In addition to broadcasting my DJ mixes from aboard my spaceship and researching illustrations about ancient art, I also come down to the surface of Earth to quilt. It's a fun, creative hobby and I get to hang out with sweet older ladies on Saturdays who cheer each other on and uplift everyone. This is my most recent project. Top and back complete. I am taking this one to a quilter to add the batting and do the quilting.

The funniest thing happens when people discover you sew/quilt/create...they want you to make memory quilts from their beloveds clothing. Whether it's baby clothes or their deceased loved ones, it's so common to have people ask me to make them. I have said no to everyone in the past, it's too much pressure to deliver something that personal. Will it meet their expectations? And what would I even charge for such an endeavor? It would be so much work.
An older woman I work with, who I very much respect and adore, just asked if I'd be able to make a quilt from her deceased son's clothing. And now I feel panic but not immediately wanting to say no. I'd love to be able to gift that for her and I'm sure I'd do it justice. My skills have improved with time and practice...
Idk how anyone carries the burden of being tasked as a memory keeper without feeling like you're gonna screw it up
Just musings to throw into the void

one of favorite parts of thrifting fabric is finding little gems like this — from different bundles, found on different trips, but a match made in heaven!!

Quilting has been used so extensively on quilts, throws, and comfortables that many think of it only in connection with them and do not realize how much real beauty it can contribute to garments. Quilting costs little more than your time....
Mary Brooks Picken added that you did have to take time to make it “perfect work,” so attention was needed as well. She gave examples of machine quilting all over on a robe, vest, or “comfortable” which is a little confusing, but comfortables here meant both padded or quilted comforters for beds AND padded and quilted mufflers (thank you, Oxford English Dictionary).  While this was published in Sewing Simplified from 1953, some of the material dated back to the 1930s from earlier books Picken wrote, and the meaning of words has since changed.
She also pointed out that bands along the edge of a garment might be quilted, and I have seen quilted collars and cuffs that are handsome as well. Picken also suggested quilting a coat lining, but I swore I would never take on a large quilting project after I machine quilted a simple-pieced comforter. It was about the most tedious and awkward machine sewing I had ever done.
So, take my advice and think of machine quilting as trim or embellishment. If you are keen on a quilted coat lining, you can buy such fabrics pre-made.

literally most of the time when i think of solangelo they are just sleeping, curled up comfy in bed maybe watching some tv, probably sleeping- blackout curtains or slightly opened blinds striping light across their bodies, I change it regularly- but they're comfy, nico likes those soft fuzzy faux fur blankets, down comforters, and memory foam pillows in silk(y) cases while will is more of a handmade quilt kind of guy with feather pillows, yet they both agree memory foam mattress is the way to go and will runs hot so of course they get a self cooling one? duh

Completed knitting dpn cosies. They’re all a little bit different because I played around with the pattern.
Snugglepot cosie is the vanilla pattern with 6 dpn slots and 8 large pockets.
One shramp cosie has added medium pockets & retaining elastics for the dpn pockets.
The other shramp I added a single elastic to hold all the pockets shut & enlarged the snap closure to flap.

I started the process of retying this quilt my Grammy made. The yarn ties had deteriorated and the batting came loose.
Tumblr media
I've done my best to follow the holes she left and put the ties in the same places. It feels like time travel. I've also found places where she deviated from the pattern and made adjustments to correct the change. A section where the solid color was in the pattern position and she tied the layers differently to accommodate.
Tumblr media
Being a maker for many years, this resonates with me. Correcting the mistakes that no one will ever see. Turning a misplaced drop of paint into an accent or knitting together a few extra stitches when you accidentally increased a few rows down.
My mom told me that when Grammy wanted to make a quilt, she would go to her closet and start cutting up clothes she no longer wore. This ingenuity was passed from her to my grandmother, to my mom, and to me. It is a family trait I am grateful to have.

Does anyone have some good recommendations for people wanting to learn to sew? Blogs to follow? Online, affordable classes? Any suggestions for finding local sewing groups?
