This bro was massive; the length of my thumb at least. Had no idea there were click beetles that could get that big.
Click beetles have an interesting ability; they have an organ on their underside that can be loaded to build up the energy needed to launch them into the air to right themselves if they end up their backs (and it frightens predators, too!). They get their name from the distinctive "click" noise the organ makes when it unlatches.

Check out my art blog: bugbeast.me - I just released a card game, and you can play it with a normal deck of cards!
That's enough of a confirmation for me! Thank you.
Wasps are gorgeous, and a lot more chill than many people give them credit for. I imagine it wouldn't have been too keen had I gotten any closer, but I'm not exactly thrilled when people invade my personal space either, so I can't say I really blame it.
And a quick PSA for everybody else out there: if a wasp lands on you, don't freak out, it probably just thinks the bright colored clothes you're wearing are a flower and will peace out when said "flower" provides no food. If you freak out and swat at it, or scream at the top of your lungs, it most likely will take that as a threat. Who wouldn't?
It honestly felt like it was looking directly at me. Wasps are scary looking, to be sure, but they really do get a bad rap. It watched me for awhile, backing away when I got close and eventually deciding I was being a little too annoying for its taste, and flying away. I honestly found it kind of cute, in a death machine covered in sparkles kinda way.
By the way, I believe this to be a paper wasp. No idea what species, though; leaning towards P. parametricus, but I'll happily take any corrections in the comments! 😃
Not looking very leaf-like sitting on that concrete wall, lil’ katydid. Summin’ may come along to take a bite.
I’m going to hazard a guess, with no research on it under my belt at all, that this katydid is hanging out on the side of this rocky building to absorb the heat radiating from it. I’m guessing it’d much rather find some nice greenery to hide in, but being warm is its current priority. If bugs get too cold, they cease being able to move, which is a major problem in this bug-eat-bug world.
This is my trying (and struggling) to collect plants for my ecosphere. I have no idea what these little sprouts are, or if they’d even survive submerged in water; I just assumed given they were sprouting under and near the stream. I eventually gave up trying to collect these plants and found others I thought (spoilers: incorrectly) would be more suitable. I tried my best to re-plant the young sprout.
I barely know anything about plants, especially aquatic ones. I did some basic research, but couldn’t find any of the plants I had screenshots of on my potato phone. I have a feeling I’d be better off collecting plants from a pond or lake rather than a stream.
Or next time I’ll just buy some moss balls from a nearby fish store lol
