While I’m at it, here’s a video of me playing Gallop Racer 2004...as a nod to my horse racing background. I’m in two worlds, horse racing and video games. Right now, the racing articles I write take priority, but that could change at some point.

Gawker's troubles justified in Hogan/Thiel lawsuit
by Reinier Macatangay
Back in 2007, Gawker published a story “outing” PayPal founder Peter Thiel.
As most readers realize by now, Thiel did not want his sexuality out in the open, and to make a long story short, he started a vendetta against Gawker.
Tumblr media
Do real journalists use “totally”?
The question is, whether forcibly outing people is the right thing to do.
Maybe from a legal standpoint, there is nothing against it. Ethically though, if someone does not want their preference flaunted out in the open, there is no real reason to write a story on it, especially for a businessman. Silicon Valley has always been about technology and money, not sexual preferences.
Years later, Gawker published a story including a video featuring Hulk Hogan and his friend’s wife in the act of sex, and it basically equated to porn.
http://gawker.com/5948770/even-for-a-minute-watching-hulk-hogan-have-sex-in-a-canopy-bed-is-not-safe-for-work-but-watch-it-anyway
Tumblr media
(Video is understandably missing.)
Hogan and the lady had no clue they were filmed. Gawker simply published the video because someone gave it to them.
To no one’s surprise, Hogan filed a lawsuit and the judge initially ordered Gawker to take down the sex tape post.
Gawker decided their company was above the law and kept it going.
http://gawker.com/a-judge-told-us-to-take-down-our-hulk-hogan-sex-tape-po-481328088
Tumblr media
“We won’t.” Their article titles read like conversations.
Thiel helped fund Hogan’s fight against Gawker.
Hogan won.
Tumblr media
Yes!
Certain people are not pleased at Thiel’s “philanthropic” actions because they believe it sets a dangerous precedent. If someone rich sees something he does not like, the website can theoretically be shut down through money.
On the flip side, if the judge sided with Gawker, then if websites like Gawker do not like someone, showing a private sex video as revenge is fine without penalties to deter them. Any website can bully people by posting trash, as Gawker did to Hogan by publishing a private sex video.
Gawker and its ring of websites tend to offer nonsensical clickbait articles with no real substance. Oh, for sure, there are exceptions, but for the most part Gawker writers behave like high school gossip columnists.
Hogan had private sex, and without any knowledge or consent, Gawker published the video. To this day, Nick Denton thinks it was fine to do so.
If a company does something wrong, the process will play out in courts, whether or not someone is rich and financing the lawyers.
While Thiel helped Hogan, ultimately, the blame falls on Gawker for ruining someone’s privacy during an intimate act without permission.
In a perfect world, Hogan will take down Gawker and the world can be free of their awful family of websites.

Two sexist video game advertisements from different eras
by Reinier Macatangay
Gamers will view numerous sexist advertisements for as long as they remain interested in video games.
When the gaming industry kicked backed into gear thanks to Nintendo in the late 1980s, the hobby was still seen as predominantly male. As times changed, the demographics became more varied, but once in a while companies bring out sexist material anyway. It is hard to break industry habits.
Here are two of the more interesting sexist video game ads, one from around 20 years ago and another one more recent, below.
Davis World Cup Tour
Tumblr media
Well, that’s not suggestive.
The above advertisement, based on the graphics, looks like it comes from the mid-1990s during the peak of the Super Nintendo era. The girl does not even appear to be wearing underwear! No male will focus on the actual game.
If nothing else though, the advertisement has lasted throughout the years (for the wrong reasons).
It is strange to think a company manager in their office had the above picture pitched to them and said “Yes, perfect!”
Lilac-colored Sony PSP
Tumblr media
OMG
Lilac PSP! OMG!
This advertisement comes from 2009.
Of course, the featured game on the bottom left is Hannah Montana. Showing off a PSP with a girly color is fine, but they possibly went overboard.
“GIRLZ PLAY TOO.”
The line treats girl gamers as dumb.
On a side note, the game on the screen almost looks like The Legend of Zelda because of the horse and scenery. This writer needs glasses.
The sexism topic will be revisited at some point.

Pikachu enjoys violin at FanimeCon 2016
by Reinier Macatangay
Those who never attended a major anime convention before might wonder what goes on at those events.
Well, prepare to see Pikachu ... listening to soothing violin music!
youtube
Tumblr media
Pika.
It does seem absurd to sit down and relax to live classical-style music, only to see a giant Pikachu show up and bounce up and down to the rhythm.
Yet, for longtime con-goers, it is a normal, every occurrence.

Feminists attack AVGN for no logical reason
by Reinier Macatangay
The Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN), or James Rolfe, posted a video stating reasons why he refused to see the new Ghostbusters.
In a predictable display of irony, feminists writers saw the opportunity to attack, and because of the extra attention, it picked up over 1 million views.
Tumblr media
Impressive number.
youtube
James explains why he will not see the “female” Ghostbusters.
He gave a reasonable explanation for not wanting to see the reboot.
With respect to his love for the old Ghostbusters, James explained the new Ghostbusters did not touch upon its origin well enough. For example, in Star Wars The Force Awakens, the new movie acknowledged the source material by using the old characters and keeping a clear connection.
In the new Ghostbusters, it can be implied from this video that James, besides noting the poor trailer filled with lame jokes and effects, does not think there is enough continuity between the old and new one. He does not wish to see the new Ghostbusters because the trailer makes it clear how bad it is.
The point is arguable, although in no way sexist.
Some (not all) feminists are so eager to fight a war, that they start degrading someone who is simply not misogynistic.

Nintendo only showing ONE game at E3 2016?
by Reinier Macatangay
Granted, the one game Nintendo is showcasing at E3 this year is Zelda for the Wii U, but c’mon.
Tumblr media
“I’m Nintendo’s only hope!”
Nintendo makes a lot of mistakes in the modern era, and pinning all their hopes on one game is one of them.
Are there other games in the pipeline for the Wii U and 3DS from Nintendo?
Who knows? Only one game will be shown.
One of the great criticisms of Nintendo over the past two decades is their overuse of Mario, Pokemon and Zelda because the company knows those are the “safe” franchises that will cash in for them.
WELL, at some point companies must change and think of new products.

Pick-up lines for Cooking Mama
by Reinier Macatangay
Creating this post might turn out as a bad idea, but with con-season approaching, it is worth a shot.
Famous personalities are part of any convention. For example, at the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Cooking Mama showed up and kindly posed for a photo in the middle of the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Tumblr media
She always smiles.
What does one say to such a dignified and famous woman?
1) Hey there. I have something you can bake. (Then, wink of course.)
2) Whoa, turn down the oven temperature! You look smoking.
3) Unplug the toaster. You’re hot. (Okay, same thing.)
4) You own the recipe to my heart.
5) Let’s play a better game.

E3 2006: Sony’s memorable press conference
by Reinier Macatangay
As crazy as this sounds, E3 needs more press conferences such as Sony’s presentation in 2006.
Tumblr media
Oh no! Numbers!
Hear this out.
Sure, parts of the conference felt like a comedy show rather than a real serious set of announcements and demonstrations of the next chapter in Sony’s video game division, but the entire event became part of gaming history.
Seen now, the Sony 2006 E3 Press Conference comes off as entertaining from start to finish, because the company made so many mistakes that ... it just HAD to be a prewritten script. Sadly for them, it was not.
The two-hour comedy act can be streamed on YouTube.
youtube
Some of the better moments are also cut into parts on separate videos.
youtube
Riiiiiddge Raaaaccerrr.
youtube
“So here’s this giant enemy crab...”
C’mon, those moments never get old!
Bring back the “bad” press conferences.

Yes, another flashback post. This interview with @windofthestars from FanimeCon 2015 remains the most polished work ever posted on this blog.
It is unclear if I will attend Fanime this year.
FanimeCon 2015: Chat with WindoftheStars
by Reinier Macatangay
Professional cosplayer and avid gamer windofthestars is a Guest of Honor at this weekend’s FanimeCon in San Jose.
Tumblr media
Just glad this smartphone took a decent picture.
Without knowing much about her a week ago, the research was ramped up considerably in the last few days. Even so, she came off as a lot more sweet in person than expected.
Here is the transcript of the chat!
RM: You have 195k followers on Facebook and 23k on Twitter. What is the secret to gaining a following online?
WindoftheStars: Oh man. I don’t know if there really is a secret. I just kind of do my thing. I try to be engaging and talk about things I’m really passionate about … and they start talking to you. And you start talking back and make connections online.
RM: Just be nice to people?
WindoftheStars: Yeah, be nice. To me, I don’t consider people just fans. It’s more like “you’re a fellow otaku, like me!”
RM: I saw some of your videos of you playing games and just hanging out on Twitch.
WindoftheStars: I love doing that and just sitting there and talking about stuff.
RM: From looking at your YouTube channel, you’ve been coming to this convention since at least 2007. Why is FanimeCon special to you, and how does it compare to other nerd conventions?
WindoftheStars: I like Fanime because I like the atmosphere of the convention. It’s a really positive one. I like the fact that the setup they have here … it’s really easy to find people. So if you’re cosplaying a lot, it’s easy to find your friends and find photographers and do something like that. And most of the friends I’ve made have been in the Bay Area since I started cosplaying in 2004 or something like that. When I first started going (to anime conventions), I went to Bay Area conventions. So most of my friends were in this area and a lot of people I met in SoCal come up to here. You know, a lot of people seem to go to this convention.
RM: It’s a big convention, but it’s not the biggest.
WindoftheStars: It is a big convention. But, the atmosphere is really nice. AX is huge, but it’s very industry, you know, and the whole convention … walking from one end of the convention center to the other takes 20 minutes. You can pretty much walk from Point A to Point B (at FanimeCon) down to the Fairmont in less than that. Everything is still pretty condense and it’s easy to get around. Fanime is kind of like the first really good anime convention I went to when I started going to conventions.
RM: What was the first convention you went to?
WindoftheStars: WonderCon, back when it was held in San Francisco.
RM: At the Moscone Center.
WindoftheStars: Yeah, I have a lot of good memories here … I used to compete a lot. But, Fanime was the first ever that I went on a huge stage, in front of a huge audience.
RM: Do you have any crazy Fanime stories, maybe something funny or bizarre that happened when hanging out with friends, or performing?
WindoftheStars: I remember when one year I dressed up as Lina Inverse in 2008. At the time, not a lot of people dressed up as Lina Inverse. And so, one of my friends came up to someone dressed as Lina Inverse, with the same colors and everything that I had done, and she thought it was me. And she came up and, she like rubbed her hand around, and was like “Hey! How are you doing?” And then the girl turned around and she said “Oh my God you’re not my friend.” The funny story is, we became friends with her. You know, we’re like “this is the other Lina!”
RM: Did you always want to be a professional cosplayer while growing up?
WindoftheStars: No, actually. Growing up, I wanted to be a veterinarian. Going to school, I went for a degree in animal science and fully intended to do that. When I was in college, I started to work with veterinarians and decided nahh, that wasn’t my thing. I did cosplay kind of on the side. For years, it was just a hobby and something I did. The further it went … the skills that I learned through cosplay allowed me to get jobs (such as) sowing jobs, commissions working as a tailor and things like that.
RM: And you sell stuff on your website.
WindoftheStars: Yeah, the community changed so much. It’s become more mainstream and allowed me to sell prints and stuff like that … and I’ll sell shirts and things that I made. So I don’t know, it just kind of happened. It was not something I tried to do.
RM: For most people, it’s a dream to cosplay for a living.
WindoftheStars: Yeah you know … I make things!
RM: Do you think cosplaying is an accessible activity for someone without too much money?
WindoftheStars: It depends on the project you want to do. If you’re just starting out, there’s definitely ways to make the costume cheap. You know, they say you can choose two or three things. You can make it cheap, you can make it high quality or you can make it fast. You can choose two of those three things. You can make it fast and cheap, but maybe not a high quality costume. You can make it a high quality costume and cheap, but you’re going to spend a lot of time on it. You’re probably going to spend a little more money in the beginning because there’s a lot of trial and error, and you haven’t built up that knowledge of what works and what does not.
RM: You probably don’t want to stress out too much when first starting out.
WindoftheStars: Yeah, when I first started out, I did Kousagi’s (from “Sailor Moon”) school uniform. The reason I did it because I found the perfect skirt, and then I bought a shirt off of Goodwill. All I needed to make was the collar and the bows. So it’s obviously a lot cheaper to do it that way, like if you find items, and it was something that was within my skillset at the time. I was still learning how to do stuff. The further I went, the more I could buy more fabrics and experiment more. Even if it’s something that you think is going to be expensive, if you plan out how you’re going to do it you can buy pieces here and there.
RM: You just need to think about it.
WindoftheStars: For me, it might only take a week or two, or a month making the costume. Prior to that, I’m probably spending a month or two planning it, researching stuff … starting to buy the wig, buy some shoes … although I might not work on it for a while.
RM: By now, you probably have more money than when you first started out.
WindoftheStars: A little bit. When I first started out, I was in college. I worked on campus and still lived at home… and what little money I had went to financial obligations. The rest of it went to cosplay.
RM: Did you take out financial aid loans for cosplay?
WindoftheStars: I didn’t do that, thank God.
RM: Do you think the cosplayer’s body type should match the character, or should they cosplay as whatever they want?
WindoftheStars: I think they should cosplay as whatever they want. I think the main goal is to have as much fun as you can. To me, I don’t think the body type matters.
RM: Some people make fun of overweight women that are portraying a thinner character.
WindoftheStars: Yeah, I’ve seen guys do it too. Overweight guys are out there portraying a muscular character. To me, I don’t care. If you’re having fun and making friends, getting photos … that’s perfect. If people are concerned, there are ways to alter the costume so that you feel comfortable in the cosplay. For me, I get really self conscious about how I look and sometimes I’ll alter the costume to make it look more flattering.
RM: So you do worry about what people write about you online?
WindoftheStars: Not too much about what they write about me online. At this stage, it’s been so long, I’m kind of like … eh. The only thing that really concerns me are when my friends say something and people that are close to me … if there’s an issue or something, or I did something and they’re like mellow.
RM: What was the most challenging costume for you to put together and why?
WindoftheStars: Recently I did Kasumi from “Mass Effect” and her body suit was really challenging. Really, really challenging. It took five or six tries to get the hood remotely close to what it looks like. It was a difficult sowing project. There’s a lot of layers. A lot of planning because her suit is so skin tight. It’s very specific.
RM: Was it worth all the effort?
WindoftheStars: It was because I really like that costume. It’s hard to get into though. You have to wiggle into it like a sausage.
RM: Is it hard to walk around?
WindoftheStars: No, it’s actually really comfortable.
RM: What else do you enjoy doing besides cosplaying and gaming? Any non-nerd related activities?
WindoftheStars: My boyfriend and I like to go for drives. I like watching a lot of movies. Especially after a convention, it’s like “It’s time to stop (and watch a movie).”
RM: Do you prefer going to the theater, or just sitting at home watching Netflix?
WindoftheStars: It kind of depends. Sometimes I like to go out and “Oh, let’s go see a movie!” or we like to stay at home and watch stuff.
RM: What did you think of “Avengers: Age of Ultron”?
WindoftheStars: I haven’t seen it. I haven’t seen “Mad Max” either!
RM: Geez, what’s wrong with you?
WindoftheStars: Busy preparing for Fanime!
RM: What is your favorite video game of all time? I know you play a lot of shooting games.
WindoftheStars: I think probably “Borderlands.” The “Borderlands” franchise are some of my favorite games. I’ve played them over and over a lot. Either that or the “Mass Effect” series.
RM: I’ve only played “Mass Effect 2,” which is strange because I’m probably missing a lot of stuff from “Mass Effect 1.”
WindoftheStars: Yeah, there’s so much. “Borderlands” I like to play because it’s a shooter and it’s fun to play with my friends. It’s a co-op. It’s not serious. It’s a good one to just have fun. “Mass Effect” is serious and you get really attached to the story. I watch the story over and over again. I like the gameplay too, but I play “Mass Effect” more for the story than the gameplay.
RM: When “Mass Effect 3″ came out, there was controversy over the ending. People were upset. Were you unhappy as well?
WindoftheStars: I don’t know if I was unhappy. I was unsatisfied. It felt like some of the choices made throughout the whole entire series did not make a difference at the end. They had all this stuff that was going on. It felt like they could have done a lot more.
RM: Maybe they rushed it.
WindoftheStars: It could have been better. But, I wasn’t one of those people that were like ‘let’s flip some tables, throw some controllers’ and that sort of thing.
Thank you to windofthestars for chatting with me.
Be sure to check out her Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr!

E3: Annual gathering for elitists
by Reinier Macatangay
Since getting accepted to the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), the media staff has rejected this applicant nearly every year afterwards.
Tumblr media
Most coveted badge in gaming
Well, time to bash them again in what will become a yearly post.
The gathering is elitist. Disregard the fact they will not give a press badge. Organizers are still elitist because the event is closed to the public as a “trade show” every year, yet it is hyped up in websites to no ends because places like Gamespot, IGN and other big news organizations know the clicks will come during E3.
So, it is the Super Bowl of gaming, BUT THE FANS CANNOT ATTEND.
Because the average gamer is barred from attending E3, websites take advantage of this and throw the event into everyone’s faces for one week.
“Want to attend E3? No one is allowed to, so click on our site so that we can charge advertisers extra money for all the clicks related to this event that fans are not allowed to see!”
Admittedly, E3 is a fun time once inside.
Tumblr media
Nintendo Booth in 2011
Attending E3 felt like walking into an exclusive club for the privileged few.
At least, last year, Nintendo let the public into the Nintendo World Championships, held at the Nokia Theatre across the street.
youtube

How about using the model of the Tokyo Game Show and letting the public come in for one or two days, while reserving a few other days solely for industry insiders?
Think about the idea, E3.

Kotaku: Worst gaming website?
by Reinier Macatangay Today’s post goes back to a long-held opinion: Kotaku is the worst video game website in existence.
Tumblr media
Boo.
Here is a video recorded last year which explains.
youtube
(Quality of video can be better.)
Kotaku loves using “clickbait” article titles, which seems fine at first, but over time those “clever” headlines begin to wear on a person’s eyes.
Furthermore, a lot of their articles are not video game articles. Think about how many websites are part of the “Gawker Empire.” With all those websites, there should be a sense of organization and less clutter.
Who cares if Tobey Maguire has high praise for Tom Holland’s Spiderman on a video game website?
Tumblr media
Who is Tom Holland?
Yeah, maybe Kotaku simply wishes to attract nerds in general. Regardless, The lack of focus hurts.
Of course, with Hulk Hogan scoring major victories over Gawker, Kotaku’s days could end soon. Let’s hope so.

Mighty No. 9: Does anyone care anymore?
by Reinier Macatangay
Almost three years ago, the Mighty No. 9 project began on Kickstarter to an optimistic and well-received beginning. After all, the man who created Mega Man wanted to create a Mega Man-type game under his own company.
Putting together a side-scrolling 2-D action game in the same feel and style of Mega Man did not seem like such a complicated task for the legendary Keiji Inafune and fans were more than happy to donate.
Tumblr media
Impressive.
Fast forward three years later and after a few disappointing delays, the project is still in development, and yes, delayed ... more than once this year!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sad.
If 67,000+ people did not contribute nearly $4 million, maybe the delays would not be such a big deal. But, the fans counted on Inafune and supported the project with their own hard-earned money.
Tumblr media
Really?
While this author has been out of the loop a bit when it comes to video games (yes, despite the title of the blog), since when does it cost almost $4 million dollars to make a side-scrolling action game in the likeness of Mega Man?
Yes, the online features including the new co-op mode might add to the cost this time, but $4 million ... for that kind of money donated, gamers expect results and a faster development period for a Mega Man clone.
In fact, the entire situation has become so embarrassing for Inafune and company that they simply stopped posting updates.
Tumblr media
Feb. 29 marks the last Tweet.
One of the comments underneath the Jan. 25 post on the Kickstarter page looks especially depressing.
Tumblr media
Too little, too late.
Mighty No. 9 has remained in development for so long, that the poster’s son passed away. He hoped to relive the glory days of Mega Man with him.
Another poster pointed out that he entered and graduated college before the development of this game finished!
Tumblr media
Terrible!
Inafune needs to release the game, with or without the online features (if that is why they keep delaying the release).
Fans will forgive the co-op mode or whatever online existing options missing for a few months, but no one likes feeling cheated out of money.
The longer Comcept and Inti Creates waits, the less fans will care or trust Inafune again.

Flashback to FanimeCon 2012: religious protesters
Reinier Macatangay
FanimeCon coverage ramps up on this blog, at least for now.
Tumblr media
Beautiful San Jose Convention Center
One tradition at this convention, and many other similar nerd conventions, is the presence of religious protesters who condemn all the con-goers to hell.
youtube
Oh no! Big signs!
Conventions provide an audience for people to voice their issues about unrelated topics. In this instance, the people above want to discuss religion. Like the sign on the left states, “if you do not believe that I Am He you shall die in your sins.” The statement is possibly true, but falls on deaf ears at Famine.
A short walkthrough of this video is in order. The speaker in orange talks into his megaphone throughout the video.  Note the girl at :15 who walks by and tells her friend “They need to get over themselves.” At 1:00, the crowd starts chanting “Turtles, turtles, turtles ... “ He responds, “Maybe you are going to go to hell.”
In the middle of the video, the audio seems inaudible at some points (sorry).
His lecture continues and he tells the crowd at 2:40 “The judgement is coming ... yes this message is urgent!” The rover continues to pace back and forth, looking confused. A motorcycle is heard in the background.
At 4:05, the speaker gives out an evil, almost comical laugh! With perfect timing, the guy in the motorcycle spins his wheels and creates a cloud of smoke in his path, which the con-goers cheered.
About 30 seconds later, Raptor Jesus comes up behind the speaker and starts dancing, and everyone chants “Raptor Jesus!, Raptor Jesus! ...”
Well, at least the situation tends to unite the con-goers together.

FanimeCon Game Room: Short overview
by Reinier Macatangay
One of the best areas of FanimeCon continues to be the Game Room, a wide, spacious place where con-goers can play video games, arcade games, board games or simply hang out and charge their phone.
Tumblr media
Mario on original Nintendo console
Every year, the FanimeCon Game Room offers an interesting mix of old retro video games and newer ones, all on their actual consoles.
While seeing a PlayStation 4 or XBOX One in a Game Room will not surprise anyone, retro gaming enthusiasts will LOVE spotting old favorites such as the original Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. Obscure consoles like the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast tend to make an appearance at this convention as well.
Board games and similar activities offer gamers even more fun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other games exist besides electronic ones?
Attendees can stand and simply watch others play Jenga.
Tumblr media
One sneeze and it’s over
Down further in the room, arcade games are also available. They require quarters, although one can argue this brings back the authentic arcade feel.
Back in the old days, gamers would visit arcades and play Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat and other fighting games for hours. Common courtesy involved playing a quarter on the machine to claim the next turn against whoever who the last match. Arcades attracted quite a few people in the past and allowed gamers to come together in one place to socialize, which makes their demise sad. But, FanimeCon brings back the arcade.
Also, FanimeCon brings back the gimmicky games as well.
Tumblr media
Stacker
Oh no! Stacker!
While some may question whether anyone actually wins at Stacker, the presence of the machine still adds to the nostalgia of a great arcade.
If all else fails, just hang around and take cosplay pictures.
The Game Room remains a consistently enjoyable presence at FanimeCon and without doubt they will provide con-goers with fun again.
