I just reblogged a post that was basically about people respecting trans folks even if you don't understand being trans, and I noticed some pushback about how respecting isn't good enough and that they should be trying to understand and I just want to say that... Actually, respecting IS good enough, especially if it is done consistently, and especially if you're in charge of doing so around children (which in the post it was teachers).
Both of my parents have bigotry issues, but I didn't find that out until later in life, because when they interacted with me as a kid, they respected the people around them that were different. I distinctly remember being very, very young and my mom explaining to me that one of the men at her work loved a man instead of a woman, and I remember being given the express impression that this was something my mother expected me to respect and treat normally. If she felt any other way about it, I never would have guessed because she respected him in practice, consistently enough that I can truthfully say that as a young child, I was raised by my very Catholic, highly conservative, vehemently Republican parents to respect non-straight individuals. Regardless of my own sexuality (which ended up being non-straight) or their own beliefs or understanding.
I know my mom doesn't really get or condone it, because we've talked about it since, but that's kind of my point. I grew up with that respect as an expectation, that was the example they set regardless of whether they understood it, which allowed me to interact and learn more easily with this group/community, and were I to have children of my own (which I won't), they would be able to start from a point of having me both respect AND understand. And hopefully that would mean that they would have an even greater capacity for acceptance and love of folks different to themselves (or the same, if it turned out that way).
That's how societal change works, that's how large scale change works. It's generational. I don't need people to understand, I need them to respect me. The generation that learns respect up front will be ready to learn to understand, but right now trans people are getting harassed and murdered and shit. I don't care if someone understands why they shouldn't harass someone, as long as they have the basic civility to not fucking do it. Respect is even a step above basic civility that I will happily take.
Understanding can come after everyone is safe.

Again, I have complete faith in Jeffries and Simhadri. I'll be honest, I'm not as familiar with their work as I am with Walker's, but I'm sure they're very talented and I wish them all the best.
But yes, as I said, I just can't quite believe that they haven't been cast more in the name of diversity than in the name of talent.
Further disclaimer; last thing I would do is harbour any grudge or dislike towards these actors who are, of course, children. They will have my full support, I would just ask questions of the casting directors.

They don't need to "rewrite" Annabeth's character just because she's being played by a black actress. And he treated Hazel fine. Just admit you only care about these characters in a shallow manner and go away.
race is an integral part of someone’s identity. im not saying i want him to make a completely new character to take her place and change her personality, i just wanted to state that with this race change, issues in her life would be different than if she were white
book annabeth’s thing was Blondes Aren’t Dumb. tv series annabeth thing probably wont be that, so instead possibly could be something along the lines about how poc, specifically black girls, are undermined in a lot of spaces just because of their appearance, and how she wants to prove that that stereotype is wrong
and for the hazel thing, not really. when you see representation, you don’t really consume it critically because any representation is good, right?
in actuality, riordan did play into some stereotypes and did write her poorly. you can read more about it here where other readers expand on why she’s not the best character better than i can. she is admittedly more fleshed out than a lot of other books make their poc characters, but that doesn’t mean her character can’t be criticized

& NICO MANNING THE LINE TO HIT HIM 😭 !!!??!?!!? made me sick when i read it like wtf
i know i and some other people have talked about this countless times before but i still cannot fully understand why rick riordan made an abuse victim character be hit over and over again by people who didn’t even KNOW him and turned it into a joke

with annabeth’s casting, i really really hope that rick has some poc on their team to help rewrite parts of her character
we already saw how he treated hazel in hoo :( hoping he doesnt butcher up this opportunity and can learn from past mistakes to improve the series

Like do people realize how much this casting enriched Annabeth’s character? I never bought that “people don’t respect me because I’m blonde” schtick. But girls of color, and specifically black girls being underestimated? That’s real life.
Also, and equally important, black girls are going to get to see themselves as the smartest and most capable person in the room AND also the most beautiful girl in the world to the main character.

You want little black girls to feel inspired? Hazel. You want little Asian boys to feel empowered? Frank. You want little Spanish boys to feel represented? Leo. You want LGBTQ to feel heard? Nico and Will. You want Native American girls to feel inspired? Piper. There is so much representation in the books already, you don't need to take away the only fictional character that made me feel seen in my childhood. But disney did, blondes are always depicted as dumb, black girls are depicted as strong nowadays. It's the truth. Hard truth, you can come for me but I don't care.

i just think we should never forget that 13 year old percy jackson carried a picture of annabeth chase around in his notebook just so he could look at it and remind himself that she was real

One further thing: I am completely okay with having black characters in the show, even if they were not black in the book.
however, if they give us some random abusive backstory because of their race, or any racist implications anywhere, or try to make these characters into race warriors of some sort, and try to put some kind of progressive, racially aware spin on these children's stories. i am going to be absolutely furious.
again, not with the actors. with the scriptwriters. who I reckon wouldn't do that but honestly you never know.
allow anyone to play anyone. but don't you dare make it part of the actual plot

oh my god this is such a random thought but when pjotv releases there’s going to have to be a new pjo fandom tag added on ao3 and then all the works under the “riordan all media types” tag will be a bit outdated because pjotv won’t be compliant with the book descriptions, you know, so like, the term All Media Types is incorrect and. Woah new era so weird to think about
