Students at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia are facing uncertainty this week, with teaching support staff threatening to walk off the job as early as Thursday.

In a Tuesday media release, the SFU Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU) said some 1,600 teaching staff were set to begin an “indefinite work stoppage” on Sept. 28, when members would being rolling and escalating pickets at the school’s three campuses.

“SFU’s administration is eroding the foundation of the university from underneath their own feet,” teaching assistant and communications PhD candidate Dalton Kamish said in a statement.

“The majority of our members are graduate students struggling to afford rent, groceries or medications. Without us there is no SFU.” [...]

guess who's back in the clutches of academia!? this gremlin.

yep, i'm actually doing the phd. and not going to lie--i'm stressed. but also excited? i've vowed to myself that i'm going to take what i learned the past two years working in the non-profit/cultural sector and apply it here. so no late night writing sessions (well.. i'll try), no answering emails after 5 pm. i'm going to treat this like a 9–5 for the sake of my mental health and well-being.

i'm also not going to put pressure on myself to publish or be articulate. i'm in my first semester of my first year, and i'm here to learn! in my MA, i thought i had to know everything because my school was so competitive and held tightly to the publish or perish mindset, but i refuse to do that this time around. i don't want to lose the passion i have for my research area. i don't to lose myself, honestly.

so i will be using this blog as a way to keep myself accountable. namely, i'll be using it to keep track of my to-dos, and to hopefully connect with others doing the same. so if you're also in grad school feel free to reach out!

this week i'm going to:

finish the readings for the class i'm TAing

finish my keyword assignment for my creative work course

complete the Indigenous learning module and readings

do my methods course readings

come up with a case study for my methods exercise assignment (thinking something around k-pop and gatekeeping--need to find a recent example for a dataset)

submit my external course form for winter semester

Reviving this account again as I go into PhD application mode! I’m applying to 4 different programs, and I really need to get going on finalizing my documents. Working full-time (plus a side tutoring gig & running a BTS GO) really leaves me drained/unmotivated in the evenings, but my goal is to get everything done before the holidays so... wish me luck!
