Starting to think a cooler headcanon for Clark’s upbringing might just be that the entire town of Smallville collectively decided to just go with it and accept that Martha and John's kid has superpowers, but we don't talk about it.
Someone's tractor gets stuck and nothing can get it out? "Be a dear and run down to the Kents, would you? Ask for Clark?"
"Why Clark, we need a machine--"
"Run along now."
Or if he kicks too hard and the football vanishes into the upper stratosphere, no it didn't, we all collectively saw it land over there *vague hand movements*

It's not personal, strictly business - if they're trying to screw you like that, no problem with screwing them first.

100% of anti-semetic hate crimes, as per ADL data since 2002, is committed by right wingers.
3058 incidents.
Zero incidents by Leftists. Zero by Muslims.
The media narrative would have you believe the exact opposite.
College campuses are full of different ideas that challenge power. That challenge colonizer inhumanity. They are not antisemetic hate crimes.

not familiar with that modern take on Babel, but reminded of something from the Starship Troopers novel - a quick mention later on that languages besides English are only spoken a bit at home, at least for the characters in question - Spanish (for an Argentinian) and Tagalog - goes further than the usual English/English analogue as default in scifi/fantasy
the way victorie and robin and ramy all loose their birth languages has me in shambles. victorie never really spoke hatian creole, she moved to france at a very young age, and when she tried to bring it into babel, she was dismissed. ramy, who’s from kolkata, who’s bengali, only speaks bengali once in the book and his speech has become rudimentary because the british saw urdu and sanskrit and arabic as more valuable. robin has forgotten cantonese by the time he goes back home for the same reason. it’s utterly tragic it comes with a deep pain that’s hard to describe the pain of loosing your mother tongue.

Dislikes: radical's two-step of berating people for not supporting an unrealistic solution, but when asked about potential practical problems saying that their solution is so far from happening that focusing on the nitty gritty problems is obviously bad faith

Adding on from my last post about KOSA:
I know that many people think that if KOSA gets pushed through the Committee hearing next Wednesday--April 17th, then the Internet will instantly disappear...It won't. People tend to forget that there are many hoops a bill has to jump through in order to become a law. First, it has to be voted through the Committee, next it goes to the House of Representatives, next the Senate, then it goes back to the House for review, then it goes to the President to sign and even then, it takes about *18 months for it go into effect. **If I recall correctly, it may differ for each state. My point is, It will be a while before we see any real changes...but that doesn't mean we give up!
Tumblr media
Here is the number for the Committee holding the hearing next Wednesday: (202) 225-3641; Call them. Urge the Committee to vote 'NO' to KOSA--as well as the Protecting Kids on Social Media Act (Leave your zip code so it'll count!) Remember: There is much less support for KOSA in the House of Representatives than the Senate. And, of course, Continue to call your Senators & your House Representative! Can't find your reps? This handy site lets you look them up via your address: https://www.congress.gov/members/find-your-member
Please spread this around as well. Don't panic. The only reason KOSA hasn't passed yet is because people have been vocal about it. Keep calling! Keep making noise!
Stay strong & keep fighting!

Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1
The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.
So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.
So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.
Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.
And the probe is working again.
From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.

makes me think of stories where the rich parents aren't coughing up money for college, but the kid isn't getting financial aid or has trouble getting it because aid systems see a lack of need (or maybe the applicant has trouble filling out paperwork without parents providing the information), or they insist on a particular school or program (which can be ironic when they're expected to take a stable high paying field when they could afford to do something risky or low paid but fulfilling)
As a kid, when your parents are poor, you're poor. If they don't have money, that means none of you have money. But if someone's parents are rich, that doesn't necessarily mean the kid is. Sometimes rich peoples' kids aren't rich kids, they're just some rich freak's exotic pets that can talk but aren't allowed to.

Hard to maintain a Poker Face when dealing with morons
Also, I understand that some of the "Gaylor" conspiracies are based on closeness with her female friends, and assuming that sort of thing has been toxic to male-male interactions, so spreading it to women does not seem like a good idea
all goofing aside I genuinely don't understand the urge to reimagine Taylor Allison Swift as a secretly queer icon when the pop music scene(TM) is like. literally overflowing with women who actually like women. Gaga and Kesha and Miley and Halsey are right there. Rina Sawayama and Hayley Kiyoko and Rebecca Black and Kehlani and Victoria Monét and Miya Folick if you're willing to get slightly less top 100. Janelle and Demi for them nonbinary takes on liking girls. like what are we doing here. like I'm not even saying you can't enjoy Taylor but why would you hang all your little gay hopes on her.
