I’ve been listening to Conan Gray’s new song “Bourgeoisieses” and I can’t help relating it back to Snape.

I feel as though he would relate so heavily to the feeling of wanting, even NEEDING to be apart of the “bourgeoises”, the high class pure blood death eaters.

Severus comes from a poor house with a drunk abusive muggle father and expects Hogwarts to be his big break.

But when he finally arrives he’s chosen to be the marauders victims and is immediately placed in a house (different than his only friend!!!) with a large amount of blood supremacists.

He gets a front row seat viewing of what the pure blood life is like. (Such as with Bruce, Lucius, Narcissa, maybe even regulus?) He gets to see the expensive outfits, the absurd purchases, the extravagant parties and money being thrown like candy, without seeing what happens behind closed doors.

This first class viewing makes him absolutely crave that sort of life, so he starts involving himself into those circles, abandoning his own morals and contradicting his previous actions to get a taste of the life of the “bourgeoisie”.

I like to imagine that the “blonde woman” mentioned in the song is Lily, telling Severus about how the pure bloods are “wrong, cheat on wives and never pay the price.” Despite all of these warnings, Severus still believes the glamor of the pure blood life, using the incorrect multiple of the word “bourgeois” to show his naïveté.

Every year he gets closer and closer to achieving that life as a “bourgeois” until eventually, he’s in so far he loses his friendship with Lily. Trading a true relationship for multiple false ones attempting to use him for their own goals. Who never forgot the poor half blood.

I find the line “The men at war, they draft the poor, no time to mourn im on the dance floor.” So fitting for him as well. I imagine this line taking place when he’s a young adult in the middle of the Wizarding war, before fucking up and sharing the prophecy.

He views himself as apart of this inner circle, at an equal level to the rest of the pure bloods. Therefore he gets to celebrate with them in these extravagant parties whenever Voldemort succeeds in a mission, ignoring the horrifying actions of the people he is with and how they are directly targeting minorities he is apart of.

I don’t know, I just love characters being absolutely consumed by their envy. They look around them and at first they’re disappointed, saddened, even a little confused as to why everyone has something they don’t. Then as the years go by, they realize the unfairness of it all. It just festers and festers and festers until suddenly…all they can think about is the pure rage. Why do they get to have that? Why can’t I have that? Turns into, I will have that.

Fun idea I’ve had bouncing around about Remus:

You know how queer/neurodivergent kids have that one teacher that they bond to? You know what I’m talking about- you’ve seen the memes about the gay kid and the English/art teacher bond.

I like to imagine that Remus just has a tiny group of kids who hung out in his classroom to feel safe.

He would leave his door open constantly and during lunch, he would offer to call a house elf for hot chocolate, tea, biscuits or other sweets for the kids. If he noticed one of his kids doesn’t eat lunch, he would quietly pull them to the side and ask what was up.

The kids would talk to him abt literally anything under the sun. Some would even go and ask for help for other classes (quite a few for potions, none of which were slytherins)

He’d have a small bowl of pride pins and flags up for grabs on his desk which his kids occasionally take, always causing him to give a little smile to the kid.

I don’t know. I just image Remus as the designated safe teacher. He’d be the one to notice a kid struggling and offer help or ask what’s wrong. He’d be the one that students go to when they have problems at home, were being bullied or just needed someone to talk to.
