Rookie is hiring! We’re looking for a story editor!
The ideal person for this job has at least two years’ experience as a story editor (either in print or online) and knows the basics of copyediting and fact-checking. Rookie is a fast-growing but small operation located in Brooklyn, NY (applicants should live in New York and be able to meet in and work from our office). We’re looking for someone who learns new skills and protocols quickly and who enjoys solving problems on their own. This is a contract position, with a possibility of becoming a salaried position down the line.
What you’ll be doing for Rookie:
• editing, copyediting, and fact-checking stories
• pitching stories, monthly editorial themes, and other kinds of content
• writing headlines and subheads
• publishing content in WordPress
• managing deadlines for writers, illustrators, and photographers
• collaborating with our team of story editors and freelance contributors
• reviewing and editing submissions from readers
• editing occasional pieces for print projects
• pitching contributions from and interviews with interesting people doing interesting work
• being on the lookout for new content and new contributors for the site
• light photo and video editing on occasion
• light social media
If this sounds like you, please send the following to [email protected], with the subject line STORY EDITOR APPLICATION:
1. Your résumé
2. An email including:
•  A critique of the site: what you like, what you don’t, and why. What should we do more of? What should we do less of? What new kinds of things would you like to see on Rookie?
•  2 essay or short story pitches, including an explanation of why they’d be a good fit for Rookie and our readers.
• 1 idea for a monthly editorial theme: Let us know what that month’s stories might include, and how you see the theme being expressed aesthetically.
• Links to your social media pages (Tumblr, Twitter, etc.) and to your blog, if you have one.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION: September 20

My bud Frances sent this FULL TIME job my way...
“Crème Design is a hospitality interior design firm located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. We are looking for a Junior Interior Designer to start immediately. Full time, salaried gig with all the benefits. You’d be working on a killer team with ME, Frances. I’m the Senior Interior Designer and new at Crème. One of my favorite college radio stations EVER is in search of a new General Manager. WLUW has awesome programming and serves a great community in Chicago. Position is full-time, salary, all the things.
More from Chloe, the current music director:  "Someone who loves college radio and is basically a grown up and can deal with me sometimes crying. Plus you'll live in CHICAGO (and Loyola pays like.....really well.....). Start time is negotiable- current GM's last day is December 19th so they could have an interim for like 3 weeks but ideally position would begin January 12."
WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? If you have leadership / college radio experience this is an ideal opportunity. You gotta make an account with Loyola to apply so GET ON IT.

ROOMMATE NEEDED: whenever / ASAP (Bushwick, Brooklyn)
My friend and former roommate Dane has a room to fill. SUPER CHEAP. Amazing good vibes. Queer friendly, body positive.
9' by 12' ROOM IN OUR LOVELY BUSHWICK APARTMENT /// $525 PER MONTH plus utilities (50- 60 $ per person).
About the room: The room is windowless but the room comes with a ceiling fan and vents on the wall for good air circulation. Has a closet. Not a walk-thru.
About the apartment: Cozy and clean, located on a 3rd floor walk up, 3 min walk from the Halsey J train. 1 cat lives in the apartment. No other pets are allowed. Non-smoking apartment, although you can smoke out the window in the common space if desired.
About us: We are two sober queers seeking to fill our extra room in our lovely apartment. We are both dog walkers by day, who pursue our creative endeavors at home in the evenings. Dane is a musician, and will often be found playing piano in the common space. France is a quilt maker.
This room is adjacent to the living room and has vents in the wall. While providing circulation, they do allow for a lot of sound transfer from Dane practicing music in the evenings (5-9 ish most but not all weekdays) and weekends. So it would be lovely for someone who isn’t particular about sound and aural environment or someone who is out of the house in the evenings. We go to bed around midnight usually. You must be naked-friendly, body-positive and sex-positive. We both do not drink alcohol. You do not need to be sober, but we prefer that you don’t use alcohol habitually at home. We understand there are obviously lots of gray areas there and we can talk about it more.
For inquiries please contact France at jessicatrende [at] gmail [dot] com.
