Mirabel wanted to point out that Shang wasn't a Magick either (at least, as far as she was aware, she didn't know him that well) and he still seemed much better-equipped than her for this whole thing. But Jasper was probably just trying to hype her up, to make her feel better despite not being a Magick. It wasn't like this was anything new for her.
"Uh- yeah, I hope so," she said. "Thanks, uh, I do appreciate that you believe in me and all."
Now let's please talk about Shang! she wanted to add. Or literally anyone else! Even if Mirabel wanted Jasper's approval, this was almost too much. Because now there were expectations to live up to.

The dice were gorgeous. Mirabel would have gotten them as a gift for anyone in her party in a heartbeat— they would especially complement Eilonwy's character, she thought.
But personally, she'd never really liked floral designs. Maybe it was something to do with her own stubborn desire to be completely different from Isabela, or maybe it was just a little too girly for her liking. (Nothing wrong with girly! Just not her thing).
"Oh, these are really pretty," Mirabel replied, because she did think so, even if they weren't quite for her. "I was thinking, though, I'd kind of love something that's more themed to my character? I play a barbarian, so if you have anything a little more, uh, themed like that, I guess... It's okay if not, though!"

Whenever people asked for good thrift recommendations, Mirabel automatically said From Farm to Table. Not just because she worked there and felt like it was her duty to (although that was, honestly, a part of it). It was also the most accessible thrift store, being located right on Main Street and carrying a lot of great options donated by Swynlake's wealthier residents.
But it wasn't the only one. Mirabel had been into thrifting long before when From Farm to Table existed. There were some other places she used to take the bus out to, returning home with shopping bags laden with secondhand pieces. It could be kind of fun to show someone that.
"From Farm to Table only opened a couple of years ago," Mirabel explained, like she was telling a secret. "But there a few places nearby I used to go to all the time. I can show them to you. There's this one place in NTO that I swear is, like, a time capsule from the 80s. And there's a church charity shop with the nicest ladies who run it. As long as you promise not to post them online, I really don't want them getting overrun by TikTok."

Mirabel nodded at the question about what to call her. She didn't care. The only reason she called Jasper "Mr. Badun" was because he seemed like a very serious, stern man, and she didn't want to offend him or assume they were on first-name terms.
She frowned at Jasper's comment about a "hidden talent." Her, being a Mundus, an asset? That didn't make any sense. She wanted to win despite her lack of magic, not because of it. Oh, she hoped she hadn't gotten some anti-Magick guy as a coach...
"Er- I'm not sure I understand," she admitted. "I don't think it will be a problem, I do intend to work hard to overcome it, but I'm not sure I would call it a hidden talent, either. With all due respect, sir."

Mirabel had never really thought about a career at the hospital. She wasn't the best at biology, so she'd never really looked into medical careers. But the way Tío Félix talked about it, it sounded like you didn't have to be, if you wanted to work there. She wasn't going to rule anything out, considering she still had no real idea of what she wanted to do with her life. So... why not, right?
"Oh- I mean, if that's something they do, actually, that could be really interesting. I like what I'm doing in the counseling office at Pride U a lot, but honestly, I just want to try out a bunch of different things. See what I really like, you know?"

Maybe that was why Maddy was so surprisingly easy to talk to. They came from different places, but similar worlds. They'd both grown up on islands, so very different from Swynlake.
"Oh- yeah, they do. Every year. It's a lot of fun. I think, like, one thing you should know about this town— people love an excuse to get dressed up," Mirabel explained, grinning. "Last year the theme was starry night. And, uh, yeah, I also thrifted my dress. Well, I kind of rewore a dress that I'd worn for Halloween, but it was originally thrifted. You can always find good stuff, because we get a lot of donations from previous years."
Put at ease by the change in topic, Mirabel almost forgot the circumstances that had led to this conversation in the first place entirely.

Mirabel smiled to herself as Ken began assessing the dress. So her prediction had been correct. Ken totally understood what Mirabel was talking about— in fact, he might even know better than Mirabel when it came to these things.
"Exactly," Mirabel agreed, relieved that they were on the same page. "I think we could shorten it, maybe, but I'm not sure how the proportions would turn out. And I think it would just change the spirit of the whole thing. I wonder if we just create a whole new skirt, but borrow the lace and the underskirts... I don't know, I feel like you have the eye for design here."
That wasn't just Mirabel being modest. She wanted the best for this dress. And, in her opinion, the best thing for the dress would be Ken's expertise.

Mirabel's responses for Ting-Ting's baby shower games
Text under the cut
Congratulations, Ting-Ting! I’m so happy for you and I’m sending all my best wishes for you and your baby. I don’t know if I have the best advice, considering I’ve never been a mum, but if you ever need to talk I’m always here to listen. I can imagine this brings up a lot of complicated emotions, happy ones of course but bittersweet ones too. Take it all in and never hesitate to reach out.

Being on time, Mirabel thought, was the least she could do. Considering how unimpressive she thought her brag sheet was (relatively strong, decent endurance, persistent attitude; no magic, not a very quick thinker, doesn't really know how to fight (?); get in better shape, make my family proud, challenge myself; and the last one- well, she didn't really know, but she was just here to try something new, she said).
Hopefully Mr. Badun— er, Jasper— wouldn't be too disappointed. At least he had Shang, too, who already seemed a lot more impressive.
"Yeah, of course. Um, nice to meet you both," Mirabel said, glancing between the two of them. They were both so tall. "Good idea, let's grab a table." She held out her brag sheet. "Uh, do you want this now, or..."

That story actually relaxed Mirabel a little bit. Like she was chatting with a friend instead of making weird small talk with the roommate of the girl whose bed she'd just woken up in. It sounded like working at a used bookstore wasn't all that different from a thrift shop, really— either way, you were helping people find new life in old things.
"Wow. Nothing quite as cool as that, but there are a lot of little moments that are nice. Like, we had a young mum come in the other day looking for some stuff for her daughter's birthday, she couldn't afford to spend a lot but I got to help her find some things in her budget that she was really excited about. Or- I mean, it's nearly prom season, so it's a lot of fun, helping people find the perfect dress or suit or whatever. Especially the kids. They get so excited."
Mirabel smiled fondly, thinking of the happy tears, the parents talking photo after photo. Especially the ones who didn't think they'd be able to find anything they'd like secondhand. From Farm to Table was magic like that, though. Mirabel believed that.

"Oh, I've got it," Mirabel said, slicing into the onion gingerly. "Just don't judge me for the tears, it's just the onion, I swear!" She laughed. Right on cue, the air filled with that pungent, stinging scent. It would be worth it later, though, when all the ingredients come together. "I get what you mean, though, Tío. About good-busy. I think it'd be cool to have a job where you're up on your feet, you know? And you can actually see the things you're doing making a difference."

Mirabel didn't know about that. Whether she actually remembered a lot about him. Maybe she was just projecting, or confusing the dream with real life. Maybe it was just wishful thinking. Mirabel knew she shouldn't get her hopes up. But she did anyway, that little spark burning in her despite all reason telling her otherwise.
"No. Just you," she admitted, taking a sip of her coffee. She wanted to ask more people. But she knew that she had to be careful. Things had calmed down at Casita lately, but it was a delicate balance, and it did often feel like things could fall apart at any moment. Mirabel didn't want to be the crack in the foundation. "Don't worry, I'm not going to go asking everyone. I just... I wish I knew what happened to him..."

The word bubble made Mirabel grin. She loved Devyn's magic, and not just for practical reasons— although, she imagined if she had the same powers, she would find them quite nerve-wracking. But there were some real upsides, like being able to punctuate your words with illustrations and stuff. Anyway, Devyn seemed to have all of it under control.
"Uh, it's just a regular DnD campaign, I thiiiink our DM has said something about Forgotten Realms and faerun? Does that matter at all? Sorry, I'm still pretty new at this," Mirabel admitted. "I was just looking for, like, the standard set with the seven pieces. And any cool designs you have."

Mirabel blanched. Wait a second. Maddy worked at Chapter Three? With Mamá?
Maybe Mirabel should have realized that by now, but she didn't go in Chapter Three very often, and if Mamá had ever brought her up, Mirabel had assumed she was talking about someone else (it was a pretty common name, after all). And look, Mirabel did not think that Maddy was going to mention this to her mother— she seemed to have a little more awareness than that, even if she seemed way less self-conscious than Mirabel.
But still! It was weird! This town was too freaking small.
"Oh, uh, yeah. Definitely," Mirabel stammered, trying to hide her alarm at that new fact. She took a bite of eggs— they were quite good. "I bet, uh, you get a lot of good stories. From both places."

Luisa wasn't that much older than Mirabel. She probably didn't remember that much more than her. But two years was a lot when you were a kid. And those years were so hazy to Mirabel, and it seemed like the more she tried to remember them, the harder it became.
She tried to imagine Tío Bruno telling stories— honestly, she just imagined her tío from the dream, but maybe looking a bit younger with a bit more hair.
"He was funny, right?" Mirabel asked, as though that might give her a clue as to whether her tiny inkling of hope could be real. "But really wise, too. Like, he gave good advice, but not in a way that made you feel bad."

Mirabel laughed. She didn't know enough about Star Trek to entirely comprehend what Félix was referring to, but she got the idea. "Wow. I mean, at least you're never bored, right?" Mirabel commented, finishing the tomato and reaching for an onion. She hated this part— she had never figured out how to avoid the tears.
