We cut our ride short on the South Island and made our way North to spend more time with family before we head to America. That left us agonising close to the 1000 km mark. The last 2 weeks were spent off the bike, but we got back on them yesterday and headed up to Mt Taranaki for the day. As we were leaving Alexandra on Day 12, we decided not to follow the Roxburgh Gorge trail because you needed to hire a boat, to transport you 15 min downstream at the cost of $95 per person!That wasn’t going to happen! So we took the main road, fighting crosswinds and traffic to Lake Roxburgh. We joined Clutha gold trail after crossing the hydro dam and stopped to eat. Day 11, the slow start we needed. We left the campsite around 10 knowing we only had a short day ahead. We jumped back on the @otagocentralrailtrail and the sun was shining, wind at our back and little did we know the trail was littered with wild apple trees. We picked what we needed and it was our snacks for the next 33 km till we got to Alexandra. After a huge climb the day before, Day 10 started with an easy 30km decent into Waipiata and we joined the Otago Central Rail Trail. We stoped at the pub for a beer and shared a couple of pies. We continued up the trail and waved good bye to our friends who had a host in Ranfurly and myself & Summer pushed on uphill into a headwind for the next 35km. It was tough going till we hit the bend at Oturehua , then everything changed from the wind to the scenery. It was absolutely beautiful as we dipped into the valley and the huge mountains casted shadows whilst the sun was beginning to set. We found ourself going through tunnels and over bridges as we descended into Omakau where we managed to get to the supermarket before it shut. Day 9, It was Easter. Ahead of us awaited Danseys pass, a tough little uphill climb that stretched about 35km and started from the time we left our camp site. The night before we were joined by @fentonthegirl & partner Adam, two well traveled bikers who had 9000km + under their belts and they were all over this climb like a rash whilst myself and Summer brought up the tail. We only managed to catch up with them when they had a break. Once we got back on our bikes they were well gone within 10 minutes. After a tough 5 hours of climbing we made it to the top of Danseys Pass. A tricky down hill decent and we found our mates at the pub already finished their meal. We were all chuffed with our efforts and celebrated with a few beers.
