Honest thoughts about Krillku? (Krillin x Goku)

This is kinda gonna be long, but even though I am not an avid shipper of it, to me It’s 3rd most. Well I don’t wanna say valid because that implies other ships ARENT. but it’s like top 3 goku ships period to me. Makes complete sense, has a foundation that beats most other ships, etc.

Like just think about it THIS way: goku in the original series freaks the fuck out two times over tragedies that happens to his friends, right? But like. Both of those times were actually because Krillin died. So like that’s more foundation for a ship than like... Many of the other characters he interacts with just in general.

Goku's love for krillin (canonically platonic, but no less important and definitely good grounds for shipping) literally makes him transcend. like he literally goes super saiyan for krillin, in anger and grief for krillin. his first time ever experiencing such strong negative emotions were arguably when krillin died the first time (though we don't know his actual reactions to grandpa gohan's death, so there's a lot of room to speculate).

goku and krillin have the kind of friendship in the series that if it were literally ANY other series, all the girlies would be shipping them, and anyone outside of that would be going "why cant they just be friends" LMAOOOOOO , ageless debate that somehow krillku/gokrill got around. that's the kinda debate I just find funny in general so its almost disappointing we don't have it here. almost.

anyways, my biggest thoughts are that the ship is slept on and is super compelling and not enough people agree with this, wheres the krillku ship art ? wheres the fics? cmon people !!!!!!!

What do you think the human characters' pasts were like? Like how did Yamcha wind up a desert bandit? Who were Tien's parents? Or Krillin's? Do you think 18 ever wanted to meet them? Or go to Orin Temple?

first, I would like to state that I am flying by the seat of my pants answering this. I don't have any super strong headcanons regarding any of this, I am just going off of some thoughts that become more detailed as I spiral. Let's get into it, shall we?

Yamcha

I think Yamcha feels like someone that grew up relatively normal, something big happened to change his life forever as a young teen, and he had to make his own way the only way he knew how. Probably, he got desperate, stole something, and then realized how easy and useful this was for his survival, and then took to being a bandit full-time as the successes piled up. until he met goku, of course.

I really think he had some connection to a regular life at some point. He has some really normal aspirations and interests and really easily assimilates into regular society when he's done being a bandit. Honestly, he might have not even been a bandit for that long considering how quickly he turned around from that lifestyle. I wonder if maybe he was taught to fight by his parents? I think it would be cool if one parent taught him to use a sword and the other taught him the wolf fang style he uses.

Tien

I honestly feel that he was raised by the temple. As in, he probably was an orphan they took in and molded for their purposes. Maybe he was left there for reasons by his parents, or he was scouted by Shen or something because he was born with a third eye and that is a sign of great enlightenment. or something. I'm not sure. I think it would be an interesting idea to explore.

One does not just choose to be an assassin or something one day, that's for sure. he was being raised into one, and it was a path he definitely would not have taken had he not been raised into it. He has a good heart at his core and that really shows once he has a talking to from roshi.

Krillin (and 18 / k18)

I think Krillin is the one I have the most headcanon on just because this is something I have thought about before. I hc that he was an orphan raised by his temple and was a bit of a runt, maybe underfed etc for probably more than one reason (lack of resources or getting limited meals before it was healthy to do so, maybe bullied by his temple brothers and maybe starved on more than one occasion due to it?). It was clear when we saw his previous temple brothers in the tournament that they had a bad relationship. I think, unless Krillin has a bad relationship with his family, he would have not stayed with the temple for even as long as he did. I think he also would not have stayed with roshi for many years into his adult life had he had parents he could have been living with or helping etc.

I think 18 would not really think too deeply about it until she is pregnant with Marron. Krillin and 18 both have no parental figure in their lives except for master roshi, and .... Dr. Gero, I guess. having Dr. Gero as your one parental figure that you can remember, she probably wouldn't think about his parents until she is about to be one, and realizing she has NOTHING to go off of. I think at this point she might ask Krillin about his experiences and so on, and he would answer to the best of his abilities.

I think... if 18 insisted (which, she probably wouldn't), Krillin would show her the Orin temple. But I really don't think that would be the case. I think she would hear only a little about his life there and decide it isn't anything she would be interested in unless she's allowed to kill someone (haha jokes. unless..??). So,,,, I do not think they would visit and I don't think there is any parent to meet. roshi kinda is the parent, in a sense. or like,,, from when he was a teen to an adult they have been together in a sort of master-student father-son way. 18 kinda already knows his parental figure.

honestly, yes

i think it WOULD HIT !!!! i think it would be so fun to play silly games like that with familiar faces such as goku, krillin, and bulma, etc, and honestly... it reminds me that my favorite db game growing up was a db game, and it was because my brothers and I could play against each other with characters that would have never interacted in canon, and those characters would say something that really makes sense to them. like bardock thinking goten is kakarot, and goten is like?? tf is a kakarot? a food?

idk I just think that would be a genuine breath of fresh air to the games they have now, which arent bad. the one db dead by daylight game is really cool in the same way!!! if there was a dragon ball cart game I would def want it (but not have anyone to play with HAHAHA)

My Dragon Ball hot take is that if you go off of solely Toriyama's original manga Goku is a deeply caring person who loves his family but is not suited to the day-to-day responsibilities of being a family man, and thus really COULD be called a "bad dad".

But also that Toriyama clearly isn't writing a family drama and that would be depressing as hell so I'm happy to accept the filler and fanon that improves the Son family dynamic. People insisting that Goku's a shitty parent should lighten up.

And even if Toriyama is behind the story, I can't accept the way Goku is characterized in Super most of the time because he was never so callous after growing up before.

This is the most reasonable hot take on a topic where goku-goers are very divided LOL, perfect middle ground !!!!

I think people who think goku is a “shitty parent” either have outstanding parents or simply are taking it too seriously, because honestly the series doesn’t give a whole lot of information about his home life, but going by what we DO have is enough to tell me he is a pretty good dad, who takes care of his kids where he is physically able to, if that makes sense.

Half of the series he’s literally just not available to because he’s fucking DEAD (+ does not know something is happening to his kids so cannot just come back to help) so you can’t count that as bad parenting, and the other half of the series, he’s doing what he can to help his kids (and the world) in a world that is quite literally full of villains who are trying to kill them all. If I had to choose between forcing my kid into a situation where they are prepared to fight back vs letting them and everyone else die? Yeah I would want my kid prepped to fight back. For example.

Therefore. I think goku is definitely unconventional in his parenting because there is no room to be a regular dad, and he’s definitely not like 100% good dad either, there are definitely places he could have done better.

And you’re totally right that there simply not enough info on the day-to-day in Toriyama’s canon, and super doesn’t do much good to his character hahaha,,, if all of that was written in, I think Toriyama would not actually write it in a way that is very deep anyways ??

I kinda ended up rambling. Mostly I agree with you, even though I don’t consider him a “bad dad”. I think he’s def not the best one, though.

I think they should have let Gohan bite people in the earlier parts of Z. He was like 4 it would have been funny the way Goku biting cell was but also very fitting for a child that just came out of living in the wild for a year.

literally so true actually, I think not only would this be so real of him as a kid left alone with animals for an extended period of time but also. definitely a trait he could have gotten from Goku.
