Adding onto this post because I LOVE this take.

Tbh I also feel such a similarity between low level gems and growing up disabled. Like Phos Cinnabar and Antarc are all skilled in their own right (phos's abilities get brushed over until they "make up" for their low hardness) and a sentiment among the higher level gems that they "came out weaker". We see Phos struggle with swords because they are not designed with weaker gems in mind, even the way the buildings are designed tbh seems hazardous if you are a weaker gem. Like seriously Phos slips over and shatters but it would be so easy to just not build everything outta the one stone like come on.

Phos's entire character arc resonates with me, being someone with an invisible disability trying so damn hard to still be "useful" to everyone else despite being constantly told you aren't as capable.

Phosphophylite's struggle really hits home to anyone marginalised tbh, their entire struggle is the fact they are unfairly seen as lesser for not fitting in the "strong gem that is good at fighting" archetype, particularly at the start of the story.

thinking about how phos primarily befriended low level gems at the beginning … their connections with cinnabar and antarc felt deeper and closer because they were other low hardness gems . it feels like growing up queer and finally meeting another queer person and having a connection just through that shared experience. low level gems aren’t exactly discriminated against but they do operate at a much larger disadvantage than the higher level gems

if you’re a low hardness gem you can’t do things the other gems can, or if you do (like fight) you have to be careful, or do it in a way the others don’t (using an alloy as a shield and weapon). you have to be more vigilant about your own body and safety than the other gems do and it’s something they wouldn’t understand

at the same time, dia is the only higher level gem that cares about phos pre winter. and i think its bc they also feel “othered” in a way. they’re already under so much pressure to be just like bort, and diamonds are expected to be the best. it’s the same way that like, even if you have certain privileges that certainly give you a leg up in life, they can still come with their own problems
