stream will be on Saturday March 16th at 2 PM EST. However, I will make sure to write a blog post for next week! Anyway, I hope your stay was bright and your journey is filled with light!

Completed - Dragon Warrior II (Dragon Quest 2)

Oh, you naughty, naughty little game.

For the same reasons that people re-read ancient literature or watch silent-era movies, I recently played "Dragon Warrior" for the first time. It was a little bit of a drag at times, but I got through it within a week, so hey. Considering how most modern-day RPGs won't let you off the hook for a month (or, like, ever), it was an easy sacrifice of time. I don't have much going on at home this month, so I figured, what the hell. I've got Dragon Warriors 2 and 4 around. I can probably get another one knocked out of the way.

Why don't I have 3? Err…doesn't seem appealing to me. (Not exactly in a rush to play Ultima games, either.)

"Dragon Warrior 2" was a bit of a mystery to me. Like, its predecessor? All over Twitch, whether in vanilla classic editions or in randomizers. There's just not as much groundswell for this game. Which, hey. Hard to beat an original release unless you're Valve or something. But, from an external view, it seems like "Dragon Warrior 2" should be more popular than it is. It definitely has more features than its predecessor, at any rate. So, what gives?

Babe, I can now tell what gives.

"Dragon Warrior 2" happens several generations past the first" Dragon Warrior" game. Having successfully conquered nearby territories and sired offspring, it seems that all is going well for the descendants of Erdrick. Unfortunately, peace doesn't last. (Or, frankly, ever.) The neighboring warlock Hargon decides to take up my political theory from the last game and murders the King of Moonbrooke, sending the whole region into chaos. To stop him, the descendants of Erdrick's lineage decide to band together once again to push back the forces of darkness. Ya know. When they can find each other.

This game has some significant system improvements from its predecessor. First, it has normalized fighting screens into the same first-person, black background set-up that became ubiquitous for this era. It also contains multiple party members with different strengths and responsibilities. Consolidations have been made to menuing and item mechanics from the first game, so now you don't have to deal with torches or menu-selecting to use stairs. The music was composed better as well (although, again, I ended up muting it and listening to videos online.) The game's map is also vast, and there are a significant number of challenges for the player to overcome. That last sentence is also very, very loaded and should be your indicator for why I eventually snapped and went grind-crazy for five out of the fourteen days that I played this game.

While this game is further up the evolutionary scale of RPGs, it's still very much an archaeopteryx. It's inching closer to what is thriving in other successful RPGs, but it's just not quite there yet. Like, yes, you have multiple party members. They both start at level 1, and their level caps are all unique and lower than the main hero. Yes, some have magic, and some don't. The magic isn't reliable, and some of it can be outclassed by usable items (more on that in a bit.) Want a certain party command order? Think that your agility stat will guarantee certain initiative in combat? Well, aren't you cute? Death remains a problem. Wiping out still costs a lot of money to recover from. More than that, variable size limitations get in the way of your progress. You want two of those Mink Coats worth 65000? Sorry, dude. You can only carry 65535 gold, so you've gotta get them one at a time. Here's hoping you don't wipe out against an enemy set with instakill or MP stealing abilities.

There are several points in this game where a player can easily go off the rails. Initially, it's just trying to pick up your second party member. You get bounced back and forth between dungeons and castles just to find the dude chilling in a hotel at a midpoint town. Then, finding your third party member requires locating a magic mirror and using it on a random animal in a nearby town (which is surrounded by poisonous creatures, too. Also, I think Hargon may have called the Princess of Moonbrooke a bitch with the trick he pulled? What an assclown.) Then, it's trying to figure out how to use a cloak on a tower to land on the opposite side of a river. THEN, it's getting a boat and figuring out where in the goddamn hell to go next (although, it makes sense, if you HAVE A MAP IN REAL LIFE NOT IN THE GAME BECAUSE FUCK THE PLAYER.) THEN, it's getting through THE FUCKING LIGHTHOUSE and FINDING FUCKING CRESTS and THE FUCKING CAVE with DRAGONS and HIDDEN TRAP DOORS and then hitting the snowy mountain with ENEMIES THAT ALL INSTAKLL YOUR PARTY and are CONSTANTLY KILLING THE ONE DUDE WITH THE REVIVE SPELL that only learns it at LEVEL 25 which is like THE END OF THE FUCKING GAME. And then, you try to look at source materials, only to find the MANUAL IS SHIT and the support guide SKIPS A CREST. And then GAMEFAQS IS FULL OF SHIT because the game had a REMAKE where they CHANGED TOWN NAMES AND TREASURE LOCATIONS so you have to WADE THROUGH SEVERAL ITERATIONS OF UNSORTED GARBAGE TO FIND WHAT YOU NEED. And, hell. Did I mention that the ENCOUNTER RATE IS JACKED UP and THE REPEL SPELL DOESN'T BOOT MOST ENCOUNTERS and KEY ITEMS TAKE UP INVENTORY SPACE and SHIT IS ROUTINELY HIDDEN IN WEIRD WALL GAPS?!

So, yes. I had to punish it. That's why I maxed the absolute hell out of my characters and one-shot the final dungeon. I too can be a petty bitch.

This is not a game that plays fair. It's built to last people a long time, and it does so by being hard and obtuse. It's honestly one of those games where a lot of kids would have given up on it, especially if they didn't have access to friends or supplementary guides. Like, the other two files on my copy dropped out at levels 27 and 21, respectively. (You're expected to end the game around level 35 for the main character, according to one publication.)

Now, the good thing is that the NES version of this game has some significant and well-known bugs that make it much easier to complete. The first involved beating up an Evil Clown that the main character's dad has locked in the castle basement (which what the hell), selling his dropped Thunder Staff, sleeping and saving in said castle, resetting the NES, and repeating the battle-sell-save-reset cycle until max money is acquired (at which point you can leave, buy what you want, come back, and return to the clown clobbering cycle. Assuming you don't leave the palace with the staff, of course.) The second involves regenerating cloak-making items so that you end up with a Water Flying Cloth for both the Prince of Caddock and Princess of Moonbrooke. That one's a bit obtuse, and I screwed up doing it, but it's interesting to note that even one of the published materials I used even brought that up.

Another detail that helps is using the Item command on special items to draw out unique abilities. In particular, using Item on the Thunder Staff and Shield of Strength grants you access to free Infernos and Healmore spells whenever you'd like. This significantly reduces the game difficulty, as well as frees up MP for other spells (or grants personal healing for the non-magic using hero.) Again, it requires a lot of money to do, but it's well worth it.

If you're feeling extra patient, you can even watch a speedrun or two. And if you look at the times for that game and think, "Shit, I don't have the time for this!", then maybe this isn't the game for you.

"Dragon Warrior II" is a mean, spiteful little bastard of a game. I'm not saying it's impossible to beat it—or, hell, to spank as badly as I did in the end—but it does require a lot of grit to get through. A lot of mutual abuse went down between the game and I, but to me, it was worth having that experience. And, hell. There's no point in buying old games if you don't work them over, from time to time.

Especially not if they're, like, $70.00 on the used market. Cripes.

I hope you dont mind me giving my little story but, I found Okami through this really old playstation 2 demo disc I used to play over and over for YEARS when I was little because I didn’t have the money for anything but 1 pokemon game a year. After awhile I just forgot about it, but was reminded by a few tumblr posts a couple of years ago! I really wanted to play it but was boohoo sad because I didn’t own anything to play it on…

lmao a few days ago I found out its on the switch and I just missed a sale so now I’m stuck between buying it at full price or waiting for another sale. your posts are convincing me to buy it now

i mean full price is like $20 right? maybe some people are harder up for cash but as far as video games go that’s pretty dang reasonable. it’s got far more to it than some recent triple a company releases priced at $60 smh. it is absolutely more than worth what it costs

also as for playing it over and over again LOLLLL ok i can relate i don’t own that many video games i never have so i’m the kind of person who’ll just sink hundreds of hours into the same game and become utterly obsessed with it. that’s the best way to live imo instead of liking a million different things but only casually

i certainly hope my insane posting can help encourage people to get into things! it’s my favorite feeling when i play a part in spreading love and joy to others via media i like so if you do get okami hd for the switch that would be wonderful (clearly i don’t need to sell you on the game’s quality if you’ve already played it a thousand times lol)

Short play 82 Days Later: Crazy Money, Fallen People

Hengdian left a deep impression on Ma Chenggang that day. Props and equipment were everywhere, the headlights were shining brightly, and "everyone was working hard." In fact, Ma Chenggang did catch up with the hottest period of short dramas in Hengdian. 2. A dangerous game

For some true insiders, skits are like a whirlpool, beautiful at first, but with an undercurrent as you go inside.

Xi'an Fengxing Culture, which produced "Wushuang", was also one of the first companies in Xi'an to shoot mini-program dramas. The person in charge, Li Tao, told 36Kr that according to his observation, domestic mini-program short dramas have gone through three iterations. The first time is in mid-2022, when small program short dramas begin to align with the film and television industry, and a split-account model is introduced instead of the past production fee buyout. In other words, producers can get incentives from the box office. The second time was after March 2023. A round of supervision on short dramas had just ended, and a large number of people in the film and television industry began to enter mini program short dramas. The third time, in August of the same year, after "Wushuang" became popular, because of the myth of "100 million in eight days", people outside the industry began to really pay attention to the opportunity of short dramas.

But when film and television people started to get involved, they found that the gameplay of the game had already been locked. "Mini program dramas are different from ordinary video websites. They have no natural traffic and no user loyalty. Almost everyone consumes impulsively. The streaming company has the power to decide whether you can be seen or not." Short drama production Filmmaker Chen Wen said.

Before payment is realized, there will be three roles in the chain of a small program drama: the short drama company that owns the copyright, the distributor responsible for streaming and selling the drama, and the platform with large traffic. Among them, the relationship between the first two is quite deep, and powerful players will merge these two roles. Leading short drama companies such as Jiuzhou, Dianzhong, and Capacity are typical examples.

Whoever is closer to the money has the absolute right to speak. The only ones in this chain that are guaranteed to make money without losing money are the traffic-rich platforms like Douyin and Tencent. “For a short play, 90% of the box office revenue is spent on casting.” Li Tao, head of Fengxing Culture, told 36Kr. In other words, the short drama company and the investors will share the remaining 10%.

The investment is the most important and secretive part of determining this 10%. It directly determines whether the final income is tens of thousands or tens of millions.

For a casting company, what exactly determines the casting value of a short drama?

ROI, return on investment, is the most accurate and efficient data rule. Many industry insiders confirmed to 36Kr that deciding whether a company should continue to invest depends on ROI.

Wang Han, the founder of the short drama company, has been exposed to the streaming business before. According to his observation, streaming has high requirements for positive feedback. He first tests the water at a small cost, and then gradually increases investment based on the data. For an investment account, if the ROI is lower than 90%, it will enter the status of maintaining an account. It will be observed for a while. If the ROI is lower than 70%, then the account will be completely abandoned.

When the ROI is greater than 110%, that is, the box office of a short drama can bring at least a 10% return rate, the pitcher will continue to invest. "The greater the return, the greater the investment, the higher the return, and so on. As long as one of the ten dramas is a hit, the investment company can make high profits." Li Tao said.

This is a mobile hunt, just like wild beasts in the jungle that never directly hunt the prey in front of them. The three most common things they do are observation, calculation and dormancy.

"So if a short drama does not bring good returns to the streaming company within three days, or even the next day in some cases, the streaming company will not have the patience to continue paying traffic costs for you." Chen Wen said.

Once this happens, the short drama producers will be left with nothing to gain. He still remembered that a friend of his used to run a photographic equipment company. In the second half of 2023, he started making his own short dramas and invested hundreds of thousands. He was full of confidence at the beginning, but after a week of broadcasting, he finally received only 80 yuan in share.

During this week, the producer received only a simple excel sheet to find out how much the box office revenue of a mini program short drama was - it only briefly recorded the name of the short drama and a few box office figures. As for data input, sources and algorithms, everything is hidden.

"Asking is a core secret. We can't see the box office data at all." Chen Wen said.

Under the premise that the streaming company has control over traffic costs and data and has a huge say, the producer has become the one with the greatest risk. "We have to bear all the production costs in the early stage, and the income depends on the box office results. The results all depend on the streaming data." Chen Wen said.

He told 36Kr that from the end of 2022 to the present, he has participated in the production of 5 mini program short dramas and has lost millions of yuan so far. “I have stayed in so many post-processing rooms and talked with all the production companies. , this year we have lost all our money."

In the huge traffic pool, from delivery, capture to realization, the interests of each other are also nested layer by layer.

A small program short drama advertisement, from distribution to user end, only relies on a distribution company is not enough.
