CHAPTER SIX : ABSENCE MAKES THE HEART GROW FONDER
Over the following days, Naeun found herself spending more time with Mingyu. At first, it was mostly Mingyu who would call and ask if he can come over, but after a while Naeun began calling and texting him every free moment she had. Her job didn’t leave a lot of time to make new friends, and although her colleagues were nice, they didn’t have a chance to meet up outside of work. That left Mingyu as her only friend in Seoul, so naturally he was the first person she reached out to when she didn’t want to be alone. Usually, he had no problem with it—until now.
‘Hey, are you ok?’ she texted him as soon as she got home from work. Mingyu hadn’t shown up to walk with her like he always did, and all of her texts and calls throughout the day have gone unanswered. She stared at her phone, waiting for it to ring, or at least to get a text back. One minute passed, then another, and another…
What was she doing? She wanted to smack herself for acting so desperate. He had a life of his own, he couldn’t spend every single moment with her. She should give him some space.
Five minutes have passed with her staring at her phone and contemplating, before she decided to get up and do something more productive with her time. Like, take that hot shower she had been dreaming of ever since her shift started this morning.
It was a long day. She was already feeling down without Mingyu’s bright smile and boundless energy at all times of the day. It had become routine for them to bicker and make fun of each other on the way to work, so this morning felt dull and boring without it. Then, when she arrived at the hospital, all hell broke loose. Thirty-seven people arrived at the E.R. at the same time, all suffering from severe burns after an explosion in the factory they worked at. Having to treat so many people while also trying to calm down the panicked family members that flocked to the hospital, had worn her out both physically and emotionally.
The hot water felt exhilarating, relaxing her muscles and washing away all the tension in her body. This was the moment she’d been waiting for all day, the one silver lining in this hellish shift—going home, taking a long shower, and stuffing her face with food until she couldn’t feel anything anymore.
Of course, her plan was forgotten as soon as she stepped out of the bathroom. The moment she heard the sound of a new notification, she raced to the living room, snatching her phone from its place on the couch. She had a new message from Mingyu:
‘I’m fine. Busy. Talk later.’
One message. One line. Not even a complete sentence. She knew that Mingyu didn’t owe her anything, but she thought she at least deserved a grammatically correct sentence. Nevertheless, she pushed her irritation aside to send another text:
‘Be safe.’
Message received. He left her on read.
She heard her stomach growl, reminding her that she didn’t eat anything today. But how could she eat when her stomach was twisting with worry and fear? She shook her head hard, as though she could shake all of her thoughts out, but it was no use. That one message left her head reeling with questions she wasn’t sure she wanted an answer to. What was Mingyu doing? What is ‘busy’ in gang terms? She desperately hoped that there won’t be another mortal wound for her to treat.

The next few hours went by frustratingly slow. Naeun tried to distract herself in many ways—eating, reading, pacing, screaming into the void—but her mind always went back to the same thing: what the hell is Kim Mingyu doing?
“Hey, Sejeong?” “Naeun!” Sejeong’s voice on the phone sounded as cheery as always, managing to bring a smile to Naeun’s face. “How are you? Have you change your mind and decided to come over?” “No, not tonight,” she told her. “Sorry.” “Oh, it’s fine. Why did you call?” “Well, uh, hypothetical question…” Naeun started. “Hypothetically, if there was someone that I’m very close with, like in contact with them 24/7, and then they suddenly disappear without a word. Should I start freaking out?” There was a long pause on the other end of the line. “Is this about Mingyu? The guy that you’re totally not dating?” “No!” she exclaimed. “It’s not about Mingyu. Or about me. Totally hypothetical, asking for a friend.” “Alright,” Sejeong drawled. “Well, hypothetically, maybe this hypothetical person is just busy.” “That’s what he said,” Naeun added. “Supposedly. Hypothetically.” “Then there’s your answer. Mingyu is just busy and you need to chill the fuck out.” “It’s not—OK, fine, this is about Mingyu.” She admitted. Sejeong laughed. “I knew it! You’re way too obvious, honey.” Naeun rolled her eyes. “Fine, so maybe I shouldn’t worry so much, but he’s been glued to my side for the past week, and his job is dangerous so I’m worried because he’s an idiot and—” “Naeun,” Sejeong cut her off. “breathe.” “But—” “Breathe.” She repeated more sternly. “How long has he been doing this kind of work?” “A while.” “And nothing happened yet.” The memories of their first meeting flashed before her eyes, and she winced. “He’s…still alive.” “Great! I’m sure he’ll stay that way for a while. He’s not a child, he can take care of himself.” Naeun let out a heavy sigh. “You’re probably right. I’m sorry for bothering you.” “It’s fine, sweetheart, I understand that you care about him…” Sejeong kept talking, but the only thing Naeun heard was the sound of the doorbell. She ran to the door, looking out through the peephole. “It’s him,” she said, almost giddy. Thankfully, Sejeong didn’t mind being ignored and cut off. “See? I told you he’s fine. Go kick his ass; I’ll see you tomorrow.” “Yeah, thanks Sejeong.”
It took her less than a second to hang up the phone and throw open the door. The sight of Mingyu standing in front of her, more or less uninjured, caused her shoulders to slump in relief. That is, until she remembered that she’s mad at him.
Mingyu raised his hand in a hesitant wave, giving her a sheepish smile in return for her intense glare. When he noticed her eyes focus on the burn on his palm, he quickly put it down. “Hi.” “Hi.” Naeun repeated, almost emotionless. “Hi. Hi? You made me worry for a whole day, and all you have to say is ‘hi’?” “Uh…” Mingyu was clearly expecting a warmer welcome. “I’m kind of scared to say yes.” “You should be!” she seethed. “Then no. My answer is no.” he said quickly. “Kim Mingyu, you are unbelievable!”
She kept yelling at him for at least half an hour, even after she had let him in and they settled on the couch. Surprisingly, he stayed silent and kept nodding and agreeing with her. She didn’t know if he really regretted it or he was just scared of her anger—it took a lot to make her mad, so when she finally exploded it could be terrifying. His tactic worked, however. Slowly, she felt her anger fade away, being taken over by relief so strong that it made her burst into tears.
That seemed to freak Mingyu out even more. “What’s going on?” he asked frantically. “I’m sorry, alright? You’re absolutely right and I’m so sorry.” Naeun shook her head, wrapping her arms around him in a tight hug. “I’m just glad that you’re OK, dumbass.”
Mingyu didn’t answer, just hugged her back even tighter. He’d never tell her that she was right to worry, that he really was in danger, instead just whispering, “Yeah, me too.”

CHAPTER FIVE: SAFE, SAFER, SAFEST
For a whole minute, all Naeun could do was stare at Mingyu in disbelief. “I- you…” she tried to speak. “…What did you say?” “Will you go out with me?” Mingyu repeated nonchalantly, as though it was the easiest question in the world.
And if he were in literally any other profession, it would be. However, as much as she started to like him, his life was a very dangerous one. Hell, their very first meeting involved her saving his life after he had been stabbed! “No,” Naeun finally replied as firmly as she could. Mingyu was clearly unprepared for that answer. “Why? I thought we actually got closer the past few days.” “We did,” she admitted. “Which was a mistake. You’re in a fucking gang, Mingyu. Just a few minutes ago you said that someone might target me because I helped you, what do you think will happen if we’ll start dating?” “I’ll protect you,” Mingyu tried to reassure her. “Why do you think I walked you to work and back today? I won’t let anybody hurt you.” “No one will have any reason to hurt me in the first place, if we’re nothing but strangers.” Mingyu remained silent. Trying to put an end to this conversation, she opened the door to her apartment and was about to step inside, when Mingyu grabbed her arm. “Wait,” he said. “Just answer one question. Please.” Naeun let out a sigh. “What is it?” “Do you like me?” Naeun sputtered. “What kind of question—” “I need to know,” he insisted. “If I was just a normal person, if we met under normal circumstances, would you have liked me? Would you have dated me?” “Yes,” Naeun said softly. “As annoying as you are…if it weren’t for the danger, I would have said yes.” Mingyu nodded, letting her go. “Then give me a chance to prove that I can protect you.” “Mingyu—” “One chance, Naeun,” he cut her off. “I really do think there’s someone who saw us, one of our rivals. Just give me a few weeks to make sure you’re safe.” “And after that?” “After that, I’ll be gone,” Mingyu promised. “If you don’t want me in your life, then I’ll never bother you again. But for now, forget about the dating thing. Let’s just be friends.” Naeun considered his offer, her lips pursed and eyebrows furrowed. She had a feeling that she was going to regret this. “Fine,” she agreed. “Let’s be friends, for now.” Mingyu instantly relaxed. “Great! So, text me tomorrow before work, I’ll walk with you.” “Isn’t it too much trouble to go everywhere with me?” He shook his head. “I actually like hanging out with you, even if it’s just for fifteen minutes. And since Seungcheol won’t let me out on missions yet, I have nothing better to do.” “Alright, so I guess I’ll just send you my schedule,” she realized that she was just standing with her door open, halfway inside her apartment. “Do you want to come in?” “Really?” Mingyu raised his eyebrows in surprise. “I didn’t think you’d want me in your house.” “We’re friends now, right?” she said. “We can do friend stuff, have a movie night. And maybe eat tons of food since I haven’t eaten at all today.” He grinned. “It’s a date.” “No, it’s not.”
↠ ↠ ↠ ↠ ↠
Naeun came to work the next day with a smile on her face.
Her and Mingyu spent the previous afternoon watching movies and making fun of the cliché scenes, not worrying about a thing. It was nice to stop worrying about everything for once, and to just act like friends. Although the thought of this being only temporary kept nagging at her, she did her best to push it to the back of her mind for now.
“Good morning,” she greeted Yeonsoo, who got in a minute after her. “You’re in a good mood today,” he observed. “Let’s hope it stays that way, I have a feeling it’s going to be a long day.” Naeun rolled her eyes. “And I thought that I was pessimistic,” she said. “By the way, where’s Sejeong?” “She’s coming in late, some kind of family emergency or something.” “So it’s just us and Yujin for now?” she asked. “We’ll make it work, don’t worry.”
The day went by slowly, with only a few people coming in to the ER, most with a broken bone or a high fever. The nurses took care of them quickly and efficiently, while also checking up on the hospitalized patients. “Hello, Mr. Lee,” Naeun entered the room, checking the patient’s chart. “How are you feeling?” “Naeun, it’s good to see you,” the elderly man smiled. “I’m a bit weak and tired, but they said that the surgery went well.” “That’s great!” she said while checking his blood pressure and writing down the numbers. “It seems that your body is accepting the transplant well, you’ll be back home soon.” After doing a quick checkup, she left his room with lifted spirits. It felt good to see someone who was close to death healing and getting better, especially if she helped him. Knowing that she could save someone’s life made all of the long shifts and sleep deprivation worth it.
After finishing her rounds, she headed towards the reception to see if any new patients came in. Yeonsoo, who was already standing there and chatting with another nurse, Yujin, waved her over. “Naeun, are you busy?” he asked. “I just finished my rounds,” she replied. “What’s up?” “The patient in 218 wants to talk to you.” “Me?” her eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Yujin was the one who took care of the patient, and she had never had any interaction with him. “Why?” Yujin shrugged. “I don’t know,” he said. “He said it was urgent, but he won’t tell me what it is.” “Alright…” she said, unsure. “I’ll go there right now.”
↠ ↠ ↠ ↠ ↠
The moment she opened the door to room 218 and saw who was inside, she was tempted to turn around and leave. Unfortunately, her body chose this moment to freeze, making her stand rooted in the doorway, staring at the man in shock. What was he doing here, so far from home? How did he know she was there? And why, for the love of god, couldn’t he keep one goddamn promise?
“Hi, Naeun,” he at least had the decency to look guilty. “Long time no see.” His words broke her out of the shock. “What the hell, Hyunwoo?” “I know, I promised to never get you involved—” “So what are you doing here?” Hyunwoo sighed, lifting his arm which had a cast around it. “I got into a fight. I guess I passed out, so someone brought me here.” Naeun closed her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose, trying to stay calm. “Who did you manage to piss off this time?” “Well, it’s a funny story…” he smiled sheepishly. “Seventeen.” “SEVENTEEN?” she burst out. “What’s wrong with you? Do you have a death wish?” “Do you?” She paused. “What are you talking about?” “I know, Naeun,” he told her. “One of my men saw you and Kim Mingyu together. You’ve been helping him?” “He was injured and needed help,” she said. “I can’t exactly turn down a patient.” “No, but you can tell him to stay away from you after you’re done. Don’t you know how dangerous it is? Is that not why you left us…left me?” Naeun’s expression hardened. “I left because you got my parents killed.” “Look, Naeun, I’m sorry.” Hyunwoo didn’t look the least bit sorry. “You know that it’s part of the job, that’s what you signed up for when we started dating—” “Are you serious?” she snapped. “You promised to protect us! You said that you wouldn’t let anyone get anywhere near them, and then you used them as bait!” “We all lost someone that day,” he yelled back. “I lost twenty men in one night!” “They knew what they were doing,” she told him. “My parents didn’t know about any of this. They didn’t stand a chance.” Hyunwoo sighed. “So, this is your solution? Leaving me, running off to the other side of the country? Joining another gang?” “Hyunwoo, did you honestly expect me to stay with you after what you did?” she asked. “You promised to protect me and my parents, and you failed. You promised to never contact me again, and you broke that promise, too. You have done nothing but hold me back and cause me pain, and I will never go back to that.” With that, she turned around and left. However, just before she closed the door, she threw one last sentence over her shoulder. “At least Mingyu never lied to me.”
↠ ↠ ↠ ↠ ↠
Naeun stormed off, desperate to find a quiet place where she could calm down. Why is it that gang members just keep finding their way into her life? Is she a magnet for trouble or something? “Naeun!” she heard someone calling for her. “Hey, Naeun, wait!” She stopped so suddenly that the person crashed into her. “Careful,” she recognized Sejeong’s voice, but didn’t turn to face her. “Are you alright?” “I’m fine,” her voice was quiet. “Don’t worry.” Sejeong grabbed her shoulders and turned her around. “Of course I’m going to worry when you cry, silly.” Naeun raised her hand to wipe her cheek, realizing it was wet. “I’m okay, really. I, uh, met my ex. Brought up bad memories.” “The one who told you to choose between him and your career?” Sejeong asked softly, rubbing her back. She shook her head. “Another one. We broke up three years ago, before I moved to Seoul. He…” she choked up. “He ruined my life. Seeing him again is like a nightmare…” She burst out in tears. Sejeong immediately pulled her into a hug, whispering reassurances into her ear. “It’s going to be alright,” she said. “He can’t hurt you anymore.” Sejeong didn’t let her go until her sobs quieted and turned into sniffles. Naeun wiped the remaining tears from her eyes. She probably looked like a mess, with a red face and tear streaks on her cheeks, but crying and letting out her feelings had lifted the weight off her chest and allowed her to breathe. “Naeun, I want you to know that I won’t let him hurt you,” Sejeong said seriously. “Mingyu won’t let him hurt you.”
Mingyu.
Funny how those six words made her feel safer than she ever felt before.

CHAPTER FOUR: NOT A COUPLE
Naeun was done.
The conversation she had with Mingyu had left her feeling completely exhausted. Her attempt to tell him that she wanted him out of her life had somehow made him think that he had a chance with her. Seriously, how did his mind work? Was his brain just a roulette wheel that he would spin every time he needed to provide a reaction or a response?
Naeun made sure to do a few calming breathing exercises before she left her apartment the next morning, knowing that she’d have to deal with Mingyu today; And sure enough, she ended up colliding with him just as she exited the building.
“Hey, careful!” Mingyu chuckled, managing somehow to keep both of them from falling over while also not dropping the coffee cups in his hands. “You don’t want to have to take care of me again, do you?” “I think I’ll leave it to the members, next time.” She rolled her eyes. “What are you doing here? It’s not even 6 a.m. yet.” “I got coffee,” he handed her one of the cups. “Figured you’d need it, since your shift starts so early.” “Thanks.” She took it from him and started walking, Mingyu trailing after her looking a lot like a lost puppy. “Why are you following me?” “I’m not following you, I’m walking you to work.” “Why?” “To be nice. Can you slow down a bit? I’m kind of tired.” “No.” Her coldness didn’t deter him, and he just chuckled as he struggled to keep up with her hurried pace. “It’s alright, I know we didn’t have the best start,” he said. “But I’m not as bad as you think.” Stopping at a crosswalk just across from the hospital, she turned around to face him, an irritated look on her face. A part of her wanted to be nicer to him and let him into her life, and if he had literally any other job she probably would have. She had promised her mother that she would stay out of trouble, live a normal and happy life, and breaking that promise was the last thing she wanted to do.
“You’re in a goddamn gang, Mingyu,” she snapped. “How can there be anything good about you? Do you really think your good looks and cute charms are going to impress me?” As usual, Mingyu seemed to only have heard one part of that sentence. “You think I’m good looking? I’m cute?” “You know, if you smile any wider it’s going to look really creepy.” “Hey, you can’t pretend you didn’t say I’m good-looking!” Naeun nearly ran across the road as soon as the light turned green, eager to get to the hospital and away from Mingyu. “Oh, look,” she said as she got to the entrance. “Looks like we’re here.” Mingyu had a strange look on his face, almost like he was disappointed. “Okay, I get it, you don’t want me to bother you so early in the morning.” He paused, and after a few seconds asked, “Do you mind if I walk you home after work?” Naeun sighed. “Mingyu…” “Please?” Okay, this was unfair. He was giving her puppy-dog eyes, trying to look cute. How was she supposed to say no to that? “Why do you like me so much?” she asked. “We’ve only known each other for a week. You don’t know anything about me.” He hesitated. “Alright, don’t freak out, okay?” he told her. “I’m not here just because I like you, even though I really do. I want to make sure that no one is following you or trying to hurt you.” “What? Why would—” her eyes widened. “Does anyone know that I’ve been helping you?” “We’re not sure,” he explained. “Which is why Seungcheol, our leader, told me to watch over you, just for a few days.” Naeun just stared at him, shocked, all kinds of morbid scenarios running through her mind. What if someone did see her when she came over to Seventeen’s house? What if they wanted to hurt her or her family? “Fine,” she eventually said. “Fine?” Mingyu asked, confused. “Fine, you can walk me home,” she clarified. “My shift ends at two o’clock, don’t be late.”
  ↠  ↠  ↠  ↠  ↠
The hectic shift provided a much-needed distraction for Naeun. She spent nine hours running around taking care of the patients that swarmed the ER, which left her with no time to think about Mingyu or Seventeen or the possibility of her being targeted because of them.
“What’s gotten into you today?” Sejeong asked, amused. It was nearing the end of their shift, and as the second shift workers came in, they finally got a moment to breathe. Naeun and Sejeong had collapsed onto the chairs in the waiting room with heavy sighs the moment they saw their replacements walking through the door. Had it not been for the nurse’s uniform, the two would have been mistaken for patients with their ruffled appearance and exhausted faces.
“What do you mean?” Naeun asked. “You’ve been so focused on work that you didn’t even notice Yeonsoo and I talking to you and telling you to take a break,” Sejeong chuckled. “Is everything alright?” Naeun’s face flushed red in embarrassment. “Yeah, sorry. I’m fine.” “Are you sure?” Her friend persisted. “You’re not, maybe…trying to bury yourself in work to avoid thinking of something?” “What?” Naeun raised an eyebrow. “What exactly do I have to avoid?” “I don’t know,” Sejeong drawled out. “How about the cute guy at the entrance that’s been trying to get your attention for the past five minutes?”
Naeun shot up from her seat, scanning the area until her eyes landed on the tall form of the guy that she was doing her best to forget. Mingyu waved at her excitedly, a bright smile on his face.
“Damn it,” she muttered. “I forgot he was supposed to walk me home.” She immediately realized she should not have said that, when Sejeong jumped up from her seat with wide eyes and an even wider grin. “Oh my god, Naeun!” she screeched almost accusingly. “You said that you don’t have a boyfriend!” “I don’t,” Naeun tried to calm her down. “He’s just some guy I met who won’t leave me alone. He thinks we’re friends, for some reason.” “Some guy that could be a boyfriend?” Sejeong suggested playfully. “Honestly, I wish my husband was this happy to see me.” “He’s not my boyfriend, and he never will be,” Naeun snapped. “He’ll be out of my life soon.”
She stomped towards Mingyu, an irritated look on her face. “Why the hell do people think we’re a couple?” she muttered, more to herself than to him. Mingyu offered her a hand, which she reluctantly took after seeing him make a cute face at her again. Damn, he’s really using his puppy-like face against her, and it’s working. “Admit it,” he told her as they walked out of the hospital. “We would make an adorable couple. Me, with my ‘cute charms’, you with your grumpiness—“ “I am not grumpy!” He laughed. “Come on, you know you are.” He reached over with his free hand and pinched her cheek. “Grumpy little goblin.” She slapped his hand away. “Stop it,” she whined. “I’m tired. I want to go home and sleep until tomorrow.” Mingyu laughed softly again, and a comfortable silence ensued while they walked.
Naeun’s mind was filled with conflicting thoughts. She couldn’t deny that she liked being around Mingyu, as annoying as he could be. Even something as simple as walking home with him made her relax and completely forget about her difficult day at work. But she also knew now that, with all his flirting and teasing, he only really stayed around because he needed to make sure she’s safe; Because his leader told him to watch over her. After all, it is his fault she might be in danger now, and if she got any more involved with this whole gang business, she’ll end up getting hurt.
Noticing that her hand was still holding his, she hesitantly let go, ignoring his pout. Her head hurt. She didn’t want to think about this anymore, she didn’t want to have to fight with herself like this. She wanted Mingyu to stop acting like he was interested in her, to just do his job and get out of her life.
Mingyu, apparently, had an entirely different idea in mind.
“You know,” he said quietly just before she went into her apartment. “I lied to you this morning.” Naeun frowned. “What are you talking about?” “Seungcheol didn’t ask me to watch over you,” he admitted awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck and avoiding her gaze. “I practically begged him to let me do it.” “Why?” “It’s true that I thought someone saw us, and that you might be in danger,” he explained. “But I mostly wanted an excuse to be around you.” “You want to be around me?” she repeated. “Why?” “Because I like you,” Mingyu said simply. “I want you to go out with me.”

CHAPTER THREE: HOUSE CALL
The rest of the week was, thankfully, pretty boring. Naeun quickly got used to working while tuning out Sejeong’s seemingly endless chatter. She liked her, but the older woman had so much energy that it was hard to keep up with her. “What about you, Naeun?” Sejeong asked, taking a break from talking about her beloved husband’s achievements. “Do you have a boyfriend?” “No,” Naeun replied without looking up from the patient’s chart. “Mrs. Kang, how are you feeling?” “I feel a lot better,” the woman was busy putting on makeup, although Naeun wasn’t sure where she was planning to go while connected to all those tubes and machines. “You look better,” she told her. “You were overworked and dehydrated, but you should be able to go home in a few days.” “Can’t I go now? I’m needed at the office- “ Sejeong shook her head and put her hand on Mrs. Kang’s shoulder, stopping her from getting up. “The doctor said you need to rest, so rest.” “And don’t even think of going back to work the moment you leave the hospital,” Naeun added. “Unless you want to come back here again.” As soon as they left Mrs. Kang’s room, Sejeong spoke up again. “So, about that boyfriend…” Naeun laughed. “You mean the nonexistent boyfriend who I spent my nonexistent free time with?” “Come on, there must be someone! Or there was someone. There’s no way a cute girl like you never had a date.” “I had dates,” Naeun shrugged. “And I had a boyfriend. We broke up a year ago.” “Why?” “He complained that my education and career are taking up all of my time. He wanted me to choose between him and nursing,” she told her, rolling her eyes. “So I told him he knew where the door is, and to come back if he ever decides to grow up.” Sejeong whistled and laughed. “Wow, I wish I could’ve seen his reaction.” Naeun grinned. “He looked like I punched him or something. He packed his things, threw a tantrum and slammed the door.” Shaking her head, she added, “Good riddance.” “Yeah, who needs men?” “Sejeong, you’re married.” “Who needs men other than Subin?”
↠ ↠ ↠ ↠ ↠
Naeun’s favorite day had to be Saturday, her day off. Working odd shifts had messed up her sleep schedule and left her exhausted, so she was looking forward to staying in bed the entire day. Nothing in the world could make her leave her house today.
Well, nothing except an annoying, irresponsible gang member.
“Jeonghan, he better be dying if you’re calling me on my day off,” her attempt to sound angry was interrupted by a loud yawn escaping her mouth. What time was it? A quick glance at the clock that read ’11:42AM’ made her plant her face onto the pillow. It was way too early, considering she went to bed at 4am. “I’m sorry, Naeun, but he won’t listen to me,” Jeonghan’s soothing voice would have made her fall asleep if he hadn’t mentioned him. Just the thought of Kim Mingyu made her want to hit something. She had been texting Jeonghan all week. As promised, he kept her updated on Mingyu and taking care of him according to her orders. But as Naeun quickly found out, Mingyu didn’t like having to lay in bed and do nothing, and he was constantly trying to sneak out. Jeonghan told her about Mingyu falling and hitting his head a few days ago, worrying that he might have brain damage, but Naeun assured him that he needed a brain for that. “What did the idiot do now?” her voice was muffled by the pillow. “He wants to remove his stitches.” “Nah.” “Naeun, he said if you don’t come and remove them, he’ll do it himself.” Of course he would. Naeun considered her options. She could let Mingyu suffer from his own bad choices, which might lead to her having to stitch him up again… or she could give up a few hours of sleep, remove his stitches, and never hear from him again. “Naeun?” Jeonghan asked. “Did you fall asleep again?” “I wish,” she muttered. “Fine, text me the address. I’ll be there as soon as I can.” Jeonghan quickly thanked her and hung up, probably running after Mingyu again.
With a whine, Naeun sat up and rubbed her eyes, wincing when her bare feet touched the cold floor. She took her time getting ready, making sure that her skirt had no wrinkles on it and her black hair fell in perfect waves down to her shoulders. It wasn’t so much that she loved dressing up (although she definitely did), as it was the need for petty revenge; Mingyu was the reason she gave up her precious sleep on her day off, so she was going to make him wait as long as possible. Grabbing her phone, she saw a message from Jeonghan with their address. It was close, only a few blocks away, so she could walk there. She thought of asking if they had a first-aid kit, but decided to just grab the medical kit she always had at her apartment. As Naeun was heading for the door, her phone buzzed with a new message:
Unknown number ‘It’s Mingyu. Where are you? I have to get these things out.’
Naeun ‘I literally woke up an hour ago, let me breathe. I’m on my way. And tell Jeonghan that he’s dead for giving you my number.’
Her phone buzzed again not ten seconds later but she decided to ignore it, choosing to focus on all the ways she could kill Jeonghan.

A small part of her was surprised to see that, at least from the outside, Seventeen’s house looked completely normal. It was an ordinary house three stories high, looking like it belongs to a middle-class family and not to a gang. She kind of expected security guards, cameras and scary old buildings, not a well-kept garden and a picket fence. In fact, the only thing that indicated the place belonged to Seventeen was the gun that was pointed at her face the moment the door opened.
Naeun huffed in annoyance. “Is it my face? Is there something about my face that makes everyone want to shoot me?” The man didn’t seem amused. “Who are you? Why are you here?” “Jeonghan didn’t tell you?” she asked. “I’m here to stop Mingyu from performing a minor surgery on himself.” The man lowered the gun. His glare was immediately replaced with a shy smile. “Oh, so you’re Naeun?” he invited her inside. “Sorry about that. We don’t usually get visitors.” “So it’s not my face?” He laughed. “No, your face is fine. The prettiest face I’ve seen in a while.” Naeun smiled at that, her cheeks turning red. “Well, seeing how accident prone Mingyu is, you’ll probably get to see this pretty face quite a bit.” “I’m definitely going to stop complaining about him, then.” The way he was looking at her and standing so close to her was making her brain go haywire. He was definitely one of the most good-looking men she’d ever met. His brown hair was messy, like he just got out of bed, but it made him even more handsome, and his cheekbones were so sharp she could cut her hand touching them. “So cute,” he reached out and softly pinched her cheek. “You’re so red.” She stepped away from him, covering her face. “Stop that,” she scolded playfully. “I’m here to take care of your friend, not to flirt with you.” “Why can’t you do both?” he asked before shrugging his shoulders. “Never mind, his room is upstairs. I’ll show you.” Thankfully, he kept his distance from that moment on. Naeun wasn’t particularly shy, but she couldn’t handle people being too close to her. “This is his room,” they stopped before one of the many doors on the second floor. “I’d go in, but he’s been whining all week and I’m kind of tired of it.” “He’s such a baby,” Naeun commented, making him laugh.
She stepped into the room and was immediately bombarded with questions. “There you are! What took you so long? Do you live on the other side of the country? Can I finally get these stupid stitches off?” Naeun turned back to give the flirty man in the doorway a tired look. “She’s here to help, Mingyu,” he scolded him. “Can you at least be polite?” “Like you’re any better, Jun.” Mingyu shot back. “Is flirting with everything that moves called ‘being polite’?” “I do not—” “Naeun,” Mingyu turned to her. “He started flirting with you the moment you walked in, didn’t he?” “Uh, what?” was all Naeun could manage to say, a little taken aback by the slight jealousy in his tone. Jun rolled his eyes. “Ignore him, Naeun. He’s just pissy because he wasn’t allowed to go on any missions all week.” With that, Jun shut the door, just in time to avoid being hit by a flying pillow.
When Naeun and Mingyu were finally left alone, an awkward silence set over the room. She looked around, trying to avoid his gaze. The room wasn’t too big, a desk and a large closet being the only furniture other than the bed. The walls were painted light blue with a few photos and posters on them, and shelves packed with action figures. Mingyu was laying on the bed, alternating between looking at her and the carpeted floor. It seems like he wasn’t sure how to start the conversation, either. He seemed confident when he was with the other members, but now that it was just the two of them, he suddenly became quiet. Naeun cleared her throat. “So,” she said. “How are you feeling?” “I feel a lot better,” he answered. “Almost no pain. Just the stitches are really annoying.” “Well, they kept you from bleeding to death,” she stepped closer to him and motioned for him to lift his shirt. “So I wouldn’t call them ‘annoying’.” “Well,” Mingyu mimicked her tone, smiling when she glared at him. “I’m not bleeding anymore, am I? So can you take them out, please?” Naeun inspected the wound. It seemed to have healed up nicely, although it would definitely leave a scar. Rummaging through her medical kit, she began working on removing the stitches, this time with little to no complaints from Mingyu. “There you go,” she said when she was done. “It will leave a scar, but maybe it’s a good reminder to be more careful.” “Thank God,” Mingyu let out a relieved sigh. “Maybe Jeonghan will finally stop yelling at me.” “Thank me,” Naeun grumbled. “I’m the one who did all of the hard work.” He chuckled, ruffling her hair. “Of course, thank you for not killing me even though you really wanted to.” “I’ll do it if you touch my hair again,” she said as she tried to fix the mess he made, but her tone wasn’t as harsh anymore. He could be nice when he wasn’t whining. Mingyu got up, taking her hand. “Come on, I’ll walk you home.”
Naeun tried to protest, but Mingyu insisted on walking her all the way to her apartment. He couldn’t walk around a lot this week, and he had to get out of the house for a bit before he went crazy. They chatted a bit on the way, Naeun making sure to steer the conversation away from gang stuff. She might not dislike Seventeen as much as she did before she met them, but she still wanted nothing to do with them. She needed a safe, quiet life. Which is why, when they got to her door, she told Mingyu that she never wanted to see them again.
“I’m sorry,” she said. “You’re not all bad, but I have a feeling you’ll only bring me trouble and I don’t need that.” Mingyu frowned. “We really like you, you know?” he told her. “And I thought you liked Jun…” he trailed off. “Jun?” Naeun raised an eyebrow. “I mean, he’s nice, and handsome, but I don’t like him that way. I could never fall in love with a gang member.” Mingyu’s face lit up. “You don’t like Jun?” “Why are you so excited about that?” she shook her head. “I don’t like you either. Like I said, I can’t be with— where are you going?” Mingyu was already getting in the elevator, a huge smile on his face. “I’ve got to go, but I’ll see you tomorrow!” “You most definitely won’t!” she yelled. “Did you hear a word I’ve said? Mingyu!” It was pointless, as the doors of the elevators closed and he was gone. Naeun hit her head against the wall, completely exasperated.
What is going on in Kim Mingyu’s mind?

Hi! I’m sorry, but there won’t be a new chapter of Stitches this week, since I’m really sick and can’t get myself to write, but I’ll try to post two chapters as soon as I get better!
On another note, I was thinking of maybe also doing reactions/scenarios, would anyone be interested in that? I’d mostly write for BTS, EXO, Seventeen and NCT, maybe for a few girl groups too.
Hope you all have a great week, and thank you so much for liking my story!! ❤

CHAPTER TWO: DO YOUR JOB
“I’m sorry, what?” Naeun demanded, though her voice wasn’t as strong as she’d hoped. “What work? I’m not helping a gang!” “Of course you are,” Hoshi said, casually putting his gun against her head. She froze. “Listen, I literally graduated nursing school like two weeks ago, I- “ “If nursing school hasn’t taught you how to take care of a bullet wound, then what was the point of attending?” “Besides,” Jeonghan said. “Can you really let a person die? Don’t you have morals? A conscience?” “I do,” she snapped. “But it seems that you don’t.” He shrugged. “Then help him.”
Naeun hesitated. She glanced from the door which she desperately wanted to run out of, to the man who was lying unconscious and bleeding to death on the metal table. Damn it, she really couldn’t let him die, no matter how evil he could be. “Fine,” she eventually said. “But I’m going to have to get a few things.” “Absolutely not.” The youngest, Dino, blocked the door. “This is a morgue, you imbecile. It doesn’t have equipment to treat living people.” Naeun didn’t know where this sudden surge of courage came from, but she desperately hoped it wouldn’t get her killed. “So, unless you want to take him to the E.R. and explain to the nurses there how he got that wound, I’m going to get what I need to treat him. And why the hell is no one applying pressure to his wound?” she threw a nearby cloth at Hoshi, who barely caught it before it hit his face. Were they new at this? Dino looked at Jeonghan, who nodded, before reluctantly stepping aside. Naeun pushed past him- which may have been petty, but she didn’t like kids who thought they knew her job better than her. “Wait,” Jeonghan called out before she could leave. “I’d just like to remind you that even if you escape or tell anyone about this, we’d find you easily- and you won’t like what we’ll do.” Her eyes widened as she quickly replied, “I’m not going to do anything. I’ll be back in five minutes.” With that, she ran out of the room.

As she was heading to get the supplies she needed, she ran into Yeonsoo- quite literally. He grabbed her arm to steady her as she stumbled back. “Careful,” he laughed, surprised. “Are you alright?” “Of course,” her voice was at least two octaves higher, her nerves coming back and hitting her full-force. She had to be quick, but she also couldn’t raise any suspicion as to what she was doing. Lying was not one of her (few) talents. “Is it time to go home yet?” “Yeah, I’m headed out now. Are you coming?” She shook her head, already walking away. “You go ahead. There’s something I forgot to do, I’ll leave soon.” “Okay, see you tomorrow!” he called after her, a bit confused, as she rounded the corner and disappeared.
Throwing open drawers and cabinets, she rummaged through them and probably made quite a mess but it was the furthest thing from her mind at the moment. She quickly gathered the sterile equipment, making sure she didn’t forget anything, and made her way back to the morgue. The few people who were out in the corridor gave her startled looks when she ran past them, and she kept muttering apologies the whole way back, even when there were no more people to run into.

Back in the morgue, she saw Hoshi keeping the now red cloth pressed to the wounded man’s abdomen, with Jeonghan and Dino next to them looking at the wound in concern. They all jumped when she stormed inside, instinctively reaching for their guns before realizing is was her. “Move,” she commanded. Her disheveled look and stern voice made them obey instantly. Standing near the operating table, she quickly unbuttoned his shirt and assessed his condition. It was clearly a stab wound, and not a very deep one at that, but it could be life-threatening if left untreated. Grabbing a clean cloth, she cleaned the gash carefully with water and antiseptic. She felt a sudden calmness take over her. The situation she found herself in was scary and dangerous, having a gang member’s life depend on her. But she was completely in her element- a nurse helping a patient. This is what she dreamed of doing ever since she was a kid, and although she didn’t quite imagine it this way, it was her job and she was going to get it done. While she worked, the man suddenly started stirring. “You’re awake?” she asked him. The man looked dazed. “I- uh, yeah…who-?” “My name is Naeun, I’m a nurse and you’ve been stabbed in case you haven’t noticed.” She informed him. “Now, I’m going to have to stitch this up. It would’ve been better if you were unconscious, but I don’t have any sedatives I can give you right now.” “It’s fine,” he said. “Just do it.” She rolled her eyes. Typical gang member, thinking he’s tough. “It’s going to hurt like hell, but I’ll try to make it quick. Hoshi, Jeonghan, hold him so he doesn’t move.” They approached the table. Hoshi held down the man’s shoulders while Jeonghan held his legs. “What do I do?” Dino asked. “Be quiet and don’t bother me.” She heard the man chuckle. He had a surprisingly nice laugh, she thought, but pushed that thought out of her mind. She needed to focus. “Okay, ready?” she asked, needle and suture in hand. “I’m always re— oh, shit!” He yelled as soon as she started. “You really weren’t kidding.” “Told you,” she murmured absentmindedly, keeping her attention on the stitches. “Hyung, you’re moving too much,” Dino commented from the side. “I can’t help it!” “Come on, it can’t be that bad.” “If you don’t shut up, I’ll make sure you get to experience it first-hand.” Naeun knew that if he kept moving like that, she might end up hurting him. She needed a way to distract him from the pain, at least for a minute, so she could finish stitching. “What’s your name?” she asked. He looked at her as if she was insane. “What?” “Your name,” she repeated. “I never got your name.” “Kim Mingyu,” he replied. “Why does that matter now?” “Is Dino always acting like a brat?” That question got a grin out of Mingyu and a scoff from Dino. “Usually,” Mingyu said. “But he’s cute so we try to ignore it.” The youngest boy perked up at that. “So, you finally admit that I’m cute?” Mingyu was about to retort when Naeun announced that she was done, causing the four men to sigh in relief. She put an antibiotic ointment over the wound and covered it with a bandage before telling Mingyu that he could sit up. “Thank you,” he told her. “You saved my life.” “Don’t thank me yet.” She handed him the ointment she used. “Use this once a day. You need to keep the wound dry and clean, but you can take the bandage off in two days. Also, Jeonghan, give me your phone number.” “Why?” he asked. She handed him her phone. “So you could give me daily updates, obviously. I need to be sure he’s healing properly, otherwise this little operation was for nothing.” “I can update you,” Mingyu offered. “No, I don’t want to hear from you ever again,” she said. “Your friends threatened my life because of you.” Jeonghan handed her the phone back. “Thank you for your help. I know we kind of made you do it, but we really appreciate it.” “Just make sure not to come back,” she told him. “I’ll clean up. You really need to get out of here.” He nodded, helping Mingyu up. When the four of them left and the door closed behind them, Naeun let out a long sigh of relief.
That was the weirdest first day ever.

CHAPTER ONE: HOW NOT TO ASK FOR HELP
When Naeun was nine years old, she wanted to be a superhero. There was something that always fascinated her about the heroes in movies; whether it was their selflessness and courage, or their ability to win the fight and save people even when all odds are against them. Her parents always laughed when she mentioned her dream career, telling her patronizingly that she would have to settle for something a little more realistic. Naeun never let that discourage her, though. In fact, it only made her more determined to find a real superhero, to prove that such people exist and that she can become one of them.
When Naeun was ten years old, her parents got in a car accident. Her mother suffered most of the damage, spending months laying in a hospital bed. The doctors weren’t certain that she’d live, but the nurse would not give up. Thanks to the nurse’s persistence and care, her mother eventually walked out of the hospital, holding Naeun’s hand. It was there, in that hospital, that the girl found her superhero. And years later, in that same hospital, Naeun started her job as a nurse.

“Hi,” Naeun walked up to the nurses’ station. “I’m—” “Naeun? The new nurse?” one of the nurses cut her off. Naeun took a step back, startled by the woman’s intensity. She wasn’t exactly scary, she was shorter than Naeun (which was quite a feat), with dark hair in a tight bun and kind eyes, but she had quite a lot of energy considering it was six in the morning. “Yes,” she replied hesitantly. “Good!” the overly-excited woman exclaimed, before shoving a pile of files in Naeun’s hands. “I’m Sejeong, I’ll be helping you while you get adjusted, sort of like a mentor.” “Oh, thank you.” “Don’t thank me, I’m excited, too!” Sejeong told her. “It’s my first time being a mentor.” Naeun eyed her warily. “You know what to do, though, right?” Sejeong chose to ignore her question. She grabbed Naeun’s hand, almost making her drop the files she was holding, and started dragging her down the hall. “Come on, we have a lot of work to do.” Naeun glanced at the other nurses for help, but they just waved at her and wished her good luck. All she could do was let herself be dragged and try not to fall over.
At least this wouldn’t be boring.
  ↠ ↠ ↠ ↠ ↠
It had been a rather slow day, spent checking up on the patients and listening to Sejeong’s endless chatter. She had been glued to Naeun’s side all day, giving her tips on how to best care for the patients. Most of the time, though, she just talked about the other nurses, the doctors, or her husband, determined to make sure that Naeun knew every little detail about her life.
“Oh, here’s Yeonsoo! I haven’t seen him all day.” Sejeong pointed to a male nurse who made their way over to them. It was nearing the end of their shift and they had nothing to do at the moment, so they sat in the reception area, drinking coffee and trying to stay awake. Yeonsoo smiled at them and bowed when he approached them. “You’re Naeun, right? I’m Yeonsoo.” Naeun smiled back, patting the seat next to her. “It’s nice to meet you. Why don’t you sit with us?” “I can’t,” he said apologetically. “Usually the moment I sit down, one of the patients calls.” “It’s been quiet for a while now, so I’m sure it’s alright for you to rest.” She insisted. Yeonsoo gave in and sat down beside them, snatching Sejeong’s coffee. “Hey, go make your own!” Sejeong tried to protest, but he had already downed it all in one sip before giving her back the empty cup. “Pig.” “I’m tired,” he complained. “I had to work a double shift because Hyunjin didn’t show up, that bastard, and the old lady in room 34—” Before he could finish his sentence, the sound of a beeper could be heard clearly, making all of them sigh. “If that’s her again, I swear…“ Yeonsoo muttered, taking his beeper out of his pocket. “Oh, it’s not mine, thank god.” Naeun checked hers, standing from her seat. “It’s mine, I’ll see you guys later.” Sejeong got up, too. “Do you want me to come with you?” “It’s fine,” Naeun dismissed. “It’s Mr. Lee, he probably just needs some more painkillers. It’ll only take a minute.”
She went to the patient’s room and, as she expected, he was in pain again. Giving him the medicine, she tried to reassure him. “Your surgery is tomorrow morning, sir,” she smiled. “I know it’s difficult, but you just have to get through today.” “Will it hurt?” the man asked. He was 73 years old, pale and fragile, but his voice was surprisingly strong, as was his character. Naeun had a chance to talk to him today, and he was quickly becoming one of her favorite patients. “You might feel some discomfort for a few days, but during the surgery itself you won’t feel a thing,” she explained kindly. “Either way, it won’t hurt as much as it does now. Is there anything else you need, Mr. Lee?”
After being dismissed, she made her way back to the nurse’s station. However, when she passed by the morgue, she stopped in her tracks.
There was a crash, and then voices. There had to be at least two people there, she guessed. But she knew that the coroner had gone home for the day, so the room should be empty, unless some of the corpses felt chatty. Hesitantly, she crept closer to the door, trying to hear the voices more clearly.
“…needs help…”
“….can’t just ask…”
“…might die.”
Naeun froze. Both because of the phrase ‘might die’, and because she felt the cold metal of a gun press to the back of her neck. “Don’t be shy,” a male voice whispered from behind her. “Go in.” With a shaky hand, she pushed the door open. As soon as she did, she felt the man shove her inside. “What the—” she stared in shock at the scene before her.
Two men, their clothes covered in dirt and blood, stood pointing their guns at her. On the operating table, a third man lay unconscious. His shirt was torn and she could see a large gash on his abdomen. “Good,” one of the men said, lowering his gun. “You got help.” Naeun struggled to form a sentence. “I- you—what?” The man who stood behind her lowered his gun as well and walked over to his unconscious friend. “You see, Mingyu here got injured during a fight with our rivals, so you’re going to fix him up.” “Rivals?” Naeun asked. “Who the hell are you people? What are you doing in the morgue?” The man smiled at her. With his light hair and soft features, he looked like an angel, but the look in his eyes made her blood run cold with fear. “Right, sorry, I forgot to introduce myself.” He said softly. “My name is Jeonghan, and these are Hoshi and Dino.” Naeun’s breath caught in her throat. She knew those names, everyone did. “Seventeen,” she whispered. One of the most dangerous gangs in Seoul. “You’ve heard of us,” Jeonghan’s smile widened. “Now, let’s get to work.”
