concept: beth and borgov go to the same tournaments, so they see each other across halls and across rooms and across boards. few words are exchanged, just pleasantries mostly, but still they find themselves pulled towards one another when they are otherwise alone.
in an otherwise empty elevator, standing too close, not looking at one another but reaching out hands, letting knuckles brush before the elevator slides open, pulling away as quick as then can.
the players’ hotel rooms are all on the same floor, so they see one another often going to and from dinners or parties or walks. usually beth is alone - usually borgov has either his wife or son. but sometimes, there is no one. they drift together and he reaches out for her small, slim hand and she tingles at the feel of his rough palm, rough fingers, but they do not look at one another, only at their hands, and they do not stop moving, and then they pass.
rarer still, their meetings in the hotel bar - late night insomnia, sitting at the counter, him with his vodka or his wine, her with a soda (just a soda, she insists, though the bartender looks at her sideways: then why is she in the bar?). they sit with a single stool between them, staring forward, or down at their drinks. this is the dangerous place, the place where someone who knows them might wander in, even though it’s one or two in the morning. occasionally beth looks over, looking at the fine lines of his face and wishing she could feel them. occasionally borgov looks over and sees the curve of her cheek, her neck, wishes to be buried there. this is the dangerous place, but the place they can sit together the longest.

I watched the absolute banger of a show that is The Queen’s Gambit, and now I’m obsessed. (this was made on millimeter paper, so a type of paper absolutely not made for that kind of thing, but bleh.)

He was  just another man  in a dark suit, another Russian who played chess, she told herself.

Couple of fan arts for The Queen’s Gambit, my interpretation of Beth Harmon and Vasily Borgov.
Borgov is amuskox - it’s something solid, firm and full of dignity. They are strong and often stand on straight legs. I think that personality suits him pretty well.
Beth Harmon is a roe deer. I like their reddish fur colour and also their wide placed eyes. She’s a great contrast to Borgov’s monolithic appearance.

She is an orphan. A survivor. She is like us, losing is not an option for her.

The king.
At first I thought about drawing Elizabeth but Borgov looked as more interesting challenge to me for his face lines and his facial structure.
If this gets enough attention I might draw Elizabeth soon.

the science of parting
Beth Harmon x Vasily Borgov (The Queen's Gambit)
Rated E | Post-Canon
The first thing he’ll do when he returns to Moscow is to toss his clothes into the wash. The second is to kiss his son and ask if he behaved well for his mother. The third—once Fedya joins his friends in the playground—is to make love to his wife. He has tonight and two more days until then. Enough time to blot out traces of red hair and heaving silk and lipstick-bruised cigarettes.

Uhm, this is what happens when a fanfic writer finds a new hyperfixation. That’s my second digital art, and my first digital portrait. Seriously, this fandom holds many firsts for me. I’m not confident with the art, transition from traditional art to digital is challenging and I’m trying to find my style.
Couldn’t decide which one I like better. Have some sulking Soviet Grandmaster to accompany you with your melancholia. Imagine Beth next to him (I’m too lazy to draw her). Look at his tie!
