On Beards And Deities

I am not your fucking brother you treasonous fucks.

At a bar recently I was asked if I ever comb my beard. The question baffled me, the whole point of the beard is zero grooming. My beard exists in a vacuum of effort. Just as atheism is the complete absence of belief in a deity so is my beard the absence of grooming. Why out of the nothingness of my beard’s existence would I create these beard obligations and rituals?

What do we mean by saying that existence precedes essence? We mean that man first of all exists, encounters himself, surges up in the world – and defines himself afterwards.

Beard grooming is an affectation. Beard grooming is a rejection of potential freedom. There are societal pressures outside of law and morals that threaten the freedom of individuals. Societal pressures like being married, the pressure to take on mortgage debt, the pressure to wear an unwrinkled shirt, the pressure to fuck in a way that is morally agreeable to newspapers. Not all these pressures are negative but freedom is about deciding which of these pressures you sincerely want to accept. It is upon us to have an autonomy of choice beyond the mores of our time. It is not easy to accept our freedoms, many forces which will try to convince us to self deceive, to live without autonomy of choice.

I am sure there exists a few fastidious cunts who sincerely enjoy spending time and money on beautifying the hair on their faces. The rest of us are being manipulated. Forced to live values we do not authentically hold. Some places try to inshrine cultural affectations into law. Multiple States have written laws banning atheists from holding office.

Arkansas: Article 19, Section 1 No person who denies the being of a God shall hold any office in the civil departments of this State, nor be competent to testify as a witness in any Court.

Maryland: Article 37 That no religious test ought ever to be required as a qualification for any office of profit or trust in this State, other than a declaration of belief in the existence of God; nor shall the Legislature prescribe any other oath of office than the oath prescribed by this Constitution.

Mississippi: Article 14, Section 265 No person who denies the existence of a Supreme Being shall hold any office in this state.

North Carolina: Article 6, Section 8 The following persons shall be disqualified for office: First, any person who shall deny the being of Almighty God.

South Carolina: Article 17, Section 4 No person who denies the existence of a Supreme Being shall hold any office under this Constitution.

Tennessee: Article 9, Section 2 No person who denies the being of God, or a future state of rewards and punishments, shall hold any office in the civil department of this state.

Those laws are unconstitutional and unenforcible, a token virtue signal to theists that their cultural affectations are just. Religion is a set of beliefs foisted upon people for the profit and power of a ruling theocratic class. Some people enjoy this ruling theocratic class and set of beliefs. However many are not socially allowed to live without religion. Many go through the motions of a religious life, not exercising or even allowed their autonomy of choice on deities.

I went to a catholic high school and briefly a public high school. The young women of the catholic high school had to wear uniforms and many spent hours each morning on their hair and makeup. The young women in the public school could wear what they want, many rolled out of bed to school wearing track pants with minimal primping. The morning routines of students living in the same city who are the same age and gender varied wildly. Similarly 63% of Slovakians believe in a higher power compared to 16% of Czechs. Our so called individual ideas are not our always our own but a capitulation to the culture we are in. Behaviour is often foisted upon us by our peers, not by our convictions or preferences.

The obligations for our appearances wildly vary by gender and geography. The cuntiest countries demand women must not been seen at all on bullshit religious grounds. Those same countries have laws governing beard care, both are cultural demands to submit to the authority of the controlling religion. Other countries culturally insist upon wearing uncomfortable shoes while having your face slathered with chemicals after removing all/almost all body hair. Those same cultures often require a decorative noose fastened around the neck when working in an office. Cultural demands can be created for theocratic control and others can be motivated by profit. One demands submission to religious authority, the other sells ties and mascara. The biggest growth potential for the beauty industry in Western Culture is men.

I am supporter of equality but that does mean men should increase our obligations, rather women should strive to decrease theirs with our help. Grooming your beard protects the status quo of women’s obligations by joining it. Men’s grooming is a race to the bottom were the women are. There is a direct line from the beard grooming of today to wearing nut-sack bras in the future. All this cuntery because we could not refuse the bullshit cultural demands of our time. A commenter (Vlad) on this very blog announced he was on a juice cleanse. Men are throwing each other baby showers for fuck sake. We cannot become an Iran, a country of freedom destroyed by brutal decorum obligations.

We will freedom for freedom’s sake, in and through particular circumstances. And in thus willing freedom, we discover that it depends entirely upon the freedom of others and that the freedom of others depends upon our own. Obviously, freedom as the definition of a man does not depend upon others, but as soon as there is a commitment, I am obliged to will the liberty of others at the same time as my own. I cannot make liberty my aim unless I make that of others equally my aim.

I am beholden to myself. I can choose how I care to be judged and how I carry myself. That same freedom from judement and autonomy should be extended to others as part of our collective freedom. Let your beards grow wild and free in accordance to what you want, not what is demanded. Hold the fucking line you bastards. Do it for each other, do it for yourselves. Grow an unkept beard for your children so that they can have the freedom to live better lives of their choosing.
