god i love goyo i love heneral luna so much i regret zoning out during history class

yet at the same time i need to acknowledge the fact that their failed movements (and this bitch called aguinaldo) are a part of the reasons why i speak fluent english and get involved with american culture

idk. the movies make me think about the parts that the americans played in our history. how their rule in the country caused english to become an official language. how their manifest destiny fucked the country over until colonial mentality permeated every fucking aspect of our lives as filipinos. 

ewan. there are times when i feel shame for only being able to speak basic filipino, yet my mastery of the english language is often praised. nakakahiya–sinasabi ko na pilipino ako ngunit hindi ako bihasa sa sarili kong wika. 

i feel like i dont live and breathe for my country enough. i feel like im not doing enough. 

#wow this post really came for my life #yeah no it's true though #spanish and american colonization royally fucked over the philippines #coupled with the shortcomings of our leaders #who more often than not couldn't see past their own #short-sighted selfish ambitions #it was an 'offence' in my elementary school to speak in my native language #to encourage learning how to speak english better #and while that did give me an advantage #after we immigrated to canada because my grasp of english was better #the trade off is that i can't read or write in tagalog or either of my parents' dialects #i only know conversational tagalog but #i can't even sit and read essays and stories #of our authors and heroes without getting frustrated #because i can't understand the deeper words #stuff that never used to bother me as a child / teen #but the older i get the angrier / sadder i get thinking about it #anyway rant over

#mitford's bio is a good intro but it's definitely not the most #comprehensive one i've read #still i think it's worth it for the colored plates to reference from alone #also there's a painting here that really just throws me for a loop because #frederick william iii is already in it depicted with his father and grand uncle #i forget how close the generations are until i see stuff like that
