She hesitates more than she means to, nodding absently as she finds a way to press herself against him, face nestling into her shoulder so she can avoid saying anything else.

It wasn’t like she didn’t feel it. The homesickness. It had been a big change. Fast and unexpected. But she’d been pulled out of her life long before she’d ever even met Bucky. Wrenched away from the things she’d understood. Maybe she’d just gotten used to the flux of it. But here — well, it had been quiet. Quiet for the first time in what felt like ages. Calm. Her hands were healed now, the network of scabs she’d gained while scrying long since gone. And maybe there was a pang of guilt in having left it all behind, but the stability was nice even if she didn’t feel like she’d earned it.

Still, he was probably right. They couldn’t stay, not forever. The world wasn’t something you could permanently avoid.

“I dunno. I mean — we should, yeah.” She nods again, tucking herself in even closer. Like that would hold the inevitability of it all at bay. “My mom will love you, so…”

That was the easiest part of it all. The one thing she had no fear of. No hesitation, or question. It was everything else that felt … hard.

“I probably should have gone back before now anyway, I can’t — I mean, I haven’t really been much of a help to anyone.” Not that that was the point, really. And she does her best to side step it, any of the lingering guilt over leaving. So she smiles gently instead, pressing a kiss to his shoulder. “I don’t know how much more official we need to make it, but I’d like that…”

Their escape to Wakanda was always meant to be a temporary measure, a small stop on the way to something more permanent, ideally something safe for the both of them. No ghosts. No being tracked down. Just, normal. As normal as it'd get for them, at the very least. But it was coming up on a year now. Progress was being made, the Winter Soldier programming was well in hand - which he once again had two of thanks to the generosity of the king - but there was still no word of leaving and Bucky was getting antsy. For Liv as much as himself. Wakanda was practically paradise but it wasn't home, it wasn't greasy diners and the shitty weather he'd grown accustomed to over the years. Not once had he thought he'd miss it but homesickness wasn't something to be reasoned with. -- "Was thinkin'.. Considerin' you're plannin' on marryin' me, we gonna do the whole.. meetin' the parents thing? Your mom, I mean..?" It would be good for him to get a taste of that familiarity of home, even if only temporary - something to chase away the itch for it that seemed to have settled in his bones recently. Perhaps it would be good for Liv too, afterall despite staying in contact with her mom, it'd been a while since the two had been face to face. -- "We could go over, I'm sure it can be arranged safely if I talk through some details with Steve and y'know.. make the engagement official?"

One of the things I think about a lot is the fact that they ostensibly wrote Liv off of the show because she would be too easy for John to manipulate, but like ….

Idk, she knows John for like two days (in the midst of which she’s going through her own intense trauma) and still accurately manages to pinpoint his emotional triggers enough to save herself from his mistakes. Like she knows well enough not to beg for her own life on the roof because that won’t get her anywhere. But getting through to John DOES. Like — I dunno, she’s smart, and it’s not like she’s gullible, she just …. Trusts John. Which, arguably, is not an exceptionally good idea. But it’s not a weakness either.
