of course arthur has protected him before, lied for him - take arthur telling him to run when he was accused for sealing the seal for example. it's happened before. but i think this is the first time merlin so explicitly realises just how much arthur is willing to do, considering that he just hammered the guilt into him only a few moments ago. arthur has pretty much taken the responsibility without merlin asking. i wonder if, for him, it's comparable to everything he does with his magic. all these things arthur has not asked of him, that he does happily anyway. i wonder just how much it really means, how much and how different of a weight it puts on their dynamic.

It's a lot healthier to go for a daily walk than to sign up for a gym membership you won't be using because you hate that kind of exercise. It's a lot healthier to eat a frozen meal than to skip a meal because you were too tired to cook something healthy. It's a lot healthier to take a quick shower than to procrastinate an elaborate routine for days. Don't aim so high that you won't be hitting anything!

You completely misread what I wrote, so I'll try to be clearer.

I said that I don't know how fandom can appreciate that phrase so much because, to make it a good phrase, you have to take it out of context.

So do you really need Arthur to say this sentence out loud to know that he always believed that Merlin was the bravest person? Because I don't. I never took any of Arthur's offenses towards Merlin seriously and I always knew that Arthur loved Merlin and would do anything for him (we all saw that, I guess).

My post was never against Arthur and his way of showing (or lack of showing) affection, my post was to understand why the fandom loved this sentence so much as it is followed by one of the saddest things ever heard (and anyway those would have been Arthur's last words towards Merlin in Arthur's opinion, if that's not sad) and in fact has to take it out of context to give it value. I don't need to hear Arthur say that he always knew Merlin was brave, it was perfectly understandable, so I don't understand why fandom loves that line so much.

Then we could spend hours here discussing how Arthur shows affection, how he shows Merlin that he cares, but I think it would be hours wasted because we are all aware of that. It is difficult for Arthur to show affection (nothing strange given the family he grew up with) but that doesn't mean he doesn't show it in his own way.

But I repeat, this was not a post about Arthur, nor about how he shows he cares about a person, it was about why fandom takes a phrase and decontextualizes it.

Also, about your tags, #get these shit takes off my dash, #ffs its 2024 and people still dont understand arthur 1) I never forced you to read anything from me, you can black out my posts or not follow me 2) The passive-aggressive tone of your reply and the rudeness of the tags are completely uncalled for. I really hope you're not an adult because on this side of the screen stands another person who has simply expressed an opinion and who, unlike a fictional character, can be hurt by words. I don't give a damn because I'm an adult and I've been through people like you, but other people might get hurt. Think before you leave certain tags and reply like this to strangers who have done nothing to you.

I never really meant any of them" because if we take it out of context it may be a nice sentence, it may even be symbolic, but with what Arthur says afterward I find it just a cruel sentence, a sentence to say "I didn't think so, but I was wrong" something intended to hurt Merlin even more deeply. And I really don't understand how you can like it.

I have this Merlin crack prompt that i don't know if you will actually write but I'll mention it anyways , so we all know that merlin is the only one allowed in camelot to actually insult the king and get away with it , no matter what he does he gets away with it everytime because in Arthur defense that's MERLIN. but what if some knew knight or servant or whatever your choice of the character is , tries to insult the king thinking it's all fun and games because thats what he saw Merlin do , and then obviously everyone stares at the man with their mouth hanging open while Arthur is going between flabbergasted and furious. the man doesn't know what he did , untill he sees the consequences.

Sorry for taking ages to reply but I never received this notification. Unfortunately I'm not good at writing comic things but if you ever think of writing it I'll gladly read it because, even if they're not things I can write, I love reading them :)

Opinions on Merlin and why he's the best boy?

Merlin is my favourite character (and this is not obvious since I usually can't stand protagonists) but often, very often, I don't understand his decisions. Despite this, he is a guy who should be protected at all costs. Despite being surrounded by people he is always alone. As his only confidant, he has Gaius, who very often is not very helpful and discourages him.

To see him try to help Morgana but fail to do so because both Gaius and Kilgahrrah tell him not to is tragic. To see druids and people with magical powers tell him that he is losing himself and turning his back on his people is tragic. To see him slowly lose everyone and be even more alone after the prophecy he was told (as soon as he set foot in Camelot) has not been fulfilled is tragic.

He's the best boy because he has always put his heart into everything, he has always tried and hoped for a better future, despite all the horrible things that have happened to him he has always tried to keep a smile on his face and encourage others.

Merlin deserved so much more than what they gave him.
