This starts off as a tragedy. Lady Rubeckia is the only daughter of the Holy Pope. On the surface her life is perfect, but she's actually a political tool. The Borgia family is wildly corrupt. They've been marrying Rubeckia off to known enemies and making her spy on them. Her marriages never last, because the husband always finds out she's a rat. Or he gets killed by the pope.

She is a puppet, and she can't run. She can't hide her identity or leave her noble life behind. Her own brother, Cesare, is freakishly obsessed with her. He beats her but he expects her to love him. It's implied that his feelings are incestuous. He treats her like his bride, even though they are blood relatives. He's an easy villain to hate and I can't wait to watch him suffer.

He will suffer, and probably die, because the next husband candidate falls for her. Izek Omerta is a legendary northern knight. He won a war when he was just seventeen. He's a genius at killing, but all that time in the army has made his personality cold. He never had a childhood...so he's like this.

He's still very likeable. He has a strong sense of responsibility and he takes good care of his soldiers. His greatest flaw is his icy personality. The ladies in his country fear him, and he's not a great talker. It's impossible to flirt with him, despite his handsome face, because he never smiles.

Freya is his childhood friend, and she isn't bothered by his coldness. She is wildly popular and everyone wants Izek to marry her. Her manners are impeccable and she consoled him after his mother's death.

When Izek marries a foreginer instead it becomes a scandal. The Pope pushed the marriage through to get power and information, and everyone knows it was not a love match. When Rubeckia arrives everyone hates her bitterly. A random maid literally brings a demon into her bedroom to kill her. Freya uses this hate, and tries to sabotage Rubeckia.

Freya poisons herself. It's an ingenious move. She doesn't even tell her mother or brother the truth. Rubeckia has no way to defend herself, because everyone hates her.

I mean almost everyone hates her. Rubeckia doesn't want to die, so she's been acting cute. She's been boldly proclaiming that she loves Izek, and trying to stay out of trouble. She doesn't love him in the beginning, but her cute act works well. Izek has never seen Freya as a woman, and his sister also likes Rubeckia. They're friends. Ellenia Omerta is her first and most supportive ally. Rubeckia has the approval of her husband and his sister. Nobody else matters.

Izek suspects that Rubeckia tried to kill Freya. She didn't, but the point is he doesn't care. He's willing to cover up the assassination attempt because he's so in love with her. Freya is a fake friend anyway. I don't feel bad for her. The yandere reveal in this one was really good. I didn't expect Izek to throw his best friend aside for his wife, but he did without hesitation. He doesn't care if she's a bloodthirsty madwoman. He just wants her love.
