Please don’t make the same mistake I did. Because now I’m fckin lost. I regret stopping. I regret listening to people who told me I to cease whatever I was doing to make me happy.

I’ve been having a really good couple of weeks and the latest Haikyuu!! chapter left me with tkym feels strong enough to incapacitate me, so I wanted to spread the good vibes!! 🌸

I drew these designs for a different purpose but I wanted to see how it’d look as a button. Since it’s a lot different from my usual button pin style, I only made two sets to test things out — one I will be keeping for myself, and the other pair is what I will be giving away!

Kimi No Na Wa Filipino Dub

Kimi No Na Wa is truly a masterpiece. With its top notch animation, A+ voice acting, great soundtrack and heart-clenching story, it’s definitely an anime film most people have grown to love.

Yesterday, Feb. 18, 2018, a local network decided to show the anime film on television. And like any other foreign films shown on TV in that channel, Kimi No Na Wa was also Tagalized.

Having experienced some poorly dubbed shows in the past (both anime and Hollywood), most fans already reacted negatively when it was announced. Most people said they will not watch it because they know the dubbing will fail, or there will be scenes which will be cut. Some, on the other hand, mentioned they will still watch it to see for themselves. I am one of those who chose the latter.

Being educated and trained what’s behind TV networks and productions, as well as someone who has watched the film in the original dub, here are my sentiments.

First of all, the cut scenes.

Any fan would be upset or get a little disappointed when a scene of their favorite movie would get cut, right? Even I was kinda sad. But I’m sure everyone is familiar with the word “timeslot,” right?

The shows have their schedules. And please be reminded that this TV network have shows other than the film. Each program gets their own timeslot. To meet the timeslot, they must cut the scenes. Because in TV production: Time is everything. Believe me, I’ve been through hell meeting the right time during my TV Production class. A minute after the designated time is already a deduction from our grade because it’s already considered overtime.

I’m sure they carefully chose which ones to cut so that the emotion and the story of the film will remain. So just be glad that the important parts were retained.

Second, the commercial breaks.

Again, it’s shown in a big television network so of course there will be commercial breaks! Let me tell you what I learned in Advertising and TV Production class: Advertising is the blood of the media. Ads and other commercials make everything happen. It’s where they get funds. Funds to get rights of the foreign films so we can watch it locally. If you don’t want commercial breaks, then go stream it online.

And finally, the dubbing.

Sub vs dub, a lot of fans have been debating which one is better. To be honest, either is fine because it’s their own preference. However, there are people who despise the dubbed version, especially in the country. Well, I kinda understand that since I have also seen some anime which are… poorly dubbed. The problem was either the voice, but mostly it’s the translation and delivery. Another point is that dubbing or voice acting is not much supported in the country unlike in Japan or in other countries which even have special training.

But how would the industry get better if the locals themselves are not supporting them?

Going back, the dub for Kimi No Na Wa was actually good. They got the lines right. The translation was also decent because I got the feels. If it didn’t, I would cringe, but I did not. The “crater scene” is the crucial part since it’s the climax and where all the emotions are. The voice actors delivered the lines in such a way that they also tried to feel what the characters are feeling. I remember what I felt when I first watched it (although, I admit the feels from the original one was stronger).

So I would say the voice actors did a pretty great job.

Overall, I’d say the Filipino dubbed Kimi No Na Wa was pretty decent, well done, even.

So as an advice, I’d say don’t judge the show right away just because it’s dubbed. But in the end of the day, we still have our own preferences. Just learn to respect one another.
