#you should check out legend of minglan
Note
given that I finally had to put magnificent century down because the soap opera antics (while still enjoyable in terms of I can shut my brain off) glad for the new rec! can't wait to check this out! (does it feed into my east asian valyria ideas? yes, yes it does)
The whole Story of Yanxi Palace is on YouTube, and I think Viki as well. It's really good and you should watch it! I watch a lot of Chinese dramas to keep my language skills sharp now that we don't live there anymore, and the historical dramas are my favorites. I also liked The Legend of Ruyi, The King's Woman, The Story of Minglan... and a bunch more I can't remember right now. I need to find some new ones to watch actually.
(as for East Asian Valyria, I'd be interested in hearing your take on that. I've always seen Valyria as a hodgepodge of classical antiquity, sort of a mashup of ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt. The government reminds me a lot of Athenian democracy in that freeholders all got a vote and they only elected a leader in times of crisis, rather than having a full senate. Athens was also really hostile to foreigners, had a large pantheon of gods, practiced slavery, and was terribly repressive to women, and gets kind of romanticized or whitewashed in our American study of history. Rome was brutally expansive and took slaves from its defeated people, and Ptolemaic Egypt practiced brother-sister marriage to keep the bloodlines pure. Slavery was too integral to Valyrian society for it to fit into Chinese culture for me, and I guess George was doing his version of the sort of pan-East Asian fantasy culture that was popular in the 90s with Yi Ti).

hello! I saw you've watched legend of zhouhua. As a massive Minglan fan, I wanted to see that lead actor in something again... but when I started watching it left me cold. The performances felt flat. So I dropped it pretty early. What is your honest take? Should I try again? How good is the acting and writing on the whole?
I would say that if you really want to see FSF because you really liked Minglan, Zhuohua wouldn’t be the place the start. Prince of Lan Ling (made in 2013) would be a much better place to start. Or if you want to watch Guo Jingming’s take on LOTR, Ice Fantasy (made in 2016). Or my personal favorite, Jade Palace Lock Heart with Yang Mi, which I think came out in 2012.
So my honest evaluation, despite my many post dedicated to it during its run:
Cons: if your introduction to FSF was Minglan, the dubbing is hard to get used to in Zhuohua, although he’s also dubbed over in Prince of Lan Ling, Ice Fantasy, and Jade Palace Lock Heart. The much bigger con is the post production smoothing and filter team went extremely overboard, and I think to the detriment of the cast because it erased microexpressions, etc. I’ve seen BTS clips sans dubbing and filter and it was honestly better.
That said, I actually really ended up liking Zhuohua because it was very relaxing for me to watch and it helped that I had no expectations other than the fact that I’ve been watching FSF since 2011 and Jing Tian since 2015😂 The OTP dynamic (very grumpy-sunshine at the beginning and just in general one of those fairly functional OTPs) really worked well for me in particular (and I’m someone who enjoys older aka north of 30 year old characters and actors in cdramas), and there is something about this OTP that really hits the spot for me. I don’t know how much episodes you’ve watched, but for me episodes 4 and 5 are really where the OTP dynamic and plot picks up, and I did like the main leads’ chemistry. What I liked was that the characters are largely logical, intelligent people who (largely) did logical, intelligent things. That said, it’s not a top notch script — it’s clearly meant to be an idol drama that ended up going with an older cast and needed to age characters up. But it is aware of the limitations the script — it’s not a complicated dramas about social issues, and I find it at its best when it’s just the OTP interacting with each other.
So I think it’s worth a retry, despite the cons. But check out FSF’s older works first.

Hi! I am a new fan of WYB. I never try to follow my idol's private life until i came across bjyx stuff on twitter and read a lot about them (ybxz) being together, double standard of wyb, the way he only gave special smile to xz (this is what bjyx believe),and etc, but after i watch bts of legend of fei, I have some doubts. I mean, I never see wyb gave such a genuine smile for a woman and thats zhao liying to the point that i think he has a crush on her lol(even though i know she has married
Hi, anon! Happy to see a new fan!
Disclaimer: fake, cpn, don’t take this for real.
I must admit I don’t really like the term “following someone’s private life”, though antis may say that I’m doing precisely that by especulating and spreading cpn hypotheses. Remember that turtles feed on things they do in public: posts in their social networks, public appearances, interviews.
By the way, anon, I think this has been sent to the wrong blog. If you’ve read any of my previous posts, you’ll know that I think yizhan is a thing.
I’m a fan of both dd and ZLY, but I don’t ship couples based sorely on being a fan or whether I think they make a good couple. I don’t think bjyxszd because I’m a fan of gg and dd or just because they look good together (which they do).
About legend of fei bts, I’ve watched some of them. And remember that dd was playing a role that has a very different personality from his own, which would make someone think “oh, wow, he must really like them to smile so much when he’s usually so aloof.” That’s I think a reaction from a new fan. But then, just based on that, you could say that his relationship with feng-ge in ddup is also strange because he doesn’t laugh like that with anyone else.
I’ll say that I think ZLY and dd are good friends. They have similar personalities, and they’re both known for being very straightforward people. They both like weiya (the cords that suspend them in the air). They have very friendly interactions when they’re together (tencent awards and ddup are what come to my mind). But that doesn’t necessarily mean a crush.
Maybe it’s just me, but I think a man and a woman can be friends perfectly without anything between them, a belief that usually it’s not shared in Chinese culture. That’s why I still get a certain degree of distance between them, even though they’re definitely friendly with each other.
Of course, this is all my view and you’re allowed to disagree and ship whoever you like. However, you’ll notice that their interactions had been reduced to 0 (from what I’ve seen) after the promotions, while turtles still get yizhan content every once in a while. There’s a limit to what can be considered chance.
