very deeply in my jackie nat feelings would you care to take a rambling walk with me?? natalie takes the brunt of so much from these girls, she’s so often an outlet for their teen anger bullshit and she so deeply doesn’t deserve it and jackie is only ever truly Mean to nat of all the girls, so it stands out so fucking much.
jackie also constantly taking a different type of heat from the team, both of them wanting to protect and love the girls the best they can, nat never once questioning whether she would hold that shit against them, nat immediately assuming role of protector and sustainer. jackie trying but failing in this setting, jackie being bitchy to nat after she screws around instead of hunting AND pulling shauna out of the wreckage as she tries to save van AND supporting the attempt to hike out and the attempt with the plane AND AND AND—all For and About shauna. shauna eclipsed the rest of the girls for her so deeply and immediately, shauna was jackie’s priority and she failed her, she lost her, she never had her (or so she died thinking).
we see nat and jackie start to push back, start to team up, start to try and protect the girls from themselves. both of them are seeing the danger of the violent shit going unchecked and the terrifying paths of spiritualism/psychosis/whatever it is, but jackie loses THE girl, the ONE girl that she cares about more than the rest combined and she takes those hits in a series of discovery, and ignored opportunities for honesty, and begging for one tiny hint that shauna loved her, and those hits took her out completely. she cared about ALL of them, but she abandoned them all, because for jackie there was never a life without shauna. there was no everyone EXCEPT shauna, there was only shauna AND everyone. but natalie didn’t abandon them. nat couldn’t. nat wouldn’t. no matter what cruelty she’s faced or continues to face, she won’t leave them. that isn’t an option to her.
so jackie stops eating. she stops caring. she begs for a reason to stick around one last time and shauna doesn’t give it to her. so jackie just keeps sleeping. nat wakes up before dawn and she hikes and she comforts and she tells lies that tear her up inside because even if she loves one individual more, or in a different way, above all natalie loves the team. jackie is the reason they survive that first winter, and nat is the reason they make it out alive.
you’re lucky, you know? I think shit is gonna get a lot worse out here, but you’re already dead, so way to make everyone jealous of you one last time. I’m sorry for what we did. but who knows, eating you might be the reason we survive the winter, so…thanks. rest in peace, jackie.
who thinks jackie’s lucky, who’s jealous? certainly not everyone. ben probably. but the rest of them? they’re trying to survive. natalie is the one who’s jealous. natalie is the one who wishes she could avoid the darkness. but natalie knows she’ll stay alive, because they need her. and, just like she let’s go of the shit that jackie said to her and gives her the most genuine honoring and thanks of anyone (when she is the only one jackie was ever that harsh with), she’ll forgive the rest of them for their much deeper cruelties.
jackie served them in death, but nat is forced to serve them in life. and that is so much fucking harder.

there was something off about lottie’s interaction w her therapist right… the way she talked to lottie and her tone of voice..: the fact that she called her lottie not charlotte… the fact that we don’t see her face and only barely see her from behind…..

I slept on it, and I'm still so disappointed with this episode :(((((((((
In the weirdest possible way, because in theory, I'm absolutely on board with about ¾ of the plot development. We have fantastic acting and exciting, dramatic scenes. The only problem is that everything happened way too quickly and in a completely unbelievable psychological manner.
I feel like there should be one missing episode between this one and the previous one - it could have been brilliant and full of drama.
Imagine this - someone suggests that they can't lose Lottie, so they should make a sacrifice to the Wilderness/feed her with the meat of that sacrifice - and they face actual resistance from a few people!!!!! Then we have a big argument, two factions - people who blindly believe in Lottie's power vs. people who still don’t and who have reservations about murder. And we have a dramatic conflict for a night, the situation becomes tense, the people wanting to kill for Lottie outnumber the rest, so the rest realizes that if they don't comply, they could become targets. We see Shauna's guilt, we see that some group members would like to designate her as a sacrifice for a the obvious reason, and that conversation between Shauna and Lottie isn't deleted from the episode (!!!)
I missed something like that so much. They're really trying to convince us that, for example, Nat, who was never particularly invested in Lottie's cult and WHO AT THE BEGINNING OF THE EPISODE SAID TO BEN THAT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN BEST IF LOTTIE DIED, would agree to it without protests????? The same goes for Tai - not long ago, she doubted and only participated in rituals for Van, and in the moment of greatest despair and fear for Shauna's life. She seriously wouldn't have any reservations about the thought that Van could be killed???? Akilah is a kind person who avoids hurting others and also attended Lottie's meditations without great faith, mainly finding comfort in those group rituals - she would plan a murder without expressing much despair?
A few additional powerful scenes could have made this episode fantastic. I really needed a conversation between Tai, still doubtful, and Van (and both of them facing the thought that their girlfriend could die!), maybe a similar scene for Nat and Travis, less convinced individuals coming to the understanding that they either agree or it could be their end, Lottie's girls grappling with the question of whether they believe in their cult leader so much that they would actually DIE for her...
Also, I was eagerly waiting for an explanation of why Jackie's necklace would end up with each subsequent designated victim - and they didn't give us ANY. Even something as cheap as a dream/random vision/words muttered by Lottie with high fever would have been better than nothing. I have no idea where in Shauna's mind the idea of tarnishing her only significant token from Jackie came from in that way. It could have been great, but in the episode it's an empty gesture.
Even a few powerful scenes between the idea of making a sacrifice and drawing the cards could have changed this episode in my eyes to a 10/10 episode. Without them, I watched something that doesn't make sense psychologically from the perspective of many characters :(

Misty really is the most character of all time - the way she's instantly recognisable as the awkward high school girl that I probably, in all honesty, would have mostly felt sorry for while also wanting to keep my distance.
But also she doesn't seem self-concious enough to care, which I love. And then she's a little bit fucking terrifying - but also I can't stand when the other girls are openly laughing at her.
Misty. Character. All time.

i just really want to read a fic of callie sadecki over the years gradually piecing together just how much jackie baggage her parents relationship has
like you know that this is not something that is spoken about that much in that house because shauna is clearly trying her damn best to repress everything and play the Good Wife And Mother role and just totally pretend that she's fine, really, everything's fine, and jeff literally had to secretly read her wilderness diaries to find out what the fuck happened out there and then literally never let on to shauna that he knew any of it because he knew that We Do Not Talk About This (like literally did she even ever tell him about wilderness baby? can you imagine finding out you got your now wife pregnant when you were teenagers and cheating on your girlfriend/her best friend, years after the fact, while secretly reading her diaries where she talks about those months she spent in a cannibal cult??? and then literally not being able to talk to her about any of it because you are Not Supposed To Know, and you know that raising the subject has a high chance of causing her to just crack apart??? i mean, yikes. gotta feel sorry for the dude)
so yeah, callie is clearly super aware of how jackie is a Big Presence, absolutely haunting this house, but like there is no way anyone has ever really talked to her about it, so she must have put it together herself through the tiniest snippets of information and hints and weird vibes and whatever information the general public has, and probably strangers gossiping on the internet, and maybe digging through old yearbooks, and possibly overhearing teachers who taught her parents gossiping with each other, and probably some weird interactions with jackie's parents when she was little enough that she couldn't be left on her own and god knows what else
and yeah, i just think that'd be super interesting to read about

the fact that the first act of cannibalism in the wilderness isn't an act of survival but an act of intense grief. and the way shauna does it in secret. the way all her means of getting close to jackie have been unacceptable and shameful

I love Yellowjackets okay it’s CLEAR if you observe my insane habits around this show but listen to me stay with me they so clearly did NOT have the 96 timeline planned out enough when writing the adults in season one. Or it got changed or added to or whatever to a Strong Degree. Maybe this is execs trying to make the show and it’s characters more palatable for mainstream success?? idk it feels possible to me.
But SHAUNA? Present Shauna was haunted by Jackie almost every scene of s1. It was so painfully clear how much Jackie’s presence was felt by her entire family CONSTANTLY. The bunnies, the conversations they had, the hallucinations all of it!! Jackie Jackie Jackie dead girl alive haunting the narrative. This season? Radio silence. And like pls don’t tell me shauna just has too much going on this season to feature any Jackie haunting like rewatch s1 she was PLENTY FUCKING BUSY having affairs and being blackmailed by her husband and doing murder!!! Jackie was so woven in to her character that NOTHING was untouched by her. So what, now we’ve seen Jackie’s death in 96 so she doesn’t haunt her anymore in present?? Now the baby is the strongest presence looming over her family? (This is said in an interview with the show runners and I’ve talked about it in another post!) When it wasn’t felt at all s1? No, you don’t want to spoil things in 96 so it is tricky, but there could’ve been hints. We always knew the baby would go poorly at the very fucking least. And the lack of Jackie haunting is a HUGE change. If you don’t think so, go back and watch s1 like I promise you it was POTENT. So does shifting the cause for her violence to being heavily based on losing the baby make a general audience more sympathetic to her? I think it might.
Misty?? Crystal???? If you watch s1 present Misty, there is no presence of crystals loss impacting her. They didn’t even have Crystal as a character. Misty was shown with a very unwavering proclivity to feel EXCITEMENT during horrible things. That continued into adulthood. Yeah, as we see characters more, we get more details. Sure. But the issue is the present timeline characters are only shifting based on the unfolding events of 96, you know what I mean? Like I’m sorry but the impact of Crystal and Misty’s panic around her and this new crushing GUILT for what she’s done was not a presence in s1 adult Misty. To make way for this crystal arc, teen Misty just doesn’t give a single FUCK about Ben anymore? Not obsessing with him or controlling him? And you might say she transferred her obsession. She got bored of her toy. Okay MAYBE yes, but in present day she doesn’t transfer. Walter would be a new option and she’s locked on natalie. Adult Misty has kept tabs on every single Yellowjacket, she has room for multiple lines of obsession. Her just dropping anything with Ben is odd and what makes her more sympathetic? Being a fucking monster to Ben? Or accidentally causing crystals death and mourning her and feeling an influx of guilt for her shitty actions?
I WORRY that we’re seeing a series of unplanned (therefore unshown in the adult versions of them that we ALREADY HAD in s1) events to increase sympathy and likability. I could probably think about this for more of them but shauna and Misty really stand out. YES you can and should develop characters as a series evolves, but the issue is if you show them in the PRESENT you can’t make them EVOLVE based on what you’re revealing in the PAST, does that make sense? It can inform their present actions, you can highlight different facets of them, all sorts of stuff. But this feels like something wayyy beyond that.
I hope I’m wrong and I hope they bring it back around <3 like so sincerely <3 and if you disagree and this makes perfect sense to you I’m happy for you <3 I wish that I did not feel this way <3 I’ve been trying to live in denial land about this all season <3 but it’s hitting hard right now <3

i've seen a few posts of people being mad about javi's death and saying "he's just a kid" as if they are expecting the Murder Cannibal Cult show to feature characters who are making morally good decisions and not.... murdering and cannibalizing one another

"i hope your favorite character dies" is basic. "i hope your favorite character kills her queerbait girlbestie and ends up with a man" is smart. it's possible. it's terrifying.

Yellowjackets finale long outburst below (spoilers obviously):
IMO, this episode was much better than the previous one (which was incredibly disappointing in terms of character development and the lack of important scenes that would have allowed viewers to understand their decisions).
I'm torn when it comes to adult Nat’s fate.
On one hand I'm really sorry that the storyline of a character who was suicidal and started finding meaning in life and overcoming grief ends like this. And what doesn’t help is that it was the second consecutive episode in which adult YJs storyline was poorly, shakily written. I mean the fact that almost all of them finally agreed to make sacrifice was terribly justified… Why did Tai and Nat suddenly change their mind????? Where’s any build-up to this??? I only really buy into Lottie and Van's motivations.
On the other hand - if the writers had to kill off one of the adult characters, I would nominate Nat myself, sorry! I love her in both timelines, but let's face it - they didn't give her any interesting storyline after s1. Adult Nat was also, in a way, the least morally grey and the least messed up of all of them (contrary to appearances) – and it made her the least interesting to me (although it's like choosing between my children).
Her death scene was in character and provided a meaningful conclusion to her arc. As a teenager she let Javi die to save herself, and it haunted her for 25 years. Therefore, as an adult she instinctively chose to shield another innocent young person with her own body, instead of letting another victim burden her conscience once again. This make sense for her character.
So I'm not completely convinced about killing her off (did they really have to kill any of them at this point?), but I'm also not particularly angry at the writers for that decision. It all depends on where they will take the storyline of the adult YJs from here. The only thing I would definitely change is rewriting most of the scenes involving the adult characters to make it clear why they are doing what they're doing, because the explanation of their behavior and motivations in the last two episodes was terribly lacking.
Moving on to smaller, irritating plot points: killing off Kevyn Tan while leaving Mustache Cop alive was incredibly annoying, especially considering that Kevyn wasn't a bad person and had a child, and just the sight of Mustache Cop gives me a rash.
Also until the end I had hope that Walter would turn against the YJs (or be used as a sacrifice) and that his presence in the show would be somehow justified. But no, it seems like they're just forcing heterosexuality on Misty :((( Elijah Wood seems like a fantastic person irl, and I'm almost sorry that I dislike his character so much. I could probably survive the unnecessary introduction of a love interest of the opposite sex just to prove that Misty’s into men. But the fact that his personality is a more irritating and less interesting version of Misty's is just unbearable. I can't stand this kind of lazy writing.
But I was right about Ben surviving the season!!!! I kept saying every week that they wouldn't get rid of him that soon, and I was right, even though the entire fandom was nominating him to kick the bucket every episode. Come on, he’s a character with a great potential and from the beginning there were two options: either they would give him a corruption arc, or he would stick to his principles and eventually become opposition for the rest of the team. In the finale they took a very interesting direction. The last scene with the burning cabin was fantastic, and I can't wait to see how this storyline unfolds. Maybe he’s still in that cave in the adult timeline xd
Long story short, the season wasn't half as good as it could and should have been, but the stronger moments are so impactful that it’s still my fave (currently airing) show.
