Two tarot for the price of one! Ardyn and Ifrit as the Devil (of course) and Aranea and Garuda as the six of swords. More about these choices beneath the cut:

So first, Ardyn. I was not super drawn to Ardyn on my first time through the game, I was busy yelling at the characters (specifically Iggy and Gladio) for making such bad decisions. Why on earth would you trust him even a little bit?!?!?! He is practically carrying a sign saying ‘I’m a bad guy’! You’re protecting the primary leader of your government AND your only hope of salvation! Obvs I’m still frustrated.

But moving past that, I think the connection between Ifrit and Ardyn is interesting. It’s probably the most obvious connection, as they appear together often, and Ardyn can control him through the Scourge. But I think they mirror each other well on a story level -- Ifrit was originally a kind and benevolent god, who gave humans the gift of fire and uplifted them (like Promotheus). Ardyn was originally a kind and benevolent healer/king, who wanted to save humans from the Scourge. But like Prometheus, they both end up in chains and tortured for millinea. In the end, they both decide to destroy humanity.

They also tie into the Devil nicely. Upright, the card symbolizes oppression, addiction, obsession, dependency, excess, powerlessness, limitations. Reversed, it’s independence, freedom, revelation, release, reclaiming power, reclaiming control. The card itself shows the Devil front and center, with two smaller figures enchained at his feet (in this case Somnus and Aera). I originally had something more complicated in mind, including both Scourge Ardyn and Healer Ardyn to emphasize the upright/reversed sides of the card, but between the additional two characters and the flames, there was just too much visual chaos. And I had to include the Bone Throne, of course. :)

Aranea! This card took F O R E V E R, mostly because I decided to be clever and create Aranea’s canceled DLC look and Solara, who used a few existing elements but needed a lot of customization. I really liked Aranea’s character in the game, but I feel like the chopped story between Aranea and Solara is a major missed opportunity. There are a growing number of video games that focus on fathers and their children, and I would love to see something similar with a mother and her child. Aranea and Solara traveling and training together during the apocalypse, with Solara’s potential destiny as the Empress of Niflheim, would have been a fascinating mirror to the Witcher 3.

My original idea was to put Aranea and Garuda together, even though Garuda isn’t one of the Six. They’re both linked to air and the sky, Garuda as an eagle and Aranea as a dragoon and airship commodore, and they both have a tendency to drop in and save Noct’s royal rear when he’s in danger. FFXV Garuda is a counterpart to FFXIV Garuda, who is screamy and tyrannical, which mirrors Aranea’s role as counterpart to invading and conquering Niflheim.

Given the air connection of the characters, I focused on the suit of swords, and the six of swords really captured some elements of Aranea’s character. Upright: moving on, departure, leaving behind, distance, accepting lessons, and reversed: stuck in past, returning to trouble, running away from problems, trapped. Aranea isn’t loyal to the Empire, although she does care about her country and countrymen. In DotF, she is very aware of how she is exploited as a mercenary and commoner, but also how the MTs have it worse. Underlying that is the reality that, despite how badly she and her men are treated, as Niflheim subjects they benefit from the exploitation of the MTs -- and we know that the MTs are just regular humans whose growth has been accelerated and who have been systematically abused by Niflheim. So the card’s themes of running from problems captures this element of avoidance of responsibility, and the themes of transition and accepting lessons capture her rejection of the Empire and its military and taking on a role as a leader.

The card itself is a really striking image of a woman and child on a boat, with six swords stacked in front of them. There is a man pushing the boat, but to me, he always reads as an outsider -- he is standing well above the woman and child, and is separated from them by several harsh lines. To me, the card symbolizes the act of fleeing from hardship into peril, and being surrounded by danger and bleakness on all sides.

Which led me to creating Solara’s model! I stuck to her concept art as closely as possible, and also gave her a stuffed Cait Sith. I started with an unused child mesh from the game and rigged it with Talcott’s armature and using the Data Transfer to get most of the weighting correct. It was definitely a learning experience! It’s not perfect, but for a simple pose like this it worked.

For the rest of the card, the six swords became a six-legged spider demon (also chosen because ‘aranea’ means ‘spider’). The boat is symbolized in Aranea’s ship, approaching in the distance with a little help from Garuda. I’m still not completely happy with the final image, especially the wheat and how busy the composition is, but eh. I do like how Aranea’s jacket and Solara turned out, so I’ll have to find a way to use them again.

writing *ranting about ffxiv while I wait for a queue to pop

I was so sad man... I’m just trying to do the Hildebrand questline- it popped in the middle of writing that oh my god.

What I was going to say is that I thought this queue for the quest line’s third trial was going to be 15 minutes like the last two but saw it was instead “more than 30 minutes”, and given the last time I queued for a trial that said that it took two hours, I was a little concerned. To my surprise it popped initially just seven minutes in... until someone backed out. Then I started writing this. Then it popped, I waited half a minute, and someone withdrew again. And a third time immediately after. On the fourth time I actually got in. That was ridiculous. I’ll still continue writing though, since finishing the first Hildibrand saga is a good breaking point.

That was, to be expected, hilarious. A lot of it, anyhow. Some of it just sort of hurt. The funniest moment wasn’t even during the questline, it was during the first trial with Gilgamesh. Both me and the bard were inflicted with confusion and just started blasting each other. Him knocking arrows and all but stabbing them into my forehead, and me casting ruin directly into his eyes at point blank range. That and the getting turned into a frog and getting chased by chickens. Literally nothing can top that encounter for me.

I straight up did not care about the mystery/plot the majority of the time, but I guess I should expect by now that I’ll always enjoy the characters more than whatever mediocre plot they’re tangled in. Just. The Coliseum quests specifically mostly pissed me off. The pervy tentacle monster. The needless racism. The whole thing with painting a poor person wanting to find an easy way to not be poor as undeniably evil which the game KEEPS doing makes me so fucking mad, in combination with stewing about these other themes in JRPGs especially with being all “boo-hoo, won’t anyone thing about how hard it is being rich and noble, all the responsibility, how dare these dirty poors even think about getting revenge on the very people that keep them down.

Why aren’t they just happy with what they do have? They should just put in more work if they want to eat a warm meal, even though we’ve already established there’s no work to be had. Like jesus christ I’d swear some of the shit in this game and others was being written by some 17 year old medieval lordling with too much free time between tutoring sessions. What is these peoples’ obsessions with nobility? Like I get it makes for good fantasy content but have at least a little bit of self consciousness.

I feel like I always see these games acknowledge some kind of class structure and how it negatively effects those in its lowest rungs then shrug it off as “there’s nothing anyone can do about it” and paint the impoverished as villains for being upset with the people that do have the power to change it. Sort of a tangent but this specifically is why I despised and kind of relationship between Dorothea and Ferdinand in Three Houses. She calls him out and rightfully so in the first support, then he makes a batch of pastries completely from scratch one time and this apparently makes her think that all nobles aren’t so bad? Going from straight up not wanting nobles to exist to thinking hey, they’re people too :). I hate that. I hated that FE3H characters were mostly nobles or come from notable/rich families or whatever.

Similarly I hate that FFXIV has such a huge focus on the upper crust and just completely discards and lower-class person. Like, there was a mission where I had to check on some scared refugees and they attacked me in self defense and it made me kill them? And I reported back to the guy who asked me to check on them and he just went “Ah well, what can you do.” Like what the fuck is wrong with these writers sometimes???

I was about to say this was more of an issue with ARR but remembered how the people of the Brume were treated in HW, like a mob of bumbling idiots in desperate need of guidance. What drove me insane the most on that front was when the people were on the brink of revolt after that one girl basically martyred herself, and to remedy this Aymeric decided his order and the grand companies would have their little sparring mach, because nothing sparks patriotism more like sports. Even though this left the city with significantly less protection. And that it was held in an area where not a single citizen could see it. Also, the group the people were supposed to be rooting for was the order of knights and their lapdogs (Hilda’s group) which. just. none of it made sense. It was stupid. This kinda shit makes me afraid to eventually get to Stormblood and into the thick of the Ala Mhigo stuff which they have handled TERRIBLY so far like it boils my blood to think about it. This game is so racist it’s unreal.

but. god. I was talking about the Hildibrand questline. The bit on Costa del Sol was probably the closest I came to caring about the plot, plus it had some pretty good bits. Wasn’t a fan of the big “man in a dress” at the end, though it did make me think that men should be allowed to wear dresses in this game like it would’ve looked fine without the goofy hair and makeup :/ And I completely checked out on whatever that last bit of story was no I do not care that that one girl we’ve been traveling with was the thief all along I have never liked her. Also she played into that class issue I just ranted about. The reveal of her sister was also cheap and stupid. The elezen inspector professing his love for her was also weird? My first thought during that was “jesus christ man she was trying to commit mass mur-” and then I remembered that I/my WoL was crushing on Ysale before she got axed which comes in at #2 for funniest moment in this questline. Him doing that still came out of nowhere save one or two short scenes in separate quests to me.

But I’m exhausted of this now. I might go and start the next saga but I’ll probably go to sleep early... if anything has made me rethink playing past the free trial it’s the shit above but I’ll be honest I am pretty darn likely to cave. I can only hope the writers sorted at least some of their shit out between expansions.

Q3 : Why did you start writing this character?

A3 : When viera were teased at Fanfest, I lost my mind and have been unable to concentrate on any other character since. Aja was actually going to be a hrothgar, but when they genderlocked them and the model and general design didn’t fit her body type, well… plans changed.

Q4 : What first attracted you to this character?

A4 : Much like @yascaret’s answer, getting my gay hands on viera in FFTA and being obsessed since then. I wanted to write a warrior, a little battered but unbroken despite everything. She came out differently than originally planned, but in a good way. She’s just an even bigger himbo now.

Q5 : Describe the biggest thing you dislike about your muse.

A5 : I worry about Flanderizing her too hard, because while she is a big flirtatious himbo idiot I also want it to come across that she has depth.

Q6 : What do you have in common with your muse?

A6 : Not a lot. I guess we're both stubborn idiots with very long fuses that nonetheless eventually explode and/or destroy whatever is on the receiving end. Also what's gender precious

A7 : She probably wouldn’t acknowledge me at all, but we might bond over spicy noodles.

A8 : Lofn and Pjel are the obvious choice, but… Lofn and Pjel. I really love writing her alongside and against them because their personality traits both complement and chafe against one another, often in the same scene. Also I love their chemistry and look forward to how that plays out. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Q9 : What gives you inspiration to write your muse ?

A9 : B u n y d e a t h s q u a d. Just in general seeing my RP partners and roleplayers I haven’t interacted with yet writing and posting content for their characters really inspires me. As far as writing Aja, I take a handful of aesthetics, design elements, and themes and smash them together until something clicks. Listening to music and rolling through a prompt generator usually kick starts me into writing a drabble or developing something, and the FFXIV Write challenge has been great for that this month.

ONE TWO PICTURE YOU LIKE BEST OF YOUR MUSE’S FC: My characters don't really have face claims but there's a few faces that remind me of Helios. Namely this guy:

TWO HEADCANONS YOU HAVE FOR YOUR MUSE:

- THE REASON HE LIKES RED IS not actually because of his own conscious choice. He's got an asshole of a 'passenger' stuck in his head after he fled Doma, and he doesn't realize it but THAT'S when he got obsessed with the color red. The same goes for other things that weren't part of his personality or tastes before.

- Helios says that he has very little aether ability, but before fleeing Garlemald he actually had a lot of potential to be a great spellcaster. The 'passenger' is soaking up all the excess aether in its host's body, which makes Helios come across as having no ability besides what his Allagan device and alchemy can do.

THREE THINGS THAT YOUR MUSE LIKES DOING IN THEIR FREE TIME:

- Ever since he met a specific Keeper woman who loves hugs, Helios has been keeping a tiny window garden in his and Ferrus' living space. Taking care of the tiny plants helps him with his depression.

- Helios experiments with his alchemy and consumes books on the subject in his spare time. He is always happy to show someone his latest success--it's like someone taking up baking as a hobby.

- Speaking of such, he also has...baking as a hobby! If he has the materials on hand, he will shower friends and acquaintances with his concoctions of sweets or savory food items.

SEVEN PEOPLE THAT YOUR MUSE LOVES/LIKES:

- Dallia: At their first meeting, she gave him a wedgie right in the middle of a packed venue. Later she tricked him into believing they had gotten married and had a kid, and now she wanted a divorce. Later still she helped saved him from Sahagin. She's seen him without his mask and hasn't made fun of him. He tentatively trusts her, and wholeheartedly feels respect and affection for her. 11/10 best ex-wife, even in their custody battle for his bottle cap collection.

- Lili: The poor woman can't hear what this rambunctious buffoon is telling her with his flapping hands and lack of lips to read, but she Tries. Helios appreciates it.

- Kingfisher the Punch Cat: OH TWELVE DON'T HURT HIM FOR TOUCHING YOUR SISTER'S BUTT ONCE. (but uh hey thanks for the solid of saving him from some fish dudes)

- Val: Someday you will let him hug you, Val-Pal. Val is the only 'responsible' influence Helios has right now, besides Ferrus. He mutely offered to stand and be an awkward public buffer to Hawk. He offers to heal Helios at times. Seriously, Val is really good for Helios I wish the little idiot didn't ruin it by trying to climb atop Val and show his 'appreciation' by snuggling.

- Sparrow: Helios pitiful wheezing noises. While it's unfortunate that these two ended up not fleshing out their dingleberry little crushes because of OOC time constraints, I still love them and Helios is still a dumb idiot hung up over a sweet faced, innocent moon cat. She was the first person to rp at him and he believes 'she was the first person who was nice to me in Eorzea'. She took this dumb, nervous, hyperactive man and calmed him down with hugs and eyes that STARED at him. It's still ADORABLE.

- Yasu: He saw the older woman as a tentative 'mother' figure before, but because he's not coming 100 feet of Sparrow, he's not sure anymore if he still feels that way. Also he's afraid of her wrath.

- Llew: Helios has a good many friends, but few are at the 'bro' level of friendship like Llewannth is. In Helios' mind, they are quickly becoming besties; not only does Llew put up with his shenanigans, but he even encourages them. They spend their time together flirting and making jokes, and Llew keeps Helios out of his sad doldrums or even feeling an itch to be a bit more violent (meaning his 'passenger' pretty much takes a nap when Llew is around, which is GREAT). Llew is a bushel of secrets, though, and Helios constantly feels like one wrong move will burn everything between them to the ground. But even handling something as hot to the touch as Llew doesn't make him consider stopping; the joy of a challenge or a puzzle to solve flies that thought right out of his head.

TWO THINGS YOUR MUSE REGRETS:

Helios has many regrets, and it's hard to pick just two. The biggest are:

- Everything, everything he did on his personal project with Marcellus that he feels made his mentor go mad. If it wasn't for his stupid adoration that drove him to go above and beyond for the man, such as digging up his Thavnarian family's old alchemy secrets and experimenting on corpses and live subjects, Marcellus would have mourned his daughter's death in peace and Helios wouldn't have had to have killed them both (his version of the story, btw).

- Outside of his personal project dedicated to Marcellus, Helios also regrets the gas chambers full of Ala Mhigan war prisoners in the labs. He hates that he used them to test his assignments. He still has nightmares of men scratching at the walls until their fingers bled, trying to get out.

A PHOBIA YOUR MUSE HAS:

Children and being tied down. Also small spaces, but that doesn't make him have a big reaction.

Deeper in the Rabbit Hole

So looking more into SVSSS cuz it’s a new obsession and it looks like some of the questions I had got answered. I actually didn’t get to that part of the book yet and the opening of the series doesn’t mention it at all maybe to make it a surprise for people who haven’t read the book, but apparently even though original Binghe had a huge harem, he didn’t actually get along with them all that well and didn’t really treat them right so they all ganged up on him and kill him in the end. o.oa Hrm, so okay, that like covers my concerns with depicting homosexuality as something you can just switch then cuz that means he didn’t really have like true interest to begin with and was probably unknowingly closeted and just following what “society” says he should do or rather what the garbage author who wanted to make a crazy fantasy wanted. Plus it probably didn’t help that the author seemed to had written all of the men in the original story to have horrible frickin’ attitudes or something, so he just didn’t figure it out until Shen Yuan started rewriting the scenes and not being a huge dick.

Also, considering for some reason I fancy Shen Qingiu’s look over Binghe’s I just Google images of him sometimes just to look at his face and I came across the wiki that went into Qingqiu’s backstory and wow, that’s sad. He’s like written to be a mirror to Binghe to begin with it seems and also have a tragic backstory. But that’s also like baffling that the original writer would write two people to have tragic backstories to have antagonism and to be dicks to each other. Like why????? In that perspective, Shen Yuan’s changes seem a great deal more reasonable like I would think Qingqiu should have had more pity for Binghe who went through a hard life like he did. But maybe perhaps he’s written like some of the a-holes I have in my country that like to hold up institutions that keep other people poor and don’t care about voting against themselves because they believe in demagogues. Recent times have shown me that some people are crazy and don’t seem to have empathy or caring for people who are in positions that they were once in. It’s deplorable and not what I would think is a natural choice to make. But then I guess Qingqiu’s case he also had a massive mistrust of other men because of his backstory, so perhaps that is difficult to realize that you should pay it forward.

Anyway, just my wonderings because I’m waiting for the next ep to be available free and I’m still toward the beginning of the story in my reading cuz I have work and stuff. I’m glad that my concerns are easily put to rest in the book, but I’m just not there yet.

I’m kind of curious about Shen Yuan’s perspective, but I guess I’ll have to read that when their relationship starts. Like there’s no indication whatsoever of what his sexuality is personally, but he seems to kind of sarcastically hint at the idea just as a means of surviving the poison he got for saving Binghe. It seems like he’s kind of more indifferent though and more fluid and possibly on the ace spectrum technically, but at least initially just wants to survive but actually cares about Binghe on more of an emotional level so maybe that makes it work out. Like there are relationships where an ace is with someone who isn’t cuz they’re not like aromantic or anything but just aren’t too into the physical stuff. Either way, I’m by far enjoying the development and slow burn and just the premise of this story.

Other than that, I’m kind of obsessed with this in other ways. The opening theme I can’t get out of my head and I listen to it pretty often everyday. It’s not an incredible song on its own, but the flute melody at the beginning I really like and just the opening animations and ambiance of the show itself really lend itself to fit with the song rather well. The MV for it is not really that exciting because they slot in real life shots of the singer and that’s cool and I think that’s a popular MV approach for Chinese artists, but visually it’s kind of a mood kill to have a somewhat exciting melody go with someone just standing in a studio. Contrast just isn’t my thing and I usually like MVs that show a story.

But also I kind of have this so on my brain that on FFXIV I tried to make a Shen Qingqiu retainer. I tried. Hyur male, but like Qingqiu is like 184 cm, but Midlander is at most 182 cm and Highlanders are at minimum 187. WTF. Also don’t have the exact hair, but I came close. When I have money to spare I’ll probably try to get that one Mog Station outfit cuz it has the hair ornament piece that fits. The outfit itself is probably more embroidery and such than his outfit actually has, but it’s the closest I can get.
