visible disabilities come with so many moments of shame, so many daily reminders that you are completely alien to the majority of people around you.

it's the way strangers say "im sorry, im sorry, im so so sorry" when they move slightly out of your way on the sidewalk.

it's the way they panic and babble at each other to move quickly, hurry up, get out of the way there's a wheelchair behind you.

it's how your friends' excitement for plans is dampened when you have to quietly remind them that you can't join in, can't go to that place, can't participate in that activity, and you know they feel so guilty afterwards for forgetting about you, but they don't want you to comfort them about it.

it's the embarrassment when the formal outing's venue is changed at the last minute to a building too narrow for your wheelchair to fit inside, and now the organisers are wringing their hands and coddling you because they can't believe they messed up so badly, you poor thing, will they ever be anything but horrible evil monsters in your eyes again.

it's the waiter at the restaurant asking if you're sure you can't use the stairs, not even if they hold your hand, to get up to your reserved seat when the elevator is broken, and having to explain that no you can't.

being visibly physically disabled means having to face able-bodied people's guilt, all day, every day, dealing with their emotions and their regrets because they fucked up and forgot about you, they left you out of something important, they're responsible for wasting your time and your energy and leaving you alone outside the lecture theatre taking notes through the door.

You can do everything right and still become disabled. Disability isn't a character flaw or a personal failure which can get blamed on the people who aquire one. It can happen to literally all of us at any time. There's no fairness involved

You know what? My disability does hold me back! I'm sick of pretending it doesn't because society only thinks we're worthy if we're actively trying to "overcome" our disabilities or that we "defy the odds". I'm sick of hearing "you can do anything you put your mind to" because that's just not true and is often invalidating of the struggles disabled people face.

I am worthy either way, regardless of whether I can contribute in a way that society deems acceptable or not.

The same applies to you! You are worthy if you can't drive, can't finish school, can't work a conventional job. You are worthy if you can't live on your own without help. You are worthy if you'll need assistance for the rest of your life. You are worthy, always.
