How I Made a Music Video in my Living Room
youtube
No money, no friends who want to be on camera, and an idea that I know will blow.
Problems, meet solutions.
Stargazing is a 2022 song by Atlanta Afrobeats artist Apollo Omenka. Upon first hearing the song a tale of lovers separated by a wartime draft came to me and was quickly placed in my notes app until the future, which is now.
First things first, was the shotlist. My process is very fluid. I walk around and talk to myself when brainstorming and will either write stuff in my notes app, or on physical sticky notes. Thanks for this tip, Mom.
For Stargazing, I knew parts of the idea in my head and made great care to write those pieces down for when I was going to eventually execute. When I was ready to begin production and make the shotlist, I had planned to have a session later in the evening to write it out, but the idea was really fresh in my head earlier in the day, so I quickly grabbed my camera and started reciting out the shots I saw in my head as well I could for my future self to jot them down.
Having a quick and broken up format to describe my story was very helpful when on set and having to snipe out each scene. Organization is key to not losing your mind when making films. The best thing you can do for yourself is know it will be made and believe that shit. The second best thing you can do is be prepared.
I’ve provided a free shotlist template, as well as a slightly modified copy of the shotlist I used at the link below.
With a fun and relatively descriptive shotlist, we move into storyboarding.
Storyboarding is going to change your life. I’ve heard old niggas talk about the importance of storyboarding my entire time liking this film shit, and while I love to draw, the daunting process of drawing out my entire film made me sick. It’s as though I’m making my film twice- the exact benefit of doing them. This point was best illustrated to me by a video Kent Lamb did on Standard Story Company’s site, regarding animatics: https://youtu.be/Diu_Gj7p_50?t=357
“Who wouldn’t want the chance to see their movie before they make their movie?...It’s the director’s job to be the most well prepared person on set. How can you be anymore prepared, than if you’ve already made your film before you even showed up on set?” (Lamb).
Your form doesn’t need to be at a master’s level to get out the general location you want each actor or item in the shot. You could use squares saying what they are supposed to be, or perfect sharpie renders of each actor, the choice is yours. You simply just need to know where the important parts of the frame are and should be. I used two dedicated days and 55 sticky notes to create the storyboard for Stargazing. I already knew how I wanted to approach shooting, so the conclusion of storyboarding quickly transitioned into planning.
A snag I knew I would run into was filming myself and the other actor in the video, my wonderful girlfriend, Sonya. Through a chance encounter, I met a photographer at an event and enlisted his help in the shoot. Sending him, my shotlist, storyboards, and inspirations I prepared for the shoot day.
I drew lighting diagrams based on tests I had run a few days in advance to follow on the day. I used two Neewer 660 colored lighting panels. I used umbrella diffusion on one, and let the other shine raw, primarily using the diffused one as my main light for the subjects, with the raw light acting primarily as a backlight in most of my setups. This is the page from my notebook with the diagrams I used on set, primarily noting the color temp that I was going to use. I likely kept my intensity percentage consistent, a little under 30%. I was mostly concerned with matching the warmth of the backgrounds as much as I could.
Tumblr media
The backgrounds for the shoot were generated using Midjourney AI. The application exists in a discord server, allowing a user to enter a prompt that the AI, using a database of reference, will build into an image. Following my multi day experiment turned existential crisis using it, I saw potential in its use to generate backgrounds, initially, for animated projects. I would come across a video from Film Riot making me realize I could take it a step further. The video, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtzrU-6-Y0Y) served as a heavy inspiration for my shooting process going forward. Iterate through backgrounds I would need based on my shotlist and storyboards, and prepare to light my scenes to match. I’ll likely do a deeper dive into Midjourney over time, but I recommend it highly. My only caveat will be to remember that as a computer, it will be limited by what you feed it and what you expect to be given from it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shoot day was fun, my only advice simply to be as prepared as you can. The difference between this shoot and others I’ve done is that I finally organized my process from ground floor to the day of, allowing me to simply cross each shot off the list. The passionate artful fun is only eased through not having to think of all the rigid logistics. Things will always go awry when making films, but if you have a plan, confidence, and flexibility- then you’ll be just fine.
Next week I’m going to break down how I edited the video, including compositing and file organization. In the meantime, feel free to watch the final video here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=478jMjOjN5Y).
Thanks for having a look in and I’ll see you soon.

Journal #2 01/20/2019
Approach
For this weeks journal, a couple things occurred; We began developing ideas for out memory short with a reference sheet, technical analysis of how we are to use light, and a storyboard which shows how the camera and use of light were to be used in the story. But that’s just part of what happen this week. I had a talk with Professor Palazzi about some ideas for a potential thesis topic. Unfortunately, it didn’t go as well as I planned, and to be honest, I agreed with most of what she told me. I’ll be completely honest, I didn’t know exactly what a thesis is, but my thought of it was building on an ongoing topic with to create more discussion. I had a talk with Zach Winegardner about his thesis topic. He stated his topic was a way to allow the audience to view works of art in a more complex way though digital exploration. He also stated he had struggles his second year with finding a topic and through that, he lost focus his love for what he was doing. He didn’t know exactly what his professors wanted from him, and that’s where I’m at in regard to the topic. Hearing that from him made me feel better because I’m not the only one going through it, or have gone through it. As for the animation itself, the story of the film has been an idea I’ve had in mind before I started the program, it’s how I’m coming about the film that has changed (integrating 3D animation with 2D animation). However I knew this would occur, as I stated in my statement of intent, I wanted to learn more about 3D animation. I guess for now, I want to experiment a bit more and strengthen my skills in 3D software and re-evaluate some of my decisions in approaching my work so I may find that love for animation again.
In regard to that, this kind of set my approach for this week and my thinking. For the beginning of the week, two things occurred; I began progressing my 3D modeling skills in 3D animation class with Mr. Steve Conroy. We are creating a face and upper body model. However, I decided to create a whole body instead. Why? To challenge myself and figure out how to solve questions about Maya without constantly asking my classmates all the time (sometimes I feel I’m letting them do the work for me when I ask them questions, but they say otherwise). Saturday I came into Accad and worked on modeling and ended up almost finishing the leg, without assistance from anyone, so hopefully when I rig it, it won’t have too many problems. Here are images of what the upper body should look like by the time I’m done in comparison wot what I have right now:

MY PROGRESS
Relevant Sources or Inspirations
Going Back to 6400 we develop a reference sheet and a storyboard for the memory short we are developing in class. For the reference sheet, We chose three images that would set as a base for the lighting, color, camera and temperature of that scene of the short. Here are my three images and why I chose them:
Tumblr media
I chose this images as a reference for my first sequence because of the lighting and color
scheme. It relates to me memory because it reminds me of times where I would look outside my window and see the gloomy sky with a mix of the grey spectrum and the natural light of my room would be a somewhat jaded feeling. This lighting would be considered a low-key lighting in the room because it has low intensity in comparison to the outside lighting and the temperature is a cooler. A high-key and somewhat soft key-lighting for the outside because the intensity in contrast to the inside of the room is much brighter but the temperature still gives off a cool feeling. The direction of the light is above the windows but most of the direction of the light is aimed at the table and a little bit of the floor in front of the floor.

I chose this images as a reference to the second part of my sequence because of the intensity of the light after the rain has been lifted from the storm. It is high and low-key lighting because of the light beaming through one part of the window and most parts inside the room are a bit darker with less definition if it was direct lighting. The temperature for the image is warm and the direction of the light is an eye-level view.

I chose this as the image for the reference to the third part of the sequence because of its’ angle and color scheme. The intensity of the lighting is high from the point of the sun and on the blinds reflecting the light from the sun. This would be a mix of high, low and soft-key lighting because of the contrast between the light on the outside of the window and it almost being black on the inside of the window. The temperature is warm with a bit of cool around the water and a bit inside the room. The direction of the light is also eye-level.
Choices Made
Based on those images, I created a rough storyboard sketch of how I plan to animate the scene. I kept it on the gray scale to focus on the light aspect of the short since the main focus of the project is light. Each frame represents the time of day and where the light is because of the contrast in shadows around the room and the light outside the window. I also have a sun dial which shows where the light will be in the short:
Tumblr media
After creating the storyboard, I created a timeline of where I am and what I plan to do in regard to the steps I will will take in creating this short film film. Here is my technical plan for the next 4 weeks or so:
Likely Next Steps
Experiential Storytelling: Technical Plan
Week
What to do?
Process
Week 1
Create idea for story
Writing poems stating the memory dealing with light:
Complete
Week 2
Create Animatic sequence based on storyboard and poem ideas
Drawing out images based on references used (includes photos, sketches, stories, etc.). After, begin drafting animation after the animatic. This is not the final work. Creating more than one ideation will help determine what I’m looking for.
Week 3
Drafting animation using applications such as TvPaint, Photoshop, and Maya
Maya is not my strong point, however, creating a multi-layered video of the 2D animation in a 3D space would be doable, but a good challenge for myself. For animating the 2D part, I want to create multiple layers; one layer would stand still, while the others stay in motion behind the static layer.
Week 4
Begin cleaning the final draft of the 2D animation. Begin fixing up the 3D animation a bit (color, texture, etc.)
While cleaning the animation, I will begin adding sound effects (rough most likely) to get a sense of how sound will enhance the film. To add music or not?
Week 5
Finish final touchups. Add into premiere or after effects
Making sure the sound and video are in proper order with no issues. Render out. Test, test, test.
I began creating an animatic for the short, though I will make some adjustments to the animatic this coming week and begin production on the short as well:
ANIMATIC
For the upcoming week, I plan to continue developing the look for the short film, including the animatic with camera shots, lighting and color and make sure the timing of my voice matches up with the feel of the film, so I might have to re-record my voice this week. I plan to go into Accad before the start of the week and work on the 3D modeling for the 3D animation class so I may understand more concepts to help with 6400 if needed. I will also continue to experiment and re-evaluate my situation with my thesis topic, as well as the animation so I won’t feel behind on my work again.

What the In-Crowd Won't Tell You About What Is Animatic
All About What Is Animatic
International Rendering Styles permit you to alter the general design of your animations quickly. The basics continue to be the same. The techniques taught within this training video assume you have basic knowledge of employing the 3D modeling program Rhino.
The discipline of 3D creation is extremely broad, so you ought to learn various niches like games and video. Lots of folks are watching out for the optimal/optimally animation software that suits their budget. In case you are not certain how far you wish to go with animation, many businesses offer the choice to upgrade if you outgrow the beginner computer software.
Jim and I'll give notes. Of course, some Directors are going to have preferred storyboard artist that they will use over and over.
In some instances, there weren't any CG references. Sometimes, you will see that you wish to cut some dialogue or change it. As a consequence, different directors or artists boarding the same script might vary wildly. Putting in a transition between scenes is easy. They can have the story.
If you think God didn't require a creator, then you think nothing created your god. The human mind should conceptually finish a perceived action. Also, there are lots of unique strategies to achieve that.
Never the less, I'm sure plenty of people will realize that it is a particularly handy tool. There's a particular position held using a manufacturing guy named Peter Gave,'' says Escobar. The attached infographic is a far easier approach to grasping the idea.
What Is Animatic Secrets
Storyboards are a critical part of the pre-visualization procedure, together with being a significant tool for pre-production and on the set. Nevertheless, the emotional decisions are a lot more essential to comprehend and permitted to flourish. Storyboards Storyboarding is a critical part of the preproduction approach. It is produced with strategy. Having gone via the procedure before, they wanted a tool which would generate the process more straightforward and organized. This was the most difficult region of the approach.
When facing a brief time-frame to come up with an undertaking, some designers have a tendency to cut some areas of the process so that they can begin animating it as sooner as possible. You may use the neighborhood library, the net along with your bookshelf for reference. I spent a very long time searching the net and honestly did not locate a good example.
What Is Animatic
These storyboards obtain their name as their rough sketches not larger than a thumbnail. This is a beneficial tool if you prefer to morph images. But I had to learn how to use the Cintiq's capabilities.
One other great feature is the way it can export in an assortment of unique formats including PDF, image files, and many distinct movie formats. On the opposite hand, as an advanced user, you can need a detailed set of characteristics that offer you a high level of control over your animation work. You may change this selection at any time working with the nation selector at the base of the web page. GUARANTEED This merchandise is new, in-stock and prepared to ship.
Making animations appear natural needs a basic grasp of the essentials of physics. Amazing commercials are created with a whole lot of economy, discipline and smart choices. Knowledge is not difficult to measure, thus simple to deal with and judge gifted children from dumb children.
We're always searching for techniques to exploit those ideas. And if you're a teenager reading this with no charge card, then you can try out the free alternative, just bear in mind this will mean more investment of your time. A terrific story resonates with an audience regardless of what medium it's in.
Any visual results or paint effects might be included. Storyboard is that portion of the process once we bring the ideas we've got into something visual. It almost enjoys a moving storyboard.
New Step by Step Roadmap for What Is Animatic
Again it truly is contingent on the undertaking, but the animation, sound, and editing. After you determine what to animate, you have to decide how you wish to create your animations. You can now create lifelike animations easily!
Poser delivers the ability of interactive 3. The pencil is designed to be a very simple program enabling everyone to learn 2D animation.
It's full of storyboard-like-comics that are as hilarious since they are beautiful. It is possible only to draw exactly what you know. It is not important whatsoever. Before I continue, allow me to digress.
A History of What Is Animatic Refuted
His Youtube channel will be worth checking out here. It is dependent upon your personal preference. No, we don't allow local pickups. I can complete it in very little time, at a very low cost, with very little friction, before doing any manufacturing work. The producers utilize the animatic to ensure the performances, and comedic timing do the job.
What Is Animatic: the Ultimate Convenience!
Additionally, the web makes gathering reference material so much easier and quicker. With even a few boards, you can begin to visit a scene working. The idea behind Animatic storyboards is they simplify the info, and also can give a bit of fun and light entertainment when you're trying to receive your point across.
It's often wise to have learned on cutting edge technology, so you have the ability to discover the best paying job straight away. It's possible for you to copy and pasteboards, which is a simple approach to reuse shots and become tiny changes. Although fast connections are available almost everywhere, individuals wish to watch much better content, whether they have to wait download time.
You should find out whether you can test each program initially to see exactly what you like. You will begin to feel the design. In the advertising business, animatics are utilized to test television commercials until they go into full-up production.
