I trained hard to get better at painting human faces and recently put my new skills to practice with a bunch of hunters (belonging to me and my friends). I'm finally getting satisfied with this stylized style!

{{ Hey how's everyone? I've been busy with a lot of art and non-art stuff but I'm quite happy with how life's going!

I dreamt/thought about Teo and Luna recently, so when I got a bit of time I decided to try and draw them again, also as a way to practice with drawing humans and facial expressions. Trying to figure out a good style between realistic and cartoony to draw humans, and Teo's a very good guinea pig for that ngl!

Anyway I may come and go from this blog from time to time, don't worry if I post a bit and then don't post for a few months, I always end up coming back even if briefly xD

Bit of a technical question but how do you go about drawing Vernon's armor when he's doing more complicated poses like crouching or rolling? The armors in the games tend to clip into itself, which as person who's done modeling I understand, but it makes it a bit difficult tryna translate complicated armor designs to 2D

{{ It's a good question and it's a difficulty that does happen to me when I draw some armors (I recall Seregios armor on Maya for example), but I'm lucky that it's not too much of an issue with Vernon's.

I find (Silverwind) Nargacuga armor to be quite easy to pose most of the time because the design stays pretty close to the human body, it doesn't have any big clunky feature like big flaps around the waist or stuff like that. Silverwind's armor has all the joints on the right places and most of its parts are made of flexible material, so that helps!

The most problematic parts on that armor would be the metal pieces on the waist that can get annoying when the character crouches, and the spikes on the arms that may get in the way when he crosses his arms:

But honestly if I have trouble, I just move the rigid pieces slightly away from their normal placement, or bend them a little. It is fine if the final drawing isn't 100% accurate as most people wouldn't think much of it, or even wouldn't notice it.

Like here (left) I don't know if the arm spikes are correctly placed or not, but I'm sure nobody cares 😂

On the other one (right) the waist metal plates are just tilted up slightly to follow the movement of the thighs but it's probably not entirely how it should work (it would probably clip into the thigh in-game). Again however, I believe it isn't too much of an issue, just making it close to the design can suffice.

I think the difficulty depends a lot on the armor and the poses; I imagine that Narga armors in general have that "ninja" thing going on that makes them rather slim and flexible, which definitely helps a lot, but I don't know how to realistically make Maya crouch in her Seregios armor because of the long semi-rigid flaps around the legs 🤔 }}

"To be honest I've always preferred being clean-shaven, which is why I try to shave every one or two days before going to work. I find it more comfortable that way, and well... I think it adds to the intimidation factor when I need to ask questions to criminals.

However it does sometimes happen that I have very busy weeks – poacher hunting and whatnot – during which I... forget to shave for several days in a row. 

I know some people don’t mind it on me, but... I personally don't like much the feeling of stubble on my face, so it never stays for long.

Though now that I think of it... I remember one expedition I went on with a few of my men, where I neglected to bring my razor since I expected the trip to be short. However, we ended up being out for several weeks, and uh... I clearly wasn't presentable when I came back to Dundorma."

“Oh, I have a story that might sate y'all's curiosity. It includes poacher hunting, Wyvern eggs...

I remember very well the first time we met; I had joined the anti-poaching field barely a few weeks before, and was just assigned to a new mission, far away from usual hunting grounds. While most of our team took care of the poachers, my leader took me alone with him for a special task. I was still wearing my regular Nargacuga armor back then...

We ran to take cover, as we didn't want to harm the beast; but the terrain was irregular and hard to navigate.

Luckily, she didn't want to leave her nest, as my superior suspected; letting us escape with no harm. Who knows how far she would have chased us otherwise... And she could have hurt me quite bad as my armor wasn't nearly strong enough to resist one of her blows.

But it seems the experience thrilled me more than it deterred me. As soon as I received my first Special permits, a few weeks later, I took every opportunity I got to hunt Silverwinds that wandered too close to towns. The beast challenged my skills and determination like very few had before, making me grow into a stronger hunter.

I have also met other types of deviants, some more rare than others, that I may talk about if you wish... But I have never seen that one-eyed female Silverwind again.”

"Before going further though, you may have noticed that there are different types of them. Three types, I would say, but maybe I'm forgetting some.

The first type might sound irrelevant, but there's actually a significant number of arena quests that are accidental. You see, the activities performed in arenas are dangerous -- quite unsurprisingly -- which is why these areas are often built outside of town. But that makes them easier to invade by wild monsters… Which then become the targets of these quests.

The second type is for training and challenging Hunters. I have myself been to the arena many times as a young Hunter when I was learning how to use each weapon, and when I needed to sharpen my skills as I gained experience. After all, nothing makes you practice better than against a real Monster. Furthermore, the environment is safe enough for a newbie, and under enough control to allow comparisons between Hunters' performances.

I will admit I'm not sure how they get their hands on these Monsters however. I believe most of them are from hunter or poacher captures, usually the ones that are considered unable to be reintroduced in the wild (or to be used for research), so the Guild simply finds another use for them. I guess it can be debatable, though.

The last type I can think of is the most controversial of them all: arena quests for show; which aren't totally unlike the challenge quests from earlier. During hunting contests or simply for spectacle, arenas host an audience of people who want to see one or two experienced Hunters at work. The Monsters used for these quests are often more dangerous than average, so there's no way for them to be put back into the wild.

I... happen to know some Hunters who even specialize into such arena shows. One in particular, my cousin Magatsu, performs in Dundorma whenever he gets the opportunity. The few times I've seen him at work, the public seemed to enjoy his flashy moves, so I suppose it can be a popular 'sport'... To be enjoyed in moderation, if you want my opinion."
