Long thought to be completely chemically inert, xenon was the first noble gas to form a compound with another element. Neil Bartlett managed to mix platinum hexafluoride with xenon in 1962 to produce xenon hexafluoroplatinate thus proving the chemical reactivity of the noble gases.
