her  question  brings  an  amused  smile  to  his  own  lips,  studying  her  for  a  moment.  “  well  i’m  tall,  that  much  is  clear.  ”  head  tilts  slightly  to  one  side,  arms  folding  over  his  chest.  “  as  for  being  an  asshole;  it  depends  on  who  you  ask.  my  sister,  for  example,  might  be  in  agreement.  ”  smile  lifts  slightly,  shaking  his  head.

when a scoff had been his reaction to the mention of the future, a smug smile would have been his reaction to his question. what did he know about the future? oh, if he only knew about his ability. but telling about who he really was wasn’t smart. besides, hardly anyone just accepted the fact that they were talking to a god, so munin fought against the smile to keep the questions at a minimum. he kept the usual mask on his face when he nonchalantly shrugged his shoulders, keeping his eyes on the other one as he was still ready to react. “i may know a thing or two,” he answered vaguely, keeping a short pause before continuing. “but i’m talking from experience. living in the past is like going around in a circle. but of course, if you want to be that person… go ahead. you do you.” now his voice was slightly more provocative as with his last words he was mocking him — but the the words and the tone of voice were calculated decisions. it was a  t r a p  and he was testing him. 

fingers  curl  at  his  sides  at  the  tone  of  voice,  shoulders  tense  as  he  fights  off  every  instinct  telling  him  to  attack.  there  was  something  about  this  person  that  set  him  on  edge,  perhaps  the  way  he  was  so  calm  in  the  presence  of  someone  clearly  ready  to  snap.  “  that  is  helpful  advice.  ”  tone  is  flat,  barely  keeping  his  anger  at  bay.  “  i’ll  be  sure  the  bare  that  in  mind.  ”  slowly  his  fingers  release  from  the  fists  at  his  sides,  though  muscles  remain  tense.  “  someone  does  not  have  to  live  in  their  past  for  it  to  remain  having  a  tight  hold  over  them.  ”  voice  wavers  slightly  as  he  speaks,  trying  to  process  exactly  what  was  happening  here;  it  felt  like  some  kind  of  trap  he’d  sprung,  though  he  couldn’t  understand  why.

the gentle tenderness and care... deep yearning from the barest brush of skin... wanting to ask for more but being unsure... you spend a lot of time worrying about whether or not you will find love, and sometimes aren’t even sure if romance is something worth pursuing. you have spent so long being on your own, you simply struggle to picture yourself beside another person. perhaps you even secretly worry that you are too much for another person. it it important to not think of yourself as someone unlovable, as you are just as deserving of romance as any. however, it is also important to not place your value on relationships; you are a complete person on your own.

she waits,   more than willing to stand there with him all day.   her own feelings on hold,   shelved to be dealt with and processed later.   she’s always been good at that,   compartmentalizing and choosing when to face her emotions.   usually,   she’d talk them through with her brother,   but this is something she’ll process on her own at some point.   when his hand unfurls in hers,   she smiles softly,   tracing a circle on his palm with her index finger.   his comment makes the smile falter for a second,   but she quickly recovers it.   they each struggle in their own way;   even though she can name her own emotions and naturally recognize them in others,   she’s far from a model of emotional wellbeing.   “   don’t be so hard on yourself,   ”   she counsels,   tapping his palm to emphasize the words before letting go of it.   she’s about to make another suggestion to get his mind off of whatever had initially upset him when he apologizes again,   making her mouth go dry,   smile fading and eyes unfocusing.   a tangled mess of guilt and self-loathing rises to the surface,   but she shoves it back down with a shake of her head,   swallowing past the sour taste in her mouth.   he’s suffered ENOUGH,   he doesn’t need to bear the weight of her reactions   —   she deserved every bit of the accusation in his tone.   she will not make him feel bad for it.   “   you don’t have to apologize,   i know you didn’t,   ”    she replies,   taking a small step out of his reach.   summoning that smile back with some effort,   she asks,   “   alright,   how about some food?   ice cream?   milkshakes?   i’m pretty sure there’s a cash-only place on the edge of this town.   chocolate might help.   or at least the fresh air walking there.   ”

watching  as  she  struggles  with  whatever  he  had  brought  up  within  her  with  his  words,  a  small  frown  crossing  his  brow.  guilt  weighed  on  his  chest  for  even  speaking  them  to  her,  wishing  he  could  take  them  back.  gentle  sigh  escapes,  her  touch  only  helping  to  calm  him  further.  he  knew  they  both  struggled;  it  would  be  a  miracle  if  they  did  not,  but  there  were  times  where  he  found  himself  longing  to  know  just  what  passed  through  her  mind.  “  i’ll  try.  ”  words  uttered  softly,  swallowing  down  his  own  guilt  as  she  stepped  away,  summoning  a  slight  smile  of  his  own.  “  milkshakes  and  a  burger  sounds  pretty  good  about  now.  ”  enthusiasm  is  attempted,  though  falls  a  little  flat.  though  he  knew  the  fresh  air  would  bring  him  some  comfort,  still  much  preferring  to  be  outside.  “  are  you  sure  you’re  okay  ?  ”

why couldn’t he just leave ?   it’s what he wanted ,  wasn’t it ?  to get out ?  to be free of this torment for another night ?  why did he have to make this so much worse than it needed to be ?  heaving out a heavy sigh ,  he turns back around ,  dark eyes fixing onto his apprentice’s as he steps towards him .   “ yes ,  that’s it . ”   he repeats ,   tone cool and impassive ,  though his frustration soon begins to pool through as he keeps on .   “ what else do you want ,  zig ?  praise ?  a celebratory feast ?  another man to KILL ? ”  fingers clench at the thought of going through that again ,  eyes closing for a brief moment as if to block out the very scene in front of his eyes .    “ just go .  i’ll see you tomorrow . ”

standing  his  ground  as  the  other  man  steps  closer,  holding  his  gaze  despite  wanting  nothing  more  than  to  back  away.  studying  him  for  a  moment,  the  horror  of  what  he  had  done  once  more  seeping  into  his  mind.  a  sickness  burns  through  him  at  his  question,  jaw  tensing  as  he  tried  to  understand  why  he  would  possibly  want  any  of  that.  “  no.  i  do  not  want  any  of  that.  ”  words  ground  out  from  between  his  teeth,  nails  digging  deeper  into  his  own  hands.  how  was  he  supposed  to  handle  this  ?  how  could  the  other  man  consider  this  to  simply  be  just  another  day,  that  he  could  leave  and  this  would  all  be  left  behind.  a  shaken  breath  is  exhaled,  bringing  a  trembling  hand  to  his  temple,  only  to  stop  at  the  sight  of  scarlet  against  his  skin.  “  this  is  all  so  easy  for  you.  ”  words  breathed  before  immediately  regretting  them.  lips  press  together,  swallowing  thickly  as  he  now  took  a  step  away.  “  fine.  ”

accept it ?  she almost laughs at that .  “ yes ,  of course i accept it . ”   she comments , though she could probably think of a thousand better ways of putting it . “ why else would i be here ? ”  it took everything she had to prove herself to the knights .  she’s here because she wants to be ,  because she’s fought for it   —  not because of some mere fluke .  looking back towards him ,  a brow arches .  “ i couldn’t tell you . ”   she says .  “ but i suppose if you’re comparing the two of us ,  then yes .  having some good in your life ,  some light , ”  as he puts it ,  “ likely makes everything else far more difficult . ”  glancing ahead of her ,  a small smirk curves at the corners of her lips at his question .  “ i want everything . ”  she says plainly .  “ power ,  blood ,  control .  i want it all and i won’t stop until i’ve gotten it . ”

there  are  times  he  forgets  that  most  of  the  people  here  had  chosen  this.  chosen  to  shape  themselves  with  the  pain  and  suffering  of  others.  there  was  no  one  here  that  did  not  want  to  be;  only  him.  alone  in  this  suffocating  void  he’d  been  forced  into.  jaw  tenses,  already  sensing  he  had  said  too  much.  “  right.  because  everyone  that  is  here  wants  to  be.  ”  words  are  muttered  and  instantly  regretted.  “  difficult.  yes,  that  is  one  word  for  it.  not  necessarily  the  one  i  would  use  but.  ”  shoulders  lift  in  a  shrug,  before  tensing  once  more  at  her  admission.  “  how  very  ambitious  of  you.  hopefully  i’ll  be  far  out  of  your  way  by  the  time  that  happens.  ”
