heads up everybody who uses taglists: tumblr's made a change where you can only tag 5 people per line of text. so if you have a taglist like this:

the last two people won't be tagged at all! in order to make sure everybody gets a notification, you can do it like this:

remember to check your taglist after posting, preferably on the mobile app, where the difference between tagged and untagged users will be visually obvious.

five sentence fic starter: labrat

Whumpee lay in their cage, watching the rats on the other side run up and down their own enclosure. It was a particularly cruel thing, to keep them locked up in such close proximity — it didn't leave Whumpee a single moment in any given day to forget about their own lab rat status.

Not only that, but the rats were treated a lot better. They weren't starved, or hit, they didn't have to wear shock collars and ankle cuffs that tracked their every move.

Whumpee wished so badly they could be a lab rat.

being aromantic and into whump is like. shoutout to whump for being a great opportunity to engage with stories about intimacy and vulnerability and powerful emotion and physical interactions with other people and intense relationships that are not presumptively based in romance. what would i do without you.

sometimes I bite during experiments so that they give me a couple jolts through my shock collar. just to feel something.

🔹 Saying that it's okay to write or read about dark and taboo topics but only when they're portrayed in a certain way is still censorship.

🔹 Wanting to ban or forbid media that you believe portrays a negative topic in a positive light, by glorifying, romanticizing, or fetishizing it is still censorship.

🔹 There is no objective metric to decide if a story is portraying a negative topic the 'right' way.

🔹 Just because a piece of fiction doesn't explicitly condemn or portray an evil action in a bad light in the text doesn't mean the author thinks its good or is trying to persuade the audience that it is good.

🔹 Survivors of trauma will not always write fiction about their trauma in a way that seems 'right' or 'normal' to you.

🔹 Banning fiction because it portrays dark, taboo topics in a way you consider gross or disgusting is still censorship.

Presumed Dead

This might be a niche interest but personally I love when a kidnapped character has been mia for months, maybe even a few years, to the point when everyone else in their life has basically run out of gas trying to find them. They've tried everything. No leads. The authorities have stopped searching, everyone has called it quits. They've all mourned and grieved and cried, but basically they've all started trying to pick up the pieces and move on with their lives.

Only for the bad guy who captured the kidnapped character to whip them out as the ace up their sleeve in a negotiation when their own back is up against the wall. And not even prefacing it with a "Would you like your friend back?" or a "What would you do if I told you X was still alive?" Just showing up to the negotiation with X in tow, bound and gagged and in what is clearly an agonizing amount of pain, but somehow they're still breathing, after all this time...

buffet is such a good metaphor for it!! it's such a fun way to get to know characters, too - just seeing them in a bunch of different contexts and piecing together their personality from that.

i'm about to start formatting my other blog @theherosvillain that way, i think, bc my OCs get up to so many different things that don't relate to The Plot™, and honestly it would be a waste not to post any of it.

just wanted to say i love how you have so many different snippets and aus with your characters, i think it's really cool!! i also write like that (lots of characters, lots of scenarios), and your blog is inspiring me to post all my aus without worrying too much about explaining everything 😅

YEAHHHHHH omg im so glad!! I like to think of my writing as a buffet, where you can start anywhere and figure things out as you go, whether that's with my reapers and angels and demons or my high fantasy universe or the modern au, or any of the others! People are clever, and I've found that if you trust your readers and offer like, a little clarification here and there then there aren't many issues at all

People like variety and it's fun to see others who like to write that variety!!
